PINAL COUNTY STATISTICS County Seat: Florence (established 1866) Founded: Feb. 1, 1875 Population estimate: 453,924 Area: 5,374 square miles, 4.5 of which are water. The County is comprised of five cities, seven towns, four Indian communities and 16 unincorporated areas. The state of Arizona is the county’s largest landholder with 35%, followed by individuals and corporations at 22%, Indian communities with 23% and the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management with 14%. The remaining 6% constitutes other public land. This provides visitors with unspoiled views and recreational opportunities.

PINAL COUNTY BIRDING TRAIL With sightings of western bluebirds, black-throated sparrows, finches, owls and other winged species, Pinal County is a bird-watching hot spot and the Pinal County Birding Trail makes it easy to know where to go for the best bird viewing throughout the year. The Pinal County Birding Trail was designed with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and its interactive map aims to be the perfect tool to explore the region and showcase area wildlife. Visitors can use the map to set their own itinerary, whether they’re new to bird watching or experienced ornithologists. All sites listed on the Pinal County Birding Trail are public and include easy access to parking. They are suitable for walkers and hikers, and some have restrooms and picnic areas. Two areas on the trail, the lower San Pedro River and the Gila River, have surrounding riparian habitats considered among the most biodiverse areas in the Southwest, giving visitors a chance to see yearround habitats, bird breeding sites, migration corridors and winter habitats. The map is easy to use and takes the guess work out of planning a birdwatching hike. Bird watchers simply click on the bird icon on any part of the map for a pop-up window that includes the site name and location, elevation, type of habitat and information about who manages the property. With all the information about the best bird-watching sites simply a click away, bird watchers need only put on a pair of hiking shoes, grab some binoculars and water, and hit the trails. PINAL COUNTY PARKS & TRAILS Hiking, biking and enjoying the outdoors are among the best ways to relax and commune with nature, and Pinal County offers outstanding parks, trails and other recreation opportunities. Included in Pinal County boundaries are five state parks, four wilderness areas, three national monuments, two national forests and a national scenic trail, which are all open to those hoping for a little more outdoor recreation. With several community and neighborhood parks and other outdoor spaces, Pinal County offers about 60 miles of regional non-motorized, multi-use trails. An interactive map on the Pinal County Parks & Trails website allows visitors to find trails, parks and outdoor spaces to aid in planning outdoor recreation. To use the map, outdoor enthusiasts need only click on the icons to find trailheads, neighborhood parks and regional parks. On the County Parks & Trails website, visitors will also find other information needed for visiting recreation sites, including rules, volunteering opportunities, how to report a concern and other topics. POPULAR OUTDOOR SITES IN PINAL COUNTY ARE: Arizona National Scenic Trail Designated a National Scenic Trail in 2009, the Arizona National Scenic Trail is more than 800 miles and traverses across the state, from Mexico to Utah. Pinal County manages about 50 miles of the trail, from Oracle to FlorenceKelvin Highway. Other parts of the trail in Pinal County are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. CAP National Recreation Trail The Central Arizona Project supplies Colorado River water to the region through a canal system. A long-distance, non-motorized trail runs alongside the canal. One segment of the trail runs through Pinal County from the Pima County border to Park Link Drive, offering 10.5 miles of trail that includes views of the Picacho and Tortolita mountains. Lost Goldmine Trail Running along the base of the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, this trail consists of about 9 desert miles and often features sightings of bighorn sheep and other wildlife.

Home to Lost Dutchman State Park — named after the legendary mine — Apache Junction is known for the easy access it provides to see the Superstitions and the surrounding wilderness up close. While there’s hiking trails, camping and wildlife viewing opportunities at the state park, the majestic views of the mountains can also be easily

enjoyed from Prospector Park for those who want to take in the sights at a more leisurely pace. In addition to beautiful views, Apache Junction is known for its rich history. The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum is dedicated to preserving Apache Junction’s Native American, railroad and mining history. The museum also features exhibits on the area’s legacy in film as what remains of the Apacheland Movie Ranch, the iconic Elvis Chapel and the Apacheland Barn are all on display.

