New restaurants and bars landing in the Lake Norman area in 2026
By Ryan Pitkin
In our last issue, we highlighted the opening of The Serve Pickleball + Kitchen near Lake Norman in Cornelius. The 65,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor sports and entertainment complex was launched by co-CEOs Robin and Jack Salzman in October 2025.
But a new year brings new openings, so in this issue we’ll take a look at a slate of restaurants, bakeries and bars that are coming soon to the Lake Norman area so you know what to look for once you dock your boat — or on those rainy days when the water just isn’t looking that inviting.
THE VIEW LKN
155 Pinnacle Lane, Mooresville theviewlkn.com
Perhaps the most anticipated opening for boaters, as it’s the only lakefront establishment on our list, The View LKN is also the most mysterious. The beer garden and sports lounge is set to replace Apps & Taps, located between the Blue Parrot Grill and River City Marina off Highway 150, and that’s about all we know for sure.
Boasting waterfront dining and live entertainment, the site’s description promises craft beers, cocktails and unmatched views.
The owners of Apps & Taps announced their decision to sell the lakeside music venue in September 2024. After closing the following month, renovations have taken longer than originally planned, so it’s unclear what the timeline will be for opening the new establishment.
We hope to see them rocking on the water before the end of the year.
Charlotte-area restaurateur Jim Noble will bring two of his established food businesses to Sadler Square shopping center in Davidson in the summer. Set to open in June 2026, the two eateries will play nicely off one another as neighbors.
Originally opened in 1992, Rooster’s Wood-fired Kitchen has locations in Uptown Charlotte, SouthPark and Ballantyne. The menus at each location rotate daily, so there’s always something new to try, but the staples that you can find any time at any of the locations include the classic rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese, and Chef Noble’s coconut cake.
For dessert, head right next door to Copain Bakery & Provisions, billed as the premier Boulangerie-style bread bakery, pâtisserie, brasserie and market in the Southeast. Copain also serves sandwiches, salads and breakfast.
CHILI WILLI’S
9615 Bailey Road, Cornelius
Moving south to Cornelius, Chili Willi’s is set to bring revived Tex-Mex flavors to the former Waterman space this year. It’s led by Rob Duckworth of Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse in Charlotte alongside Ron Smith, who launched this concept in West Virginia in the 1980s but shut it down in 2011.
A West Virginia native, Duckworth said he was once a fan or Chili Willi’s and looks forward to reviving the concept.
The restaurant will feature classic dishes like enchiladas, burritos and flautas in a colorful, refreshed space.
LITTLE MAMA’S
9623 Bailey Road, Suite 100, Cornelius
The invasion of Charlotte restaurateurs into northern Mecklenburg County continues as Mama Ricotta’s founder Frank Scibelli brings his Little Mama’s concept to the Village at Oakhurst. The menu will focus on scratch-made pastas, fresh mozzarella, brick-oven pizzas and fan-favorite dishes.
“Little Mama’s is inspired by the old homestyle Italian restaurants in New England from the ’60s and ’70s,” reads the website. “Really well done classics, without pretense. A stiff cocktail and a proper bowl of fresh pasta or a knob of just-made mozzarella are the simple but elegant meals that keep us in business.”

Talley’s Pier 77 Marine Marks 40 Years of Service and Schooling
Regal Boats partnership has contributed to the success of the family-owned business
By Ryan Pitkin
As an outdoors enthusiast with a passion for boating and any number of other hobbies, Billy Talley knows there’s one consistent killjoy that can turn someone away from a newfound passion or pastime.
“I’ve come to realize that you stop enjoying a hobby or you stop participating in a hobby or activity when it becomes too difficult or too complex to enjoy,” Talley says.
That’s why the team at Talley’s Pier 77 Marine in Cornelius makes it their priority to ensure that a new boater knows everything they need to know to have a good, relaxing experience on the water.
“We don’t just hand you the keys and send you on your way,” Talley insists. “We teach you how to use your boat, everything on it, from the navigation center to the anchor, to docking it, to trailering it correctly You’re learning the same process that my team uses.”
Last year, Talley’s gave this style of training a name — the Confident Captain program — but it’s been the way the team there has operated for four decades, as this year they mark 40 years in business. As a customerfocused company, the family-owned-andoperated business has found success on the back of its outstanding customer service.
Just 41 years old himself, Billy Talley has never known anything but the Talley’s life, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
His father, Bill Talley, launched Talley’s Pier 77 Marine in 1986 after having previously opened an auto mechanic shop. The motto there was “We Do It Right Or We Won’t Do It At All,” and the sign still hangs in Talley’s today.
