OLD SCHOOL WORKOUTS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Let’s get physical! They may look a bit dated, but these workouts from the ‘80s and ‘90s can pack a punch. Even if the

world at large has moved into a focus on weightlifting and higher-impact routines, there’s still a place for rhythmic aerobic exercise, which aims to improve flexibility, muscular strength, and cardiovascular health. More importantly, it’s a lot of fun

(especially when set to your favorite retro tracks)! It’s time to break out the leg warmers and leotards and get moving in the new year to the forgotten workouts of the past.

A BRIEF BACKGROUND The ‘80s brought about a revolution in personal fitness. With a surge in the number of health clubs and commercial

gyms, these establishments were no longer seen as the sole realm of professional athletes and fitness fanatics. Celebrity endorsements and an eye-catching aesthetic further fueled the interests of everyday people in exercise. The biggest

change came from the at-home workout video, however, which came to be the ultimate fitness-based convenience of the ‘80s and beyond.

JANE FONDA WORKOUTS The impact of Jane Fonda’s Workout cannot be overstated. The actress-turned-instructor brought about an increase in women’s exercise programs and established the celebrity-endorsement paradigm that defined ‘80s fitness culture. Moreover, she popularized the iconic leg warmer and coined the phrases “feel the burn” and “no pain, no gain.” Jane Fonda workout videos feature a mix of low-impact aerobics, stretching, and strength-training for full-body fitness.

STEP AEROBICS Step aerobics is a form of aerobic exercise that traces its origins back to 1968. This workout centers around repeatedly stepping on and off a small platform, the height of which can be adjusted depending on the desired difficulty of the user. Step routines are typically set to music with an upbeat tempo, and can vary in complexity based on the instructor’s specified choreography. Step aerobics surged in popularity in the ‘90s following a promotion by Reebok, and is still practiced in fitness centers today.

WELLNESS CORNER JAZZERCISE Another staple of the ‘80s, Jazzercise was created by Judi Sheppard Missett in 1969 after discovering the need for casual, fun dance classes with an emphasis on physical fitness. Though she initially held classes in person, Sheppard Missett moved to a VHS distribution model for at-home use, beginning with her 1981 Jazzercise release. Jazzercise is a combination of dance, martial arts, and strength training, providing a full-body workout with plenty of cardiovascular benefits.

RICHARD SIMMONS WORKOUTS Along with Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons was one of the standouts of home video fitness personalities. Following his television series The Richard Simmons Show, he released the Sweatin’ to the Oldies line of aerobic videos, which became landmarks of the decade. Simmons’ workouts feature dynamic stretching and simple dance choreography set to an hour of live popular music from the ‘50s and ‘60s. His characteristic enthusiasm provides a fun, motivating backdrop to his high-energy routines.

Though these workouts may be met with a dose of modern skepticism, they inspired a generation to exercise and have

fun doing it in the comfort of their own homes. The key to staying active is finding something enjoyable that you can do

regularly. If that something involves rhythmic dancing, stepping, and stretching, don’t let the tides of modernity hold you back! No matter how you choose to go about it, there is always value in increasing your fitness, strength, stamina, and overall health, regardless of the exercise trends of the current decade. WANDER FAR OR STAY CLOSE: MAKING THE MOST OF SPRING BREAK

Spring Break is just around the corner and offers a perfect opportunity to pause, recharge, and create lasting memories

with your loved ones. Whether you’re dreaming of an exciting getaway or planning to savor the comforts of home, there are countless ways to make this time special. From stress-free travel tips to creative staycation ideas, we’ve got you covered with practical advice to help you maximize every moment.

TOP TIPS FOR STRESS-FREE TRAVEL For those planning to travel this Spring Break, here are some top tips for a stress-free trip: • Plan Ahead: There’s nothing more stressful than last minute plans. Be kind to future you and plan ahead as much as

possible! Not only will this help with costs by finding early-bird deals & discounts, but it’ll also save you time and energy that you’ll want to reserve for vacation.

• Family Planning: Getting the whole family involved in planning ensures you create a trip that feels inclusive and exciting for all. This not only helps you plan ahead, but it can also help reduce tensions and make for a smoother trip.

• Be Flexible: Travel, with multiple people and especially with children, can be tough. From flight delays to unexpected

weather, even the best laid plans can go awry. Be sure to manage your expectations so you can be flexible when plans shift. • Know Your Family’s Travel Style: Are you a family of whirlwind explorers, professional relaxers, or maybe somewhere

in-between? Understanding how your family prefers to travel and what they want out of a trip can ensure a balanced adventure that leaves all parties fulfilled.

• Schedule Downtime: It can be tempting to cram your schedule from dawn till dusk to make the most of your trip. Breaks never feel like enough time, especially when travel is a factor, but don’t overpack your schedule. You shouldn’t need a vacation from your vacation – give yourself time to relax and enjoy so you can recharge!

MEMORABLE STAYCATION IDEAS You don’t have to cross state lines or international borders

to enjoy Spring Break, here are a few ideas for creating local memories:

• Explore Day Camps: While most day and weeklong camps occur over summer break, there are often many great options to keep kids engaged and entertained over Spring Break too. If your kids have specific interests, a camp can be a great way for them to learn and explore without feeling like they’re back at school. This is a great option for parents or guardians who cannot take time off for Spring Break. • Get Outdoors: Spring break can be a perfect time to explore nature near you - be it a park, nature walks, or even just hanging out around your neighborhood. Getting outside is a great way to disconnect from work and school and reconnect with your loved ones. Plus, just a little outside time has been shown to improve both mental and physical health. • Connect with Friends & Family: It takes a village so share the load! If you know of friends and families who have the same Spring Break schedule, offer to combine your efforts and make great memories via caretaker sharing. Try hosting themed days such as movie, spa, or game days. Kids can rotate between locations on a schedule that works for everyone! • Discover Local Events: Many places have Spring Festivals or local events that you might not be aware of. Check out what your local neighborhood, city, or town is up to – you might be surprised! • Try a Weekend Getaway: A change of scenery is always a great way to go – even if it’s not very far. Try taking a long weekend and explore somewhere near you! Even a short day trip can get the family out of the house and make Spring Break special.

No matter where you spend Spring Break, the goal is the

same: quality time with family and a chance to refresh before the busy months ahead. With a little planning, flexibility, and

creativity, you can turn this short break into an unforgettable experience. So, pack your bags or prep your backyard, and welcome the season with joy, relaxation, and connection. Written by Rachael Davis 11
