The Salvation Army Dandenong hub ANTARCTICA ARCHITECTS worked on the Dandenong hub for The Salvation Army, the project aims to colocate the existing services and Corps in the area into a single multi-use building. The co-location will allow the corps to deliver the highest level of community service while providing a flexible space for the local members to gather and hold events. The project includes a multitude of spaces connected by an internal street; this deep internal atrium runs the length of the building connecting the varied services that sit within the larger building volume. This space is conceived as an internal street and is light and spacious with loose elements to break up the area and create zones for socialising, waiting, rest and reflection. The design has deliberately moved away from the well known quality of institutional waiting areas to provide a seamless transition from the entrance of the Worship Hall to the social services that occupy the rear portion of the building. The urban quality of this space further amplifies the experience of this building as a peice of the city, an urban quarter set around a central courtyard. The shield provides the protection and solace for those within. The projects delivery has completed the tender documentation phase.

Kerang hub (Sir Gorton library extended pavilion) Sir John Gordon Pavilion is designed as a new community centre and library in Kerang. The project follows on from 2 master plans in the area and is strategically located as a building to connect several council facilities including the library, the pool and the memorial hall. The building is conceived as an elongated veranda with a series of flexible operable pavilions inserted under the roof. Housed under the roof is a flexible hall which can be operate as either a closed space or a veranda space, a divisible meeting room to address the lack of DDA accessible meeting spaces in town with attached storage and kitchenette. The new facility also houses a new indoor warm water pool to replace the standalone facility in town with a connected exercise room. The new pool acts as either a standalone pool or can connected to the existing outdoor pool to the north of the building. The building is design with the pool as an option with the option for a large veranda space instead of the pool. The form of the building also allow the building to act as a sign or entry point to the town from the Murray Valley Highway. The building also acts as a rest stop and at times a visitor information centre. The building is design to share facilities with the neighboring library. 18 :

The Department of Environment Land Water and Planning in partnership with the Office of the Victorian Government Architect (Client) to develop the Future Homes project. This Competition is intended to help encourage increased housing diversity, through the creation of apartments that demonstrate the replicability, costeffectivity , sustainability and liveability.

Future housing

#PRACT I C E#A NTA RC #V I S UA LI S AT I O N# 2 02 0

In this proposal, the subdivision and almalgamation of land is seen fundamental to the approach to suburban housing. There are two different approaches base on different amalgamations, aiming to describle the advantage and limitation of each: a single lot model and triple lot model The first model has 6 dwellings on a single lot; requires no amalgamation. This is shown repeated in the 2 site amalgamated model, with shared vehicle access. It includes four 3 bedroom walk up dwellings and two ground floor dwellings - a one bedroom and a two bedroom. An external lift can be retrofitted to upper levels. The second model takes the efficiencies of amalgamating three sites and proposes 20 dwellings over three levels- each accessed by lift, with a shared central courtyard. It contains 12 three bedroom dwellings, 4 one bedroom, and four two bedroom dwellings. Each dwelling is designed to the briefed or regulated minimum, creating maximum impact on built cost and planning envelope – the two key barriers to improving density. We acknowledge the DIY quality of suburban housing and its role in customising and adapting over time. The approach is an extremely simple armature with capacity to convert or adapt dwellings, an unrestricted palette of finishes, and informal garden spaces for communal development. This includes future relaxing of certain planning requirements.

Một thành phố sáng tạo ...

A city of creation ...

“...Thành phố có hai loại, là một nơi mà bạn có thẻ làm mấy việc hàn xì ngay bên lề đường, và một nơi mà bạn không thể..”

“...There are two types of cities : cities where you can weld on the sidewalk and cities where you can’t..”

Produce

William Gibson’s words were quoted during his sharing of views on global revolution with Motherboard. Gibson used the word “cooked” to express his concern about the future of technologyinfluenced developed cities that are becoming too neat and expensive to start up. They then reject visit of young and artistic people – the source of creativity. From a deeper perspective, a city that, once cooked, “becomes like Paris, a city where its business is not much volatile, but also no longer be a welcoming place for innovation” A creative city is a city that makes things. This project is an idea for a city that joins creative enterprise with a place for manufacturing. It joins the new city with the old city; creation with production; ideas with materials; the office tower with the factory and warehouse. It joins the city with logistics networks.

