Editor’s Foreword STOP THE RIDE, I WANNA GET OFF! Even the most interested in politics are now showing signs of fatigue. All sides seem to have become a mass of contradictions. It’s difficult to pick through with our ‘journalists’ sneering and spitting their negative spin on anything and anyone who even attempts to solve anything. Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle said on Twitter last year “If you’re a political journalist who has regular contact with people in power, and your analysis is always aligned with prevailing orthodoxy, then you’re not really a journalist, you’re a courtier.” He’s absolutely right. Our media – with rare exception – has proved itself unfit for purpose. Tasked with reporting truth, they have instead looked to cover their own backs; promoting only that which seeks to reinforce or protect the stock of the wealthy. It’s not difficult to understand why when you realise that the vast majority of the controlling editors and management in the media come from the same narrow passageways into the world of adulthood as the Eton mess currently laying waste to our country. So now we have a section of society, largely misinformed deliberately and admittedly by those same section of people, claiming that the sovereignty they have been demanding back is now a bit of a pain in the backside so they’re just going to switch it off for a while. This, we are told, is democracy. Over my dead Granny’s arse it is! The world of politics has now become so nonsensical that it’s difficult to see it ever recovering – at least not with Boris Johnson’s plan to sell us out to the US, nor with the Fib Dem’s plan to tell 17.4 million people to go and take a running jump. The ONLY reasonable solution to the impasse is to re-run the referendum, honestly (under serious threat of swift and severe penalties for those rich people that like to lie so much) and with proper, verifiable facts. As awful as the prospect seems, there is no real logical argument against it. On the bright side, a recent poll placed the number of people supporting independence for Cymru at 41%!! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, instead of dealing with all of these Westminster loonies, we just had to deal with our own loonies? I wonder what the Welsh equivalent of Eton is? Maybe by next month, we’ll know a lot more about a lot more…

After a mostly favourable Summer 2020 weather-wise so far, the final third of the season will continue the encouraging theme. Both June and July offered us chiefly settled and warm conditions, and not only that, but delivering such weather for sustained periods of time and not just a short run of days. August looks set to continue this pattern, with a probable lean towards the second half of the month presenting us with the most stability as we head into September. Expect at times some very warm, possibly hot temperatures, and the associated risk that these values bring with thunderstorm activity ensuing. After the middle part of the month, a settling down phase with dry and settled weather, and more endurable temperatures as opposed to challenging heat. NEW BALLET SCHOOL OPENS IN VILLAGE This month sees the opening of a new ballet class at St. Cynog’s Church Hall in Ystradgynlais. The Pamela Miller Ballet School has been teaching students for almost 40 years, although until this month students from the upper valleys have had to travel to classes further afield. Pamela Miller trained in London to be a professional dancer. Her great love was the Cecchetti style of Classical Ballet, which she studied under the eminent teacher Nesta Brooking. She also studied many other forms of dance, but appreciated the strength and artistic development her Cecchetti training gave her, and the help it was in her career as a professional dancer. As a child she loved to dance, and those happy memories of preparing for the first Cecchetti grade examinations convinced her that this was the method of dance she would teach her in school. Prior to founding the school over 37 years ago, Pamela taught in London. During these years Pamela has been invited several times by the Cecchetti Branch of the Imperial Society of Teacher of Dancing to judge their prestigious National Competitions, and she jointly organised the West Country Mabel Ryan Awards for 12 years before establishing the Wales and the West Cecchetti Awards, and the Welsh Classical Ballet Associate program. Pamela was a Cecchetti examiner for 15 years, examining children and students from all over Great Britain. Ten yeas ago, she was awarded the Rita Emerson Shield, and more recently, the Cechetti Society presented Pamela with a special award in appreciation of her many years of service – The first ever award of it’s kind given by the Society. Strictly is back on our TV screens – a real clue it’s that time of year again; getting your annual flu jab. But if it’s not convenient to see your doctor, why not call into your local pharmacy instead? Pharmacists are trained to give flu vaccinations and they are a good option for people whose working hours or other commitments makes it difficult for them to get to their GP surgery. Pharmacies have longer opening hours than GP surgeries and many also open on weekends and you will often be able to walk in and get vaccinated without having to book an appointment. The convenience of the service is proving popular with patients across the Swansea Bay health board region, where most pharmacies now offer flu jabs. The vaccination is free to anyone over the age of 65, and to at-risk groups like carers, pregnant women and people with some chronic health conditions. For everyone else it costs about £10. Even if you are not in one of the at-risk groups it’s worth thinking about getting vaccinated, not only to help protect yourself but also to avoid spreading it to others. Benjamin Rock, a pharmacist at Pearns Pharmacy, Cwmfelin, Swansea, said: “We advise people to get their jabs early because it takes two weeks for the immunisation to become effective. Everyone should get a vaccination because it not only protects you, but also your friends and family, some of whom may be vulnerable to infection. It also stops the bug being passed on by people on the street or on the bus.” At Lloyds Pharmacy at 50 Sway Road, Morriston, pharmacist Ian McGlashan said: “Flu cases put tremendous pressure on hospitals and GP surgeries every winter, so pharmacies are helping to take some of that pressure off by preventing more people from catching flu and passing it on to others. “GPs normally run one or two flu clinics a week but if people can’t make it to one of those, they find it handy to be able to pop in here, especially as we are open from 8.30-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday. “Most people just walk in and have the vaccination there and then but we can also make appointments.” Pharmacists are fully trained to deliver the injections and undergo an online assessment every year and face-to-face training every two years with qualified nurses. “Vaccinations are given in a private room and before we go ahead we take people through an

