Editor’s Foreword “England is the most class-ridden country under the sun. It is a land of snobbery and privilege, ruled largely by the old and silly.” George Orwell, The Lion and The Unicorn (1941). Can anybody say that this situation has changed? If the actions and attitudes of the ‘elites’ in recent months haven’t convinced you, then look at what they have just tried to do to the young. If you were born wealthy, chances are that your grades had been estimated upwards even from those that your teachers would have given. Those from the most challenged areas and backgrounds were estimated lower than their teachers would have given. Only the realisation of the scale of upset changed their minds. Could there be a more blatant example of putting the ‘lower’ classes in their place? After last month’s mag somebody pushed a magazine through my door with the words “No nasty politics” written over the article where I warned that we had seen the likes of this government before in history. I disagree – I genuinely believe that we are on the brink of fascism, and that this particular government (not the Conservatives on the whole) are planning to usher it in. It will be made a much easier job for them if we are convinced that the thought should not be discussed. Our entire culture regarding wealth, success, class etc. is not our own. It has been given to us by the elites. It is drip fed to us by the media that they own. Take the term ‘billionaire’, for instance; anyone over the age of 40 will remember that the term was practically unheard when they were a child. Now we use it where we used to describe the wealthy, where we used to use ‘millionaire’. Our brains are not wired to cope with the size of a billion, though. It’s not a case of inflation that’s led to this change in terms. To illustrate, let’s break it down to time. A million seconds is the equivalent of 11 days. A billion seconds is the equivalent of 32 years! Inflation? Have your wages risen by that level of increase!? Even simpler; with no interest or returns on investment, a billion pounds would give you a spending budget of £86,400 per day for 32 years before you run out of cash. If you were Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon, you could extend this for a further 6,048 years! They cleverly use the media to manipulate our lack of awareness of these figures via their ‘philanthropy’. During lockdown, we were told, Jeff Bezos selflessly gave £100 million to American food banks. Worldwide news. “Look how benevolent the billionaires are to us”. $100 million to Jeff Bezos is half a day’s profit. It is the equivalent of somebody giving £50 if they were in what would be considered a fairly well-paid job around these parts. There is no need for anyone to have this much wealth. It’s obscene and they are unaccountable to the rest of us, but have the power to have a huge effect on the world we live in. Between them, they are responsible for more pollution and carbon than entire countries. They are the new gods, and the UK Government worships at their altar. If I had to make a prediction for the near future, I’d say that re-industrialisation of the UK is on the minds of our elites. Not the quality, lifting-us-out-of-poverty type that we like to imagine, but a return to preVictorian values where our lives and time are not even a consideration for the rich, who will continue to congratulate themselves on the ‘opportunities’ that their greed affords us. All of their political moves are about freeing them from the constraints that were placed on them since the 1950’s. They are fed up of being accountable, and are working to take away our right to take them to task. If we REALLY want to change for the better, it won’t be achieved by marching or anything else. It’ll be achieved by allowing ourselves to see greed for the socially corrosive impulse that it is. When the desire for vast wealth is met with shame and contempt, rather than a sign of success, change will come. Unfortunately, we’ve given fascism a big head start. Until next time…

DON’T LOSE YOUR VOICE - RESIDENTS IN NPT URGED TO LOOK OUT FOR THEIR VOTER REGISTRATION DETAILS

The annual canvass of eligible voters is now underway, with 14 to 16-year-olds and qualifying foreign citizens able to register to vote for the first time. Local residents are being warned not to lose their voice on decisions that affect them by making sure their electoral registration details are up to date. With elections taking place in Neath Port Talbot in May 2021, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.