D.R.I.A - City Strata The Chao Phraya River, Bangkok’s river, has always been the bloodline of Bangkokians. For hundreds of years, it has provided all that is required for locals to live and driven the original settlement to prosper into present day Bangkok. However, as the lives are nurtured by the river flow, people have been facing with seasonal flood which is becoming more severe as a result of the city’s increasing weight. This project is to re-envision the Chao Phraya riverfront to mitigate and adapt to flooding and subsidence.

D. R . I . A : 6 1

Bangkok can be interpreted through two systems, vertical and horizontal structure. There are many layers in both dimension with some of them are detached or lack of connection. The design vision aims at finding out system which favors daily life in Bangkok and helps people to overcome threads by flooding. Streets Bangkok are often occupied by parking and srteet vendors. People face lifethreads when flooding due to insufficient evacuation routes.

As Daily life is the main focus, a system with flexibility which allows different kind of activities is suitable for a tourist city like Bangkok. By adding a new layer, new programmes can be introduced to the city. It can also maintain the mobility when flooding comes.

62 :

D. R . I . A

BANGKOK’S TOPOGRAPHY

The city has a fairly plain topographic background. The clay being dried is due to uncontrolled uses of underground water plus the thinkened ground concrete layer City’s development results in the increase of it’s entire weight. Bangkok is still subsiding by centimetres every year

D. R . I . A : 6 3

The proposal is conduct on a site sitting on the edge of the Chao Phraya river which is a combination of a river bank walk, a local market surrounded by residential, a school, and a MRT station. By having the most prominent attributes in a Bangkokians daily lives, the site is to test the possible development of community’s connection and the ability of flood reponse.

The floating hinge and the CITY STRATA above the existing market help introducing people from both riverside and the inner city via market entrance on the street. The strata plays it’s role not only as a connection for mobility, but also as a connection of different activities from riverside to the inner city lives.

SECTION D. R . I . A : 6 9

FLOATING HINGE

Water transportation is one of the most important ways for tourists to move around in Bangkok. Floating hinge are connected to pier which can introduce tourists to the CITY STRATA. A venacular style of architecture is proposed to give a unique impressive to them.

70 :

D. R . I . A

FLOATING HINGE

Community stage is introduced to the residential area. It allows more activities like performances and sports in the community. Also, this kind of strata in the mid level of the building helps connecting the ground floor level to roof top activities. By adding screening in the interface, we can provide pathways for accessibility and at the same time keep the privacy of the residential area.

D. R . I . A : 7 1

COMMUNITY HUB

Tourists pass through the floating hinge to the tourist information centre above the existing local market. That allows tourists to meet with local and enjoy the local life style.

72 :

D. R . I . A

MARKET EXTENSION

The original narrow merket entrance is opended up for CITY STRATA and the market itself to connect better with the street typology aka the inner city lives. The adjacent residential houses are from 20 to 25 metres long. By occupying a part of its’ ground level, a huge setback is introduced with a new screen system. The adjacent residents can still hold vendors at the ground level along with all extended vendors restricted inside the screen. The screen can also hold billboards and adverts which is now a widened market entrance.

D. R . I . A : 7 3

EXTENSION OF SCHOOL / SHELTER

Large rooftop space is one of the common feature of the infrastructure type buildings. That makes it possible to provide extension part for school activities and serves as a emergency shlter when floods comes. It is also important to have easy accessible evacuation point near the canal.

74 :

D. R . I . A

LINKAGE OF TRAaNSPORTATION NODE

Spaces for food stalls and street vendors are placed on the pathways from MRT station to the CITY STRATA. It benefits the daily life to local on the way to school and work. It also maintains the mobility among transportation hub during flooding moments.

