I for one cannot wait for the £200 loan that I won’t actually see and that I have no choice in taking out but will pay back over five years. How bizarre a solution to the energy price increase is that!!? An energy price increase, it must be said, that has been given the green light by departments of government. An energy price increase to an industry that is currently boasting record profits. If you only listen to government about this issue, we are in crisis. Power companies are going bust left, right and centre simply because of the rising cost of energy. What they omit is that power companies are actually going bust because, in order to win customers, they over-subscribed fixed rate contracts with their customers and cannot charge them more as their costs go up. This is a gamble that they lost and, of course, the customer’s fixed rate contracts are now gone. As for the major power companies boasting record profits? Well it’s rich people, you see, and they must not be allowed to lose any money at all whatsoever. You have to understand that, even if they’re still making money, it’s just not as much as they could be making, so it’s just the same as losing, really. The UK Government’s solution to relieving the abject poverty that is about to take over our nation is to force everyone to borrow £200 and pay it back over the next five years. I just want to put that into perspective. Their solution to the current cost of living crisis is to make each household borrow the equivalent of £3.85 per week. You really could not make it up The French government, hardly a bastion of socialism, has told it’s energy firms to accept the £8 billion hit that is coming their way. It’s hardly a radical opinion – that the job of energy companies is to provide energy to their population first and foremost. Everything else should, and does, come after that. Welsh Government, recognising the greed that is controlling Westminster, has offered its own package of support out of an already underfunded settlement, with payments to households totalling £330 million. Regardless of which party is controlling it, THAT is how you govern a country, by looking after people. I’m sure that if Westminster did not have so much control that the Welsh Government would go much further, too. In his novel ‘To Sail Beyond The Sunset’, the science fiction writer Richard A. Heinlein wrote “It was said again and again that, from mid-century on, both parents had to have jobs just to pay the bills. If this was true, why was it not necessary in the first half of the century? How did laborsaving (sic) machinery and enormously increased productivity impoverish the family?” We all know the answer to this; the rich are now richer than they have ever been. At the only time in history that we could adequately feed, clothe and house every person on the planet we fail to do so because we allow this imbalance to stand. Yet still, at every ballot, deluded citizens will vote for rich people (of all political persuasions) to make decisions on how their lives will turn out. And as the current crop of Westminster buffoons demonstrate – education and intelligence are far from guaranteed bedfellows.

COVID CHANGES

Powys residents are being urged to remain on their guard for COVID-19 despite a reduction in county cases and the further easing of national restrictions. Cases numbers in the county have fallen from the very high rates seen early in the New Year with the Omicron wave but remain above 300 cases per 100,000 population with significant hotspots such as Brecon being registered (mid-February). Director of Public Health, Stuart Bourne said: “I am asking residents to stay on their guard and follow the advice we have all got used to over the past two years regarding face mask use, social distancing and hand hygiene, and making sure they are fully vaccinated.” Wales completed the process of moving from Covid Alert Level Two to Zero last month and new further removal of restrictions will be introduced in February following the latest Welsh Government review. The changes will include a relaxation on the need to show a NHS Pass to enter events and later the requirement to wear a facemask. From Friday 18th February it is no longer a legal requirement to show a Covid Pass in Wales to enter large indoor and outdoor events, nightclubs, cinemas, theatres and concert halls, but if venues and events want to continue using Covid Passes they can. From 28th February, Welsh Government have removed the requirement for face coverings to be worn in indoor public places, apart from in retail, on public transport and in health and care settings. Adults can remove their face coverings when they are interacting with babies and small children at baby and toddler groups. Self-isolation will remain an important way of breaking the chain of transmission of the virus and preventing more people from becoming infected. Keep Wales safe: Get both jabs and when invited, get your booster. Limit your contacts. Outdoors is safer than indoors. Do a lateral flow test before seeing others. What to do after somebody dies? When somebody dies, whether they have made a Will or not, there are certain procedures that need to be undertaken. There are three things you must do in the first few days after somebody dies: • You will need to obtain a medical certificate from a GP or hospital doctor (unless there is a Coroner’s Inquest, in which case this will be delayed until the Inquest is concluded). You will need this in order to register the death. • You will need to register the death within five days. You will then receive a death certificate. It is advisable to purchase additional copy death certificates as these will be useful when dealing with the estate. • After registering the death you will be provided with paperwork from the Registrar which will allow you to arrange the funeral. You can use a funeral director or arrange it yourself. Your local registrar will be able to advise whether you have the option of using the ‘Tell us Once’ service which lets you report the death to multiple organisations including HMRC, The Department of Work and Pensions, The Passport Office, the local council and the DVLA. If you choose not to use the ‘Tell us Once service’, you will have to notify the relevant organisations yourself. You will need to contact the deceased’s bank, building society, mortgage company, private pension, insurance and utility providers to close or change the details of their accounts or policies.

