A volcanic eruption and a wedding Like many of my age and older, when Taal Volcano started erupting on January 12, the ash fall reminded me of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo on June 15, 1991. I was still living in Malabon at the time, and on that afternoon the skies turned prematurely dark. When I looked at one of our home’s windowsills, I noticed it was covered with powdery stuff that we would all find out later was the ash that Pinatubo had unleashed. For a while we were afraid that the ash would be so thick it would suffocate us; fortunately we could still breathe, but many people suffered respiratory illnesses and allergies. I know it was no laughing matter, but one of the funny things I remember was listening to the radio and hearing one reporter saying the “ash hole” was falling thick in the area he was reporting from. “Ash fall ba ‘kamo (Did you say ash fall)?” the anchor asked, apparently hoping to subtly correct the reporter who was unknowingly using an expletive. “Roger, ash hole, ash hole,” the reporter replied, too caught up in the moment to notice what he was actually saying.

Happening hundreds of kilometers from Mindanao, the eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas still affected the island in many ways. The ash fall on the first few days, while not as heavy as that from Pinatubo, was still more than enough to disrupt flights in and out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Hundreds of people, if not thousands, not only suffered cancelled flights but also had to pay for their rebooking because the airlines were not obliged to do it for free since the eruption was an “act of God.” Several of my friends got stranded at the airport as their flights got cancelled or were moved repeatedly. Even a week after the eruption, airports all over the country still had to deal with delays as airlines scrambled to accommodate those who lost their flights earlier and at the same time keep the schedules of unaffected ones. My own mother and siblings, who were traveling to Davao for my son’s wedding on January 20, suffered hours of delay as the backlog continued to disrupt schedules. There are no data yet on this but I imagine Mindanao – and Luzon for that

matter – have lost a considerable amount due to the disruption. For my wife and me, the eruption brought back memories of our own wedding in 1992 when a strike by air traffic controllers brought flights to a standstill. My mother and aunt were supposed to fly on the weekend before the wedding, but their trip kept being moved. After days of waiting (and being driven back and forth to the airport) they were finally able to fly – landing in Davao City about an hour after the wedding ceremony had already been performed. This time around the “jinx” did not happen and my side of the family happily made it to the wedding. Aside from Taal’s eruption, other things seemed set to disrupt our son’s wedding, the biggest of which was the death of an unclein-law on December 20 – exactly a month ahead. For a while we were afraid that someone would suggest we put off the ceremony. Fortunately the thought never came up and we proceeded as planned. As an “unofficial officiant” (I performed a large part of the ceremony but had to leave the legal parts to a pastor-friend who actually had a license to officiate), I started the ceremony with Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, where King Solomon famously wrote:

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die.” I continued that the same passage also says there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” While the time to mourn our loved ones never really ends, the time had also come to laugh and dance. As a father officiating his son’s wedding, I think I was expected to give some advice to my son and his bride. I did the opposite: I told them I actually had no words of wisdom to impart to them. Everything I needed to say, I told them, I had already said over the years not just by words but, more importantly, by action. The two of them saw how much I love my wife, and while it was never perfect, it was always earnest and true. In the end, my actions spoke louder than any message or sermon I could have given on their wedding day. Eight ingredients of a strong relationship “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 As we head into February, the month known for love and romance, this infamous bible verse is a basis upon which to reflect on the quality of our romantic relationships. I’ve had the gift of meeting and working with many couples. Sometimes, we cross paths professionally because they have a common goal that they want to work towards, or a conflict that they want to resolve. Sometimes, they are in my personal life and I observe how they interact with each other. If I had to answer the question of “What makes a couple successful?” there are indeed some basic strengths that power couples have: 1. Both partners are kind to themselves and others – People who are confident in themselves will in turn, not likely see their

partner with a critical eye. Those who are compassionate can recognize the troubles that others have, and so are more likely to want to help rather than blame. Aside from striving to be patient with each other, one meaningful way to grow together as a couple is to discuss how you can be charitable. Donating to the poor and sick can be a great way to feel that you as a couple are contributing to society. 2. You laugh together – Humour is an antidote to stress, anxiety and fear. Laughing at yourself and with your partner adds joy and an appreciation for life. The spotlight then is on positivity. Some studies support that playfulness and a sense of humour is one of the most attractive qualities in a mate. This makes sense even from an evolutionary perspective; someone who is playful is not aggressive in nature, so is someone safe to be around. A person who has a sense of humour conveys the feeling of being young, and hence is a good partner to have children with. 3. Each person is humble and forgives – For minor firsttime offenses (e.g. forgetting

