Living Our Values

Gathering in Sisterhood Leads to Meaningful Impact

In Pi Beta Phi, we deeply cherish the values of community and togetherness. From chapter-specific events and traditions to collaboration opportunities with members across North America, there is no replacement for being together with our sisters. After spending the summer months apart and reuniting on campus earlier this fall, there have been an abundance of opportunities to live our values at Washington Beta. Washington Beta members cherish the time we spend with one another; being together on campus is always a special time filled with excitement and gratitude. One of my favorite things during the fall term at Washington State University (WSU) is the excitement around Homecoming Week. The campus is full of spirit,

and we love getting involved together. Another highlight is when all the clubs start up again—there’s so much energy and a chance to meet new people or reconnect with friends. The sense of community and the fun fall events, like bonfires and harvest festivals, make it a special time to be at WSU.

Being together on campus not only allows us to foster genuine connection and Sincere Friendship, but also provides the opportunity for community engagement. As Pi Phis, we embrace our mission to enrich lives through community service. Giving back is at the core of who we are, and Washington Beta is dedicated to fulfilling this vision for our sisterhood.

At Washington Beta, there are many opportunities to engage with our community in purposeful ways. The fall term is especially meaningful, as the holidays provide the perfect opportunity for gratitude, generosity and giving back. As we near the end of the fall term, our chapter is looking forward to our "Lemonade for Literacy" philanthropic event; it’s a great way to raise awareness for Pi Phi’s focus on literacy, and it always feels rewarding to contribute to such an important cause. We also have our yearly joint philanthropic event with another sorority, where we sell baked goods to raise money for Circle of Sisterhood, our campus Panhellenic’s local philanthropy. Both events bring our chapter closer together as we promote Pi Phi’s values of Sincere Friendship and Philanthropic Service to Others.

The Fall 2024 term has been truly fulfilling at Washington Beta, and as Chapter President, I’m honored to keep witnessing Pi Phi’s commitment to bettering the lives of our sisters and community members. Nothing fills our hearts with more Pi Phi Pride than authentically living the values of our sisterhood.

From Legacy To Leader

JENNIFER LAMOTTE GERETY values the deep connections and lasting joy Pi Phi has brought into her life. Read more about her journey from legacy member to dedicated volunteer, her passion for supporting Pi Phi as the AAC Operations Advisor for Colorado Alpha and her commitment to fostering a strong sisterhood across generations.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I have been married for 36 years to my husband and we live in Spokane, Washington. We have three grown children, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren—they are all our joy! I’m an accountant for a large pediatric therapy practice, and I love my job. We enjoy spending time with our family and are die-hard Washington State University Cougars fans.

WHAT DREW YOU TO PI PHI DURING RECRUITMENT?

Both my mother and sister are Pi Phis— my sister was a junior in Washington Beta when I went through recruitment. My mom was also actively involved in the Spokane, Washington, Alumnae Club, so Pi Phi was always familiar to me growing up. I enjoyed primary recruitment—Pi Phi was fun, welcoming and warm, and I already knew some members through my sister. The legacy connection was very special and important to me, making the decision to join Pi Phi an easy one.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ALUMNAE LIFE?

I love the deep connection I have with my New Member class. We are very close, and we treasure that bond, holding reunions whenever possible. This connection is particularly important to me since I left campus

after my junior year, and I’m so grateful I was able to stay connected. Sadly, we have lost three members, which has only brought us closer together. We honor them and keep their memories alive.

The Spokane, Washington, Alumnae Club also allows me to connect with Pi Phis across all generations. Our local club has many Washington Beta alumnae who are well into their 70s, 80s and beyond! Though we have lost several in recent years, hearing their stories and seeing how much Pi Phi has meant to them for so many decades is inspiring.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO VOLUNTEER FOR PI PHI?

In 2011, Washington Beta alumnae were informed that the chapter needed additional support, and I was finally at a place in my life where I could devote time to the chapter and was eager to reconnect with Washington Beta. I spent a lot of time reading and educating myself to get up to speed on

current chapter operations, policies and procedures, as a lot had changed. This reintroduction to Pi Phi brought back all the wonderful memories, as well as the deep love and respect I have for Washington Beta. I joined a dedicated group of AAC members, and we formed special bonds of our own as advisors.

AS A PI PHI VOLUNTEER YOURSELF,

WHY DO YOU THINK VOLUNTEERING FOR OUR SISTERHOOD IS SO IMPORTANT?

A chapter is a carefully constructed organization with many moving parts, and the members need and appreciate the support. Campus culture has changed significantly over the past couple of decades, and the fraternity/sorority life system faces unique challenges today. Chapters cannot operate without strong alumnae support. When collegians and advisors work together toward a common goal, it creates not only an essential and important partnership but also a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
