Editor’s Foreword Finally, after all of the chest thumping and claims of being ‘world beating’ by the UK Government, Johnson and Co. have managed to top the charts at something. As I’m sure you will already be aware, that particular something is that we have the highest rate of deaths due to Covid-19 in the world. “Could you do any better?” I often hear indignant Tory voters say. Well, in short, yes. In fact, millions of us could have. The same millions of us that, apparently, saw the pandemic heading for us weeks before the government (despite them having access to the scientific data). The same millions that wondered aloud why our airlines were still operating. The same millions of us that knew instinctively that the virus would continue to spread in schools, and that our government was attempting to trade off human lives in lieu of the economy. This is a government that has followed, not led. Football clubs called time on their sports before the government ever mentioned it. Teacher unions called to close schools. Lockdowns came too late every time, without fail. There is no defence for this establishment. Their hubris, greed and contempt for ordinary people has cost tens of thousands of lives. In 1845 Friedrich Engels coined the term ‘Social Murder’, explaining “When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another such that death results, we call the deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call his deed murder. But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live — forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence — knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than of commission. But murder it remains.” The proof against them lies all around the world, in those countries put lives first and adopted a zero Covid policy from the moment they became aware of the disease. Is Britain the only country to suffer at the hands of its own greed? No, of course not. We are ‘Numero Uno’, though. A shining beacon of greed and contempt. The cost of saving what will surely become over 100,000 of our own citizens would have been nowhere near what we are going to spend on Trident, HS2 and the proliferation of warfare alone. The argument is won. There is no moral hiding place for capitalism. It is a killer of people and planet. It doesn’t have to be, and an alternative to what we have is not ‘communism’ (before the usual suspects rant in with their emails) – it is simply compassion. So tell me, voters and supporters for the regime in Downing Street, what exactly is your argument against compassion?

NEW HELPLINE LAUNCHED TO ADVISE PENSIONERS OF BENEFIT ENTITLEMENTS

A new helpline has been launched to help Neath Port Talbot residents who have reached the State Pension age to apply for Pension Credit and other benefits. Known as the Pension Credit Helpline, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Welfare Rights Unit has joined up with other partner organisations to help people to find out what benefits they are entitled to and how they can apply. Pension Credit is an additional payment that is made to people who have reached the State Pension age and have a low income. A person may still be eligible for Pension Credit even if they own their home, have substantial savings or receive another pension. Advisers will also be able to sign post people to other forms of support that they may be entitled to such as: • NHS costs (e.g. dental, opticians & travelling to hospital) • Heating bills • Rent • A free TV Licence • Council tax To speak to an adviser, residents can call the free helpline on 0800 112 4763, Monday to Thursday between 10am and 3pm. Councillor Peter Richards, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, said: “Many people who have reached State Pension age are missing out on benefits that can help with the cost of daily living.” “We are urging anyone who think they may be eligible to call the helpline to find out if they can claim Pension Credit or any other benefits that could increase their income.” The helpline is being delivered collaboratively between Neath Port Talbot Council’s Welfare Rights Unit, Age Cymru West Glamorgan, Care and Repair Western Bay, Swansea Carers Centre, Citizens Advice Swansea Neath Port Talbot and Swansea Council’s Welfare Rights Team.

NEW ACTIVE TRAVEL ROUTE ON WAY FOR NEATH

Neath Port Talbot Council has appointed a contractor to start work on the creation of a new Active Travel route between Neath and Tonna. The route will take users alongside the towpath from Bridge Street in Neath to a point next to the Calor Gas centre in Tonna.

Work on the new Active Travel route by contractors Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd, begins today, Monday January 18th . The route will be closed temporarily while the Welsh Government funded work goes ahead. By upgrading and creating new walking and cycling routes, the council plans to make Active Travel the “normal” way to make local journeys, improving air quality, promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing the attractiveness of local communities as places to live and work. Cllr Annette Wingrave, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development, said: “Active Travel journeys provide a large number of benefits from improving people’s health and wellbeing to helping to reduce carbon and improving our air quality. “This new route will be a further expansion of Neath Port Talbot’s growing Active Travel network and will help make journeys between Neath and Tonna on foot or by bicycle easier and safer for everyone, particularly for those who don’t currently walk or cycle often and for people who use mobility aids.”