The annual canvass ensures that Neath Port Talbot Council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.They would then be able take part in any future elections. This includes the newly enfranchised. Next year’s Senedd elections will be the first time 16-17 year olds and qualifying foreign citizens will be able to vote. It is therefore very important to capture these groups of people in the electoral register. Don’t forget - 14 and 15 year olds are also now able to register to vote, but will only be able to vote in Senedd Elections once they have turned 16, in the meantime they will remain inactive on the register. Mr. Steven Phillips, Electoral Registration Officer at Neath Port Talbot Council said: “It’s important that residents keep an eye out for messages from Neath Port Talbot Council so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in Neath Port Talbot. To make sure you are able to have your say at the Senedd and Police & Crime Commissioner Elections in May 2021, simply follow the instructions from your local authority. “If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post.” People who have moved recently are particularly encouraged to look out for the voter registration messages from Neath Port Talbot Council and check the details. Research by the Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time. Across Great Britain, 92% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered, compared to 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year. Rhydian Thomas, Head of Electoral Commission Wales, said: “It’s really important that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to do so. More people are now entitled to vote in Wales, including 16-17 year olds and qualifying foreign citizens. Making sure you provide the necessary information to your local authority when it is needed will ensure the process runs smoothly. This is particularly helpful in the current public health situation, as it will help avoid the need for home visits from canvassers. “There’s lots of helpful information about registering to vote on our website https://www. electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter.” Any residents who have any questions can contact their local registration team at elections@npt.gov.uk or on (01639) 763330. 11

Dementia and the use of Powers of Attorney and the Court of Protection It is estimated that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 10 men over the age of 55 will develop dementia during their lifetime. With this in mind, at Jennifer Melly law when advising on the preparation of Wills we also suggest that people consider planning for their lifetime and the possibility that they may need help to make decisions and/ or manage their affairs during their latter years. Powers of Attorney Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) can be prepared to legally appoint a person or persons to manage your finances and make decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. There are two types of LPA as follows:- Health and Welfare LPA- this allows your attorneys to make decisions about your medical treatment, how you are cared for or where you live. It can also give them power to give or refuse consent to life sustaining treatment if desired. This type of LPA is only used if you lack capacity to make decisions yourself. - Property and Financial Affairs LPA – this gives your attorneys power to manage your finances, so they can pay bills for you, sell your property and deal with your bank accounts. Whilst you still have capacity to make decisions your attorney can act under your instruction, however, should you lose capacity they can continue to act and make decisions for you in your best interests. We advise that consideration is given to preparing LPAs while fit and well to ensure that the persons you choose are legally able to act on your behalf. Although many people believe that they can put the document in place as and when they suffer ill health, this may not be possible if the illness is sudden or severe. Court of Protection If you lack the capacity to prepare an LPA then in order for anyone to be able to make decisions for you and deal with your finances they would need to apply to the Court of Protection to act as your deputy. Anyone can apply to the court to act on your behalf and this may not necessarily be the person or persons you would choose yourself. This type of application can be expensive and time consuming and in the meantime no one would have access to your money. This can cause difficulties financially and can be very stressful for those close to you. If you would like advice on any of the above matters then please contact us for further information. APPROVAL TO USE PAVEMENTS NOW AVAILABLE TO HELP BUSINESS GET BACK UP AND RUNNING Businesses can now apply to Powys County Council for permission to operate on pavements, public areas and reclaimed highways to help them get back up and running. The coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has had a significant impact on the lives and health of many Powys citizens, but it has also had severe economic consequences. The lockdown had an immediate impact on the way in which our town centres operate, with many businesses being required to close for