NEATH PORT TALBOT COUNCIL’S LEISURE SERVICES ARE TO BE BROUGHT BACK IN-HOUSE

At a meeting held on February 1st, 2022, NPT Cabinet members agreed to bring Neath Port Talbot Council’s leisure services back under the council’s management (in-house). A decision to outsource was taken in 2002 leading to the not-for-profit trust Celtic Leisure being appointed to run leisure services in 2003. The Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr. Ted Latham said: “There are a number of advantages to bringing these facilities back to in-house and this decision will enable us to continue supporting many more people to live healthier lives. “The council will have full control of leisure centres and other facilities, enabling us to determine the approach to opening hours, service delivery, fees and charges to ensure our leisure offer is focused on helping reduce inequality and improving the health of residents. There will also be benefits to existing staff who will have the security of transferring into the council’s employment. “Also, leisure services can be jointly marketed and operated alongside other local tourist and leisure offers to ensure a joined up approach, contributing to our objective of establishing Neath Port Talbot as a place people want to visit.” Following the Cabinet decision, council officers will now work with Celtic Leisure to facilitate an in-house leisure service and undertake the necessary consultation work. A report will be brought to members setting out proposed arrangements that will be necessary to establish a council controlled leisure service – the report will include the outcome of any public consultation for members to determine. Cllr Ted Latham added: “We now look forward to bringing our leisure services back in-house with the aim of increasing participation by our residents in sport and physical activity, encouraging people to become more active to improve their health and wellbeing.” The Cabinet decision is subject to a three-day call in period.

The outlook for March is strongly dependent on the settling in of a ridge of high pressure to hold any dry weather in place for a length of time, and whereas that looks likely for the wider picture across the UK, influencing the south and east with a run of drier conditions, that ridge may not hold firm enough to encompass the north and west, hence more of a mixed bag for Wales in general. However, despite spells of rain and lively winds, some drier and sunnier episodes are to be expected for us during March, which could give a gentle nod toward spring. Temperature wise, whilst the risk of limited frost activity remains, the trend does look like being a pleasantly mild one over all, something that will benefit not just us in Wales but much of Europe too, quite possibly to an excessive extent. On the average for rainfall across our region with above the average for temperature.

ARE YOU RECYCLING CORRECTLY?

