Itâ€™s been an unusual year for Phi Kappa Tau. Campuses closed, events were canceled, and houses were vacated. And yet, this year we hosted our first virtual Brotherhood Banquet. Apart but together, we gathered to celebrate the ongoing success of Phi Kappa Tau men, brothers who continually rise to the occasion no matter the circumstances. Their success is a result of the leadership skills they gain from Phi Tau programming. Like every other time we have been challenged, Phi Taus have raised the bar in the ways they support and empower one another through brotherhood. lumni Brothers around the world, I hope that you and your family are surviving these difficult times that all of us are facing. There have been days when my fraternity and my fraternity brothers are the best anchor I have to face the stormy times in which we live. While I have been serving in top leadership positions over the past decade, I have often been asked the question, “Why am I still doing that ‘fraternity thing’?” There is no easy answer. Some time ago I came across an article that raised a related question, “What should be your three top priorities in life?” The answer was “Faith, Family and Fellowship.” Our fraternity has certainly provided me with many fellowship opportunities over my 53 years, more than from any other affiliation I have had. That has been

great motivation for me to continue to offer my time, talent, and treasure to Phi Kappa Tau. I hope the life-long friendships you made as an undergraduate or as an alumni volunteer will encourage you to continue giving to Phi Kappa Tau. Life is a long zig zagging journey for all of us. There was a time during that journey to learn, a time to earn, and now a time to return the opportunities and wealth that have been bestowed on all of us. Our brotherhood experience as undergraduates provided four years that have, indeed, lasted a lifetime. We are truly “brothers, now and ever!” I hope that we can count on you to dig deep to help us out during these difficult times. Let’s go farther and further, together

Wes Fugate, Centre ’99, is Chairman of the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation. An active member since his undergraduate days, he has served as Dean of Leadership Academy, a National Councilor, and on numerous other committees. He currently lives in Chambersburg, PA, and serves as President of Wilson College.

he world has felt remarkably different since the COVID-19 pandemic began to appear. In many ways, it has caused me to stop and put things in perspective. Recently, as I was visiting a local business, a sign said, “We wear masks not for us but for you.” That phrase stuck with me, and I realized that there are many things in our lives that we do not for ourselves but for others. Fortunately, giving to the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation can both be fulfilling for you and for others. The contributions you give help the Fraternity to provide scholarships, more affordable housing, and leadership experiences that our undergraduates might not have been able to receive otherwise. Their lives are directly impacted by your generosity. Simply put, your gifts make a difference, one brother at a time. And yet, I happen to think that each month as I make a gift to our Foundation, that I am getting a little back, too. I get the sense of joy of knowing that I am helping others. I get to see young men develop leadership and interpersonal skills. I know that I am contributing in the development of future civic and economic leaders. For each of you that has made a gift to the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation in the past, thank you. Thank you for making a difference in not only

the lives of our young men, but I expect as well, in your own life. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Trustees and each of your undergraduates, we are deeply grateful for your support. As a college president, I know this next year will bring great challenges to many organizations, especially higher education and, as a result, the fraternal world. n July 26th, John Green, Nebraska Wesleyan ’60, entered the chapter eternal. John was a Phi Kappa Tau Hall of Fame member, Executive Director of both the Fraternity and Foundation, and one of the most outstanding leaders Phi Kappa Tau ever had. For his 60 years of membership, fraternity and dedication to Phi Tau were among John’s core values. Phi Kappa Tau would not be the same without him.