D. R . I . A : 7 5

Hospitality BEING TOO CLEAN REDUCES THE IMMUNITY AND CAUSES SICKNESS The project concerns about healthcare delivery models Looking for a breakthrough the prejudice for the medical environment to even improve the effectiveness of the health system The process of finding nature, messy, wild, biodiversity, in the way we use and the way we look at it, avoiding sterilisation

EXPOSITION IS A PREVENTIVE WAY It is the process of creating a new design of clinic which can be expanded as a series of generic building and sit in the middle of public realm.

The project topic concerns about healthcare delivery models in the society and the idea is specifically test in Melbourne community. Healthcare is somehow naturally contradictory We don’t usually visit a clinic, but it should be available whenever we need it. The idea is to answer if we can think diffferently about healthcare, in a variety of senses, from definition to formation, including how to bring an ease to the medical environment. The process is called creating a place of hospitality There has been a very interesting theory in our Western living which is: BEING TOO CLEAN IS MAKING US SICK This has been justified, the fact is that being too clean causes a malfucntion on the immune system, the decreased infections due to hygiene leads to a weak immune system, prone to become easier to cause diseases. That is where the idea is grounded, by looking for a different type of quality of environment to the medical architecture The main interest is to make medicine not to be hospital-like by bringing the nature into the medical environment, seeking the beauty of nature with something wild, messy, dirty, permeable, moist natural ventilated. Instead of isolation, the openess, biodiversity are introduced to the medical terms

The idea is to introduce a building with qualities of old, abandon and iconic. What I have tried to express is to create an architecure as if we didn’t raise it by only ourselves. It is a piece of architecture discovered after a long time hidden by the nature with it’s quality nutured and contributed by nature With the idea of developing a design with Nature Is The DNA, which can sit easily in the public realm, the implemented site is located in Queen Bridge street, South Bank, which is an ordinary 300 metres square as the design scale is expected to be

The process of form will be developed which is inspried by the term “random”. The target is to infuse nature by creating a welcoming random architecture which facilitates the growth of nature in it. Open and ventilated spaces with wild materials are introduced to the quality of the project

THE BLADE OF HARBIN As a part of the design idea’s practice. Another architectural typology is applied to the most recent form to output a new proposed spatial type. “The blade of Harbin” uses the Harbin’s roof to provide cutout for accidential openess. The cutout space can be ideas for open and public spaces. The appearance of these transition areas is a communicative strategy between indoor and outdoor space.

STAGE 2 - ELABORATE

The stage takes the generic form and refines it’s space. By attaching other architectural aspects such as materials and programs, we aims to develop the design to an extent of justifiable level in which the idea can be understood

84 :

H O S P ITA L IT Y

PERSPECTIVE

H O S P ITA L IT Y : 8 5

The random forming process accidentally creates a series of voids inside the building. These kind of spaces is to facilitate the growth of nature and loosen the material gap between inside and outside.

Instead of being a single big footprint, the building looks like a cluster formed by different elements (slab, room boxes, handrails,...) that are chained by the vertical green interface. The fine mix of these materials aims to express the sense of inhabiting with nature.

Brick weave is applied to the building skin to provide the airiness to the indoor spaces and also become the frame for vegetation to grow as a natural cover layer. With corteen, steel, concrete and plants, the building appears more diverse, less scary and sterilised.

The amount of open spaces exist at the ground and grows as it goes higher, like a shape of a tree. Open spaces is used for plants and public uses, it adopts nature around and inside the building.

STAGE 2 - DESIGN FINALISE

The stage re-visit the overall project’s aspects, from architecture to structure, and develop them in detailed . The terms “wild”, “nature” is conveyed more strongly and intensively with consideration of materials and structure components. The engagements of more natural components such as mossy texture, plants, water and animals feature the symbiotic terms of the project’s quality. The Nature is not only added with aethestically purposes, but it means to, architecturally, introduce a new typology - a medical space that doesn’t need to be required isolated. The column system is formed by reinforced concrete and skinned with textured stone tiles for moss and hanging plants to grow. These columns feature soil pots at the top with water drain system inside for big tree to be plants. The brick wall is used together with stripe planters to provide openess to indoor spaces and facilitate the use of plants as natural and translucent partitions. Water ponds exist in each level to adopt aquatic species, introduce a relaxing view to and from the street. The cascade falling down along all levels helps raise the humidity of the buildings which contribute to the consistent growth of plants, balance the temperature of all nearby spaces and create a good source of oxygen for aquatic species to live.