about your promise to take out the garbage), it is good to forgive and forget about it – this will likely result in the same attitude from your partner when you make a mistake. With repeated and serious offenses, couples should talk about the problem, express hurt, and talk about the consequences and how to earn trust again. This is not always the easiest choice because it requires humility and feeling vulnerable. But the couple then moves towards true forgiveness, rather than getting angry, defensive, or ignoring the problem. This also lessens the likelihood of “tallying” or keeping score of all the things that your partner has done wrong, which only results in resentment and frustration. 4. You notice when good happens and acknowledge it – We teach young children to say “thank you” to show appreciation, but sometimes we forget to do this with our partner. When we express gratitude, we become more kind and affectionate towards our loved one. 5. You share your emotions – In my work with couples, I often hear different versions of, “we don’t talk about anything deep or meaningful.” Discussions about the household chores and

schedules are not enough to sustain a strong bond with your partner. Strong relationships involve open and frequent conversations about when and why each person is angry, sad, happy or scared. In addition, there is no sense of feeling criticized when one does share their feelings. A sense of being close to your loved one will lead to conversations about future goals and dreams with each other. 6. Less attention paid to other attractive people – According to Psychology Today (August 2015), when there is solid commitment between two partners, other people do not seem as attractive. A “block” comes up and you only have eyes for your loved one. Feeling unappreciated, criticized or that you are “walking on eggshells” with your partner indicates that there is some doubt in the quality of your relationship. This could lead to the consideration of someone else who can provide that sense of safety and security. 7. Each partner supports the other’s growth – Good partners will be encouraging and excited when a new opportunity for their loved one comes along, whether it is a career change, new exercise class or hobby, or an evening out See CHERYL p21

Canada as a destination for the former royals It is a rhetorical question to ask if you have been following the stories about the royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. They met recently with Queen Elizabeth to discuss relinquishing their royal duties and privileges. It appears that they want to live like us, without any of the privileges or responsibilities and go living without the benefit to being the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There is no reason why birthright should get in the way of personal choice and this is what the Queen has apparently acceded to. Why is this story about immigration? It would not be except that their preferred destination is Canada. Do they have any special privileges when it comes to immigration? Actually, under the Immigration Act and Regulations, they do not. They, like any other foreign nationals, must mull over their immigration options. What follows is a brief overview of options based on what is known about the couple. It is possible that, in terms of immigration options, Meghan Markle is actually the better principal applicant. The Duchess of Sussex graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Communication, located in Illinois, in 2003, and spent several years in Canada as an actress while performing in the TV show Suits. She may be a permanent resident of Canada. Prince Harry, in contrast, does not have a college or university degree but did attend the Royal Military Academy at

Sandhurst. If Meghan Markle is a Canadian permanent resident and has met the basic residency requirement of 730 days in the past five years, she could retain her permanent resident status. As a permanent resident of Canada she could sponsor her spouse Prince Harry and son Archie for permanent resident status. There are, of course, a number of unknowns about residency and the currency of her permanent resident status. I am not sure that her Canadian permanent resident status was foremost on her mind; given the very public life the couple have led over the past few years. If or when, however, she plans to sponsor her spouse and dependent son, she should have established her residency and life in Canada. The rules for the sponsorship of a spouse and accompanying dependent from outside or, for that matter inside Canada, are no different than those that face all sponsors and applicants. Meghan Markle would have to meet eligibility requirements and Prince Harry and Archie would have to be admissible. If Meghan Markle is not a permanent resident of Canada then her options would not be different from other foreign nationals who have spent some time in Canada pursuing their artistic careers. She could possibly qualify under express entry for the federal skilled worker program. She would have to provide evidence

of English language proficiency (IELTS or CELPIP General) and provide an Education Credentials Assessment. Her husband and son could be included in the submission as accompanying dependents. Meghan Markle also would have the option of applying to Canada permanently as a selfemployed person. Her eligibility would be based upon her relevant experience in cultural activities as an actress. Her eligibility under this category would require two years of recent experience, which she may not have. What about Prince Harry? He is a British citizen and therefore visa exempt. However, he and Meghan, if she is not a permanent resident, would have to hold an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This is something Prince Harry would have experience with because he recently spent one month vacationing in Canada. As visitors he and baby Archie could enter on their UK passport and spent up to six months before returning to their UK home of Frogmore Cottage. A Royal spokesman declared, “With the Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations.” Are Prince Harry and his family intent on temporary residence in Canada only for periods up to six months at a time or something more permanent? This is something we are not privy to. In closing, it would appear that the options facing the Duke and

