God of compassion, we are sick. We have wrestled all night with worry instead of resting in you. We have asserted our own goodness instead of awakening to yours. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. Who at my door is standing, there patiently drawing near, who entrance is demanding? Whose is the voice I hear? Sweetly the tones are falling: “Now open the door for me! If thou wilt heed my calling, I will abide with thee.” Within, the rooms are darken’d, all filled with dust and sin; how shameful, how unworthy for Christ to enter in. Yet, the tones are falling: “Now open the door for me! If thou wilt heed my calling, I will abide with thee.” Door of my heart, I hasten! Thee will I open wide. Though he rebuke and chasten, he shall with me abide. Sweetly the tones are falling: “Now open the door for me!” Lord God, I hear thee calling, come now, abide with me. Dear Lord, abide with me!

We conclude this Wednesday a series of classes specifically focusing on prayer, the Celtic tradition, and the labyrinth as a tool for prayer and meditation. Our teacher is the Rev. Dr. Kay Mutert, a United Methodist minister and a master teacher with Veriditas (www.veriditas.org), a ministry “dedicated to inspiring personal and planetary change and renewal through the labyrinth experience.” The link to connect you to the class is in the all-church email sent this week.

April 11, 18 – Partisan Faith: The Church in an Age of Polarization

There has been a good bit written about how divided our country is and how this threatens our democracy. These two sessions will explore how polarization threatens the church (and faith) and explore ways the church can productively respond so that faith informs faith participation in civic life. This forum will be led by Dr. David True, Associate Professor of Religion at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His research interests grow out of his interest in Reformed faith and culture. He coedited the book Paradoxical Virtue: Reinhold Niebuhr and the Virtue Tradition (Routledge 2020). He has written on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, political fundamentalism, just war theory, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. True is a member minister of the Presbytery of Carlisle and has served congregations in McLean and Richmond, Virginia.