Born February 10, 1942 in McCook, Nebraska, John was an outstanding student leader at Wauneta High School before entering Nebraska Wesleyan University in the fall of 1959, where he pledged the Upsilon Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau along with Tom Cunningham, Nebraska Wesleyan ‘60. They both would go on to significantly impact the Fraternity throughout the rest of their lives. After a stint in the Navy, which began a long and distinguished career in the U. S. Navy Reserve, it was Tom Cunningham who suggested that John get involved in the national fraternity. He famously attended the 1966 National Convention at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island on his honeymoon with his new bride, Joan, a graduate of Drake University where she had been president of her Delta Gamma chapter. By 1968, John was a Domain Director and in 1970, he was elected to the National Council. In 1979, John was elected Vice President to National President Tom Cunningham, the first and only time in our history where members of the same pledge class served together as President and Vice President. John was installed as President at the Diamond Jubilee Convention in 1981, completing fifteen years on the National Council in 1985. During his time on the council, the Fraternity went from some of the most challenging times in our history to the completion of the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation’s record-setting capital campaign, which had been conceived by John and a small group of fraternity leaders. When the Fraternity Executive Director job opened in 1987, John became a candidate and when offered the job, decided to leave a long career in banking and the presidency of his family bank in Nebraska and move his family to Oxford, Ohio. He often said that the “job seeks the man” and when asked to take on a challenge he considered it. John took on Phi Tau’s top staff position with gusto and is particularly remembered for the innovative educational programs developed during that time including a National Leadership Academy, begun in 1988 and TEAM Discovery weekends. He was also instrumental in establishing the SeriousFun Children’s Network as Phi Kappa Tau’s national philanthropy. John showed real leadership not only in Phi Tau, but among our peer Greek organizations as an outspoken opponent of

hazing and substance abuse and was at the forefront of developing the risk management policies and insurance programs that have been critical to the Greek world. John left the fraternity staff for the opportunity to work with one of his other life-long passions, golf, in 1998. He was an investor in the start-up Indian Ridge golf course in Oxford and took on a new challenge of running the course. But when the opportunity came to return to the staff of the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation as Executive Director in 2001, he accepted the challenge and threw himself all in, providing staff leadership to a second successful capital campaign for the Foundation. Retiring for good from the staff in 2007, he remained active on the Foundation board, serving several terms through 2018. For more than half a century, John Green served in a leadership role in Phi Kappa Tau. He made countless friends and mentored an incalculable number of young men along the way, who all consider themselves better for having known John. And for all of his passion for Phi Kappa Tau, John was far from one-dimensional. He was a devoted family man, leaving his wife Joan, his son Matt and daughter Lee Anne and their families to carry on his legacy. And along with his family and his fraternity, he loved his community. He was a former president of the Oxford Rotary Club and was its Rotarian of the Year and he headed the boards of Maple Knolls of Cincinnati and the Knolls of Oxford retirement community where John and Joan made their home in recent years and hosted several Phi Tau alumni events. He was recognized for his contributions to Phi Tau with the Palm Award and as an inaugural member of the Hall of Fame, among many others. The John M. Green Golf Classic to raise funds for SeriousFun Children’s Network was begun in his honor in 2013. He was recognized for his contributions to the interfraternal community with the North American Interfraternity Conference Silver Medal in 2019, the first Phi Tau to receive this award. Boles, Centre ’14, recognized that to capitalize on the full potential of Phi Kappa Tau, the Fraternity needed committed, selfless leaders willing to support its mission. Brother Boles’ legacy encouraged generations of Phi Taus to lead by example through their philanthropic commitment to Phi Kappa Tau. The Ewing T. MEN OF DISTINCTION 2020 AWARD WINNERS

or the first time in history, the Phi Kappa Tau Brotherhood Banquet was held virtually. Due to the cancellation of Convention, brothers were not able to meet in person this year. The digital awards ceremony celebrated alumni, undergraduate, and volunteers who make this organization better by their hard work and dedication to the vision, mission, and creed of Phi Tau. As always, the young men of Phi Tau continue to astonish us, raising the bar for expectations and accomplishments year after year. Although we could not celebrate them in person, we recognize their success and look forward to when we can gather again.

MAXWELL AWARD DELTA TAU, CAL POLY-POMONA This trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding chapter in the country. The Roland Maxwell Trophy is the highest honor a Phi Kappa Tau chapter can receive. “Here at the Delta Tau chapter, we build men into leaders who make a positive impact on those around them,” the Delta Tau delegation said in their virtual presentation. Delta Tau’s strength begins at the very beginning – with recruitment. They recruit men who show a demonstrated interest in becoming men of exemplary character, and nothing less. Within the chapter, they build strong friendships as undergraduates and focus on fostering positive relationships with alumni, partially through individual outreach and partially through their biannual newsletter, The Kellogg, and an active social media presence. When the chapter celebrated its