In the past named carers in the community could get the service for free, but now it has been extended to all care home staff, in a move that has been widely welcomed. Flu is spread through airborne viruses when someone coughs or sneezes. It can also be passed on through touch, so it’s easy for carers to pass on the virus to a frail, elderly person. FREE NURSE HEALTH CHECKS FOR SENIOR PETS IN SEPT/OCT Looking After Our Senior Pets in their Golden Years Most of us can agree that it’s not fun getting old: constant tiredness, achy bones and dreaded wrinkles are just a few of the many downsides of getting older. But did you know that our dogs and cats might be going through something similar as they get older? While they probably won’t be getting crow’s feet, pets do go through changes as they age, many of which require our attention to keep them healthy. Today, we will be discussing your senior pets, and how you can help look after them in their Golden Years.
When is my Pet a Senior? First of all, we should probably establish when your pet actually is a senior. Ask a hundred different people when they think a person is considered ‘old’ and you’ll get a hundred different answers! It’s the same for our pets because, to be honest, we don’t know! Old age is a loose term, and we don’t currently have a way to definitively say when an animal is a senior. Instead, we take multiple factors into account, such as life expectancies of the breed, an individual’s general health, and so on. As a rough guide, most cats are considered seniors when they are at least 10 years old. Dog breeds vary a lot more than cat breeds, so the age of seniority varies more as well. Generally, the larger the breed, the shorter the life expectancy, thus becoming a senior happens more quickly - this means a Mastiff or an Irish Wolfhound might be senior as young as 5-8 years old, while a Terrier can be called senior around age 10. We do emphasise that this is just a guideline, and just like people, there is great variation; you may have a middle-aged pooch that prefers to sleep all day, or a 12 year old cat out terrorising the neighbourhood like he was a decade younger!

As summer is now here , and things begin to return to something a little closer to normal, many are spending some time tending to family memorials. I thought I would touch a little on the upkeep and maintenance of memorials. Lettering, if cut into granite, is most often finished in silver or gold leaf. Never be tempted to scratch or wipe into the letters, as this could damge the leaf or paint. If your letters are in lead, whether raised or flush, speak to a memorial mason before attempting to clean them. Highly polished granite is easily cleaned with some soapy water or glass cleaner. Seek advice for the specific memorial before attempting to clean marble, Forest of Dean or rustic granite, and if any doubt ask a memorial mason.