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle going to church at Sandringham on Christmas Day 2017. Photo by Mark Jones - Cropped from Flickr version from Wikipedia Duchess of Sussex are similar to that of any other foreign nationals but the federal government may intervene on their behalf. However, over 70 per cent of Canadians polled think that Canada should not bear the cost of security for the family inside Canada. At this juncture I am not sure if there are polling numbers in support of or opposition to their immigration. It is gratifying to know that our quality of life is second to none and Canada remains a choice

destination of even one of the most famous couples of our day. What’s love got to do with it? Workplace romance happens everywhere. People fall in love everywhere and sometimes flirt around in the workplace. The reality is that members of the workforce socialize mainly at work. Many of us meet most of our friends at work and romantic relationships may even form. According to Vault.com’s 2017 Office Romance Survey, 57 per cent of the participants surveyed stated that they got involved in some kind of office romance. Twenty one per cent of these office romances were random hook-ups. Sixteen per cent led to long term relationships while 14 per cent led to ongoing casual relationships. Thirty six per cent of those who engaged in workplace romance worked in the same department. Interactions may start with a simple compliment or a playful

nudge. In part, the rise of digital connectivity contributes to further interactions, as most employees are now more accessible around the clock via smartphone. However, there’s a fine line between being flirtatious and being over-friendly. For example, if Supervisor XYZ or Co-worker ABC compliments you a lot but never does it with anyone else, he or she is probably flirting with you. Barack and Michelle Obama met when she worked as a supervisor during a summer that Barack worked at a law firm. Their relationship worked out well, but not all of them do. For the most part, workplace relationships may not cause any issues. If it does not create a conflict of interest (i.e. employee reporting to a direct supervisor or manager), and the work is getting done, then it

should not be a problem. Here are some helpful pointers to be mindful of when interacting with colleagues or when considering asking somebody out: Be familiar with company policies Although some organizations have no strict no-romance policies, it is very important to familiarize oneself with policies before getting involved with a co-worker. In some companies, relationships are allowed as long as the person of interest does not work in the same department or reports to them. Avoid conflict of interest Many organizations consider employee and supervisor relationships a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest in the workplace is when a person makes a decision based on their

personal gain rather than making decisions based on business reasons. For instance, influencing the recruitment or promotion of an employee of interest would be an example of a conflict where the decision is not in line with the business but rather with their own personal interests. We know that interpersonal relationships at work will inevitably develop. While some relationships are successful, there is a risk and it could be far more complex than one may think. Awareness and good judgement are important because, ultimately, personal integrity is your job security. Rizal’s first love With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it is fitting to read about love in history and there is no better way to see Rizal as a typical lovesmitten adolescent (with pimples?) than to read his Memorias de Un Estudiante de Manila (translated by Leon Ma. Guerrero), covering his birth and early years to 1878. This concerns Rizal’s first crush on a 14-yearold “virginal, attractive and engaging” girl named Segunda Katigbak, whom he describes as “not the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, but I have not met another more alluring and beguiling… from time to time she looked at me and I blushed.” Segunda, referred to in his diary as “K”, was a boarding student at the Colegio de la Concordia where his sisters and his future fiancée, Leonor Rivera, also studied. Rizal used his sisters as an excuse to visit K and in one of these visits they talked about

flowers and K asked him if he had a girlfriend. He replied, “No, I never dreamed of having one because I know pretty well that nobody would pay any attention to me, especially the pretty ones.” K answered, “What? You deceive yourself. Do you want me to find you one?” Rizal said, “Thanks, senorita, but I do not want to bother you.” The visits continued until Rizal accepted the reality that K was already engaged. However, he could not resist her charms. In one visit, she gave him a white rose for his hatband, saying that the flower came from Rizal’s sister. During his next visit, Rizal asked her about the rose, saying that his sister was incapable of making such, so K told him the truth and he promised to keep the rose as long as he lived, adding, “Do you know it is very painful for me to lose you after having known you?” She tearfully answered, “But I

