† PRAYER OF CONFESSION

The Rev. Dr. Russell Sullivan, Jr. Holy God, the parable of the mustard seed teaches us that a little faith can produce great work in your kingdom. Yet we are too timid to bear the fruit of your righteousness, for we walk by sight and not by faith. Forgive us, Lord; we do not uphold the poor or the oppressed. We do not advocate for the powerless or the voiceless. We do not sacrifice ourselves for the needs of our neighbors. Renew us with the love of Christ so that we live no longer for ourselves, but for Christ who became the seed of your righteousness in us. Amen.

June 16: The Art of the Memoir (or Why You Shouldn’t Write a Memoir)

One of the most popular literary forms today has its roots in Christian faith. St. Augustine wrote a memoir The Confessions which continues to be the model on which memoirs are written. Doug will explore the history of the memoir, sample a few of the best, and offer encouragement to anyone who wants to write a personal story.

Rev. Douglas J. Brouwer was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament at Pine Street in September 1980 and was an associate pastor for five years. He then served churches in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida, and retired in 2018 from the International Protestant Church in Zürich, Switzerland. A memoir about his 40 years of

ministry, Chasing After Wind: A Pastor’s Life, will be published later this year.
