REGGIO INQUIRY LEARNING AT PICKERING COLLEGE At Pickering College, we provide a nurturing, supportive and enriching learning environment for all students. We develop and educate the whole child through a focus on academic excellence, co-curricular distinction, character and leadership development, and by providing an individualized approach to student learning. We know our students and ensure that they are supported and encouraged to meet their individual needs and accomplish their dreams. Our programs build on the special strengths of our community: the personal and individual attention we provide our students; the safe and supportive environment; the diverse cultures and experiences within our community. The role of Quakerism at Pickering College is a unique and defining aspect of our school. Retaining a close relationship with our Quaker heritage provides a philosophical, moral and operational framework for our planning and decision-making. The Foundation Years – The Junior School Global Leadership Program The Foundation Years Program sets the foundations of Global Leadership through cumulative challenges and interdisciplinary projects organized around eight building blocks: Leadership, Global Awareness, Design and Build, Public Speaking, Technology Integration, Environmental Stewardship, Outdoor Education, and Literacy and Languages. The program’s culmination is “My Key Idea,” a public speech where the student advocates on a topic of personal significance.
Reggio is an innovative and inspiring approach which values the child as capable, competent, creative, confident, resilient, and full of potential. We believe that children are rich with curiosity and knowledge. It is a child’s innate desire to observe, explore and investigate. Inquiry motivates, experiences actualize the learning. “Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through active reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning how to learn.” –Loris Malaguzzi In our JK to Grade 2 classrooms, we have begun to enrich, in depth and breadth, our Pickering College roots, programs and teaching with a Reggio Inquiry Approach. The Reggio Emilia Approach originated in Italy. At the core of this educational philosophy was the founder Loris Malaguzzi, who was an influential leader in education. It is a democratic model that follows the development of children, and brings together the children, teachers, and the environment.
As you will notice, each classroom is aesthetically beautiful, filled with natural materials that invite questions and provoke curiosity and discoveries. The environment promotes a sense of belonging and being at one with nature. Careful attention to detail and designing spaces that optimize discovery and learning have been created. The classrooms are filled with photographs, documentation of the learning, childrens’ work, journals and artifacts that are an integral part of the children’s experiences.

The Big Ideas and the guided and emergent lines of Inquiry drive the experiences. Through a Reggio lens, the units of study are unfolded, and learning is deepened. “Creativity seems to emerge from multiple experiences, coupled with a well-supported development of personal resources, including a sense of freedom to venture beyond the known.” –Loris Malaguzzi Pickering has found the lens that is a perfect fit with Reggio style inquiry. The teachers listen carefully and observe the children, recording their words, thoughts and ideas. Reflective dialogue, questions and deeper thinking are part of each day. This way of working drives the process forward and creates a path for the children to deepen their learning.
Community is gathering interconnected individuals whose collective actions create a sense of belonging and encourage participation, who accept and take care of one another.
COMPASSION Compassion is being sensitive to others’ thoughts and feelings and understanding and considering conflicting issues and ideas. It is to show concern and caring for all others in the community, no matter their differences, in a way that creates harmony and peace.
INTEGRITY Integrity is the courage to act honestly and truthfully in all actions.
RESPECT Respect is valuing yourself and others and the environment in which we exist, based on the principles of simplicity and equality, so that you treat others as you wish to be treated.
RESPONSIBILITY Responsibility is being accountable for one’s own actions and behaviours by demonstrating good judgement and fulfilling obligations.
STEWARDSHIP OF THE EARTH We provide the children with meaningful, thoughtful and authentic experiences and opportunities for them to explore, research, investigate, collaborate, reflect and communicate their findings.