am not getting married!” She stopped short of telling Rizal she really loved him. Rizal wrote: Our visits continued. I abstained – rather, I forbade my heart to love… perhaps she really loves me. I’m not rich or handsome; I am neither sophisticated nor attractive. I adopted a course of silence, determined that until I should see greater proofs of sympathy between us, I would not subject myself to her yoke, or tell her that I love her. News of the affair spread, and before long, all their friends and relatives were talking about them. Rizal was shattered, for all they had at this point, in the modern idiom, was simply an “understanding.” It was not yet “serious.” Much later, his letters to Leonor Rivera (Taimis) were written in code and with codenames to avoid all the fuss. Rizal avoided an explicit declaration of his love. “…I spent the night… without being able to fall asleep, distracted by my thoughts.

My rebellious heart… refused to express itself and thus to submit, fearful perhaps of confiding its happiness to hands so frail.” One day, K received a letter from her father ordering her to return to their province. The good news was that her family would visit a fiesta in Laguna and they could see each other there. A pattern with Rizal makes its first appearance here, which is that when he becomes close to a woman to the point of “intimacy,” he leaves her. On the day of her arrival, Rizal saddled his horse and rode off to meet her. Yet when he saw her, as he wrote: All I did was to take off my hat. I said nothing. The same thing has happened to me at the most trying moments of my life! My tongue so glib at other times, falls silent when my heart overflows with feeling… at critical moments in my life, I have always acted against my heart’s desire, obeying contradictory purposes and powerful doubts. This is how it ends.

Ah, how much truth was once instinct in these words! Ended, my adolescent and confident loves! Ended, at an early hour, my first love! My virgin heart will always mourn the reckless step it took… my illusions will return, yes, but indifferent, uncertain, ready for the first betrayal on the path of love… I realized that she was the woman who satisfied completely the yearnings of my heart, and I told myself that I had lost her. Does it sound mushy enough for a Regal film? One cannot imagine Jose Rizal going through all this, but it’s true. Happy Valentine’s Day. Source: Rizal Without the Overcoat by Ambeth R. FMC-EGM awards scholars It began in 2014 as a bursary dubbed Ako Ang Susunod na Pinoy Inhinyero. The Filipino Members Chapter of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (FMCEGM) awarded its first two bursary recipients (then-student members, now both professional engineers) in December 2014 during the chapter’s year-end party and has since become an annual feature presentation of the event. This past year, 2019, saw a significant increase in the number of recipients from four in 2018 to eight and total amount awarded from $3,000 to $9,000. Aside from the annual fundraising events organized by the chapter, annual financial support from Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, donations and sponsorships from members and supporters, another source of funding came through the Mar Mance Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

Thus, the creation of two categories of scholarships: the FMC-EGM’s scholarship and the newly-established Mar Mance Memorial Scholarship. From 2014 to 2016, selection was through a lottery where names of applicants were randomly drawn during the awarding night. Since 2017, selection has been an evaluation process to recognize applicants’ financial needs, academic performance, as well as to reward applicants’ chapter and community involvement through volunteering and/or participation. The Technical Committee of FMC-EGM anonymously evaluated scholarship applicants following a stringent set of rules and criteria. The recipients of the 2019 FMC scholarships were Melissa Pasahol, Rhyz Joshua Abella, Andrei Joshua Loredo, and Reynaldo Robillos, Jr. Each received $500 in cash and will See FMC-EGM p20

Although spring seems like a great time to pare down as you prepare for spring-cleaning, winter is also a great time to purge your excess. Feng shui experts will tell you that clearing out clutter is a great way to unburden your life and add more energy to your home. But cleaning and clearing is also an important part of making the most of the Lunar New Year, also called Chinese New Year. The Year of the Rat that began last January 25th will bring good luck all year long if you have a sparkling and decluttered home. New Year ready Only a few days have passed and it is still not too late. As part of welcoming the Lunar New Year, many Asian and Chinese prepared their home as they would for an important guest, taking time to do a thorough decluttering of old items, giving their home a deep cleaning, and adding auspicious decorations such as flowers and oranges. If you have not done this yet, you can still do this. Give your home a thorough going-over so as to rid the house of old energy and enjoy the new energy that this New Year brings. Broken equals broke Another important undertaking around the house is to make home maintenance repairs. When there are broken items in the home, the belief is that it can bring down the homeowners’ fortune, even creating financial loss. Taking a quick run through the house to oil a squeaky door or cabinet hinge, touch up scuffed wall paint or repairing faucet drips will help create good energy because your home is in good working order. Clean thoroughly Sweeping, dusting and cleaning are a key part of making the house set for the Lunar New