a significant period of time. With many of these businesses now reopening, we must now ensure our public spaces and town centres are not only safe but also allow local businesses to trade within the guidelines. The approval to use the pavements, available from the council, allows businesses to create an outdoor café style atmosphere, along with providing other services and recreation amenities, on designated areas of the public highway. “There is no quick fix to recover from the Covid-19 crisis, social distancing and the need for personal protection measures will be with us for some time.” Explains Cllr Heulwen Hulme, cabinet member for Highways. “Open areas in our town centres is limited, and while some businesses are fortunate enough to have their own space, many will not. By working with residents, town councils and local businesses, the council will support the reallocation of space in a flexible way to accommodate shoppers, diners, visitors and local residents to safely use and enjoy together. “Imagine metropolitan street cafes, cosmopolitan and artisan spaces, open air markets, thriving independent retailers, and popular places to eat and drink. Reimagining and recreating our towns in this way will make them visually more appealing and increase the footfall of shoppers, residents, visitors and tourists. Making them, in turn, a vibrant, thriving place to do business and socialise.” Every town will be different, with a bespoke plan to maximise the strengths of the area and needs of the businesses. In areas where roads can be fully or partly pedestrianised, pavement licences can be granted to help create open air dining and socialising space for cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. Each application will be assessed and consulted on its own merits. Businesses must demonstrate that they can operate within social distancing regulations and highway rules to ensure the safety of customers and other members of the public. After an intriguing mix of weather during summer 2020 with some lengthy periods of dry weather and warm to very warm temperatures, September, as with recent times, will continue to provide and uphold the tradition of some pleasantly engaging conditions, albeit perhaps not as focused as previous years. Whilst some early new season warmth may yield the risk of further thunderstorm activity, there will be periods of dry and settled weather accompanied by above seasonal norm temperatures, offering a late run of further blue skies and sunshine, but with a hint from overnight values that autumn is upon us. To reinforce that premise, some wetter, windier, and fresher weather is to be expected as the Atlantic stirs to funnel in sequences of low pressure. BOOKSTART PACKS THROUGH POWYS LIBRARY SERVICE Powys Library Service has joined a pilot scheme across Wales, led by Booktrust Cymru, to provide Bookstart packs to families who did not receive one from their Health Visitor due to the Coronavirus lockdown. Bookstart is a national scheme that encourages parents to share and enjoy books with their children from an early age. Bilingual baby and toddler packs were routinely gifted to families by Health Visitors; however, this was not possible during lockdown. This will now be restarting and continue to be the normal way to receive a pack. Any family who did not receive a pack is invited to contact the library service using the book Order & Collect request helpline 01597 827460 to order their pack and arrange collection. The scheme will operate from the main Order & Collect centres (Machynlleth, Llanfyllin, Y Lanfa (Welshpool), Newtown, Llandrindod, y Gaer and Ystradgynlais) with other pick-up points available by arrangement. Councillor Rachel Powell, Cabinet Member for Young People, Leisure and Culture, said: “With a background in early years and child development, through various roles, I know the importance of the Bookstart packs, that encourage early social relationships, affirm positive attachments and are vital for speech and language development. It is important that all families have access to this early resource especially during this time, when face-to-face support has been limited. “There are some resources through this scheme and for any baby, just hearing a parent or care givers voice in describing pictures will be a positive introduction to the benefits of any literacy resource.” We are also encouraging parents to bring their baby up to the library (no ID required) and collect a bag of library books to borrow and share. EXPENSIVE LESSON FOR MAN WHO DUMPED PADDLING POOL IN LAY-BY A man who dumped a child’s paddling pool, a TV set, toys, clothes, paint tins, and bags of household waste in a lay-by in Resolven has been sentenced to fines and costs totalling £1,151.94. Swansea Magistrates heard Craig Richard Lews, 35, of Maescynon, Hirwaun, Aberdare, dumped the waste at Tanyrhiw Road, Resolven, in March of last year. A complaint from a member of the public led to an investigation by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Waste Enforcement Team. The team traced the waste to a house in Glynneath which a female tenant had recently vacated. The tenant explained she paid cash for a man to remove waste from the garden of the house she was leaving. Waste enforcement officers then interviewed Mr Lewis who accepted he was paid £50 to remove “two van loads” of items from the garden. Mr Lewis admitted dumping the first load of waste at Tanyrhiw Road, Resolven and further admitted he dumped a second van load on the “Glynneath bank” (between Pontwalby and Aberdare). Mr Lewis confirmed he was not a registered waste carrier. He pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates Court this month where he was fined £480, ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge and prosecution costs of £623.94. Neath Port Talbot Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering, Cllr Ted Latham, said: “This was an expensive lesson for this defendant who now knows that this authority will not hesitate to prosecute those who seriously damage our environment by fly-tipping.” 23

POETRY In Praise of Ancient Gods It seems we have forgotten how to make atonement to the earth and sea and air. Now there’s a lack of riches that we took and in our greed almost exhausted here. This age of scientific know-how has left us very little to endow. If we are not to be annihilated, imploded in some black hole of our own design, we should perhaps return to ancient gods, whose truths and wisdom we have overthrown; deities that we with arrogance dismiss, preferring, it seems, apotheosis of the instant, superficial and the slick. The quondam gods of corn, fertility and fire, were more than fictions of a golden age, they formed a synthesis of lore a communis sententia - derived from principles by which their lives were lived. Could we not restore that wisdom of the heart, part superstitious, part intuitive? Our present era with its emphasis on scientific logic is too negative. YSTRADGYNLAIS LIBRARY RESEARCH FEATURED BY IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM Research carried out by a south Powys library into the names on a local war memorial is now live on the Imperial War Museum website.

