Executive Committee Elections are coming! Instead of mating in the Spring, us co-opers elect each other to fulfill important roles. Thus the election for our next Executive Committee is coming. The positions on the E.C. are President, Executive Vice-President, VicePresident of Membership, Vice-President of Education, and Corporate Treasurer. These positions begin in May 2002 and last until May 2003. This year the election will be held at the end of March. All interested candidates must submit a letter of candidacy by February 27, 2002. This letter will be printed in the Pine Press for all to see. Then, an election dinner will be held for all candidates to show off. Ballots will be distributed to the Education Officer of each house and popular vote will be taken. The winners will be announced March 31, 2002. So come on!! If you love the cooperative movement, get active! If you are planning to live in the co-ops next year and think you might be interested, contact Erin Wright, the current V.P.E. at Bower with any questions. You can also contact our current E.C. members to ask them about their jobs. See page 6 for contact info. If you or someone you love is interested submit your letter by FEBRUARY 27, 2002! You’d better run! Their coming! Oh yeah, all Executive Committee members receive an assessment break each month.

Co-op Volleyball is Back! By: Henrique Bertulani Due to the good turn out of the games last season, perhaps not in victories, but certainly in game play, there will be another effort to bring co-opers together on a court this Spring. IM West offers permanent practice nets, and their hours are: Mon-Wed 8am—11 pm and Thu, Fri 8am –1am . Please write down a time you could play and submit it to Henrique at Bower. The main goal is to get people together so that both sides are teams formed by co-opers and friends. Eventually we see that the only team that can beat us is the varsity women’s team themselves. There will be 12 openings for a co-op team, so with enough people we could have representation on the court every Spring 2002 day. Jerseys will be supplied by SHC. One could claim actually that one of the first co-ed sports that had both sexes represented in the Olympic games was volleyball. One would have to research, but it is certainly played co-ed wise throughout the Americas. The way strength is demonstrated in volleyball doesn’t convey subduing the opponent, it separates brute strength allows other factors that are analogous for society; such as timing the periodic switching of positions and cooperative attempts of preventing harm to the group. Fred’s Story

As many of the readers of the Pine Press know, my mom was in a rehabilitation clinic to try to regain strength after a month and a half hospital stay. All of us thought she was getting better-the clinic was even going to let her out for a few hours on Christmas Day to enjoy herself with the family. My dad and sister drove to East Lansing to give me a ride back home to Union Lake on December 23 rd, at 7 PM. I hadn’t came home since December 4th, because I thought everything was going to be all right. After all, your parents will last forever, right? My dad had had two heart attacks and stomach cancer, and he was still around. When we got to my sister’s house, there was a call from the clinic, asking us to go there as soon as possible. We called my brother, and we drove out to Southfield, where the clinic was located. The entire ride there, we were joking around about her having another episode, and timing it for the first bad driving weather of the winter. When we pulled into the clinic, there was a police car in the front of the building. We went to the nurse’s station, and the policeman was standing there. The nurse took us into a small room with the policeman, and I looked over his shoulder to see what was written on his clipboardCause of Death: Heart Attack Victim: Shirley Longacre I just started yelling “No! Oh my God! No!” The nurse then tried to explain that she had had a massive heart attack at about 8:15 PM, and they hadn’t been able to save her. I felt like scum, because if they hadn’t come to East Lansing to pick me up, my Dad and sister could have been there with her. My sister was crying, and apologizing to me for not getting me back faster so I could say goodbye to her-at the same time I was trying to apologize to her. My little brother was just collapsed in his wife’s arms, crying his eyes out, and my dad for the first time actually looked like he was sixty years old. The next two days were among the worst I’ve ever had to face. Christmas Eve we met with the funeral director, and picked out the coffin and the announcements for the funeral. We planned the funeral for Saturday, December 29 th. My sister-in-law and sister took care of almost all of the arrangements-calling to set up appointments, letting her friends know what happened, etc. We tried to get through Christmas without tears, for my nephews, and because we knew she would have wanted it that way, but it was hard. My sister-in-law finally “kidnapped” myself and my dad, and took us to the Greektown Casino (my mom and dad used to go to Las Vegas once a year for gambling) at 9 PM at night Christmas Day. It’s been a little over a month now, and I still find myself getting emotional over some things. On December 26 th, we were going through some pictures for the memory board, and we spent most of the night just grabbing the pictures and remembering the good times that came with them. I still find myself looking at them at times, and remembering. When people I haven’t seen in a while ask how my mom is doing, it’s a reminder that I will never see her again, and no matter what I do with the rest of my life, she’s not going to be there to see it. There are many people who I owe thanks for helping me out. I called my housemate Kara the night of the 23 rd, and asked if, on Christmas Eve, she could go to the dry-cleaners, pick up my suit, and Fed-Ex it to me for the funeral. Jeremy, Maxim, Kyle, Nicole and Joe, all of whom went out of their way to make sure I was all right when I came back. The people at Caesarland, where I work, for covering for me and sending flowers to the service. My friends Jeff and Laura, who kidnapped me on New Year’s Eve, and refused to let me stay home and mope. I would like to close this article with the poem my sister and sister-in-law chose for the funeral announcements: God looked around his garden,
He put his arms around you,
It broke our hearts to lose you
And he found an empty place.
And lifted you to rest.
But you didn’t go alone,
He then looked down upon
God’s Garden must be
for part of us went with you,
this earth,
beautiful,
the day God called you home.

The political aspect of the game is still to wing, yet the feeling of integration among the players is great even in defeat, for this game is 50% technique and 50% enthusiasm. I say that in retrospect to countless times of watching the national teams lose after thinking that their superior technique was enough to defeat the other team. However, they were beat by the cheering public and motivated players. In South America, Volleyball is a national sport in virtually every country, and the media televises the games on network television. Such as when the first women Olympic gold medal was acquired in 1996. Examples such as the Cuban women’s and men’s teams practicing together, and having the nets lifted another 7 inches. In short, more cooperative games will give us an awareness of equality outside and inside the courts of the world. All inspired volleyball-ites, please contact Henrique at Bower!