PILIPINO EXPRESS

Year. In particular, it is vital to have a very clean kitchen. In Chinese custom, the kitchen should be thoroughly cleaned, the pantry purged and restocked, and canisters refilled. New foods, such as nuts, sweets, and fruits are also bought and put out for all to enjoy and to show abundance. Citrus fruits, especially oranges, are set out in large bowls as the fruit symbolizes gold in Chinese tradition. Decorate auspiciously To create a home that welcomes the New Year, often seen as a young boy and a girl, the Chinese believe in adorning their homes with bright red signs written with words of good fortune at doorways, and bringing in flowering plants. Many have acquired small orange trees, and a visit to your local Chinese markets will often find them overflowing with plants and flowers believed to promise good fortune. Flowers such as narcissus are considered especially auspicious as are flowering branches such as peach or pussy willow. Added to your home, they’ll bring a little springtime feeling and brighten up dull winter days. If January New Year got past you and you’d like a re-set, the Lunar New Year is a fun way to get your house purged, cleaned and to enjoy the good luck that the Year of the Rat brings – and who knows? You might just find that fortune and favour are with you in the Year of the Rat. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I’m a single man and have had a nice picture of Marilyn Monroe in the southwest corner of my living room in between two windows but something told me tonight to take it down. I replaced the picture with an album cover from Herb Albert (Whipped Cream and Other Delights) and

was wondering your take on it. I do know the southwest section this year is good for women and prosperity. Is it ok to put 2 red candles there also? Answer: This is a fascinating question, and I am so glad you asked about it. Many people tell me that my reports and newsletter are aimed squarely at women, but I do have a fair number of men who subscribe and who would be interested in this very fascinating question. If you’re searching for a woman and for love in your life, Marilyn Monroe is not an appropriate symbol for a solid, grounded and emotionally stable relationship. She had many torrid affairs, was abused sexually, physically and emotionally. Although highly intelligent, she was a cog in the film, marketing and sex machine, and tragically died from “suicide,” if you believe the reports. Her memory and title were related to her sexuality, not her person. That makes her an objectified woman.

Further, Monroe had difficulty choosing and maintaining love relationships and ultimately perished, some say, because of her affair with President Kennedy. The Kennedy’s were also not known for having stable relationships either, and left a trail of betrayal and scandal in their love lives. As a replacement, the image of the woman on the cover of Herb Alpert’s album Whipped Cream and Other Delights, an incredible album, but whose cover model seems like yet another objectified woman. I say this while loving Herb Alpert, a first generation American born to Jewish immigrant parents from Ukraine and Romania. I would suggest looking for an image of a woman who appears less sexualized. This could stem for a need to connect with a woman, but those images don’t portray the kind of relationship, I believe, you are truly looking for. I say this, as I know the kind of caring, sensitive person you are.

There is nothing wrong with sex, or being interested in it. It’s healthy. But when searching for a soul mate or partner in life, an image of a couple or a woman that seems more grounded and healthy would be a better option to use in the southwest corner. As for the red candles, it would be better to place love objects such as mandarin ducks that represent committed, caring love and long-term partnership. Sun, sand and snow? At the time of writing this article, folks in St. John’s Newfoundland are busy shovelling their way out of their homes. The record snowfall was a sight to see with snowpack taller than people’s house and garage doors! I can see why they needed to declare a state of emergency. By doing so, they were able to call on the Canadian military to come and help. I know, I know, Winnipeggers are used to snow. Nothing will stop us from going to Polo Park in a blizzard! But you have to agree, they got a heck of a lot of snow! It looks like most of the country got snow and a bit of a cold snap in January; temperatures dipping to -40 across the prairies and almost -10 degrees out on the west coast of B.C. (almost unheard of). This was a nice reminder that we live in the Great White North. On the plus side, we know it won’t last forever and let’s see if the groundhogs will see their shadows this month. Closer to home here in B.C., the beginning of the snow and cold snap coincided with the Burgos clan’s return from our trip to Mexico, where we spent seven glorious days in the Riviera Maya. Within the space of one day, we

