Winning hearts, making history The cheers came from everywhere. From Manila to Winnipeg, and in Filipino communities across Canada and beyond, fans followed the matches of Alex Eala, a young Filipina who has become one of the brightest new stars in world tennis. Families stayed awake late into the night, friends exchanged score updates on social media, and Filipino fans in Canada proudly waved the Philippine flag as Eala continued her remarkable rise on the international stage. For many, this sports story has become a story of Filipino pride. On August 4, 2026, Eala won the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, D.C., becoming the first Filipino, and the first Filipina, to capture a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour singles title. At only 21 years old, she achieved a milestone that had never been reached by a Filipino tennis player. Born on May 23, 2005, in Quezon City, Alexandra “Alex” Eala grew up in a family that valued both sports and education. Her mother, Rosemarie “Rizza” Maniego-Eala, represented the Philippines in swimming at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games, while her grandfather, Noli Eala, became a well-known sports executive.