RESIDENTS ASKED FOR VIEWS ON BUDGET PROPOSALS INCLUDING NO CUTS TO SERVICES

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet has given the go ahead for the council’s budget proposals for 2021/22 to go out to public consultation. Among the proposals are plans for no cuts to services for next year and an increase in just over 3.5% in money going to local schools. The council published its draft budget proposals for 2021/22 in a report that went to Cabinet on January 13th where the public consultation exercise – which goes on until February 12th this year – was approved. The report outlined an anticipated £3.235m shortfall for the coming financial year, together with draft proposals to close the gap. These include implementing measures to the value of £135,000 that were agreed last year, using £3.1m from general reserves and consulting on a suggested 3.75% Council Tax increase to balance the budget. Cllr Carol Clement Williams, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We are consulting on a 3.75% Council Tax increase but that will ensure we’ll have no new service cuts this year and there will be 3.52% extra for schools.” Explaining the way the council’s funding worked, Cllr Clement Williams said: “We get 25% from Council Tax but the majority of our funding, three quarters, comes from Welsh Government in an annual settlement.” She added: “We have had to adapt the way we deliver our services in light of Covid-19 and this is likely to continue in the coming months. The increase in the provisional Welsh Government settlement means that for the first time in more than 10 years we may be able to exclude proposals for service cuts in our budget proposals, but to do this we would still need a contribution from Council Tax. “This council has worked hard to keep the Council Tax increase to the lowest possible level, balanced against the need to provide the services that so many of our residents and businesses rely on.” The draft proposals would also see a continued investment in education next year, with provision for an increase in the delegated schools budget of £3.2m to £93.3m, a 3.52% increase. Charging for Residential and Nursing Home Care

When a person moves into residential or nursing care their assets, income and finances will be assessed to consider how much they must contribute towards their care, unless they are eligible for Continuing Healthcare Funding.

We advise on:

Capital Limit The capital limit for assessing contributions towards care fees is £50,000. This means that anyone residing in a care home who has assets over £50,000 will pay for their care in full until the value of those assets fall below this limit.

• Wills

Treatment of Properties Where there is a property which needs to be sold to fund care the local authority will take any outstanding care fees due upon sale of the property, although the first 12 weeks of the stay in the care home is disregarded. Where there is a spouse, elderly or dependent relatives remaining in the property then the property may be disregarded entirely.

• Buying and Selling a Property

Assessment of Income For those with assets under £50,000 their contribution towards care will be based on their income only.

• Probate Estate Administration & Trusts

Other considerations:- Attendance allowance- where a person is paying in full for their care they may still be able to claim attendance allowance, although this is not available once their assets fall below the capital limit and the local authority begins to fund their care. - Funeral Plans- this allows a person to arrange their funeral in advance to ensure both that their wishes are carried out and so that there are no concerns over payment for the funeral on death for their families. - Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)- many people requiring care will need assistance to manage their finances and/ or make decisions for them and an LPA allows them to appoint whoever they choose to act on their behalf. - Deputyship/ Court of Protection – where a person has lost capacity to decide who should manage their finances then an application may be needed to the Court for authority to manage their finances. Whereas February and March have seen some late winter activity over recent years, the potential for any lengthy spells of snow and ice look doubtful during these two months. Granted, there will be some cold snaps with wintry conditions, but for the most part, that's exactly what they will be; short runs of cold weather with any snow chiefly confined to higher ground. Whilst intermittently lower levels too will see some winter bite, that will generally be in the form of frost with for much of the time, the rain staying as rain. The Atlantic will keep affairs fairly fluid during February, so the month looks quite unsettled throughout. TY BANC CANAL GROUP We are a group formed a couple of years ago to promote and enhance the Neath Canal for the benefit of everyone. The short term aim is to have a linear path / cycle way from Glynneath to Neath and beyond along the towpath. We have exposed Abergarwed Uchaf and Isag lock and a grade 2 listed bridge. Also we have been awarded a grant for tools and training from Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm which is fantastic news for the group. This includes funding for activities promoting the care and use of the Neath Canal, including #KeepCanalTidy and #exploreneathcanal. It is our hope and aim to make the canal accessible to all, both human and wildlife, and provide opportunities for activities promoting wellbeing and to celebrate nature’s biodiversity while ensuring it’s preservation for future generations. The long term aim of the group is to open up the whole of the canal which still has a right to navigate. The 1791 Act remains in force today and remains a public right of navigation. Our group of volunteers generally meet on Thursdays and Saturdays in Abergarwed both days between 10.00 & 14.00. VACCINATION PROGRAMME IS A REAL As 2021 begins to unfold it may appear that little has changed as we are still in lockdown, Covid infection rates remain at alarming levels and the unprecedented pressure on our National Health Service continue. However, the great news is the much anticipated Covid vaccine has arrived here in Swansea Bay! The news offers genuine hope. After months of planning we wasted no time and are pleased to say the majority of frontline health and social care staff have already been vaccinated. Also, our vaccination teams have visited care homes in our area to vaccinate residents and staff – they were given priority as they are amongst the most vulnerable to this dreadful virus – and, with the help of all 49 GP surgeries in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot we hoped to have vaccinated all those aged 80 and over by the end of January. We have also opened three mass vaccination centres – in Margam Orangery, Bay Field Hospital on Fabian Way and Canolfan Gorseinon – to begin offering all the over 70s in our area vaccination by midFebruary. The vaccines are being given in order of a nationally agreed vulnerability criteria: 1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers 2. all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers 3. all those 75 years of age and over 4. all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals 5. all those 65 years of age and over 6. all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality (and carers) 7. all those 60 years of age and over 8. all those 55 years of age and over 9. all those 50 years of age and over