were in shorts and +30 degree weather and then returned to below zero temps. Not a big deal, as we expected it, but what was a surprise was how the weather affected our commute home. We flew into Vancouver, once there, we needed to take a ferry back to Vancouver Island. Usually not a big deal, but this time, we were faced with a multitude of ferry cancellations. What did that mean for us tired and tanned folk? We were stuck in Vancouver until the ferries returned to normal operations. Sure, there could be worse places to be stuck other than Vancouver, but when you add expensive hotels and all these fancy stores and outlet malls, our trip just took a turn for the worse. And by worse, I mean we went shopping and spent more money. Ooof! My wallet still hurts by those darn ferry cancellations. Perhaps I will kindly ask BC Ferries to reimburse me for all the goods we bought during our layover in the beautiful coastal city. Imagine that phone call. They will either laugh and hang up, or say some not so kind words and then hang up. Either way, I don’t think I will recoup any of these costs.

As for our first foray into Mexico, I’d say it went very well. We stayed near a small town in between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. The hotel and amenities were exactly as promised. The food was tasty and the pools

were in abundance. This is what paradise looks like! We spent one day out of the resort and visited Isla Cozumel – a picturesque island we ferried to from Playa Del Carmen. We drove along the island’s coastline

and were met by turquoise waters and white sand beaches (probably very similar to what you’d see back home). The snorkelling in the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park left us breathless, literally! We swam See DALE p15

A visit to Talim Island by Kevin Lamoureux, MP Winnipeg North

Over the years I have travelled a dozen or so times to the Philippines and in my travels I have visited various areas of the country. My visits always include a full program of me conducting immigration meetings and workshops, and meeting with dignitaries and community leaders. I always do something new. Something new this time took me to Talim Island, which is located in Laguna de Bay. To access the island you need to take a boat ride and the boats are not large. I travelled by a fishing boat that could be best described as a large canoe with bamboo sticks on either side, powered by a motor. On the way to the island the wind slowed us down, making the waves large and choppy. This doubled the time it would normally take to get to the island but it added a bit more excitement to the trip. While exploring the island it was clear to that the lifestyle was very different. Everyone knows everyone else in this community. It gave me a new meaning of the word cousin and how tight a community of thousands can be. From what I witnessed, everyone had access to shelter and food but material wealth seemed to be a low priority. A majority of the people had very little to show outside of the relationships they had with their respective households. I never did see a jeepney on the island. In fact, I only saw one parked car and I’m not sure where you could even drive it because the roads and walkways are not very wide at all. Having said that, there are two industries that I noted, which are fishing and garments – many homes have sewing machines. I was not surprised to see a fishing industry but the number of sewing machines surprised me. I discovered that many people were using sewing as a source of income for their households. In most part, it is a community that has the basics, including community facilities like a lighted basketball court with a cover to protect the players and others from the sun and rain. It gets dark early but the streets are always busy with people on them until 10:00 p.m. when the curfew for minors takes effect. It was interesting to see the so-called jailhouse, which is not much more than one room. I was told that crime rarely occurs. I also had the opportunity to check out the fish traps, which are relatively close to the island but play a very important role for the island community. I caught my biggest fish ever in Laguna de Bay but, to be fair to my friends who actually catch fish by line and reel, my fish was caught in a net cage and all I had to do was scoop it out with a smaller net – but technically I did catch it. There were about 25 fish in total that swam into the net trap over two days and typically the owners

of the net traps empty their nets early in the morning and bring their catch to markets where they are sold. I would like to thank everyone who helped make my trip and program possible this year, in particular brother Jimmy and brother Sydney who assisted me in being able to meet with brother Eduardo Manalo who is the

Executive Minister of the Iglesia ni Cristo Church. Not only was I able to have a one-on-one talk with brother Eduardo, but he also arranged for me to get a better understanding of the Quezon City compound and administrative services. I was also provided a fascinating tour of Iglesia ni Cristo’s Bulacan compound, which has the world’s largest

indoor arena, an open air sports complex, a garden, and a zoo. I hope to write some future articles dealing with other aspects of my trip such as discussions that I had about further advancing the relationship between Canada and Philippines, as well as topics related to immigration, future airline services, and special projects that I am working

on as the chair of Canada’s parliamentary friendship group between Canada and Philippines. If you have questions about my trip or would like to make a suggestion for a future trip, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me personally at kevin@mpkevin.ca.

