A Desert Town

Imagine walking along the banks of the Gila River near Florence to hear the echoes of the people who came before. The ﬁrst Arizonans known as the Hohokam or Huhugam thrived in the desert landscape using a sophisticated canal system that spanned 500 miles. Huhugam society ﬂourished supporting 50,000 - 60,000 people who built large religious centers, farmed, traded, and created artisan jewelry and pottery. Nearby is the “Great House,” a multi-story, multiroomed, adobe structure, now called the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. The ruins remain as a legacy of these prehistoric people. Visitors come from all over to see this fascinating structure.

A typical Florence saloon. Fast forward to the 1880s when Florence earned its reputation as a true, wild west town built on mining and cattle ranching. Cowboys and Silver King miners traveled to Florence on Saturday night for one of its many saloons on Main Street. Florence also had its share of shootouts!

The shootout at the Tunnel Saloon (so named for its underground drinking room), was between two former lawmen! While drinking and gambling in the Tunnel Saloon, Sheriff Pete Gabriel was on edge as he heard his Deputy, Joe Phy was looking for him. Each time someone entered the saloon, Gabriel reached for his gun. Phy was sitting on a bench across the street waiting for Gabriel to leave the saloon. But Phy’s temper got the best of him as he grew tired of waiting and entered the saloon. Some say Gabriel fired first while others believe Phy fired first. The two men fell out into the street and continued shooting until both were seriously wounded. Phy fell to the ground and Gabriel staggered on down the street. Gabriel and Phy refused to share a doctor, so a second doctor was brought to Florence from the Gila River Indian Reservation! Ultimately Phy died and Gabriel survived to live out his life plagued by nightmares of the incident. Imagine the journey from Yuma to Florence in the early 1900s. In 1908, eighteen inmates in the company of two or three guards got off a train at the Florence Depot north of town and walked across the desert and Gila River to build the 2nd Territorial Prison. The state of Arizona had the money for materials but not labor, so Warden Thomas Rynning established a policy called “two-for-one” in which an inmate worked for two days building the prison and then received time off his sentence. During this time, the

Florence’s image has revolved around that institution since the early days. administration believed in self-suﬃciency; so the inmates farmed crops, dairy, and hogs, all of which fed the inmates. Excess food went to other institutions such as the Pinal County General Hospital and many school districts. Today, the Arizona State Prison continues to contribute to the community.

this three-day competition with events including bull riding, wild horse racing, ribbon roping, “money the hard way,” and more. “Money the Hard Way” involved tying a bag of money to a bull’s head and letting the bull loose. Inmates were challenged to grab the money from the bull’s head and claim the victory cash. Think about how fascinating this event would have been to watch!

Think of a fun recreation activity. Inmates of the Arizona State Prison participated in many of those activities within and outside the walls of the prison. Sports such as baseball and boxing were popular among the inmates. Local Florence residents often competed against the inmates in baseball games. The Arizona State Prison supported the arts with music and theater opportunities. The inmate band, “Stars Behind Bars”, marched in the annual Junior Parada Parade with the community. Most notably, the Arizona State Prison held an “Outlaw Rodeo” from 1981-1987. Many residents of Florence and beyond enjoyed viewing

Florence is home to many notable political ﬁgures, including four Arizona state governors and Earnest McFarland, or “Mac,” who had an unprecedented career that began in Florence. Mac began as a county attorney and defense attorney in Florence. From there, Mac served in all three branches of the government: as a U.S. Senator, where he was the majority leader, the Governor of Arizona, and an Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice. As a Senator, Mac lobbied for the Central Arizona Project (CAP) for irrigation and reclamation purposes. His vision to secure Arizona’s water rights is a noteworthy accomplishment that ensured a dependable water supply for future generations. Mac authored hundreds of legal opinions but most notably,

TO W N H I S T O R Y Miranda vs. Arizona. The most significant accomplishment of Mac’s career is his contribution to writing the G.I. Bill. Mac never forgot his Florence roots and many believe that Florence shaped Mac into the man he became. After years of public service, Max returned to Florence weekly to oversee his acres of farmland. Traditions are rich in Florence. We are home to the largest youth rodeo in the country, known as the Junior Parada. The Parada began during the Great Depression to raise money to supply milk for needy children. The Parada continued to grow, which led to an annual rodeo for children ages 4 to 18, occurring on Thanksgiving Day weekend. Florence’s western environment drew celebrities interested in ranching and rodeos, such as Rex Allen, Ken Curtis (Festus in Gunsmoke), and Gene Autry. These celebrities not only supported the rodeo, but participated in the parade festivities. The Junior Parada helped Florence become the “Cowboy Cradle of the Great Southwest” because many young rodeo contestants went on to receive national recognition. The Junior Parada lives on today. Young cowboys and cowgirls compete in roping, chute, goat tying, barrel racing, sheep riding and more. Florence has a rich WWII history. Did you know Florence had a POW Camp during WWII? Thirteen thousand Italian and German prisoners from the Afrika Korps were sent to Florence for the duration of the war. The prisoners picked cotton fields since our local men had all gone to war. Florence is also the proud home of the U.S.S. Indianapolis survivor, Adolfo “Harpo” Celaya. Joining the Navy after seeing the poster, “Join the Navy and see the world”, he survived the attack on his ship, and today our U.S. Post Office is named in his honor. Walk down historic Main Street to see intact adobe and brick buildings from the 1800s still in use. Florence’s Historic District has over 100 original commercial and private properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Florence has put forth great effort to preserve and restore its authentic historic buildings. The annual Historic Home tour on the second Saturday in February, celebrates

the Historic District and opens private homes to the public. Explore why we say Florence is a hidden treasure among Arizona towns. It embodies so much history in one place, including prehistoric people, Native Americans, Spanish, Mexican, pioneers, farming , ranching, mining, cowboys, rodeo, county government, outlaws, lawmen, prisons, and movies such as “Riot” and “Murphy’s Romance.”