The key milestones for vaccination are: • Mid-February - care home residents and staff; frontline healthcare and social care workers; clinically extremely vulnerable people; all over 70s • Spring - People with an underlying health condition. All over-50s. • Autumn - all adults in Wales (including those aged 49 and under) Please DO NOT ring your GP surgery or hospital. When your turn comes you will be contacted directly with details. If you are unable to keep an appointment please let us know immediately so we can offer it to someone else and reschedule. And remember, the vaccination is free, so we will never ask you for any bank or financial details (beware of scammers.)

SHOT IN THE ARM FOR SWANSEA BAY Director of Public Health for Swansea Bay University Health Board, Dr Keith Reid, said: “This vaccination programme is a massive and complex undertaking for everyone involved. “I’d particularly like to thank our colleagues in local GP practices who didn’t hesitate to volunteer to take the vaccines into care homes and acted swiftly as soon as they had the supplies. “Residents can be reassured that everyone in the NHS and local councils are working together to ensure the Covid vaccinations are given to the most vulnerable members of our communities as quickly, conveniently and safely as possible.” Please remember that it takes 3-4 four weeks for it to become effective – so don’t skip out of the surgery and hug your nearest and dearest. It is important that you continued to obey the social distancing rules, wash your hands regularly and wear a face covering. And don’t worry, you cannot catch Covid-19 from the vaccine. If you start to display any signs of the virus – a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, and loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – please self-isolate immediately and call 01639 862757 to book a Covid test. We are, of course, dependant on others outside our area for the continued supply of vaccines, so any delays are out of our control but there will be enough for everyone. We would also like to remind all who qualify for an annual flu vaccination to have still have it. Dr Iestyn Davies, of Cwmtawe Medical Group in Clydach, said: “I consider myself extremely privileged to have been able to administer the first vaccination to one of our oldest patients, who gladly rolled his sleeve up and afterwards declared the quick and simple process as being painless.” Calling for patience from those still waiting he said: “I totally understand that so many of you are tired and weary and are desperate to be vaccinated, but please be patient, as it is a herculean task to get around everyone.” He added: “Please do not fall victim to false news and think that the vaccine is dangerous – even though it has been developed at an incredible pace it has passed all the necessary safety tests and is the best shot we have of defeating Covid-19.”

MORE THAN 60 HOMES BENEFIT FROM FREE CENTRAL HEATING SCHEME

More than 60 homes throughout Neath Port Talbot have now had a free central heating system installed thanks to the Warm Homes Fund. The Fund helps homeowners who do not already have an oil or gas central heating system, to lower the costs of their energy bills through heating their homes more efficiently. Homeowners who qualify for the Fund can have a free first time gas central heating system (boiler, radiators, pipework) installed, plus a range of energy saving measures such as loft insulation, draught proofing and low energy light bulbs. Since launching, the Neath Port Talbot Council managed scheme has funded more than £450,000 worth of installations and energy saving measures across the county borough. Homeowners do not have to pay anything towards the cost of the central heating system but the Fund cannot be used towards the cost of a gas connection to your property. Some households will be eligible for financial support towards a gas connection through the Fuel Poverty Network Extension Scheme. The team will be able guide you through the process. To be eligible for the fund, homeowners must: • Live in Neath Port Talbot and: 1. Be classed as a low income household 2. Or spend more than 10% of household income on energy 3. Or live in a low income area (check with the team to confirm if you live in a low income area) 4. Or be in receipt of certain benefits •

Not have an existing oil / gas or LPG central heating system (a boiler and radiators) Properties with a solid fuel central heating system will be eligible to apply for this grant.