Art school - An old transformed factory The project is a part of the studio’s research project by School of Architecture - Vietnam National University of Civil Engineering, which aims to introduce students to renovation works. Hanoi - the capital of Vietnam - is expanding which leads to the need to relocate factories and industrial zones to the expanded city perimeter. A consequence of these relocations is the industrial buildings that once located on the outskirts of the city are now a part of the inner metropolis. Having a simple and large-span architecture intended to shelfter huge production lines inside, abandoned factory zones are spaces that connot be wasted in the Hanoi’s urban context Old factory buildings are gradually becoming a legacy of developing cities. In the eyes of conservationists, old factories carry great aesthetic value and are a source of inspiration for renovation ideas. Retaining old factory sites is, thus, a part of government plans to create new community spaces with the feeling of legacy embed in it. This project selects an abandoned old factory located in the Southwest of Hanoi to develop the idea of an art school where inspiration is always expected to appear. It is also the ambition that a renovation project desire to convey.

SUPER TIGHT - Thin client “SUPPER TIGHT explored the culture of spatial tightness emerging in Asian cities and its creative potential MORE than HALF the world lives in cities, MORE than HALF the world lives in Asia, MORE than HALF of the world’s megacities are in Asia. Asian cities are therefore key in examining new ways of being densely unbanised SUPER TIGHT describes the small, intense, robust and hyper-condensed spaces that emerge as a by-product of extreme levels of urban density. Tightness is both a consequence of density (but is not density itself) and a series of social, economic and cultural practices that have developed in response to the rapid growth and consolidation of cities” Thin client is a part of SUPER TIGHT studio series which aims to test the posible emergences of architecture in the very limited space frame. We challenge our ability at how we drive architecture in an ordinary but tight living context. The following architecture is proposed in a long and narrow site of 5x52 m. The proposal aims to seek the quality of infill, iconic architecture under unprecedented condition. The final approach is designed for a mix between public and private use with studio boxes, garden, massive stair and stage,...

The project performs under the brief of the M.Arch studio LEARNING FRONTIER as a part of a research and design led exploration of and speculation on alternative model for work/live/learn typologies. The studio is a workshop of generative and typological experiments investigating how contaminations and transformations of diverse typologies can assist in re-imagining formal, spatial and organisational architectural elements for learning environments. The project aims to seek out architectural possibitilies generating experimental propositions and prototypical spatial and formal models for learning environments. Rule-based process experiments will be deployed to assist in manipulating. distorting, amplifying, shattering, dispersing,... the behaviours and qualities of existing types to affect the architectural elements of school typologies.

LEARNING THEATRE - AERIAL PERSPECTIVE

RMIT - URBAN HIGH : 119

#NGV 2021 DESIGN COMPETITION BRIEF The project performs as a submission to the annual comission design competition held by National Gallery of Victoria . Founded in 2015 by the Department of Contemporary Design in partnership with National Gallery of Victoria, the design competition has been seeking to exhibit the leading architectural ideas in the context of NGV garden. As the end of 2020 approached - a tumultous year of bushfires, Black Lives Matters and COVID-19 - It is expected that the NGV commission 2021 will ask or say: What will comes next?