That attitude is the driving force behind everything Talley’s does, and a big reason why, for more than half of the time that they’ve been in business, Talley’s has been trusted as the exclusive authorized dealer for Regal Boats throughout much of North Carolina and into South Carolina.
They took on that role in 2002, and while there may be bigger boat dealerships in the area, the fact that Talley’s now works exclusively with Regal means they have reserved their entire inventory for that one allAmerican manufacturer.
“We’re not just cherry picking what’s the best for this market and only stock that,” Talley said. “We stick our necks out a little bit. We bring some things in that are risky for the market, but we want to show our customers the depth and the scale that Regal builds.”
That includes sport boats, surf boats, outboard-powered sport boats, express cruisers and yachts. There’s the famed 38 Surf, billed as the largest surf boat in the world, and 36/38/42 Grande Coupes, the definition of luxury on the water.
These are all part of the renowned Ultimate Trim Series, available at Talley’s, offering boaters nearly 1 million ways to customize their ride, beginning with a selection of 41 of the finest boats Regal has ever built.
The Ultimate Trim Series offers customizable everything — interiors, towers, audio brands, you name it — giving a new meaning to the acronym BYOB: Build Your Own Boat.
“The Ultimate Trim Series gives us the ability to have some revolutionary technology on the boat, all-custom interior, and just a really high-end luxury experience,” Talley said. “It is really what the ultimate package delivers.”
When we spoke to Talley, he was gearing up for the Mid-Atlantic Boat Show in Charlotte, one of the biggest shows of the season on his company’s home turf.
Talley’s can always be found front and center on the convention floor with a team full of folks ready to give attendees a taste of the service that has seen the company earn consecutive No. 1 rankings worldwide for customer satisfaction among all Regal dealers.
“We go all out at the boat show because, honestly, it’s our chance to shine, to win,”
Talley said. “Some of our competitors do have larger dealerships, but our mindset is you do not have to be the biggest to be the best. We make up for our size with the experience that we deliver — that’s really our focus.”
And Talley should know. Having been born just a year or so before the business itself, he’s grown up alongside it and taken many of his most important life lessons from that experience.
He has spent time working in every imaginable position within Talley’s — detailer, technician, accountant, running the service department, working the parts counter, delivering yachts, building the website, etc. — but the crux of what he’s learned has come from watching his father run the family-owned business.
“I enjoy every aspect of the business and it’s been an absolute blessing,” he said. “My dad’s got very high standards when it comes to his expectations of people. I think that is something that has definitely come through to me. I expect everybody to give it their all, to give it their best in everything that they do. If you’re going to do it, do it to the best ability you know how. That’s our expectation. I get that from dad.”
With that state of mind, Talley’s appears to be ready to sail — or perhaps we should say apply full throttle — into another 40 years.
With the company’s official birthday set to land in August, stay tuned to talleyspier77.com for updates on how the company plans to celebrate with its family of customers this summer.

Lake Lure Prepares for Anticipated Spring Reopening Dam resealing project staying on schedule
By Ryan Pitkin
While the remnants of Hurricane Helene are barely visible along the shores of the Piedmont lakes, some of our western neighbors are still living with the impacts of the 2024 storm every day.
That couldn’t be more true than in Lake Lure, where more than 22 inches of rain fell across the Lake Lure Dam watershed, leading to catastrophic damage to the town and surrounding areas. The lake itself is still in the recovery process, but there’s hope on the horizon.
In September 2025, the Town of Lake Lure announced its anticipated timeline for the full restoration and reopening of Lake Lure, aiming to open the boating season on the lake on May 1, 2026.
As of the time of this writing in late January, things appear to be on schedule, though the reopening could potentially take place later in May than originally anticipated.
A TIMELINE OF EVENTS
The announcement of Lake Lure’s reopening goal came on Sept. 9, 2025, nearly a full year after Hurricane Helene brought devastation to the lake and surrounding town on Sept. 27, 2024.
In the fall of 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) completed their work restoring the lake basin and related shoreline. The pivotal milestone represented the completion of a massive engineering and environmental recovery effort.
“The Town of Lake Lure is forever grateful to FEMA, the USACE, AshBritt, and the many local contractors and crew members who made this progress possible,” said Mayor Carol Pritchett at the time. “We could never have addressed the scale of destruction from Hurricane Helene without their remarkable support, expertise, and compassion.”
From there, the town set its eyes on the next phase of recovery: refilling the lake and reopening it to the public. With the lake at 22.5 feet below “full pond,” which is the level at which the lake is just below the spillway, the town set a goal to have it at 12 feet below by March 1 and up to full pond by May for reopening.