Goldfield Ghost Town also offers some insight into what it was like to live in an old Western town. Founded in the 1890s, Goldfield was a vibrant town that thrived during the height of the mining in the area. However, when miners could no longer find gold, the town eventually shuttered. Despite attempts to revive the town between 1910 and 1926, Goldfield never made a comeback until it was eventually reopened as a tourist attraction. Today, the reconstructed Goldfield Ghost Town serves as an attraction for locals and vacationers alike, giving visitors an opportunity to explore the town, tour the mine and participate in a number of other fun activities.

APACHE JUNCTION BUCKET LIST UPERSTITION MOUNTAIN MUSEUM S Explore the Superstition Mountain Museum’s garden-scale railroad (operational between November and May). This impressive 2,300-square-foot layout takes visitors on a tour of Arizona’s early days, and its railroad history, starting in the late 1800s through the 1930s. BARLEENS DINNER SHOW

Grab a plate and catch a show at Barleens Dinner Show, a live music venue that serves up food and provides plenty of entertainment with a variety of musical acts scheduled throughout the season. SUPERSTITION ZIPLINE

Feeling adventurous? Consider giving the Superstition Zipline, located at Goldfield Ghost Town, a try. The zipline offers incredible views of the central Arizona desert, the ghost town and the Superstitions. ARIZONA CITY With its quiet country roads, rolling acres of farmland and endless desert vistas, the unincorporated community of Arizona City is home to about 11,000 residents, a beautiful, scenic golf course and a manmade lake. And the community has rich history. In 1775, the area that now includes Arizona City was a resting spot for the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition party as it mapped a route from Sonora, Mexico, to what is now San Francisco, California. The route the early explorers took is now part of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, which crosses the region in the footsteps of the expedition party. The community began to take shape in 1959 when Jack McRae created Arizona City Development Corporation and developed several acres of desert land, which later became Arizona City. 16

Take advantage of sunny days and warm weather with a stop at the Arizona City park and playground on Sunland Gin Road or explore several hiking trails in the region. Pop into Tumblebeans on Sunland Gin Road for coffee, tea, an TumbleBeans Cafe energy drink or a bite to eat. Sometimes in the evenings, Tumblebeans offers game nights, inviting families to gather around a game of chess, checkers or other fun. Among the culinary choices are various styles of food, including pizza and tacos. Nico’s Mexican Food is a popular stop for a meal while TumbleBeans Coffee is a great place to pick up a pumpkin or butterscotch latte along with a bagel. Both are on Sunland Gin Road.

Casa Grande Street Fair

CASA GRANDE With a rich history, a bustling art scene and an array of recreation and entertainment opportunities, Casa Grande is a fast-growing city that offers plenty to see and do. An estimated 57,000 people call Casa Grande home, making it one of the largest communities in Pinal County and an important economic center for the region. Founded in 1879, the community started as an end-of-the-line location for the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was officially named Casa Grande in 1880. Several organizations work to highlight the area’s history, including The Museum of Casa Grande, which has various exhibits and displays illustrating life in the community over the decades. Several murals, art projects and even a Neon Sign Park in the city’s historic downtown also pay tribute to the city’s rich history.

For a weekend every January, the streets in historic downtown Casa Grande are blocked off for an annual street fair and car and bicycle show. Hosted by Casa Grande Main Street, the annual Casa Grande Street Fair attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the community for live entertainment, art, culinary delights and shopping among the event’s various vendors. Other events such as rodeo, art festivals and an annual plein air painting competition are also held every year.

Various hobbies flourish in Casa Grande. The city is home to the award-winning Casa Grande RC Flyers, a model aeronautics club that maintains a flying field and landing strip for model aviation and drones on a city-owned plot of land on Isom Road. 18

Golf is a popular hobby and there are several places to tee off, including the Dave White Municipal Golf Course as well as a resident-owned golf course in the Mission Royale subdivision (non-residents can reserve a tee-time online at www.missionroyalegolfclub. com) and a popular course at Francisco Grande Hotel & Golf Resort, which was once the spring training facility for the San Francisco Giants now a soccer training facility.

The Casa Grande Community Recreation Center on Peart Road offers 55,000 square feet of space with basketball courts, meeting spaces, a dance studio, fitness center and an indoor walking and jogging track as well as various group fitness, art classes and other activities. And art can be found throughout the community including murals, public art pieces and the rotating exhibits at the Casa Grande Art Museum on Third Street. The Casa Grande Art Association, in partnership with the Casa Grande Arts and Humanities Commission, regularly rotates exhibits at the municipal airport to display the works of local artists. People can stop in and see the exhibits anytime the terminal is open at 3225 N. Lear Ave. ADDITIONAL THINGS TO SEE AND DO Pop into BeDillon’s Restaurant & Cactus Garden for a bite to eat while seeing an impressive collection of cactus and succulents — some older than the town itself. Learn about cotton and farming during an agricultural tour at Caywood Farms. Take aim and practice shooting at The City of Casa Grande’s Elzy Pearson Shooting Range.

Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

COOLIDGE Steeped in centuries of history while making a leap into the future, Coolidge represents a crossroads of many different eras of life in this area. The land that would become Coolidge was first settled by ancient Sonoran Desert people who developed farming and irrigation systems to provide for themselves. These peoples are believed to be the ancestors of tribes that still exist in Arizona today. For reasons that remain unknown, the people abandoned their communities, likely in the 15th century, but left behind plenty of artifacts that have been discovered ever since. These include structures that still remain at least partially intact today, the most notable of which is the “Big House,” a four-story caliche building believed to have been built by the Sonoran Desert people nearly a millennium ago. The site is now one of several that make up Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, which sits not far from the northern entrance to Coolidge. The park attracts thousands of people from around the globe every year to visit the site and learn about the culture and legacy left behind by these Native Americans. And while the national park offers glimpses into the innovativeness of, and the incredible creations developed by, the peoples who once called the area home, the Pinal Gem and Mineral Museum offers peeks into the beauty and wonder created by the natural world. Located on Arizona Boulevard in the same complex as the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce, the museum houses exhibits that include fossils, fluorescent minerals, meteorites, and other minerals from around Arizona and even a geological history of Pinal County. The museum is highly educational and kid friendly, offering both a mineral and fossil dig. Kids even get to take home some of the items they dig up. 20

Of course, Coolidge is also a community with strong ties in agriculture and, particularly, cotton growing. The community has been home to generations of farming families and some individuals who have had wide-reaching impact across the state of Arizona. One of the best places to learn about Coolidge and the most notable figures that m u e s u ciet y M have called it home over the o S l a ic e Histor decades is the Coolidge Historical Coolidg Society Museum, which can be found at what served at the city’s first courthouse on Harding Avenue. The museum houses the city’s first jail and features exhibits on everything from Coolidge’s early schools to a wooden home built in the 1920s, giving visitors a sense of what it was like to live in the community during the era as families moved there to grow cotton and other crops. COOLIDGE BUCKET LIST ASA GRANDE RUINS C Of course, you can’t miss a visit to Casa Grande Ruins, with the four-story “Big House” being one of the largest standing structures from its era that can still be visited today. Be sure to also check out the ball court that sits on the site, which is believed to have served as a gathering place for the community that once lived there. LD SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL O Watch a basketball game, preferably against rival Florence, at the historic Coolidge High School Roundhouse. The round, wooden structure is one of the last of its kind, taking basketball fans back to a different time in the sport’s history. The atmosphere during a tense game is something that needs to be experienced. HE GALLOPIN’ GOOSE T Grab a drink where the legends used to sing at the Gallopin’ Goose. Coolidge has a little-known history in the early days of country music. It is the birthplace of Duane Eddy, and Waylon Jennings used to host a radio program from a Coolidge studio. Both performed at the Goose, which has become a historic landmark in its own right, with its famous neon sign still running up front. 2024 – 2025 Explore Pinal County Visitors Guide

Robson Ranch

ELOY The City of Eloy is a lot more than first meets the eye. Those who drive through along Interstate 10 might think it’s a series of truck stops. But drive a couple miles off the freeway and you’ll find a vibrant community full of pride and heritage. Eloy has its roots in the railroad industry, as the Union Pacific (then Southern Pacific) Railroad runs through town and created a stop with that name in 1902. Eloy is actually an acronym, which stands for End of Line Yuma. The origin of the name has either a practical or humorous origin, depending on who you talk to. Like other settlers around Pinal County, the first Eloy residents quickly discovered the land was ripe for cotton growing, so a diverse set of jobs started popping up. The city was incorporated in 1949. While the main part of the city might seem quaint, Eloy’s city limits are actually quite large at 113.7 square miles, which is nearly two miles bigger than its neighbor Casa Grande. Like so many other communities in Pinal, Eloy is steeped with history and culture. Throughout the year you can find some of that culture on display thanks to festivals like the Fiestas Patrias in September and the Eloy Glow Balloon Festival in November. Visitors can also discover more about the community by stopping by the Sunland Visitors Center and can take in a multitude of exhibits at the Santa Cruz Valley Historical Museum, which are both located in the freshly remodeled 1930 schoolhouse that once served as Toltec School, 22