Delta Tau chapter at Cal Poly-Pomona

62nd anniversary last year, over 150 alumni and their families were in attendance. At Cal Poly-Pomona, Delta Tau is the most diverse fraternity on campus. Every brother’s unique identity provides an opportunity for the brothers to learn and grow, and the variety of majors provides a chance for the chapter to help each other out with schoolwork. “What makes our fraternity experience great is our amazing sense of brotherhood, our respected chapter house, and our diversity,” they said. Unusual for a fraternity house, the Delta Tau house is completely paid off, which allows rent to be affordable and for the housing corporation to work on repairs and improvements every year. The chapter maintains an enriching environment by challenging all brothers to pursue their goals. Part of this is encouraging brothers to take on leadership roles with the Executive Board and across campus. The chapter represents 15 different clubs and organizations at Cal Poly-Pomona, one of the most prominent areas of which is IFC, where Delta Tau holds six of the 14 leadership positions.

By graduation of this year, 15% of brothers had professional internships and 80% had jobs secured. “Ethical leaderships begins on our board and stems out to our campus involvement and careers,” they said. Delta Tau takes their ethical leadership seriously. In the past year, four brothers were full-time staffers at The Painted Turtle, the local SeriousFun camp, in addition to the chapter’s volunteers every summer. Their “Red and Gold Week” event raised over $6,000 for SeriousFun camps, a five-day event with activities to raise money like a car wash, flag football, and table mural paintings. They also helped five Cal Poly-Pomona Sororities raise over $5,000 for their own philanthropic partnerships, including the Alzheimer’s Association, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Girl Scouts of America. “The learning never stops in our chapter, as we adapt and overcome any failures we experience,” Delta Tau concluded in their Maxwell presentation. WILLIAM H. SHIDELER AWARD BILL KOLPAK, ALABAMA ’16 This award is presented to the most outstanding senior in Phi Kappa Tau and is the highest undergraduate honor that the Fraternity bestows.

When Bill joined Phi Tau his freshmen year, he wasted no time making an impact. After seeing an opportunity for improved scholarship programming, he ran for Scholarship Chair. He was elected and implemented an aggressive study hours program to encourage members to plan study time into their days, while simultaneously developing a recognition program that encouraged all members who went above and beyond in their academic achievement. Spring of his freshman year, the chapter’s treasurer resigned. Bill was elected and promptly inherited $20,000 of debt. “Through rigorous work, planning and budgeting, I navigated the Fraternity’s financial situation to pay off these debts while still operating successfully and recruiting new members,” Kolpak said. This was a huge time commitment and took hours of meetings with advisors, the Executive Council, and staff members of the university and Phi Tau. Bill had difficult conversations with the chapter about where they were spending their money and how they were going to budget going forward. “By the time I had served in the role for a year, we had achieved a stable financial situation,” he said. Following a full term as treasurer, Bill ran for President to improve the fraternity in more ways than financial stability. He won and focused on long-term success by establishing a standards board, developing a more permanent alumni relations job, and creating a new annual charity that fostered the relationship between chapter brothers and their families during parents’ weekend. “As Treasurer, I was focused on rectifying problems of the past to ensure survival in the future,” he said, “As President, I worked

to establish a structure and relationships so we could grow and achieve new levels of success in the future.” Bill was active on campus outside of Phi Tau as a 4-year member of Alabama Action, an organization that assists the Tuscaloosa community through service projects at local schools. His senior year Bill became Program Director and coordinated 20 different projects across two schools. He also volunteered in an administrative role for the Alabama International Relations Club Model UN and served on the Alabama Student Government Association as an Associate Justice. Bill graduated last spring with a BS in Accounting and a 3.4 GPA. He now works in Atlanta. “I have worked with so many outstanding Phi Tau men in my chapter who have pushed me to lead, challenged my ideas and supported me in what I have done,” he said. Congratulations to Bill on this huge accomplishment. Go Far!

In Memory of John

Mike Gabhart and Rob Reese have known John since they were undergradutes in college. They remained close to their mentor as they grew professionally and started families. John impacted both of their lives profoundly and when he died, they looked for ways to memorialize his legacy. Mike and his wife, Heather

MIKE GABHART GEORGETOWN ’95 Mike Gabhart, Georgetown ’95, met John during his undergraduate days at Georgetown College, but it wasn’t until he moved to Oxford, OH after graduating that the two became close. “I came up and part of the process was being interviewed by the Executive Director.