We are always impressed that our residents are keen to recycle as much of their rubbish as possible, but it is important to remember to only place the correct items into the kerbside recycling boxes for their weekly collections. Adding incorrect items to the boxes makes life very difficult for our crews. If collected, these products must be removed by hand back at the depots before being sent to the recycling processors, who will reject material if contaminated with these items. “Previously crews would leave the incorrect items in the boxes with a note to explain why they hadn’t been taken with the rest of the recycling.” Explains Cllr Heulwen Hulme, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling. “However, during the pandemic we have been more lenient in collecting the full contents ensuring we minimise the risk of spreading the virus and keep our crews safe. But now we must once again concentrate our efforts into ensuring we only collect the correct material from the kerbside. “This means that residents may find that any incorrect items in their recycling boxes will be left behind. In some instances, where there is a lot of contamination, the full box may be left, with a note explaining that it will be emptied next time, once the offending items have been removed. “We understand that remembering what can and cannot be collected can be difficult, which is why we will leave a note explaining what we can and cannot accept. Powys residents have proved time and time again that they are committed to recycling much of their waste, and we thank them for their continued efforts with helping us collect, good quality recyclable material.” Most of the recycling mistakes occur in the red recycling box, with residents confused with what types of plastics can be collected in the weekly kerbside collections. As a reminder, in the red boxes we only want: • Clean and empty plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays • Clean and empty tins, cans, kitchen and bathroom aerosols, foil and metal lids Soft plastic film and wrapping can be bundled up and recycled at most supermarkets or taken to one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres. Blodau Ystradgynlais Dog Poo Bags Many of you will be aware that Blodau Ystradgynlais provided a very essential service i.e., provision of dog poo bags! Due to misuse of these bags, we unfortunately, had to remove and stop the service. This has only gone to show that this is something Ystradgynlais cannot do without. Nine out of ten dog owners clean up after their dogs. As always, it is the minority that spoil things for everyone else. So can we ask that we all work together to keep Ystradgynlais clean and beautiful. We plan to reintroduce the service. I was very interested in Alan and Yvonne Jewell’s amusing story concerning the film “Stan and Ollie” about Laurel and Hardy. Readers of your magazine may be interested to know that the comedy duo undertook another tour of British theatres in 1953/1954 and were due to play the Swansea Empire, commencing on 24th May 1954, the last date on the tour, but they never made it to the theatre again as the booking was cancelled when Ollie was taken ill on Wednesday 19th May after their first night at the Palace Theatre, Plymouth. He was in poor health at the time as those who watched the film may recall and he was diagnosed as having suffered a mild heart attack on top of a severe bout of flu. Joe Church completed the week at Plymouth and Gladys Morgan and Company stood in the following week at the Swansea Empire. What I found so admirable of their professionalism is that although he did not appear on stage, Stan Laurel went to the theatre each night to give moral support to the other acts. If you are interested in the history of the famous duo, I can highly recommend the book, “Laurel and Hardy the British Tours “ by author and fan A. J. Marriot. Regarding the Swansea Empire, it belonged to the Moss Empire Theatre Circuit and was unnecessarily demolished in 1960, having closed after the pantomime in February 1957. It was the first of the Moss Empires to be demolished, a decision that was something of a test case to determine the strength of opposition, replaced by a concrete block housing a Fine Fare supermarket, recently occupied by a discount retailer. In my opinion, the Empire was a far superior theatre to the surviving Grand Theatre and considering the buildings lost to the city centre during the blitz of February 1941, the authorities of the time should never have given consent to demolish such a magnificent building. At least we can rest assured that the former Palace Theatre in the High Street, incidentally called the Empire between 1892 and 1900, has been saved and is currently undergoing restoration but the Palace was a music hall as opposed to a theatre and had a much smaller capacity, 500 compared to the 1200 at the Empire. For those readers not familiar with the former Empire Theatre which stood next door to the former Carlton Cinema, now Waterstones Bookshop. John Skinner Cinema Theatre Association Cymru/Wales

COUNCIL WELFARE RIGHTS UNIT RAISES £5M EXTRA IN BENEFITS - ENSURE YOU GET YOUR ENTITLEMENT! With the cost of living soaring, families across Neath Port Talbot are being urged to seek advice from their local Welfare Rights Unit to ensure they get all the benefits they are eligible for. From just April 2021 to the end of January 2022, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Welfare Rights Unit has supported more than 2,000 people with benefit advice, appeal representation and full casework (form completion for example) raising more than £5m in extra income for these clients. That represents an average of £2,500 per person. The Welfare Rights Unit is a specialist section dealing with all aspects of helping people claim benefits they are entitled to. If you think you may be able to claim extra benefits but don’t know where to start, then the unit could be able to help. If you have been turned down for a benefit or have had your benefit stopped and are not sure why, the unit could help. It specialises in representing people at appeals, with the unit currently experiencing high demand in relation to Employment and Support Allowance in particular. The Welfare Rights team runs outreach surgery sessions in a number of parts of Neath Port Talbot. Alternatively the team may be able to resolve your problem over the telephone or visit you at home.

Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre At Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre, we have some amazing plans for the future! We already offer volunteering opportunities with ourselves and partner organisations, a Community Recycling Project, Community Repaint Scheme and a Foodbank. We will soon be opening our Community Cafe and beginning to plant in our new garden. We already have some incredible volunteers who are highly valued and a very important part of our team and are looking for some more, very special people to join us. Would you like to volunteer? In particular we are looking for someone to drive our van on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, on a short term basis. You don’t have to be available every day, any day would be a great help but you must be over 25 for insurance purposes. We are also looking for Saturday Assistants. We are open 10am till 1pm, again, you don’t need to be available every week. PLAID MS BACKS CROSS-PARTY CALLS TO PROTECT “IRREPLACEABLE COMMUNITY ASSET” South Wales West MS, Sioned Williams backs calls for the preservation of the historic Tennant Canal following concerns over its future. Following the partial collapse of a weir in 2015, the canal lost its primary source of water. Pumps were eventually installed to feed water directly from the River Neath, however, earlier last year the pumps were shut down and water flow into the canal was once again disrupted. Without water to feed the canal and maintain the flow, there are fears that the canal will become stagnant and that levels will drop once the warmer weather returns. In response to growing worry from residents, Sioned Williams has said; “Many residents have written to myself and other elected representatives regarding their concerns for the future of the Tennant Canal. I both share their concerns and support their call for urgent action to be undertaken. I have recently written to relevant stakeholders, including Neath Port Talbot Council, Natural Resources Wales, and the canal owners to ask that all efforts are taken to safeguard the canal. I also raised this in a meeting with the Leader, Deputy Leader and Chief Executive of Neath Port Talbot Council.” “The Tennant Canal is not just an irreplaceable piece of our heritage, it is a true community asset that is enjoyed by many locals and visitors each year. It is also an important environmental site, and I recently met with representatives of conservation charity Buglife in my capacity as the Species Champion for the Fen Raft Spider to discuss the canal’s position as a breeding ground for this rare spider and the potential impact reduced water levels would have on biodiversity.” “Failure to act now will lead to this beautiful canal being lost for future generations, and would also carry an enormous negative impact socially, historically, economically and environmentally. It is therefore vital that pumps are reinstalled as an interim measure while work is undertaken to repair the damaged section of the weir.” Closure of nearby industrial sites that required water from the canal has resulted in a loss of income for the owners, impacting on the levels and sustainability of investment. Without ongoing investment in maintenance and improvements, it is feared that this near two hundred year old canal could be lost. Support for people with arthritis and related conditions Cymru Versus Arthritis wants to ensure that people in Wales with arthritis, a musculoskeletal or related condition (e.g. fibromyalgia, gout, lupus) have the support and information they need to live well with their condition. We run several services, including free information sessions, support and activity groups. In September, we held our first support group session for the Ystradgynlais area in Cwmtwrch Miner’s Welfare Hall. The group meets monthly and aims to provide an opportunity for people with arthritis and related conditions to speak with others who understand what it’s like to live with a long-term condition. To share information and experiences and have a chance to take part in courses and activities e.g. self-management and exercise. These groups are free to attend and are open to anyone in the area with arthritis, a MSK or related condition. If you can’t attend a face-to-face meeting, we also hold online groups and courses or can provide support over the phone, by email or post. Hello again, this month I thought it may be of interest to demonstrate how we sometimes have to deal with extremely heavy memorials.

As you will find in most cemeteries, there are some quite enormous memorials to be found, some that have been in place for a very long time. Often these are a mix of granite, marble and concrete and require great care in moving, particularly when very old, as the cladding and base structure could easily come apart during the lift. As the photo above illustrates, these heavy memorials require the use of a special gantry as they are far too heavy to safely manoeuvre by hand. Hoisting and lifting something as heavy as this can be a very tense time. The work to the memorial in the picture went very well. However, because of its sheer weight it was a year before it could be re-fixed to the plot. If you have a memorial that is causing you concern, no matter what size, we are always here to advise you on the best route to remedy your situation.