Fiestas Patrias one of the first schools in the community. West of the main part of town there is also Robson Ranch, a thriving active adult community — complete with its very own golf course — that has brought a new collection of people in. The city’s downtown has also received some major facelifts of late, including a new city hall and police station, with more revitalization promised in the near future.

ELOY BUCKET LIST SKYDIVE ARIZONA No bucket list is complete without taking a plunge from a perfectly good airplane. Luckily, Eloy has the perfect place in Skydive Arizona, which is a premier facility in all of Arizona. In fact, the expansive facility hosts some of the biggest skydiving competitions in the world, something to experience even for those who never want to do it themselves. FIESTAS PATRIAS Soak in Hispanic heritage at the annual Fiestas Patrias festival, held every September. Ballet folklorico dancers and Latino musical acts perform all day, while a carnival takes place in the heart of downtown.

Florence Jr. Parada

FLORENCE Walking through downtown Florence can be like taking a step into the past, when Arizona was just a territory in the Wild West. Stroll through the historic downtown district and take in the architecture of times gone by while marveling at how small business owners have brought new life to these old buildings. Nestled along the Gila River, the area now known as Florence has been settled for many centuries, first by Indigenous peoples, then by those heading West shortly after the Civil War. One veteran of that war was Levi Ruggles, who founded the town in 1866 after discovering the agricultural possibilities along the river. Shortly after, Pinal County was established by the territorial government, and Florence was named the county seat. Settlers started flowing into town, and some struck it lucky when they found silver nearby and established the Silver King Mine. Business was booming in the Old West. Of course, any Western town worth its weight needs famous shootouts and criminals, and Florence has plenty in its history. Perhaps the most notable incident took place in 1888 when a political dispute between Sheriff Pete Gabriel and his deputy Joe Phy turned personal, and a gunfight ensued. This would prove to be fatal for Phy.

The Arizona State Prison was established in Florence. Also, many famous trials have occurred in the county and beginning in 1891, they were housed in the Second Pinal County Courthouse, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area that still stands

today. Winnie Ruth Judd, Pearl Hart and Eva Dugan (the only woman to be executed by the state of Arizona, and whose decapitation during hanging changed the course of the death penalty forever) are just some of the big names St. A nthon y’s Monast who met justice er y in Florence. GOLD CANYON Seated at the base of the majestic Superstition Mountains, Gold Canyon is the picturesque Arizona getaway for anyone who loves golf, or just taking in sights of one of the state’s most remarkable wilderness areas. Gold Canyon all began with the development of the Gold Canyon Resort & Spa, located at the foot of Dinosaur Mountain. Though it was built between 1979 and 1980, the resort continues to serve guests from all over the world to this day. Plenty of westerns have been filmed in Gold Canyon, with the community near the site of the old Apacheland Movie & Bar t n ra u ta es Wahoo’s R Ranch. Popular movies such as “Charro!” starring Elvis Presley and at least part of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler” series were filmed at the site. Rogers even stayed at the Gold Canyon Resort while filming. Annually between early February and late March — or April, depending on the year — Gold Canyon hosts the Arizona Renaissance Festival at Fairhaven, a 50-acre plot of land that is transformed to look like a town in 16th century Europe. This multi-weekend attraction is packed with a host of Renaissance-themed entertainment (including jousting!), food and activities and offers a fully immersive experience where event-goers can even dress up to look like citizens of the age.

MARANA Straddling two counties — Pima and Pinal — the town of Marana is home to gorgeous mountain views and sweeping Sonoran Desert vistas, providing the perfect backdrop for Western-themed films and commercials. Cowboy movies and western films have been shot in Marana since the silent film era and over the years, hundreds of movies were made within the town’s boundaries, including “The Crossroads” in 2021. Situated on the western side of Pinal County, what once was a small, rural community with a rich history has quickly grown into a bustling young city that offers proximity to the Phoenix Metro Area and the Ak-Chin Indian Community as well as plenty of adventure within its own borders.