John was retiring to start his golf course, but I went before we named the next Executive Director, so I had the privilege of interviewing with John M. Green for my first job out of college,” Mike said. John and his wife, Joan, regularly took in the Phi Tau staff members living in Oxford. “All of the consultants who moved to Oxford became a part of the Green extended family,” Mike said. “They were like second parents, they stepped right in and were happy to play that role, John and Joan would host Christmas parties. We would wear ridiculous costumes and exchange gifts. They were so accommodating, they wanted you to be a part of their family when you lived in Oxford. Every consultant that I’ve known that ever worked for John felt that way about John and Joan.” In the 24 years since they met, John had a monumental influence on Mike. “He was a really good role model for me. He always had a smile on his face, but he had expectations of you, and you didn’t want to let him down. His love of Phi Tau, family, and community, he was just a really good person to become close with after college as a mentor. He was someone I could try to emulate.” “He was such a genuine man. His smile, his sincerity, his passion – he was just so very unique,” Mike said about honoring John. He gave to the fund not only because of John’s influence on him, but due to his influence within Phi Tau at large. “John was a legend in the Fraternity. He was a living legend in Phi Tau and even to his last day Fraternity was incredibly important to him. I know whatever I give, it’s not enough.” ROB REESE KENT STATE ’87 Like Mike, Rob Reese, Kent State ’87, was also welcomed into the Green extended family. “I really got to know John when I joined staff in the summer of 1992. John was my first professional boss,” he said. “He played a big role in how I formed my ideas about working after college.” Rob worked on staff as the Director of Expansion for two years and reported to John. “He was a great boss, always smiling, always positive. He was a humble leader. John was the guy who put the flag out every morning and took it down every night,” he said. “One of the great things I learned from John is the benefit of addressing a problem right away. If something came to his attention, as soon as John knew about it, he would pick up the telephone and get involved.”

I watched dozens of young men beam after that and say ‘Oh this lapel pin? I got this from John Green.’”

During Rob’s last summer on staff, space needed to be made for new hires in the staff living apartments, so John opened his home to Rob. “I lived with John for three months, and those might have been the only three months of my life that I made my bed every morning. It just felt like something John would expect,” Rob laughed. ince we last circulated a magazine to our brotherhood (April 2020 – Dads of Distinction), our world finds itself in the midst of a global pandemic, a struggle for equality, and turbulent economic times. It is an understatement to say that these are challenging times for our communities, our host institutions, our chapters, and our members. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Phi Kappa Tau has been forced to become comfortable with uncertainty. That is no easy task. The first of these challenges was not having a firm grasp around how many campuses would re-open and under what operational limitations. We patiently awaited quotes for our Liability Insurance, an industry very uncomfortable with uncertainty. We evaluated models for financial solvency that would be empathetic to the needs of our membership. We made tough decisions around expenses to the organization including the furlough and the eventual removal of positions on staff. All in-person events had to be cancelled. At the local level, add in uncertainty regarding housing, and how our members could safely occupy properties. No matter the challenge laid before our Fraternity, I have continually found one thing to be constant: the support from brothers and family. Most of us have been isolated from our normal interactions. That said, we are finding a way to connect with those most important to us. I have heard dozens of stories from brothers who connected after decades of not hearing from each other. Be it a Zoom Happy Hour, a morning coffee chat on Slack, or a weekly Facetime call with a parent who constantly has to be reminded they are on mute, we are making time and connecting in meaningful ways. Don’t discount the impact you can have by simply lending an ear, encouraging a brother who is struggling, finding a way to bring laughter to a friend, or just simply telling someone you care. The support we receive and give in return matters, perhaps, more than ever. As you reflect on the relationships you have specifically with your Phi Kappa Tau brothers, consider how you might be in a position to give back to support this membership experience. Our collegiate members are dealing with unprecedented campus learning situations and financial hardship. If you can lend support, please consider doing so with a gift to your chapter or to the general fund of the Foundation. Especially in this time of uncertainty, we know that this membership and our bond of brotherhood matters. I believe that, and I know you do too. As my friend, mentor, and brother John Green was fond of saying – we should all count our blessings. He was so right… Be Well,