DESCRIPTION & HISTORY The Ystalyfera Development Trust was established in 1995 as a response to taking forward actions to halt the declining economic and social prosperity then facing the community. At this time the Trust sought to focus its efforts on regenerating the community by restoring redundant buildings and encouraging self-help and social enterprise schemes. This still remains a core part of the Trust’s remit. In 2015 we moved from our original building at 72 Commercial Street (now the home of Trysor – our Charity Shop) and are now based at 22 Commercial Street. Today the Trust is involved in the following initiatives:  Property development – we own 4 properties which have been refurbished and improved and are let as a mix of commercial, community and residential units.  Computer classes  Promoting the Neath Port Talbot Credit Union  Photocopying, typing service, printing & scanning  Computer drop in – where members of the public can use a PC with internet access  Ystalyfera Community Car – Admin support and day to day bookings for car journeys  Employment support – CV’s, job search etc.  Volunteering placements – through our Charity Shop  Design Service – Business cards, letterheads, logo design, Order of Service  Health & Exercise Classes  Room Hire for a wide variety of clubs, social groups and businesses. MAIN SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES Community drop-in facilities are hosted by the Trust for people seeking advice and guidance on education, employment or business matters, as well as information about what is going on in their community. We have aided members of the public with the renewal of bus passes and most lately with COVID passes. The Trust has a wide range of rooms for hire such as our hall on the ground floor (that can also be accessed from the rear of the building) - this is used for Art and our sewing classes; to a fully integrated IT Suite which can be hired for meetings and training. We have a smaller meeting room on the 1st floor and have Wi-Fi throughout the building. The Trust has a stair life for access to the first and grounds floor for less mobile users. VISITOR: SISKIN WELSH NAME: PILA GWYRDD With the beginning of Spring later in the month, most species of bird have found their mate and will begin nest building and breeding as soon as they are ready. The pretty little Siskin, a member of the finch family, is a lot smaller than it’s Greenfinch cousins and also smaller than the Goldfinch. Mainly yellow/green in colour, the male sports a smart black crown and a bright yellow band on the wing. By comparison, the female is of far more muted appearance, but even so a charming and pretty little garden visitor. While many Siskins will winter and breed here if there is a suitable conifer plantation, they are also known to pair up in Britain during winter and then migrate together to Scandinavia to breed. The most likely time to see Siskins in your garden is early morning, but wet days will often bring them round as the cones on conifer trees need to be dry to open and expose their seeds. Ornamental conifers may attract them to your garden, along with mesh feeders packed with peanuts, nyger seed and sunflower hearts. March is likely your best chance to spot, while their beloved conifer cones are in short supply. Their presence in gardens is largely dependant on the success or failure of nearby conifer crops. In Wales, the likelihood of spotting a Siskin increases the further west you are.

Need advice? Antonina is here to help! Dear Antonina I am really worried about my daughter. She is 20 years old and is not as close to me or her father as she used to be. She dropped out of university suddenly with no proper explanation - when pushed she says the Uni experience wasn’t what she expected. Since coming back home she locks herself away in her room, keeps very late hours and doesn’t want to talk to us. My husband says she is an adult now and we end up rowing about the way we should tackle the problem. She is our only child and I am worried we will push her away if not careful. My husband thinks she needs some tough love and has told her to get a job and help out at home a bit more. I keep wondering if something bad may have happened to her because she gets angry when I ask her and says to leave her alone. I feel hurt she can’t tell me what is going on. I am so anxious and keep going over in my mind what might have happened to her. I am finding it difficult to sleep and my imagination is running away with me about all the terrible things that may have happened to her. Is there anything that you can do? Karen Dear Karen I am sorry you are worried about your daughter. Many of my clients who are parents of teenagers and young people still living at home do find this can be difficult. University isn’t necessarily a positive experience for some people. I tend to find my younger clients sometimes put more pressures on themselves and are very reluctant to talk to their parents about their problems. It is understandable that you are concerned and finding it difficult to communicate with your daughter as closely as you used to. Your disturbed sleep patterns are probably due to the anxiety and worry you are experiencing. Not enough sleep then leads you to have more worries and anxieties and the cycle begins again. However, it is possible for you to improve the quality of your sleep, and this is something I can help you with. This will enable you to deal with the challenging situation you face. This may well help you to create a calmer atmosphere at home so that you can take the heat out of the arguments and help you reach an agreement with your husband on the best approach. LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR IS ‘BRINGING BACK A GOOD NIGHT OUT’