The commemoration of the centenary of the end of World War One inspired staff at Ystradgynlais Library to research the names on their local war memorial. This research was initially displayed on British Legion poppies, but after a well-received reaction from the local community, the library staff decided to continue their work and join the Imperial War Museum’s citizen

The use of a microfilm of the local paper of the time, Llais Llafur, as well as the help of two customers, Val Trevallion and Jon Davies, was essential to aid the research of its extensive local studies section. Further information for their studies was found through the library’s access to genealogy websites alongside the National Library of Wales’ digitised newspaper collection and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records of the fallen. Cllr Rachel Powell, Cabinet Member for Young People, Leisure and Culture, said: “This project emphasises the value of our libraries in reflecting and preserving the history and culture of their communities. “Libraries throughout Powys offer unique resources and provide staff that are keen to support the communities they serve.” Project co-ordinator, Janet Mulready, said: “The research became very absorbing, and soon filled every dinner break and evening! Perusal of the old newspapers turned up some fascinating snippets. “As the stories of the individual servicemen unfolded, it was often hard to hold back the tears.” The library hopes that it has done the community proud in ensuring that those listed on Ystradgynlais War Memorial are now more than a list of names and that their stories will live on. The fallen that are commemorated on the Ystradgynlais War Memorial are now one of just over 8000 communities on the Lives of the First World War website. POETRY Ode to Crynant, my follow on from 2019. One year later! Another year passes, that now makes it three, since I came to live here, in the Dulais valley, and amongst names I now pronounce, with only slight difficulty, Cwmmawr, Drefach, and Llandybie. Although I’ve known loss, my first friend passed away, and my handyman pal felt he could no longer stay, but others were there to help brighten my day, Ffairfach, Llangadog, and Myddfai. I no longer go to the bakers to fetch lavabread, I have learnt from my errors and have tried Welsh cakes instead, they’re OK eaten hot with butter, or so it was said, Llanfynydd, Pencader, and Cwmduad. And I’m now learning Welsh and can say “braf cwrdd a chi”, but having lived in the Netherlands it’s all double Dutch to me, it will take 20 more years to learn “esgusodwch fi”, Pen-y-Mynydd, Pontatwn, and Llanelli. And the last months have been hard due to virus corona, from Crynant to Brussels and on down to Verona, I’ve looked long and hard but I can’t find it’s owner, in Upper Tumble and Capel Hendre, but not Barcelona. And the Welsh Miss that I hoped for to bring me some cheer, one bright summer morning in my life did appear, she came from close by, and not as once I did fear, from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. A DANCE OF LIGHT AND COLOUR As many of you will know, our resident astrologer Izabella Vlahavas was living in Dyffryn Cellwen when she first began submitting her ‘Sun Signs’ horoscope column to us many years ago. Izabella left the Dulais Valley for Australia in 2011, returning a couple of years later to sell her home, before returning to London where she is close to family. She describes her current location as “Not Wales, but not bad”, and continues to shout for Wales in rugby and football. All the while she has continued painting and expressing herself through her art.

A few years ago an exhibition of her work, called ‘A Dance Of Light And Colour’, was held in Barnes, South London, and we thought it would be nice for all of her friends and acquaintances back here to get a peek. A video of the exhibition is on YouTube and includes some insight from Izabella on the inspiration for her paintings, many of which are from her time in Wales.

