As we move into this new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on both our challenges and achievements as a medical community here in Pierce County.
In particular, I want to thank those who have been able to participate in the Pierce County Health Care Access meetings and encourage our Pierce County physicians to consider attending.
Our medical community works better when we join together, and PCMS strives to be a source of support for our members. PCMS is dedicated to working with our health care community partners to provide the highest-quality medical care to our patients. Access to care is the first step.
We also want to continue to focus on community collaboration and advocacy. PCMS members have continued to participate in mentoring and educational opportunities through the Tacoma Public Schools Health Careers Academy. All medical specialties are of interest to the students, and we would like to connect with any PCMS members who are interested in learning more about how they can participate in this program, which helps inspire young people in our community to enter all levels of the medical field.
As we look ahead to the next quarter, I encourage each of you to stay involved whether by attending one of the Pierce County Health Care Access meetings, participating in health care career mentorship, or joining our community health projects. Your engagement makes a real difference. Together, we can continue to promote not only the health of our patients, but also the well-being of those who dedicate their lives to caring for them.
Sincerely,
Blair Campbell, MD President

Standing Up for Evidence-based Medicine
The March/April 2026 issue of WSMA Reports explores the controversies engendered by Sec. Kennedy’s Department of Health and Human Services, particularly with vaccine policy, and the work being done to empower physicians as trusted messengers in an era of health misinformation and declining trust in science.
To protect patient safety and to uphold practice standards, physicians are pushing back hard on the federal government’s attack on vaccines and preventive care. For the March-April WSMA Reports feature story, writer John Gallagher talks with Washington physician leaders on the rapidly evolving state-of-play of immunization policy and guidance that’s creating tension between federal health agencies and the physician community and creating confusion for our patients.
With the assault on evidence-based information underway, physicians and clinicians can use all the help they can get to combat misinformation and disinformation. For our secondary feature, writer Rita Colorito spoke with Helen Burstin, MD, MPH, MACP, to learn how the Coalition for Trust in Health and Science is creating and using an evidence-based knowledge infrastructure to promote trust in health and science and challenge false information.
Chaos and confusion in federal vaccine policy is contributing vaccine hesitancy and nonadherence on the ground For our risk-management column, experts at Physicians Insurance explain why it’s vital that a patient’s decision to decline recommended immunizations is carefully documented and offer documentation guidance.

In Memoriam
Maureen Ann Callaghan, 73, passed away unexpectedly, surrounded by her family in Olympia, Washington on February 6th, 2026. She was a tenacious woman who touched many in her too short but full life. Maureen dedicated her life's work to medicine, working as a neurologist and palliative care doctor for 40 years in Olympia, Joint Base Lewis-McCord, and University Place. She was a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother and is survived by her children Brendan (Kristina), Patrick (Maile), and Brigit (Taylor), her siblings Peggy (John) and Kevin, her grandchildren Cora and Evie, and former spouse Allen Miller
Her soul was as vibrant as her wardrobe, as she filled any space with colorful stories and her gift of gab. As a woman who loved traveling and the outdoors, she has sewn connections across the world and has left an example of what it means to seize the day.