• Must own your own property or privately rent (private landlords will be required to pay a 25% contribution towards the cost of the works) Councillor Peter Richards, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, said: “We believe that everyone deserves to live in a warm home and we are fully committed to ensuring people are able to afford the energy they need. “Many of the homeowners we have helped have had their electric heaters or coal fired boilers replaced with new energy efficient central heating systems, saving them over a thousand pound a year on heating costs.” “I’d encourage anyone who thinks we could help to get in touch – and for residents to think of any friends or family members who could benefit from the Warm Homes Fund.” The scheme is funded by the £150m Warm Homes Fund, which has been established by National Grid, and is administered by Community Investment Company, Affordable Warmth Solutions, to support local authorities to address some of the issues affecting fuel poor households. STAYING ACTIVE IN YOUR HOME

As Lockdown in Wales puts an even greater emphasis on the isolation and wellbeing of older people, the Goldies Cymru Charity is increasing its online content to include gentle exercise at home. Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Heléna Herklots CBE, said: “Keeping active is really important for older people’s well-being and helps them to stay healthy and independent. But the pandemic has meant that many of the usual opportunities for older people to keep active have been lost. “So I’m really pleased to see that Goldies Cymru is working in partnership with NHS Wales to deliver a series of gentle chair-based exercise sessions that will help older people to get moving safely at home throughout the Winter weeks ahead.” When the Goldies Cymru Charity were forced by Covid to cancel all of their daytime sessions across South Wales last March they then introduced online sessions through Facebook and YouTube. These then developed to become twice weekly with Tuesday sessions taken by Rachel Parry and Thursdays with Cheryl Davies. Rachel and Cheryl have both worked for the Charity for a number of years taking regular daytime sessions. With Cheryl’s Thursday session based on the popular Goldies format of singing with well-loved popular songs and onscreen words, the Tuesday 11am sessions led by Rachel have developed into a more magazine-style format. Rachel said: “We have had a fantastic response from our older folk and we now try to feature a different subject each Tuesday. “The chair-based exercises encourage people to stretch as well as sing and we hope to develop these in the weeks ahead. “Our Bollywood sessions have been extremely popular and next week Sarita Sood will again be teaching us some lovely simple Bollywood dance moves which will be inserted into our Tuesday session by video. “Line Dancing has always been a very popular part of Goldies sessions and we will be introducing more of those in the future using videos that were taken before Lockdown at our hugely popular Rhydypennau weekly Goldies session, led by Sue Thomas.” www.goldieslive.com is easy to access and is also freely available on YouTube and through Facebook. Goldies Founder, Grenville Jones, added; “When we were forced to cancel our live Goldies sessions last year this meant that our older folk could not come to us to enjoy a session in their community room, church hall or Library. As they could not come to us, through the internet, we took Goldies into their homes and sofa-singing started!”

From time to time I come across customers who either have or are thinking about buying a memorial over the internet. Sometimes it appears that this is the kind of purchase designed for an internet sale. The prices quoted as headlines often seem ridiculously low and the seller will travel to any part of the UK and do all of the administration for you. Unfortunately experience shows this to be far from the reality for many customers all over the country. In my previous role as Development Officer for an industry body, I had to deal with a company who took deposits from 176 customers right across the UK. The deposits amounted to over £220,000! We were able to put all of these people in touch with each other so that they were able to fight for compensation. This is not to imply that every internet company would act this way, but it is certainly worth being aware that if a company has their base, say, in Lincolnshire, it is highly unlikely that they would want to visit your memorial to touch up some gilding or make some adjustment to the line. Complaints on situations such as this were dealt with frequently. It is always worth knowing who is making and installing your memorial. Is it the person who is selling you the memorial, or a sub-contractor? Remember – your contract is with the seller, not the subcontractor. Make sure the seller knows what they’re talking about. Is your memorials being made locally, or in some remote location and then transported to the grave? If the price is low, why? Is the memorial of the same size as existing memorials on that plot? Is the granite of sufficiently good quality? Lastly, local regulations often vary from cemetery to cemetery. Whenever I work in a new area I have to take some time to understand the requirements of each cemetery. Sadly I have to deal with burial authorities, and customers, whose memorials were either fixed against the local regulations or even refused entry to the cemetery on too many occasions! Remember – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