“Ilang beses mo na ba siyang inilaglag in public?

Cold remedies: What works, what doesn’t There’s no cure for the common cold. But what about cold remedies that claim to make you feel better faster? Find out what’s effective — and what’s not. Cold remedies are almost as common as the common cold, but are they effective? Nothing can cure a cold, but there are some remedies that might help ease your symptoms and keep you from feeling so miserable. Here’s a look at some common cold remedies and what’s known about them. Cold remedies that work If you catch a cold, you can expect to be sick for one to two weeks. That doesn’t mean you have to be miserable. Besides getting enough rest, these remedies might help you feel better: Stay hydrated. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which can make dehydration worse. Rest. Your body needs to heal. Soothe a sore throat. A saltwater gargle — 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. Children younger than six years are unlikely to be able to gargle properly. You can also try ice chips, sore throat sprays, lozenges or hard candy. Use caution when giving lozenges or hard candy to children because they can choke on them. Don’t give lozenges or hard candy to children younger than six years. Combat stuffiness. Over-thecounter saline nasal drops and sprays can help relieve stuffiness and congestion. In infants, experts recommend putting several saline drops into one nostril, then gently suctioning that nostril with a bulb syringe. To do this, squeeze the bulb; gently place the syringe tip in the nostril about 1/4 to 1/2 inch (about 6 to 12 millimeters) and

slowly release the bulb. Saline nasal sprays may be used in older children. Relieve pain. For children six months or younger, give only acetaminophen. For children older than six months, give either acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Ask your child’s doctor for the correct dose for your child’s age and weight. Adults can take acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or aspirin. Use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers. Though aspirin is approved for use in children older than age 3, children and teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms should never take aspirin. This is because aspirin has been linked to Reye’s syndrome, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition, in such children. Sip warm liquids. A cold remedy used in many cultures, taking in warm liquids, such as chicken soup, tea or warm apple juice, might be soothing and might ease congestion by increasing mucus flow. Add moisture to the air. A cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier can add moisture to your home, which might help loosen congestion. Change the water daily, and clean the unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Try over-the-counter (OTC) cold and cough medications. For adults and children older than age 5, OTC decongestants, antihistamines and pain relievers might offer some symptom relief. However, they won’t prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. Experts agree that these shouldn’t be given to younger children. Overuse and misuse of these medications can cause serious damage. Talk with your child’s doctor before giving any medications. Take medications only as directed. Some cold remedies contain multiple ingredients, such

as a decongestant plus a pain reliever, so read the labels of cold medications you take to make sure you’re not taking too much of any medication. Cold remedies that don’t work The list of ineffective cold remedies is long. Some of the more common ones that don’t work include: Antibiotics. These attack bacteria, but they’re no help against cold viruses. Avoid asking your doctor for antibiotics for a cold or using old antibiotics you have on hand. You won’t get well any faster, and inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the serious and growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Over-the-counter cold and cough medications in young children. OTC cold and cough medications may cause serious and even life-threatening side effects in children. Talk with your child’s doctor before giving any medications. Cold remedies with conflicting evidence In spite of ongoing studies, the scientific jury is still out on some

popular cold remedies, such as vitamin C and Echinacea. Here’s an update on some common alternative remedies: Vitamin C. It appears that for the most part taking vitamin C won’t help the average person prevent colds. However, taking vitamin C before the onset of cold symptoms may shorten the duration of symptoms. Vitamin C may provide benefit for people at high risk of colds due to frequent exposure — for example, children who attend group child care during the winter. Echinacea. Study results on whether Echinacea prevents or shortens colds are mixed. Some studies show no benefit. Others show some reduction in the severity and duration of cold symptoms when taken in the early stages of a cold. Different types of Echinacea used in different studies may have contributed to the differing results. Echinacea seems to be most effective if you take it when you notice cold symptoms and continue it for seven to 10 days. It appears to be safe for healthy adults, but it can interact with