Though Maricopa officially became a city in 2003, the community’s history dates back to the 1800s with the establishment of Maricopa Wells — one of three locations established before what would eventually come to be known as modern day Maricopa. The Maricopa Historical Society chronicles the history of all three locations and their lasting legacy at the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center located at Heritage Park. The museum also provides a plethora of exhibits about the city’s beginnings as a key stop for the stagecoach. But perhaps among the most notable exhibits is the Silver Horizon, a historic California Zephyr rail car that once shuttled passengers between Chicago and California on a legendary railroad scenic route. The train car is now parked outside the museum and, in some ways, serves as its own museum of sorts, offering a glimpse into the train car’s travels as well as the time it served as 30

Life Under the Oaks Lavender Farm

ORACLE Located on the very edge of Pinal County, Oracle is a small community of a little over 3,000 people according to the 2020 Census. It sits in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, situated not far from the city of Tucson. But while it may be small by some standards, Oracle is home to some big attractions including the Biosphere 2. Though the project first made national headlines in the 1990s for its sealed experiments involving scientists and researchers run by a private company, today, the Biosphere serves as a research and education facility run by the University of Arizona that is open to the public. Guests can walk the indoor trails around the 3.14-acre facility, which take them on a tour of the five different biomes onsite that scientists use to study 2 Earth and its different Biosphere ecosystems. Biomes at the facility mimic several different climates found on Earth, ranging from the ocean to tropical forests. 32

Oracle State Park, a 4,000-acre wildlife rescue, offers up a fantastic chance to do exactly that, with wildlife viewing opportunities available year-round. A large variety of animals call the state park home, from the great horned owl to the gray fox and even the white-striped skunk. Peppersauce Cave, located just 10 miles to the south, is another rare jewel for those who love adventure. The limestone cave is a destination for those who like to explore on their own, as there are no guided tours, and the cave is only accessible by hiking (wear comfortable shoes!). The cave features 7,000 feet of tunnels and an underground lake that visitors can swim in.

Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre

QUEEN CREEK Though the body of water known as Queen Creek actually starts up in the eastern mountains near the town of Superior, the creek runs down through Queen Creek Canyon and into the area that is the present-day town of Queen Creek. Sitting in the valley not far from the San Tan Mountains, Queen Creek is a vibrant and bustling town in both Maricopa and Pinal counties that was once a largely agricultural community with an active rail spur where people would frequently flag down the train to get to Phoenix. Though the community has grown significantly since that time, and the rail spur no longer is active, Queen Creek has managed to retain its ties to its agricultural heritage with a few large-scale farming projects located in the area. One of the most widely recognized of these is Schnepf Farms, a fourth-generation family farm that is open to visitors and maintains a packed calendar with festivals, holiday events and entertainment throughout the year. Visitors to the farm can pick their own fruits and vegetables from the onsite garden, including peaches and the right pumpkin for them — while enjoying a number of other fun activities at the farm — depending on the season. The farm also features an onsite bakery with plenty of delicious treats on the menu, including cookies, pies, brownies and cupcakes. Another major agricultural attraction, located just across the street from Schnepf Farms, is the Queen Creek Olive Mill, which frequently brings visitors from all over Arizona for a taste of their olive oil — made from olives grown on the mill’s Queen Creek property. SAN TAN VALLEY Not far from the community of Queen Creek is the unincorporated area of San Tan Valley. As the largest community in Pinal County, San Tan Valley provides a rich mix of urban life and activities as well as the peace offered by a more rural community thanks to the area’s lengthy agricultural legacy. For those looking to add to the experience of dining out, a wonderful option is San Tan Flats, known for its incredible steaks as well as its massive outdoor patio area and regular schedule of live music. The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor seating and promises guests that they will have “all the fun of camping without having to sleep on the ground.” As in other parts of the county, golf is another big attraction in San Tan Valley. SUPERIOR With so much to see and do, it’s hard to be bored in a town like Superior. And history buffs will feel right at home. Superior began to form as a mining town in 1875 with the filing of the Hub Mine claim and later, the Irene Mine claim. When the claims merged, the area was named the Silver Queen Mine. Today, the town is home to several museums and miles of hiking trails, providing plenty of opportunity to explore and become immersed in history. The World’s Smallest Museum is located in Superior. Housed in a tiny shed in front of Buckboard City Cafe, The World’s Smallest Museum, which is listed on the World Record Academy website as the world’s smallest museum, showcases a collection of items used in everyday life over the years. The Superior Historical Society’s Bob Jones Museum, located on Main Street in Superior, is a place dedicated to preserving the area’s western and mining history and sharing it with others. On a dusty hilltop in Superior, history buffs will find the gravesite of 38