PROJECT BRIEF Since early 2020, we all witnessed the plague on humans and the plague of humans. A million humans lost to one virus; a billion animals lost in fires. Yet we saw fish in clear waters in Venice; the forest of abandoned Pripyat near Chernobyl’s exclusion zone. We propose a tiny tower; small footprint pavilion, or vertical greenhouse for inhabitation by other species. An ephemeral scaffold skinned in polyweave greenhouse fabric, sitting in radiating planting zones; controlling access to the tower. The tower floors contain space for productive flora; nesting space for birds; homes for bees; breeding space for butterflies. Accessible for service only; humans stay under the tower viewing up into the tall vaulted space and receiving the live feed of views from within the nests, hives and crops. For a city full of towers left empty for months, this is an imagining of re-inhabiting; a signal box and breeding gallery. #PRACTICES#ANTARC#VISUALISATION#COMPETITION#2021

Bee Hives:

Greenhouse skin:

On the upper level of the greenhouse there will be a small collection of bee hives. The bee hives sit on a frame within the tower and as the bees collect nectar from the gardens and pollinate the plants, honey can be periodically collected from the hives and provided to visitors of the tower

The scaffold tower is wrapped in a polyweave sheet skin The translucent cover promotes growth providing access to sun light whilst protecting vegetation from cold and windy weather conditions. Walking beneath the tower will be a sensory experience entering the humid environment filled with the scents and sounds of the flora and fauna within.

Hydroponic Plant Farm:

A hydronponic planting system is installed to the tower wrapping around the scaffold. Constructed in a conical configuration on the lower levels the growing system creates a vaulted form which sits above the open entrance plinth.

Bird Nesting:

The central section of the tower is clad with a perforated skin and formed into bird nesting boxes. Among the nearby nesting birds are rainbow lorikeets, spinebills and wattlebirds -the nesting boxes will be developed to attract specific bird species that will suit the nearby plants.

Scaffold Tower + Plinth:

The tower is constructed from a scaffold like system that is supported on an extended plinth base. The structure is open on the lowest level and wrapped in plywood and polyweave skins on the levels above. An access ladder and small platforms allow for maintenance work and this tending to the environment will be a spectacle viewed from within and from outside the tower. An expanse of plants will be propogating on the plinth around the base of the tower creating space around the tower base and intensify the experience of those entering the tower - this will form a buffer for events which will be viewed from the outer layer of the plinth.

Butterfly House:

Butterflies occupy the lower level of the tower. This level is filled with host and nectar plants that provide optimal conditions and butterfly feeding plates will attract and retain the butterflies within this zone. As the insects leave the tower they will pollinate the surrounding gardens.

#MURRAY ST

As a response to the design objectives of Monash Residential Development objectives, The project proposes a three-storey residential building in Murray street, Clayton which optimise the use of surrounding facilities and suits medium and higher densities. Besides accommodating the increasing need for future dwelling, the building also aims to introduce the sustainable living scenarios with multi-configurable ability to encourage future site consolidation when this will facilitate the increase in density development As a part of the project , the below short animation helps to show different sequences with variance of adaptable and configurable living styles.

#HARPLEY ECO SYSTEM

Harpley Eco-system is a cross-disciplinary design research elective where architecture students will work alongside with students from RMIT Art and Public Space. The elective is operated in engagement with construction industry stakeholders Lendlease and the Wadawurrung Traditional Attending the elective, we will create a 200 meters long ribbon artworks to activate highly visible construction hoardings installed at the Harpley development site in Melbourne’s west.

ARTWORK BRIEF - THE REMINISCING We started with the dancing Brolga presentation which, more than just a name, introduced a story of Wadawurrung’s history and the culture founded and raised through thousand years in the Wet land. During the story, I was inspired by the practice of smoke ceremony and the story about Wada-wurrung peope’s totems and beliefs, that then elaborate to their/your culture formation about how people receive the world and life as the nature/creator’s gift and respect them, by treasuring them Harpley is being constructed inside the Wetland imbued with the long and great culture of Wada-wurrung people. My idea is when anyone arrives the site regardless a new visitor of one that is familiar with this culture get to introduced and recalled to the story of living foundation here. What is shown in the artwork is the existence of the creator – Bundjil - with the wings always widely spread - in the pristine world looking forward the historic stream of the originating river (inspiring in my artwork the Werribee river) which contains the soil, water, resources, and life. Underneath is a depiction of the Wetland with an image of smoke ceremony when we celebrate the life, wishing for luck and reminiscing the origin
