Editor’s Foreword No doubt many of you have noticed that we are a little more slimline this month. Unfortunately, the economics of printing at the moment is in huge flux and, as much as I’d like, I’m unable to offer as much space as I’d like for community groups etc. as the economics just don’t support it. Hopefully some more businesses will throw their support behind the mag and we can start building up again from here to offer more space for these groups, in the meantime I’ll do what I can to try and hold some space for the most important bits of community information or news. I’ll also be trying to find room for the return of your favourite columns. Sadly, I think this is only the beginning of an ever tightening of finances for most of the population, be it business or personal. Petrol and Diesel are being tipped to hit £2.50 per litre – shocking when you consider that crude oil is now back below $100 a barrel. The Government’s sleight of hand figure manipulations would have us think that they are helping to keep costs low, but they are on a bonanza tax take from current fuel rates and show no sign of giving it up. In fact, the entire promise of ‘help’ from the government is sleight of hand. Promises of payments to help with high energy prices for our homes are, in fact, an indirect way of funnelling our taxes to rich energy companies. Just as with the inflated housing benefits payments that actually only benefit landlords but are sold to us as a benefit to tenants (as if almost 1 in 5 MPs are landlords, eh?). And yet energy and utility companies, oil and gas companies and supermarkets are all boasting record profits. It’s almost as if there’s a link! There is no answer to profiteering when we have elected a set of people that believe that profiteering is to be admired. When asked about the causes of the rises in our shopping baskets a couple of weeks ago, the CEO of Sainsbury’s gave a one word answer, “Brexit”. Another gem sold to us by those same set of people. A set of people who believe that protection of our human rights by an independent body is outrageous. A people who believe that flying desperate and destitute people out to Rwanda is morally fine (whilst, of course, hiding from you the fact that the agreement is to receive Rwandan refugees in exchange). “Take a pay cut to help curb inflation” says our illustrious PM, all the while knowing that it is his set of people that are causing the problems. Despicably, they use the plight of Ukraine as a catch-all excuse for the wrongs and ills that they are allowing. Their intent is to restore and exceed the historical imbalance between rich and poor. To have us back outside the factory gates, hoping to get picked for that day’s shift. To have no expectation of a decent quality of life. The time or the financial freedom to go on holiday, to take it easy, to retire. “Good old Boris” say his dwindling supporters “He’s a bit of a laugh” Oh, and we’re laughing. Laughing till it hurts.

YSTRADGYNLAIS DISTRICT HERITAGE & LANGUAGE SOCIETY The latest interpretation panel commissioned by the Ystradgynlais District Heritage and Language Society outlines the early history of the Coronation Park, Ystradgynlais. It has recently been installed at the Park’s entrance. The 3’ by 2’ lectern style panel is located adjacent to the footbridge which crosses over the Ystradgynlais By-pass near Pengorof Surgery on the service road leading to the Park. The panel outlines the Park’s early history using bilingual text, maps and photographs and is the sixth such panel to be erected by the Society in the district. The other 5 being:1. Ynyscedwyn House on the footpath just off Wind Road leading to the Ystrad by-pass; 2. The Brecon Forest Tramroad near the Café Chameleon (Gough Arms), Heol Glantawe; 3. The Tick-Tock factory near the entrance to The Clockworks Public House; 4. Aircraft crashes in the Southern Brecon Beacons at the children’s playground, Dreflan, Cwmgiedd; 5. A copy of panel 4 in the carpark of the Dan yr Ogof Caves complex, Glyntawe. The Park was acquired by the Ystradgynlais Council from Col. F.R.D.A. Gough of Ynyscedwyn House in 1911, the Coronation Year of George V, who was Queen Elizabeth II ‘s grandfather. Prior to 1911 the area was mined for ironstone which was transferred to the Yniscedwyn Ironworks for processing. Over the years the area has been extended and landscaped to create an area where members of the community can enjoy walking and admiring the area’s natural beauty. The project was completed using Society funds with financial support received from Ystradgynlais Town Council and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. Thanks also to Jenny Hall, Paul Sambrook and Phil Wait of Trysor for their work in collating the information for the Panel and its design and to Matthew Thomas and his team for the installation.