Celia Anne Blaylock Earp, also known as Mattie Earp, the common-law wife of Wyatt Earp. A small gravestone in the Historic Pinal Cemetery marks the spot where she is buried. Superior is also home to the old Silver King mine and graveyard as well as the Caboose Center and Mine History Trail. On Highway 60, Caboose Park and Superior History Trail feature various open air exhibits that pay tribute to the area’s mining history.

The Legends of Superior Trails system connects outdoor enthusiasts to the Arizona National Scenic Trail. In 2020, the final phase of trails from Pinal City — a ghost town — through Superior and into Queen Creek was completed. The Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Arizona’s oldest botanical garden, is also near Superior. It’s on Highway 60 and maintains a collection of more than 6,000 plants. With miles of trails, the arboretum is a popular place to visit to appreciate nature, listen to chirping birds and soak in some Arizona sun. Throughout the year, various tours, nature talks and activities are offered.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM SUPERIOR’S FAMOUS ARBORETUM CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

For nearly 100 years, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum has been a place for people to fall in love with the desert and be inspired by nature. Strolling along its nearly five miles of trails and gardens, visitors will find plants and trees from around the globe. Boyce Thompson Arboretum is Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden and a top tourism site. It is managed by the nonprofit Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, which has a mission of inspiring appreciation and stewardship of desert plants, wildlife and ecosystems through education, research and conservation. “Boyce Thompson Arboretum was founded in 1924 by copper mining magnate William Boyce Thompson,” said Sharon Elliott, director of Marketing and Communication for the organization. Thompson was interested in plants and envisioned the arboretum as a place of research. “He founded the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in Yonkers, New York, and wanted to establish a similar institution here in Arizona specifically to study the plants of arid regions,” Elliott said. The foundation for what would become the Boyce Thompson Arboretum began in 1923 when Thompson built a new winter home, the Picket Post House, overlooking Queen Creek. On Oct. 21, 1923, he and his wife spent their first night in their new home, which would later become part of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. An engineer, financier and philanthropist, he founded Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company in Globe-Miami and Magma Copper Company in Superior and served as the first president of both companies. He established the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on 400 acres surrounding the Picket Post House. 40 2024 – 2025 Explore Pinal County Visitors Guide

The project included the creation of a new lake, Ayer Lake, to serve as a water reservoir for the arboretum and the construction of several buildings, including an administrative facility and two greenhouses. Over the next century, the arboretum grew, adding plants, trees and specimens from around the world while also forming relationships with the University of Arizona and the Arizona Parks system. Hundreds of researchers and volunteers spent time at the facility. “The arboretum has a rich history of research, which includes publishing the Desert Plants Journal in 1979, a publication that is still in print today,” Elliott said. In 1988, the facility started its Desert Legume Program in collaboration with the University of Arizona, which Elliott said was “another significant milestone in our research history.” And in 2023, arboretum staffers formed a new research partnership with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. “Apart from research, we are also committed to conservation. In fact, 9.8% of BTA’s 3,897 plant species are endangered or threatened with extinction, and we take our responsibility to protect them seriously,” Elliott said. The arboretum is a popular tourist destination with thousands visiting every year. “We are also a cherished location for many of our visitors, who have fond memories of being married or engaged here, or who visited us as children and now bring their own children and grandchildren to experience the magic of the arboretum,” Elliott said. Visitors to the facility spend hours exploring the trails, appreciating nature, photographing the plant specimens or taking part in educational nature walks and various classes and other events.

GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY The Gila River Indian Community covers 583 square miles in both Maricopa and Pinal counties and includes seven districts — Blackwater, Hashan Kehk, Sacaton, Santan, Casa Blanca, Komatke and Maricopa Colony. The community maintains large-scale farming operations, industrial developments as well as casinos, resorts and spas, golf, a large upscale shopping center, a motor sports park, equestrian center and other attractions. The community’s administrative offices and center of business are in Sacaton. Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a federally protected site tied to the Pima people of the Gila River Indian Community, is just off the reservation in Coolidge and welcomes about 10,000 visitors every year. The Gila River Indian Community, which includes the Akimel O’odham and Pee-Posh tribes, was established in 1859.

