PRAYER OF PREPARATION
Transfiguration of the Lord
God, our light and our rescue, our fortress in times of trouble, when human powers seek to crush us, protect us in the hidden places of your heart. Ease our fears and let us rest in you. When other lives are threatened, fortify our resolve to be your protection for all our kin and all your good creation. When the work is done, we ask only to live in your house and enjoy your beauty forever. Amen.

We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain.

One: Finite human minds cannot fathom God’s fullness,
Many: but every day we receive glimpses of God’s glory:
One: in the night sky’s depth and the simplest flower; in shared meals, shared stories, and shared struggles.
Many: In the face of every person made in God’s image, God’s beauty glows like sunlight behind clouds.
One: We share God’s longing to be known, to be truly seen and loved for all we are.
Many: And so we dare to share ourselves with God and one another. We dare to come closer, glimpsing God’s presence with stranger and friend.
One: Let us together worship God.

God of compassion, in Jesus Christ, you reveal the light of your glory, but we turn away, distracted by our own plans. We confess that we speak when we should listen, and act when we should wait. Forgive our aimless enthusiasms. Grant us wisdom to live in your light and to follow in the way of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Confession of 1967
In Jesus of Nazareth, true humanity was realized once for all. Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, lived among his own people and shared their needs, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He expressed the love of God in word and deed and became a brother to all kinds of sinful men and women. But his complete obedience led him into conflict with his people. His life and teaching judged their goodness, religious aspirations, and national hopes. Many rejected him and demanded his death. In
giving himself freely for them, he took upon himself the judgment under which everyone stands convicted. God raised him from the dead, vindicating him as Messiah and Lord. The victim of sin became victor, and won the victory over sin and death for all.
