New benefit aims to combat rising costs With food prices still putting pressure on household budgets, the federal government is introducing a new benefit aimed at helping families and individuals manage the rising cost of everyday essentials. The newly approved Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will provide financial support to more than 12 million Canadians, especially those with low to modest incomes. The program replaces and expands the current GST/HST credit, offering increased payments starting this year. As an immediate measure, eligible Canadians will receive a one-time top-up payment by June 2026. This payment will be equal to 50 per cent of what they received under the GST credit for the 2025–2026 period. For many families, this extra support will come at a crucial time, as grocery bills and daily expenses continue to rise. See BENEFIT p13