SANTAN MOUNTAIN CASINO THE LATEST ADDITION TO GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY PROPERTIES Nestled with a mountain background and ample desert vistas, Santan Mountain Casino is the glittering new addition to the Gila River Indian Community’s property portfolio and one of Pinal County’s newest tourist destinations. The new casino, at 7101 S. Gilbert Road near Chandler, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and includes 813 slot machines, 20 gaming tables, five restaurants and the largest casino sportsbook in Arizona. Dining options vary with casual eateries, a walk-up coffee bar and upscale but relaxed sit-down restaurants all aimed at offering a diverse menu to tempt the taste buds. Players visiting the casino will find slot machines featuring the latest themes in gaming along with a High Limit Room that has mechanical reels and video slots. The casino also includes electronic roulette, craps and video poker and a variety of table games. PINAL COUNTY’S COPPER CORRIDOR FROM SUPERIOR TO ORACLE, ARIZONA With gorgeous natural scenery, towering cliffs, vast desert vistas and a vibrant history, Pinal County’s Copper Corridor region connects several iconic communities and offers an only-in-Arizona scenic drive. The Copper Corridor region is defined by its mining, past and present. Running just below the state’s horizontal divide, a run through the region takes drivers through cafe-lined streets with endless mountain views. Visitors will find antique shops, art galleries, plenty of music and food as well as gorgeous places to stop, hike, picnic, bird watch, take in a sunset or enjoy an off-road adventure. The route begins in Superior and follows Highways 177 and 77, traveling south through Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman, San Manuel and Oracle, and ending at Oracle Junction. Grab some binoculars and a camera before heading out on this amazing scenic drive as there are plenty of must-see stops along the way, including Aravaipa Canyon and the ASARCO Ray Mine Overlook. KEARNY — With its location at the base of the Pinal Mountain Range, along the banks of the Gila River, Kearny is the heart of the Copper Basin. Each year, the town hosts the popular Gila River Music Festival, which aims to highlight all the town has to offer. Kearny was built in 1958 as a planned community and became incorporated in 1959. It’s now home to a golf course, an airport and Kearny Lake, a recreation area. Kearny is often referred to as “the friendliest town on the Arizona 48

