A message from your

Director

As summer ‘18 comes to a close and another school year begins, we at PRD are excited to offer a wide range of Fall programs to our community. We continue to work closely with Piedmont Middle School to provide diverse enrichment opportunities including interscholastic athletics, recreational sports, debate, arts and healthy relationships programming. Mid-day and afternoon enrichment activities for preschool aged children have also been expanded and the Piedmont Community Pool will again offer a swim lessons through mid-November.

Much of the past year has been spent reconfiguring Schoolmates in response to the full-day Kindergarten schedule. As I write, we are in the process of interviewing and hiring our new team and we are excited for the future of this beloved and valued program. We will hold open houses at all three Schoolmates’ sites on Monday, August 13 from 1:30-6:00pm where you can meet the staff, pick up forms, check out what’s new, and get all your extended care questions answered. The Harvest Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Sunday, September 30. Don’t miss this unique Piedmont tradition including homegrown edibles, scarecrows, carnival games, music, art, and the ever-popular Cake Walk. And of course, to get us all ready for Halloween, the Piedmont Community Pool will host its annual pool Pumpkin Patch on October 20 and the Piedmont Recreation Department building will once again transform itself in to the Haunted House for three spooky nights: October 24, 25, 26.

Opening the Lines of Communication: Talking to Pre-Teens/Teens About Sex

NEW

Contrary to popular belief, talking to kids about sex and sexuality does not pierce their innocence or encourage them to have sex. If anything, studies show that parents engaging their kids in age-appropriate conversations about sex results in later sexual debuts and less indulgence in risky behavior. In this talk for Piedmont parents, we address the barriers that prevent parents from engaging in conversations with their kids about sex and how to move past those barriers. Parents leave this talk with strategies, language, and tools they can use to open the lines of communication about sex, relationships, consent, sexuality—and keep them open. Parents also learn about a new program called Healthy Friendships / Healthy Relationships below. Piedmont Community Hall Thursday, September 20 • 7:30pm

GRADE CO-ED

The start of middle school can be a tender time filled with changes. The capacity to think more critically deepens. Emotions can be confusing and difficult to name. Friendships form, grow stronger, or fade away. Students may wonder “Who am I?” and “How do others see me?” We will begin the work of unpacking identity and laying the groundwork for developing greater awareness of self, surroundings, and others. Together, we’ll explore how to cultivate resilience, empathy, courage, boundaries, compassion, and the ability to advocate for self and others. 801 Magnolia East Wing 184152 Su

8TH GRADE CO-ED Though many students don’t start dating in middle school—or high school—they may have questions about dating, relationships, and the changing (and sometimes hurtful) nature of friendships. Whether they’re aware of it or not, they’re also in the midst of forming ideas and belief systems about how to handle conflict, assert/respect boundaries, and navigate strong feelings. Using values clarification exercises, role-playing, and more, this series will help students build resilience and muscle memory, so that they can communicate more effectively in their friendships and relationships and make decisions based on personal values. 801 Magnolia East Wing 184155 W

9TH GRADE CO-ED Healthy friendships and relationships share common ground. Both require honest communication, boundaries, attentiveness to social cues, consent, consideration, reciprocity, and an awareness of what feels good—and what doesn’t. Students will practice asserting/respecting boundaries, identifying forms of harassment, and assessing/navigating various social situations through role-playing and interactive exercises. They will be encouraged to identify the markers of healthy/unhealthy dynamics, so that they can see how friendships and relationships don’t need to be a matter of “surviving” or “enduring”. Rather, they can offer opportunities for students to thrive and bring out the best in one another. 801 Magnolia East Wing 184156 Su

Chibi Judo - Pre-Judo

Hajime! Beginning Judo

Chibi (little) Judo helps us grow! As we jump, run, and roll we develop balance, coordination and confidence. We learn simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We learn games, songs and the language of Japan. And, at Hanabi, we learn that respect comes as naturally as smiling.

Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running activities warm us up before we practice our “ukemi” or falling techniques. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws – where our opponent can be flipped upside down – on Sensei. We sing in Japanese about inspiration, bow to each other respectfully and say “arigatoh,” thank you.