PEOPLE WITH CANCER IN POWYS INVITED TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES

Improving the Cancer Journey in Powys (ICJ Powys) is a three-way partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board. ICJ Powys wants to ensure that every adult in the county who is diagnosed with cancer is able to have a conversation with a trained professional about their needs and how best these can be met. This needs assessment will cover not just medical needs, but will, for the first time, look at wider concerns people face such as housing, finance and work and bring them all together in one place. This personalised approach will be developed by listening to the experiences of people living with cancer alongside charities and health and social care professionals. Members of the network will play a key role in the programme by sharing their insights about what works well and what could be improved so as to help shape future services. Cerys Humphreys, the Improving the Cancer Journey Programme Lead, said: “We want everyone in Powys who is living with cancer, to live life as fully as they can, and by providing practical, physical, emotional, spiritual and social support, so people can achieve what matters most to them. “Listening to people’s stories, experiences and insights about their cancer journey is a fundamental part of the ICJ Powys programme. Recruiting members to Macmillan’s existing network will help ensure that their views are given influence and will result in a ‘fit for purpose’ way that health services in Powys are delivered. “People joining the network will be able to get involved in the programme in a number of ways, and at times that suit them including attending the official launch which we are planning to hold in early Autumn.” Speaking about the ICJ Powys programme, Richard Pugh, Head of Partnerships for Macmillan in Wales, said: “This programme aims to get to the very real issues and worries that people in Powys with a diagnosis face so we can work out the very best way to support them. “Often a diagnosis of cancer creates a number of worries - not just worries about how their treatment will affect their health and well-being, but also practical things like returning to work, paying bills and living with the long-term effects. This is particularly the case now we are also all coping with the impact of Covid-19 which is affecting every area of our lives. “By understanding people’s cancer experience and outcomes we can develop solutions to support individual need and to ultimately understand what will enable people living with cancer to take back control. “Advances in treatment have meant that the cancer story is changing and by 2030, it is estimated that around four million people in the UK, will be living with, and beyond cancer. MY EARLIEST MEMORY by Aldous Crave

Memory can be such an unruly and uncooperative companion. How many of us, when tasked with remembering important events in our lifetimes, find that the memory we have of it is less an insightful and analytic account of the event itself, and more an accompanying memory of something that, by comparison, seems trivial, unimportant or barely relevant? This is certainly the case when I cast my mind back for the purposes of this essay, in search of the elusive ‘earliest memory’. As I rummage around my memories, checking here and there to see which parts of my memory align themselves with the real world, I am deeply disconcerted to find that my filing system has no respect for chronology at all. Even worse - my memories have always made perfect sense to me in the order that my subconscious mind seems to have placed them. Modern times, however, do not allow us the luxury of nesting in our own little worlds; the internet has made it brutally simple to prove to oneself that one is not quite as precise one would like to believe. Three facts from the outside world have floored me during my research this evening; the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the death of Elvis Presley, and the release of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘It’s A Heartache’. In my mind these events are not only years apart, but so far apart that my family was living in three different homes when they happened. Bonnie’s record is the earliest in my mind. I remember sitting on the floor next to a blue vinyl covered ‘Dansette’ style record player listening to it over and over, staring at the picture of my beloved on the cover of the 7-inch single. My first crush! Decades later, when I had the good fortune to be playing on the same bill as Bonnie, I found myself alone with her at the back of the building. The sound of a packed theatre and music spilled out into the summer night and I froze like a rabbit in the headlights. I just looked at her, helpless and speechless. She looked back; I shudder to think what she made of me. Next was the demise of The King. I was devastated. Or rather, I might have been devastated, but there is a distinct possibility that my mind has placed the devastation there sometime later. I only wonder about it because I cannot really remember listening to him before that age, but became a huge fan later in my childhood. I have always known, of course, that this was in 1977 when I was 7 years old. The last of these three (in my mind) was the Silver Jubilee. I remember the fuss in school, the mug, the coin, the party etc. It takes some concentration to separate this one out from Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding some 4 years later. In my mind I lived in three different properties for each of these. My discovery of Bonnie was at my first childhood home, I have no doubt. The death of Elvis Presley occurred, I’m sure, while at my second home, and the Jubilee when we had moved from that home into a pub that my parents took over. Separately, I could probably have placed the last two in the same year without thinking about my own chronology for them. But Bonnie!? I would have sworn that our love went back further than ’77! In the real world the events ran Jubilee, Elvis, Bonnie. I’m certain that my memory of the Bonnie adoration scene is true, but it must have been one of her earlier tracks for that to work. It is this chronological confusion that has me dithering off subject; my earliest memory. You may be suspecting that the above analysis is simply a crude tool used to stall this divulgence but, as you will see, there is no reason for me to employ such dastardly methods. It is just a common or garden early memory, nothing particularly special. There is no flash of prodigy or insightful glimpse into the early moulding of my personality. It is merely seconds long; a snippet, if you will, of toddlerhood. And it is this: I am sat on the floor. I stand up, turn to my mother, and say something. I cannot hear my voice or even if there are words there, but I can feel the urgency in my tone. My mother jumps up from the sofa – I can hear her voice; “Wait! Wait! Hold on!” as she runs into the next room. She’s returning, but as she enters the room I hear the wet thud at my feet. My father is laughing hysterically. “Oh! Bloody hell – my new bloody rug!” says mother. I feel disappointed and confused. End of scene. Okay, it’s not the most profound insight into the mind of a child, and it’s hardly one to roll out with hilarity at a dinner party at your boss’s place, but none of that is what I now find bothersome about it.