Trail” and serves as a gateway community for the trail’s various hiking and other outdoor activities. The Mescal Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Area is also there. The General Kearny Inn is a part of the town’s history and has welcomed visitors since 1960. HAYDEN — Home to only about 900 people, Hayden has a nine-hole public golf course and is also a place to explore some of the best rock climbing in Arizona. Founded in 1911 as a company town for Kennecott Copper Corporation, Hayden still has mining as its economic base. It is home to the ASARCO Hayden Smelter. The company’s 1,000-foot smelter chimney is a prominent fixture on the town landscape and is one of the tallest structures in Arizona. WINKELMAN — Adventure awaits in Winkelman. With forests, desert, a lake and river, the community is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream with various outdoor activities — everything from heart-pumping rock climbing to relaxing, get-away-from-it-all fishing spots. The town is known for its fabulous scenery and mountain views. Located on part of the Old West Highway route, the town is steeped in history as well as adventure. A featured stop is the Winkelman Flats Public Park, adjacent to the Gila River. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit as the park offers swimming and tubing as well as camping, fishing and relaxing picnic spots. MAMMOTH — With its nickname being the “Gateway to the Galiuro Mountains,” Mammoth is a must-see town situated on the banks of the San Pedro River and at the base of the Galiuro Mountains. A former mining camp, it was founded in 1876. It was later incorporated as a town in 1958. While in Mammoth, visitors can hike, backpack and enjoy off-road adventure and beautiful scenery. Mammoth is known as a great place for bird watching. While out exploring Turkey Creek Trail in the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, nature watchers might spot deer, javelina, roadrunners and other wildlife. SAN MANUEL — With picture-perfect Sonoran Desert backdrops and views of the Galiuro Mountains, San Manuel is the perfect place to become immersed in nature or enjoy a relaxing day visiting restaurants. Trails in San Manuel offer plenty of hiking and biking opportunities. San Manuel was the first master-planned community designed by Del Webb and is an excellent example of midcentury-modern urban planning and architecture. While in town, visitors can pop into the San Manuel Historical Museum to see exhibits and examples of life in San Manuel’s bygone eras. Motorists can take a short, 25-mile scenic detour and drive along Redington Road, known for its dramatic views of saguaro cactus. The road descends into the San Pedro River Valley. ORACLE JUNCTION — Located at the junction of State Routes 77 and 79, Oracle Junction was once known as Walnut Service Station. COPPER CORRIDOR BUCKET LIST KEARNY LAKE Stop by Kearny Lake to appreciate the scenery and spend some hours hiking and relaxing. RUSTIC LUXURIES Stay at an authentic bunkhouse and working cattle ranch, A-Diamond Ranch in Kearny, or get back to nature in Winkelman with a stay at Aravaipa Farms Orchard & Inn, which offers a rustic yet luxury getaway with plenty of stargazing, bird watching and hiking opportunities. OFF-ROAD ADVENTURING Enjoy the thrill of an off-road adventure on the trails and desert areas around Winkelman and Kearny. Among the spots offering rentals is Peppersauce Motorsports in San Manuel. ROCK CLIMBING Go rock climbing. Among the popular sites along the area is “Tamo” at Tam O’Shanter Peak. COPPER CORRIDOR TRAIL RUN Run in the Copper Corridor Trail Run, a marathon event that begins in Superior and offers 50-, 31-, 17- and 12-kilometer runs as well as a 5-mile route. CALENDAR OF EVENTS Fall SUPERIOR BURRO RUN Generally held in October, this event features burro races on Main Street. PUMPKIN AND CHILI PARTY AT SCHNEPF FARMS brings amusement rides, live entertainment, a dog show and much more to the farm for visitors to enjoy. It’s held throughout the month of October, and even features a 10-acre corn maze that event-goers can try to navigate their way through. GARLIC FESTIVAL AT THE QUEEN CREEK OLIVE MILL This festival celebrates everything garlic in Italian cooking over 10 days. FALL FESTIVAL Set in Marana’s Heritage Park, the festival celebrates the town’s agricultural history with demonstrations, a youth rodeo, live music and plenty of food. HARVEST FESTIVAL Featuring hay rides, a pumpkin patch, classic car show, quilt show as well as a plenty of vendors and crafters. This event takes place in the fall at the Pinal Fairgrounds and Event Center at Eleven Mile Corner. 78

Winter ELECTRIC LIGHT PARADE, held the first Saturday in December. This event kicks off the holiday season with hundreds of brightly lit entries. It’s the largest public event of the year for Casa Grande. MERRY COPA turns Maricopa’s Copper Sky Regional Park into a winter wonderland for a few days in December. A tree-lighting ceremony, fake snow and notable characters like Santa and the Grinch are typically part of the experience. CASA GRANDE STREET FAIR & CAR SHOW, January in downtown Casa Grande. This event features live entertainment, food and hundreds of vendors. LOST DUTCHMAN DAYS RODEO is an action-packed four-day event, which usually takes place the last weekend of February in Apache Junction and features a range of rodeo events as well as a parade and carnival.

Spring PLEIN AIR PAINTING COMPETITION, held every spring. This event features artists spanning throughout Casa Grande aiming to capture a moment in time as they paint scenes around the community. FOUNDERS’ DAY PARADE AND FESTIVITIES. Held in March, Founders’ Day includes cultural performances, a car show, historical experiences, food trucks, artisan vendors, exhibits and other fun elements in Marana. ROOTS N’ BOOTS, typically held in March at the Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek. This multiday event brings a host of attractions including a carnival, antique tractor show, petting zoo, rodeo, dances and so much more. PINAL COUNTY FAIR, hosted at the fairgrounds and event center in Eleven Mile Corner. The fair brings a host of fun activities to the area including rides, games, livestock judging and plenty of food. Held every March. APACHE LEAP MINING FESTIVAL AND CARNIVAL. Held in the spring, this three-day event includes live entertainment, mining competitions, a parade, carnival and vendors in Superior. COUNTRY THUNDER is one of the largest music festivals in Arizona and is a must for any country music fan. Typically hosted in April of every year, the event brings well-known country music acts to the historic Canyon Moon Ranch near Florence for a four-day run filled with camping, dancing and plenty of live music. 80