TRYSOR AND YSTALYFERA DEVELOPMENT TRUST Trysor is a village Charity Shop and was set up in 2018. From then it has gone from strength to strength. It relies on donations from the public and has been very lucky with what has been received. The charity shop was set up by and supports the activities of Ystalyfera Development Trust and its core aims. Since its establishment, Trysor has also donated to the following charities: • Catch • The Grove • NPT Hospital – Children’s Ward (Toys) • Singleton Hospital (nightware & toiletries) • The Dogs Trust – Blankets & Towels • Monkey Sanctuary - Blankets • Poppy Appeal • Primary School in Moriston – Christmas Tree decorations and Christmas jumpers • Three nursing homes in Brecon – Christmas trees, decorations, soft toys, hats, stockings, toiletries, dvds. Trysor has also: • Assisted asylum seekers and refugees donating clothing when needed • Made scrubs for the local community hospital This Christmas Ystalyfera Development Trust/ Trysor has worked with the local Foodbank (CATCH) on a large project, supplying ‘Christmas Dinner’ hampers for local residents. The hampers included a fresh Turkey, vegetables, stuffing, gravy and a desert. Rosalyn Davies, the Chair of YDT would like to give special thanks to Nigel from Valley Butchers Ystalyfera for his generous donations and the volunteers at CATCH to make this project possible. All the staff in the shop are volunteers and give their time freely. They are a friendly local bunch and often members of the public like to pop in for a chat with them.

We look forward to welcoming new and old customers back when the current lockdown is over.

Lamb Pastillas

If you’re a lover of Moroccan food these will really ring your bell! The Moroccan’s like to mix savoury and sweet in their cooking, but it’s not always to everyones taste. If you don’t like the idea of sugar on your pastie just leave it out - or better still make some with and some without - you never know, you might like it! This is a great way to use up your leftover lamb

INGREDIENTS

Approx 250g Roast Lamb, shredded 2 onions 4 cloves of garlic 1 tsp ground turmeric ½ tsp cumin seeds 60g sultanas olive oil 100g couscous 70g feta cheese 4 large sheets of filo pastry 1 tbsp flaked almonds icing sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon 4 tbsp natural yoghurt Chilli oil, to serve

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Prepare the couscous as usual (place in a bowl, cover with boiling water, cover and leave for 10 mins). Finely chop the onions, garlic and sultanas. Place a large frying pan over a medium heat, add about 1 tbsp olive oil and add these to the pan along with the turmeric and cumin seeds. Fry gently until soft and translucent (about 12 - 15 mins), making sure they don’t stick. Add the shredded lamb to the pan and cook for 4 or 5 minutes to heat through

and mix, take off the heat and set aside. Fluff up the couscous as usual and stir it into the lamb and onion mixture. Crumble up the feta cheese and stir this through too. Take out your sheets of filo pastry - these can dry out really quickly, so you need to be quite quick with this bit! Spread out the sheets on a clean surface and brush them liberally with olive oil. Divide the filling into four portions, placing each portion to each sheet. These can be presented in many ways, but the easiest I find is to imagine it as a crispy pancake roll. Spread out the filling along the edge, then roll and fold them up to about halfway. Fold in the sides, then finish rolling them up. Place these on a baking tray, brush with a little oil and crumble the almonds over the tops. Mix the icing sugar and cinnamon, put it into a sieve and tap it from a height to give them a light dusting. Place in the oven for about 25 minutes, or until they look golden and crisp. Serve with some green leaves and a dollop of natural yoghurt drizzled with chilli oil. Enjoy!

Dear Antonina, I am in a terrible panic and consumed with worry. Last week I had a letter to go to hospital to see a specialist for an ongoing problem I have had which is causing me a lot of discomfort. I have been waiting to see the consultant for over a year and was pleased that I finally got my appointment, especially the way things are at the moment. However I am horrified because the letter says I am required to do a blood test on the day - but I am really scared of needles. The last time I had blood taken was years ago as a teenager and although I knew it was for my own good, I had a panic attack and was sick straight after. Since then I have avoided anything to do with needles. I know this isnâ€™t logical and I feel really pathetic. Every time I think of the hospital appointment I start to feel sick and start sweating, my anxiety is going through the roof and even thinking of cancelling the appointment. Please help. Dear Maria

Firstly, I think it is very positive that you have an appointment to see a consultant. It must not be underestimated how being in discomfort for a long time can debilitate and effect your health and wellbeing. Hopefully going to the consultation is a step in the right direction to alleviate your problem. The issue you describe when thinking about needles is a common phobia and one which I come across in my practise regularly. As with other phobias, people experience varying degrees of fear resulting in very real physical symptoms. These can be nausea, anxiety and panic attacks to name a few. From my clinical experience I find that sadly people often suffer with a phobia for years before they finally get round to dealing with it until an event finally compels them to deal with it.