As of Jan. 23, as reported in the most recent update from the Town of Lake Lure before Piedmont Lakes Pilot went to print, the lake was at 15 feet below full pond, though officials were planning to lower it about 2 more feet in anticipation of winter weather forecasted for the coming weekend.
The reason for maintaining the lake at its current low level is to allow for the ongoing work taking place on a critical project to replace the seals on the Tainter gates of the Lake Lure Dam. That project is going well and on schedule, with an expectation that it will be completed in February 2026.
Filling the lake to 12 feet below full pond by March 1 will allow regional and collegiate rowing teams to return for spring training.
“What an amazing way to re-establish the lake for these remarkable athletes who have been utilizing Lake Lure since it was originally opened in 1927,” read a release from the town.
THE WORK CONTINUES
Other plans the town has undertaken as part of the second phase of recovery include rebuilding the docks at the Washburn Marina, establishing a temporary town hall and police station at The Landings while a permanent plan is developed, removing the former Welcome Center building, installing a new playground at Morse Park and reestablishing the water lines at the Lake Lure Beach Building.
Town officials continue to work to finalize the contract for shoreline debris
removal through the NC State Mission Assigned Recovery Task (SMART) program. Town crews will also make rounds to assist with debris removal after the lake is back at full pond as they have in the past.
“Reopening Lake Lure will be more than a return to normal — it will be a symbol of resilience, unity, and the incredible power of partnership,” said Mayor Pritchett. “This achievement will help drive the full recovery of Lake Lure and the greater Hickory Nut Gorge region.”
As of the most recent update, the Town of Lake Lure hopes to fully reopen Lake Lure for the season sometime in May 2026. The date is uncertain at the time of this writing. Visit townoflakelure. com for updates as new information becomes available.

NC Bassmaster High School & Junior Series Returns in March
By Ryan Pitkin
For many young fishing enthusiasts around North Carolina, the nearing of spring means the return of competitive fishing with the NC Bassmaster High School & Junior Series, which is set to kick off a new season in March.
The volunteer-led youth organization hosts high school (grades 8-12) and junior series bass tournaments at various lakes and rivers across the state and has seen amazing growth over the last five years, according to tournament director Chris Corriher.
“It’s been very rewarding just to see the growth of the individual anglers and their teams,” Corriher told Piedmont Lakes Pilot. “When we started we had around 30 to 40 boats participating and now our high is 115 boats and that’s due mainly to word of mouth and the organizers of some of our teams just promoting the sport in their school or their area and growing it.”
The tournament welcomes boys and girls who are members of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) to compete in teams of two with an adult captain guiding the boat. Participants go out for about an eight-hour day, 7 a.m.-3 p.m., and return to weigh in their five biggest catches of the day.
While in the past the tournaments were broken up into West Series and East Series, the growth of the events has spurred the separation into three series this year: Mountain, Piedmont and East.
Outside of Piedmont Lakes Pilot’s coverage area, the Mountain Series features tournaments on Fontana Lake, Lake James, Hiwasee Lake, and Lake Chatuge, while the East Series includes tournaments scheduled for Chowan River, Lake Gaston, and Lake Mayo.
Teams who participate in two tournaments are invited to the North Carolina State Championships at Mountain Island lake in May, where a top-two finishing spot will qualify them for the BASS Nation National Championships. A top two spot in the High School & Junior Series points race also usually lands a team in the nationals.
For Corriher, however, the real reward during these tournaments is in watching young people cultivate a passion for fishing.
Many competitors go on to receive scholarships for fishing with the Catawba Valley Community College’s nationally ranked bass fishing program or at other schools such as Bethel University in Tennessee.
“It’s neat to see, because then they come back and kick my butt in these adult tournaments,” said Corriher, laughing.
Online registration has ended for the upcoming NC Bassmaster High School & Junior Series tournaments, but registration is allowed at the ramp on the day of. Visit nchighschoolfishing.com for more information. Discounted BASS memberships for students are available online at bassmaster.com.

How to Clean a Fish
Step 1. Rinse any remaining slime and dirt off of the fish, and lay it on a cutting surface. Insert a knife in the hole on the underside of the fish. Cut upward along the belly to the head. Tips: Keep the knife blade shallow so you don’t puncture their intestines.. Use a small towel to get a secure grip on the fish while you clean it.
Step 2. Make a cut at the throat to separate the gills from the head.
Step 3. Spread the body open to remove the gills and entrails.
Step 4. Fish have a kidney along the lenght of the backbone. Scrape this out with a spoon or your thumbnail.
Step 5. Cut off the head if you desire, and remove the dorsal fin. Rinse the fish in cold, clean water and keep the fish cool until you are ready to prepare it.