many drugs. Check with your doctor before taking Echinacea or any other supplement. Zinc. There’s been a lot of talk about taking zinc for colds ever since a 1984 study showed that zinc supplements kept people from getting as sick. Since then, research has turned up mixed results about zinc and colds. Some studies show that zinc lozenges or syrup reduce the length of a cold by one day, especially when taken within 24 hours of the first signs and symptoms of a cold. Zinc also has potentially harmful side effects. Talk to your doctor before considering the use of zinc to prevent or reduce the length of colds. Take care of yourself Although usually minor, colds can make you feel miserable. It’s tempting to try the latest remedy, but the best thing you can do is take care of yourself. Rest, drink fluids and keep the air around you moist. Remember to wash your hands frequently. By Mayo Clinic Staff – Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network

Kopecky. Dr. Kopecky says taking an omega-3 supplement plus regular exercise, not smoking, getting sufficient sleep, eating at least five

servings of fruits and vegetables a day and, if you can, eating fatty fish, such as salmon or mackerel, can improve your heart health. “If you can do a little bit over

time, it’s been shown to help tremendously,” says Dr. Kopecky. – By Vivien Williams – Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network

Figuring out fish oil The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug derived from fish oil for some patients with elevated triglyceride levels to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. The drug contains a certain type of omega-3 fatty acid and can be used as an add-on therapy for people on a statin. Does this mean you should take fish oil supplements? Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a Mayo Clinic cardiologist, offers insight. Does fish oil really help reduce your risk of heart disease? “Yes,” says Dr. Kopecky. “You probably ought to eat about

6 ounces of fish three times a week. Almost a pound of fish a week would be the idea. Most people don’t do that.” Fish oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for muscle function, including that of your heart. Omega-3s help reduce the risk of heart attacks, high triglycerides and high blood pressure. Dr. Kopecky says people who have high cholesterol and triglycerides over 200, and people who are vegan or don’t eat fish should consider taking omega-3 supplements. “A pill doesn’t take the place of a healthy lifestyle. It has to be in addition to it,” says Dr.

CRISTY... Winnipeggers aid Pinoys affected by Taal Volcano

Energetic Pinoys danced the Tala for Taal. Max’s Restaurant and local businesses with World Vision hosted fundraiser. There are many ways to aid the victims of Taal Volcano. These are a few of them.

HINAGAP

CHERYL... From page 4 with their friends. 8. Differences are seen as good – There are no two people who are exactly the same. A healthy relationship will acknowledge differences between each person (e.g. one is more logical, and the other is more social, one is more organized, and

the other is more creative) and see how this makes them a better team. Do you want to improve things with your partner? To assess the level of communication and strength in your relationship, a first step is to discuss the above points together. Aim for an open discussion, do not harshly criticize the other, and tell each other that you will not

get upset if you hear something uncomfortable. This requires some humility and patience. The ideal outcome is that afterwards, you will feel a stronger sense of trust, understanding and acceptance – and maybe have a laugh or two in the process. Many of the horses, cattle, poultry and other animals got left behind when the volcano started spewing clouds of ash and shaking the ground. As much as their owners wanted to rescue them, the government locked down most towns, expecting an imminent, stronger eruption of Taal. On January 17, the Batangas Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head, Lito Castro, said there were 14 towns under lockdown with three towns under partial lockdown. These towns include: Agoncillo, Alitagtag, Balete, Cuenca, Laurel, Lemery, Malvar, San Nicolas, Sta Teresita, Taal, Talisay, Tanauan City, parts of Lipa City, and parts of Mataas na kahoy. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLS) reiterates that at Alert Level 4 a hazardous explosive eruption is still possible within hours or days. As of January 22, a total of 725 volcanic earthquakes were plotted in Taal region, of

which 176 were felt, ranging from Magnitude 1.2 to 4.1 and Intensity of I to V. According to news reports, the local as well as national governments, have been handling the situation well. Many private and public groups, associations Philippine-based companies have also helped, delivering muchneeded water, food, clothing and other necessities to the thousands now staying at evacuation centres. Here in Winnipeg, the Filipino-Canadian community is continuing to gather support, to help kababayans affected by the eruption of Taal volcano. From dance mobs and Zumba classes to mini-shows featuring local talents, and breakfast fundraisers, everyone is helping out in many different ways. Others who have families and relatives in the affected areas have sent direct monetary help to them, as well. Jiro Manio

– CSF