Please donâ€™t think you are pathetic. Phobias can be extremely distressing as well as self-limiting and it is no wonder that avoidance strategies are often employed to dodge the phobic response. As illogical as it may seem there is a perfect logic to it. You seem to be going into the fight and flight response because your mind thinks you are under attack. The teenage experience you

describe may well have left an imprint in your memory which triggers your mind into believing you are going to be attacked (and your body to responds as if you were). There are a number of products which you might want to help you on the day of your appointment: whether herbal ones like the Kalms Day or Bach Rescue Remedy or something prescribed by your GP. Rather than continuing to suffer, this could be a good time to take action to resolve the problem for the longer term. There are therapies which have proved successful in overcoming phobias. You could look up cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) which uses behavioural methodology techniques. Hypnotherapy is another method which has a long track record for dealing with phobias. MAKE RECYCLING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Healthy eating, keeping fit, reading more books… whatever you are tackling this January, we are asking you to also add ‘recycling’ to your list of New Year’s resolutions. 2021 might not have started the way we had all hoped, but by pledging to make some positives changes, such as recycling more, we can not only feel better and more in control of our own actions, but also make a big difference to our environment. “To many of us, recycling now comes naturally, we don’t even give it a second thought.” Says Cllr Heulwen Hulme, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste. “In fact, Welsh citizens are some of the best recyclers in the world, with Powys residents currently recycling around 64% of their waste. “However, new Welsh Government targets require us to do even better, and by 2025 we must reach a county-wide recycling rate of 70%. This means, that we all need to make a determined effort to reduce the amount of waste we throw away and make sure we recycle as much as possible. “By staying true to the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ mantra, we should all be able to stay on the right track and do our bit. Something positive to feel good about this new year.” A few simple tips to get you on your way to a more sustainable and rewarding lifestyle could be: Reduce: When food shopping, choose products that have less, or more sustainable, packaging such as loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packaged items. Reduce the amount of food waste you have by using up leftovers in homemade soups or other meals, there are some great recipes on www.lovefoodhatewaste.com Reuse: Opt for a reusable water bottle or coffee mug to help reduce the number of singleuse bottles or cups you get through. Consider buying items second-hand rather than new and selling or donating items you no longer use instead of throwing them out. Recycle: Make every effort to recycle as much of your household waste as possible. “Just imagine what a difference could be made to our recycling rates, and the environment, if we all added recycling to our New Year’s resolution list!”

SCHOOLS TO PLAY VITAL ROLE WHILE EDUCATION CONTINUES ONLINE Neath Port Talbot Council is reminding parents that while education in Wales will now continue with online learning until at least February half term unless coronavirus cases fall, its schools will remain open for children of critical workers and vulnerable learners. Also, the council’s special schools will remain open, subject to risk assessment, as will the council’s Learning Support Centres. These settings may need to modify their opening arrangements to respond to local circumstances. In a letter to parents and carers across Neath Port Talbot, the council’s Director of Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning, Aled Evans, said: “Schools remain safe settings. They operate under scrutinised risk assessments and apply robust control measures based on the four key behaviours of hand washing, social distancing, ventilation and wearing of face coverings. “These behaviours remain effective in reducing the spread of the new variant of Covid-19 if adhered to correctly. However, we also know education settings being open can contribute to wider social mixing and given infection rates remain high in NPT, we welcome the decision to migrate to online learning. “Whilst we all have a responsibility to stay at home wherever possible and adhere to the restrictions placed by Welsh Government to suppress infection rates, we also have a responsibility to ensure that learning continues to light even our darkest of days.” Neath Port Talbot schools which remain open will be delivering a mix of live lessons, recorded lessons, digital communication and sign-posting to learning resources and the council expects schools to contact pupils individually where this is deemed necessary and to discuss progress in learning with both pupils and parents/carers. In terms of online learning at home, parents and carers are being reminded their children’s teachers will still be guiding their learning and will want to help if parents and carers have questions, for example, about: • The best way to support their children’s learning • How to access help for their specific needs • What to do if you or your children have questions about their work • What to do if you or your children are feeling overwhelmed about school work • What to do if you do not have access to a suitable internet-connected device to access online learning activities from home (help is available to support families via your school or local authority). 63
