INDUS[TO]RGANICO

Industorganico is the renovation of a historic 1930s grade II listed building of the Bata shoe company now used only as a warehouse.

The building is in the East Tilbury marshland area and will connect the former industrial site with the organic landscape: A dualism of two different places which, with the new proposal, will be combined together and converted into a single sustainable building.

The proposal is designed to support a new centre focused on the exhibition, research, and testing of biomaterials like mycelium, hemp, and algae, with the goal of contributing to the area’s urban regeneration. This effect will lead to new bio houses made of biomaterials for the new industry workers and promote the city towards a new, more sustainable future.

It aims to bring back the town’s sense of community, lost when the Bata industry closed in 2005. It has now become a dystopian place, very far from that when the old industry was still in activity and with a strong sense of desolation.

This will be translated into a manifesto, which will function as a timeline between past, present and future, exploring and testing biomaterials to promote the construction of a new sustainable housing centre.

MYCELIUM

“Hemp Home: Upcycling Furniture

The proposal stems from the first semester fragment that saw the reuse of wood transformed into a public chair.

This project aims to establish a workshop focused on creatively recycling furniture and upholstery fabrics using hemp as a sustainable material.

The use of wood and hemp in the furniture extends to the construction of the building which is a timber frame structure with hemp infill panels.

The workshop will serve as a creative space where individuals and youth in Somers Town can learn, collaborate and engage in eco-friendly practices. By incorporating hemp-based materials and promoting the concept of creative recycling, the project aims to support a more sustainable and circular economy in Somers Town.

Fragments - Timber and Plywood 03

Inspired by Alvar Aalto’s use of plywood, this two-part project consists of an exhibition stand shaped after his iconic Armchair 42—serving as both a display and shop for his works—and a wood workshop that echoes the chair’s flowing curves, creating an engaging space for young students to explore craftsmanship and model-making.

This project explores the intersection of craft, community, and urban space through the creation of a fragmented chair using traditional Japanese timber joinery.

Through material experimentation and thoughtful assembly, the project highlights architecture’s role in activating communal environments and
