PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT RJC9999@ME.COM
The new season is here! For most of us, it’s the beginning of our favorite time of year, highlighted by the end of our annual summer beatdown which ends right around Halloween. We finally made it through another summer and can enjoy all the amazing amenities our club has to offer for a glorious eight months before summer returns. While the kick-off of our new season is celebrated with our Welcome Back Soiree and the Schwab Cup Championship, it’s also a season of gratitude beginning with honoring our veterans and ascending into Thanksgiving, the holidays, and New Year’s Day.
But gratitude can be cursory and abandoned easily. There’s no doubt that there are occasions when I take everything our club has to offer for granted. After all, I’m drawn here to play games and compete against others. But unlike games of chance, the games we play require the mastery of physical and mental skills rather than hurling defiance against the odds. Mentally, our assured intent is to play impeccably, whether it’s being dealt all 13 cards of the same suit in bridge, rolling double sixes in dice, breaking par in golf, or winning straight sets in tennis. When confronted with either a minor setback or a colossal drubbing, our confidence can contort into recklessness, haste, tension, or even anger. It’s a recipe for a personal dumpster fire and far from the grace under pressure we strive to emulate. Ever witness anyone throw a club, flip a table, or break a racquet? Gratitude isn’t remotely present.
In 1920, Bobby Jones wrote “It would seem that if a person has hit a golf ball correctly a thousand times, they should be able to duplicate the performance almost at will, but such is certainly not the case”. Jones is right. When our expectations exceed our capabilities, our dumpster fire moments are precisely when a dose of gratitude is most valuable. Rather than being a mental prisoner of our imperfections, changing our mindsets to gratitude can get us back on the rails. It doesn’t matter if we’re grateful for the beautiful day, or the physical ability to play & compete, or the camaraderie of our fellow competitors. Fighting the game is silly. Surrendering to the river is far easier than trying to steer it. Roll like a river, fall like rain.
Similarly, during a time when our planet is permeated with adversity, negativity, and uncertainty, we have a lot to be grateful for here at our club. By no means is our club impeccable, but like our approach to playing games, the intent is. There are a lot of smart people here who are trying to make it a better place and striving to deliver value to our membership experience. I’m grateful to be a member and I include the club whenever I count my blessings. I’m equally grateful for our member volunteers who serve to improve our club and preserve our vision, traditions, and values. I’m also grateful for all our fantastic members who collectively make this place a fun and vibrant community, conveying a sense of belonging for all. And I’m grateful for our incredible staff who come here each day with the intent to serve our membership impeccably and deliver a world class country club experience. Roll like a river, fall like rain. Now, let’s press the bet!
Happy Thanksgiving, Ronny Castro

Pro’s Tip: While learning to grip the club may seem boring it is crucial to making a good golf swing. Practice lifting the club with your index finger and heal pad of your lead hand. This will make sure that the club is in the proper position to hinge the club properly on the backswing.

PCC Tennis and Pickleball players.
It has been a great start to the season which was kicked off by the Tennis and Pickleball Season opener along with the annual Kelly Michael and Bobby Kelly House party which we are very grateful to them both for hosting. The season is fully underway, and I have not seen the courts this busy in my 8 years here. Both Tennis and Pickleball players have taken full advantage of our wonderful facility.
I would like to welcome Katarina Adamovic to the Coaching staff as a part time Professional. Kat had an amazing College playing career, followed by a professional career on the WTA tour in both singles and Doubles and is now Head Coach of the Ladies team at GCU. If you would like to book a lesson with Kat please text her on 513 417 6302.
More good news on the staffing front is that Sneha Ganan has recently passed her USPTA coaching certification at the Professional level. This is a huge achievement for her and a great bonus for the club so congratulations Sneha.
The Highlight of the last month at the club has to be the Junior Matchplays on Fridays at 4pm which now includes juniors from ACC. On our first Friday of the season we had 16 juniors from PCC and 16 from ACC all playing against each other. This was great to see and great for our juniors to compete against players from another club. We will be hosting ACC the first Friday of every month and they will be hosting us the second Friday of each month. My plan is to include PVCC juniors in January.
Going forward we have the Junior Club Championships on December 3rd, The Ladies Holiday Classic on December 9th and the first Pickleball mixer with the resurfaced courts on January 12th.
January 2023 will bring us 2 new events in the Tennis calendar. January 7th will be the first Member/ Member Doubles tournament. For this tournament there will be an A and a B division. Each Division will consist of Ladies, Men’s and Mixed Doubles teams who will all compete against each other. Please make sure to find a partner and sign up, making this event a huge success. Thank you. Also added to the calendar is Tournament 101 on January 28Th . This will be a Tennis doubles Tournament for members only who have not competed in a tournament or mixer before. I’m expecting all my 101 and 201 groups to join this one and also a few new faces that might not have picked up a racket since high school.
Here is to a great fall and winter and I look forward to seeing you on the court soon.

In honor of Veterans Day:
Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military.
On November 11, 1919, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day, in which he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans:
“
A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities, and gave to the world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and juster set of international relations. The soldiers and people of the European Allies had fought and endured for more than four years to uphold the barrier of civilization against the aggressions of armed force. We ourselves had been in the conflict something more than a year and a half.
With splendid forgetfulness of mere personal concerns, we remodeled our industries, concentrated our financial resources, increased our agricultural output, and assembled a great army, so that at the last our power was a decisive factor in the victory. We were able to bring the vast resources, material and moral, of a great and free people to the assistance of our associates in Europe who had suffered and sacrificed without limit in the cause for which we fought.
Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men. To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.” - WOODROW WILSON
