By: Crystal Solosky Should you ever find yourself wandering down Collingwood, feel free to stop in at friendly Ferency House. We reside at 146, nestled between Miles and Hedrick. Our home is white with blue trim, has a shed, a back deck on the second floor and nine of the nicest co-oper’s anyone could ever hope to live with. We have seven rooms, three doubles and four singles. Each one is painted and decorated in the occupants’ own unique way. We have two ferrets, a bird and everyone’s favorite kitty cat, Liam. We have one common room with a TV and a bunch of nonmatching couches, which connects to the dinning room and the kitchen. The deck I mentioned before is the site of many a fine b-b-qs. In fact, most Friday and Saturday nights you can find a good crowd braving the weather in the back as we grill up a feast friends and housemates. We have a shed that needs some love and attention, but as of right now we are making plans to renovate it for future use. We have a lot of very nice woodwork in our home and one very badly overgrown front yard. Good thing that work weekend is coming up soon.

We have one common room with a TV and a bunch of non-matching couches, which connects to the dinning room and the kitchen. The deck I mentioned before is the site of many a fine b-b-qs. In fact, most Friday and Saturday nights you can find a good crowd braving the weather in the back as we grill up a feast friends and housemates. We have a shed that needs some love and attention, but as of right now we are making plans to renovate it for future use. We have a lot of very nice woodwork in our home and one very badly overgrown front yard. Good thing that work weekend is coming up soon. On the bottom floor are two very fine, upstanding young men. First we have Steve Thelander, a.k.a. Debo. He is an Aries, a grad student who does a lot of work with Habitat for Humanity and participates in the MSU Outing Club. The door of his front room is often open and you can walk in and have a good long chat about the Lions any time.

Summer canoeing with Shadowood By: Cory Vowell Each year, the Shadowood Co-op, a.k.a. Sigma Pi, sets off to the Appalachian Mountains for our annual canoe trip. This year was a bit interesting, and fun for some. We arrived in a small, pre-industrial town, where we had some of the locals gas up our cars, and drive us to the docking point in the Cahulawassi River. One of the funnier moments of the trip happened in that small town. One of our brothers, Abe, pulled out his guitar, and started jamming on it. We all were singing and having a good time, when we found out one of the town boys could play too, except he had a banjo. There’s no jamming until you’ve jammed with a banjo, played by someone whose father probably was the inventor. Further into the trip, after we got dropped off down river, the group about a half mile ahead of us pulled over to the shore to take a lunch break. Apparently they ran into a little bit of a situation there from some strange mountain men. Maybe he had a banjo. Brad, a really funny big guy in our house, was really drunk, because when we got there he was running around hollering in just his whitey tighties. Some people it is simply hard to take out into public places, even in the wilderness. They wouldn’t really tell us the whole story, but boy we sure heard someone squealing with laughter all the way down the river. They must have really been some funny hillbillies! Later, we ran into some heavy rapids down river, and one of the brothers, Bert, fell out of his canoe and hurt both of his legs. Thank goodness we weren’t hiking. So, by the end of our trip, two of us were walking kind of funny and the rest were just hungover. Hopefully next year will prove to be a little more fun. I can only imagine what could happen with the next crew! Until then, our house will have to fill the winter blahs with some more creative and exciting stories. Only time will tell what will go on. As a close on canoeing, Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!

With Halloween coming up, those of us at the Pine Press know that everyone in the co-op is looking for good and inexpensive costume ideas. Well, we aim to please. Lansing Civic Players, at 2300 East Michigan Avenue, rents out their theatrical costumes to help cover the costs of putting on plays. In their inventory, they have over 10,000 costumes available for rent. Their selection ranges from Renaissance, cleric, suits and dresses from the 1800’s through today, and many animal costumes. Rentals are based on how complex the costumes are, usually ranging from $35$55. For more information, you can call them at 4849199. The Salvation Army, at 2019 East Michigan Avenue, is another good place to look for costume ideas. If you want to go as a character from the 70’s or 80’s, much of the clothing donated to them fits in that era. Also, there are two vintage clothing stores along Grand River; Chicken Heads, at 543 East Grand River, and Scavenger Hunt, at 321 East Grand River. Of course, if these options are too expensive for you, we at the Pine Press have some ideas for cheap, and hopefully good, costume ideas. One costume idea consists of a pack of balloons and a clear plastic bag. Blow the balloons up, and rip arm and leg holes in the plastic bag. Put the balloons inside the bag, and tie the bag up around your head. Ta-da! You are now dressed as a bag of jelly