This month I thought I would say something about marble and its suitability as a material for memorials. In many cases when we clean a marble memorial we will find circular blooms deep within the material. Unfortunately marble is a porous material and over many years, without regular cleaning, it will be colonised by lichens which can be removed from the surface but not from deep down in the material. These lichens can extend far enough into the marble to make it impractical to re-surface the material. Now this is not a reason to discard a memorial as these blooms do not prevent a memorial from being transformed dramatically for the better. Marble is not recommended by most masons for this very reason; however it is important to realise that many people like a memorial to reflect the passage of time, and marble can certainly provide that.

Sausage Balls with Butternut Squash

Other than in a veggie curry, I’ve never really found this squash particularly tasty or useful. This recipe has changed my mind! Give it a try - you won’t be disappointed.

INGREDIENTS

8 Pork Sausages Butternut Squash, approx 500g, cubed 2 Red Onions, cut into wedges 1 tsp Fennel Seeds, crushed lightly 1Tbsp Fresh Sage, chopped 1 Tbsp Olive Oil 150ml good Chicken Stock Set your oven to preheat to 190C/ Gas Mark 5. While that’s heating up, take a large mixing bowl and squeeze the sausage meat out of the skins. Add the fennel seeds and chopped sage and mix through well (nothing beats hands for this bit). When thoroughly mixed divide and roll up the mixture into 12 - 15 equal sized meatballs. Take a shallow baking pan or tray and add the cubed squash and onion wedges. Drizzle these with the olive oil and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Nestle the sausage meatballs in among the squash and onions, then bake for approx. 40 minutes or until the butternut squash is soft and the meatballs are cooked all the way through. Pour in the stock and return to the oven for another 10 - 15 minutes. Serve with spring greens, cabbage or sauteed spinach. Phil 59

I hope this letter will help 80 year olds exercise, especially during lockdown. I am 86 years old. During the lockdown period I have ‘walked and run’ on each consecutive day - 131 days in all. I am determined to continue this schedule right through the lockdown period. Each day at midday I have used my back garden as my course. I walk 1 mile and run 1 mile each day. I don’t miss the gym - I’ve improvised. I also eat sensibly. I have lost 2lbs since lockdown - all my friends and family have put on weight. Lockdown has been my friend, not my enemy! WELSH GOVERNMENT GRANT FOR HELP WITH SCHOOL UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT FOR SPORTS, ARTS AND MORE Welsh Government has introduced a Pupil Development Grant Access Grant. The purpose of which is to provide grant assistance to families on low incomes for the purchase of: • School uniform including coats and shoes; • School sports kit including footwear; • Uniform for enrichment activities, including but not limited to, scouts; guides; cadets; martial arts; sports; performing arts or dance; • Equipment e.g. school bags and stationery; • Specialist equipment where new curriculum activities begin such as design and technology; • Equipment for out of school hour’s trips such as outdoor learning e.g. waterproofs. Please note: IT equipment, such as mobile phones and ipads, are excluded from this funding. Who is eligible? Funding is available to pupils who are eligible for free school meals entering: • Reception class of maintained primary schools in September 2020; • Year 3 of maintained Primary Schools/Junior Schools in September 2020; • Year 7 of maintained secondary schools in September 2020; • Year 10 of maintained secondary schools in September 2020; or • pupils in special schools, special needs resource bases and pupil referral units who are aged 4 or aged 11 in September 2020. • Funding of up to £125 is available for each eligible learner with the exception of those in Year 7.