Designed by Florence’s founder, Levi Ruggles, and built in 1878 of adobe brick, it not only was a center for law and justice, but also hosted town meetings, church meetings, and a weekly dance. Through the years the building remained central to community residents. Upon construction of a new courthouse in 1891, it became the Pinal County Hospital for close to 50 years, followed by public health, and then a museum. It now serves as McFarland State Historic Park, a fine example of historic Sonoran transitional architecture and a showcase of area history. As you step through the door, you will enter the original sheriff ’s office, now a well-stocked visitor center. Further investigation will uncover early local history, our newly expanded Florence WWII POW camp exhibit, a historic hospital exhibit, and the courtroom honoring one-time resident Ernest McFarland: former governor, senate majority leader, Arizona supreme court justice, and Father of the G.I. CA S A G R A N D E R U I N S NAT I O N A L M O N U M E N T Casa Grande Ruins Reservation was created on June 22, 1892, by order of President Benjamin Harrison to protect a one-of-a-kind remaining Casa Grande or “Great House.” As a result, Casa Grande became the ﬁrst prehistoric and cultural site to be established in the United States. The 480-acre reservation boundary changed in 1909, but retained the same acreage. An act in 1926 reduced that area to 472.5 acres. Some controversy has occurred over the years about the exact name of the monument. Originally, it was set aside as Casa Grande Ruins Reservation. In 1918 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it to be Casa Grande Monument. Subsequent congressional acts in 1926 and 1930 called it Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. The Casa Grande is a four-story building as large as a castle and equal to the largest church in these lands of Sonora. Close to this Casa Grande are thirteen smaller houses, somewhat more dilapidated, and the ruins of many others, which make it evident that in ancient times there had been a city here. Jesuit padre Eusebio Francisco Kino wrote: “On this occasion and on later ones I have learned and heard, and at times have seen, that further to the east, north and west there are seven or eight more of these large old house and ruins of whole cities, with many broken metates and jars, charcoal, etc.” From that point onward, the Great House received a notoriety that caused many travelers to come to behold this work of a mysterious people and to speculate on its origins and meaning.

She was an advocate for seniors and served several terms on the Arizona Advisory Council for the Aging. She organized a local group to work on the problems of aging, which eventually led to the White House Conference on Aging. Dorothy helped to organize the Pinal Council for Senior Citizens and served as their ﬁrst president. Dorothy served on the Advisory Council for Central Arizona College’s adult education. She was a member of the CAC Women’s Barbershop Chorus and her church choir. Mrs. Nolan served as Past Nobel Grande of the Rebekah Lodge and Chief Matriarch of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary. She was a member of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, Pinal County Development Board, Pinal County Historical Society and volunteered on many local charity organizations. She was the mother of two children and had several grandchildren as well. Dorothy will always be remembered for her dedication to seniors. Her memory lives on at the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center.

ELOY — Students at Toltec Elementary School received a surprise guest Thursday morning as the kids were greeted by the Arizona Cardinals organization for their Milk and Cookies reading event. The Cardinals have teamed up with Salt River Project and Safeway to create a program that encourages and promotes the importance of reading and literacy for grade school kids. The students were able to enjoy milk and cookies, interact with Cardinals mascot Big Red and hear stories read by former Cardinals player Michael Bankston. Bankston played in the NFL for nine years, with his rookie year coming in 1992 with the Cardinals, and ending his career in 2000 with the Cincinnati Bengals. Bankston said that it was a pleasure to come out to the school and meet the kids, mentioning how he enjoys opportunities like this. “I loved reading to the kids, and I love answering their questions, it lets them come out of their shell,” Bankston said. “It was a blessing, to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, the enjoyment and the excitement, it really is a blessing.” After his time in the NFL, Bankston started working with juveniles and tried to help them build a foundation for their adult life. Bankston stressed to the kids the importance of going to college so that they can be successful in their adult lives. “It is important for them to understand the importance of getting a high school diploma and going on to college,” Bankston said. “The significance for them to have a sustainable fu-

Williams grew up in Casa Grande and has lived in the area much of her life. But she said that while many people knew she was the daughter of R.C. Tison and the sister of Gary Tison, most didn’t realize the extent of the abuse and trauma she experienced at home as a child. “I don’t talk much about my childhood,” she said. “Even people I’ve known all my life don’t know what my life was like.” Books have been written and movies made about Gary Tison’s crime spree. FLORENCE — The mental capacity of a Coolidge man to stand trial for the 2012 death of a Casa Grande man is being questioned again. Abdullatif Aldosary, 56, is accused of killing Orlando Requena, 26, from Casa Grande in Maricopa on Nov. 27, 2012. He is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and misconduct with weapons. He was also charged with the bombing of the Casa Grande Social Security office a few days after the death of Requena; those charges have Aldosary been dismissed. Attorneys for Aldosary requested that Aldosary’s mental competency be re-evaluated in early September. As he was being led into the courtroom for a hearing hearin on the matter, Aldosary yelled an obscenity at Pinal County Superior Court Judge Delia Neal and called her derogatory names several times before being immediately led out of the courtroom by Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies. Neal agreed to allow two doctors to re-evaluate Aldosary’s mental competency over the next couple of weeks with the hope that they would have a report finished before the start of Aldosary’s trial on Nov. 30. Aldosary’s attorney stated that she wasn’t able to tell the court if he wanted to attend his trial in-person or by video or if he wanted to testify in his trial or if he was even aware that his trial had been set for Nov. 30. She hasn’t been able to discuss the case with him because he has been refusing to meet with her in-person or over video while he has been in the county jail and he has refused all of his mail.