AWARDS HONOUR FOR ABERCRAF DUO

A couple from Abercraf have been recognised for the work they have carried out to support the Brecon & District Credit Union. Michelle Mallalieu and Dean Roberts are known to many through their volunteering work in Ystradgynlais and the surrounding communities. The pair became volunteers for the Credit Union since 2010, and in 2017 they joined the Board of Trustees. Once every week Michelle and Dean make the 45 mile round trip from Abercraf to open the Brecon office. They also run two of the Union’s collection points at Ystradgynlais Library and Ysgol Y Cribarth, Abercraf. During the pandemic, they kept their services running, offering vital cash services to their users. Dean handles most of the IT based tasks for BDCU. Alongside the collection service in Ystradgynlais Library, they run a ‘Gadget Club’ - a drop-in session that helps users with phones, tablets, laptops, etc. These are often attended by elderly residents of a local supported living complex. Their volunteer work helps to improve both the numeracy of primary school children and the IT awareness of elderly residents. In recognition of their excellent and selfless work, the chair of BCDU, Jackie Bull, nominated them for the Trustee Award at the annual ‘Best of Brecon’ awards run by Brecon Town Council. She explained that they had not only helped the Credit Union set up and conduct their virtual meetings during the lockdowns, but just one example of their work was where they taught a library user to use a tablet, loaned to her by the library, to keep in touch with her husband, who had been admitted to a care home with dementia. With the help of the care home staff they were able to help her see and speak with her husband to offer some reprieve from the isolation of the lockdowns. Michelle and Dean both said how grateful they were to be nominated and to receive the award, and they have promised to keep their good work up in to the future, volunteering and helping others where they can. A while before the local elections I sent a photograph, by email, of the broken public seat opposite 69, Heol Tawe, Abercraf, to Ystradgynlais Council, reporting that it was rotten and badly vandalised and needed attention. Cllr Sara.Williams, picked up. About a month or so later I sent a photo of the vandalised public bench seat, again on Heol Tawe, but this time situated opposite the junction Hannoyedd and Heol Tawe which had two large bolts protruding upwards from the broken seat. I received an email from the Council to report the matter to the Powys Councillor for Abercraf, which I did by phone. Sadly both public seats, as of June 4th, are still needing attention. A. C. Loveless Dear Community Mag, Summer is here at last, with time to sit, relaxing in the garden sipping at a cool beer or glass of wine, enjoying the colourful flower border or flower pots at the edge of the lawn or patio. But hang on a minute, where are the butterflies and other buzzing pollinating insects? I remember they used to be plentiful. What has happened to them? A UK University published a report earlier this year finding that since the last 5 years the populations of all flying insects (mainly pollinators) in Wales has decreased by 55%! A lot of these pollinate our food crops and wild flowers. One of the biggest culprits is the amount and frequency of our use of pest, weed and fungal killers. It is interesting isn’t it, that since the 1950s when chemical spraying became more widely used, and at the time claimed to be the golden bullet for all our pests, weeds and diseases, their populations have continued to grow. So should we wonder why we are continuing to use them? Because of the accumulation of these chemicals in our soil, water and air, human health is affected, as well as our beneficial insects, flowering plants (weeds) and mycorrhiza or fungi. A good example is Roundup, a weed killer which was due to be banned 5 years ago because of the glyphosate in it, (a highly likely cancer-causing chemical) but the producers Bayer Monsanto lobbied hard and won the right to keep on selling it. It is the largest weed killer used globally. So what can we do? I suggest we stop reaching for the chemical sprays and turn to more organic natural means; let a small patch of lawn and its flowering weeds grow over the summer and cut it in mid-July, (the pollinators will feed on the nectar and live another day to hopefully pollinate our vegetable and fruit crops) grow a small corner of nettles in an out-of-the-way sunny spot, (ladybirds and lacewings are voracious predators of insect pests, Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Red Admiral and Comma pollinating butterflies, all will use nettles for nectar or larval food, they are becoming more scarce now). We can control the size of the nettle patch by constant mowing at the edge of the patch. There is a lot of information on the internet on how to garden without chemicals. So why do keep buying these chemical sprays that do not work in the long run and cause such harm? I would suggest this is due to the very clever and persuasive advertising by the Agri-chemical corporations who are relentlessly pursuing higher and higher profits. They are not concerned with our health or the health of our planet, although they would flatly deny this. So let’s all stop using these killer garden chemicals and bring back our ladybirds, butterflies, pollinating hover flies and lacewings. We can explain what we are doing to our neighbours so that they can hopefully join in the change to benefit our Welsh flying insects.

After an indifferent June with rain at times and a burst of unseasonably strong winds, on the whole the month still managed a fair deal of dry weather with some pleasant temperatures. Not quite a 'flaming June' but still a distinct taste of summer in the sunshine. For July, perhaps a similar vein developing with a mix of weather, the balance of which leaning toward drier conditions, although with the prospect of any warm to very warm temperatures sparking thunderstorm activity. With the second half of the month possibly offering the best of conditions, some lengthy spells of settled weather are potentially in the offing and with blue skies and quite balmy nights, the summer season can be pronounced as being in full swing. If high pressure can settled and bed-in long enough, a favourable July in the making with the month reflecting drier than average for the duration, and warmer than average. UNPAID CARERS IN POWYS CAN APPLY FOR £500 SUPPORT PAYMENT

Applications are open for the Unpaid Carers Financial Support Grant, with the county council urging all who might be eligible in Powys to get in touch. The £500 payments, funded by Welsh Government, are being made in recognition of the increased financial pressures many unpaid carers have experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to help with some of the additional costs they have incurred. Those applying to the county council must live in Powys. They must also: • Care for someone for at least 35 hours a week and have a low income • Be in receipt of Carer’s Allowance on 31 March 2022 or have been retrospectively awarded Carer’s Allowance for that date. Unpaid carers can apply online via Powys County Council’s website: Unpaid Carers Financial Support Payment If an unpaid carer needs help to apply, or any further information, they can call the council on 01597 826345 or email: reviews@powys.gov.uk The scheme will close to new applications at 5pm on Friday 15 July 2022.

Do I Need A Power Of Attorney? A power of attorney is a document that can be prepared in order to give someone the authority to act on your behalf. There are many different types of powers of attorney but the most commonly used now is the Lasting Power of Attorney. This can be very useful to have in case you become unwell or incapacitated in the future. You can choose one or more Attorneys who can manage your finances and make decisions for you if you can no longer make decisions for yourself. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. The Property and Affairs document allows your attorney to deal with your finances to include paying your bills, dealing with investments and selling your property. The Health and Welfare document allows the attorney to make decisions about your health and welfare generally and can include decisions such as what medical treatment you should receive or where you should live. This document also allows you to give authority to your attorney the power to give or refuse life sustaining treatment on your behalf, should you wish them to have that power. Once prepared the Lasting Power of Attorney must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. More and more people are preparing these documents while fit and well so that if they experience any ill health or are involved in an accident then they have the peace of mind of knowing that the people they wish to make decisions for them would have the legal authority to do so. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place can save the need for an expensive and lengthy application to the court for those close to you to be able to deal with your affairs in the event you became mentally incapable.