Over the years he’s gained a reputation as something of a ‘phoenix whisperer’ in the hospitality trade. Throughout South Wales his expertise and vision has been the driving force behind a plethora of projects that have breathed new life into pubs and hotels that have lost their mojo. Now local entrepreneur Rob Megson, who is also responsible for reinvigorating The Old Cross Inn on Ammanford’s Quay Street has hit on a new concept – repurposing an old club hall with an open grill kitchen and smoker, a 110-seat restaurant AND a stage for full on live cabaret! Like most of our clubs and halls, Brynamman RFC’s has seen the use of its large hall diminish over the years until the space became an occasional venue for functions and private parties. Now, with the full co-operation of the club’s committee and steward, the large hall is undergoing extensive work to create Rob’s vision of a full cabaret restaurant. “We’re bringing back a good night out!” Rob proclaims excitedly “Every month we’ll be having a major act for our SHOWTIME evenings; a 2 course meal and a great show for just £25 per person” “We’re already months ahead on our bookings. Our Grand Opening will see The All Seasons perform their fantastic tribute to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, tickets for this have sold out in just a few days! The Abba Revival show has also sold out, but in the following few months we have The Vox Beatles and even The Fortunes to come” Of course, when the stage isn’t being set alight the food needs to speak for itself, and to make sure it does Rob has partnered up with Executive Chef Adrian Duffy. Adrian is well known among serious foodies, having cooked for Prime Ministers and Presidents right through to Bono and right around the UK. Adrian’s love for South Wales and its people have kept him here for over 20 years, and he’s as passionate about serving quality food to everyday customers as he was when serving big name clients. “Good food isn’t about being pretentious” said Adrian “It’s about using great quality ingredients and bringing out the best in them to offer the diner great value for money as well” “Our new smoker is bringing something a little different to the area, and I hope customers will find our open kitchen as entertaining as the food we’ll be serving” I asked Rob how he came to be opening a cabaret restaurant in the Amman Valley “The idea of a permanent restaurant in a rugby club hall does tend to raise a few eyebrows when people first hear about it.” He chuckles “But the work that the team have pulled off there is quite extraordinary – just the feel of the place is so far removed from a club hall, it’s absolutely jaw-dropping!” “Our clubs have always played an important part in our communities, this is just a continuation of that” he said. “This is not outside investors pretending to fly the Welsh flag. I live here, this is my community too, and I want all of my businesses to play their part in the communities they serve. This is not just about money for me. I can’t wait to see people here, enjoying the food, enjoying the shows, enjoying the company. SPAGHETTI with MEAT SAUCE

Purists would scream at me for calling this Marinara, so I’ll call it just meat sauce here. This is my store cupboard version of Marinara, easy to make at a pinch and a firm favourite with kids.

INGREDIENTS (serves 6) 1 - 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 2 Onions, finely chopped 3 Plump Cloves of Garlic, minced 500g Minced Beef 500ml Carton Tomato Passata 1 capful Red Wine Vinegar 1 Tbsp Worcester Sauce 1 Tbsp Dried Italian Herbs 2 tsp Dried Parsley 1 tsp Dried Oregano ½ - 1 tsp Smoked Paprika Freshly Ground Black Pepper 2 Tbsp Plain Flour ½ Beef Stockpot 500ml Hot Water 1 Tbsp Tomato Puree 1 tsp Sugar

Worcester Sauce and stir quickly through the onions, the add the paprika and all of the dried herbs, stirring through quickly and allowing to cook for a minute. Add the minced beef, breaking it down with one or two spatulas, and toss until lightly browned. Add a few good turns of black pepper. Sprinkle over the flour and stir through until you can see no dry flour at all. Add the tomato puree and stir through, then add the Passata, using the water to refill the carton or bottle then add that. Add the sugar and stir in the half a stockpot. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 15 20 minutes. In the meantime, add your pack of dried spaghetti to a large pan of salted water. Cook until just about done, then lift out using tongs and stir through the meat sauce until thoroughly mixed.
