he word “momentum” brings a different image to everyone’s mind. For some, it may be a graph on a boardroom presentation that indicates a rising level of corporate activity. For others, a speeding train or some other fastmoving vehicle may best depict the concept of energy thrusting forward, projecting progress. And for many, envisioning their favorite team marching down the field, on the precipice of a winning score, clearly having seized the moment and poised to embrace victory, becomes “momentum.” Considering momentum as it relates to our Fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau, it is worthy to note the progress of our brotherhood over the past year. Momentum, as the sportscasters say, is clearly on our side. In these pages, we examine the growth of our chapters across the country this academic year. We review the depth and breadth of our national programs that bring leadership development, service learning, and deep educational value to our campuses. We acknowledge the momentum created when a volunteer corps that spans the continent unites with the intent of creating an unparalleled fraternity experience for our collegians. Also within these pages, we express thanks to our generous contributors, whose gifts allow the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation to support Fraternity priorities and sustain the momentum that is key to our collective success. Ewing T. Boles Society The Boles Society recognizes alumni and friends whose annual gifts of $1,000 or more set the pace for our collective success. Their generosity is an inspiration; their commitment leaves a lasting impression. The group is named for Ewing T. Boles, Centre ’14, a founder of the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation in 1945 and chairman of its Board of Trustees until his death in 1992. In 1983, Boles was named an honorary founding father of the Fraternity. That same year, he helped pioneer Phi Kappa Tau’s $3-million campaign with his personal donation of $1 million—the single largest gift to a Fraternity at that time.

ver the past year, much of Phi Kappa Tau’s momentum has been demonstrated in its educational opportunities. New, innovative programs were held for the first time, established programs were enhanced, and more students were able to gain valuable experience through nationally endorsed curriculum. The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation works with donors to develop endowed funds to support national and regional programming and scholarships that provide valuable financial assistance to students. Leadership Academy
Undergraduates enhance individual leadership and PURPOSE character development while deeping their understanding of Fraternity values.

Held annually each summer.
In 2010, 30 up-and-coming leaders attended the BY THE program’s retreat-style pilot NUMBERS as an annual event. This year, two sessions will be held, with 80 undergraduates attending each.

Regional Conferences
Volunteer Development Institute
Resident Council presidents meet together to share ideas and hone leadership, organization, and goal-setting skills. Led by Phi Kappa Tau staff and volunteers.
Phi Kappa Tau’s officer institute: Undergraduates learn chapter management, including recruitment, Borradaile Challenge, Ritual and risk management.
Chapter-level volunteers (BOG, advisors, Housing Corporation) gather to discuss undergraduate advising and Fraternity resources and programs.
Campus-based proram: Undergraduates build brotherhood, strengthen communication and confront barriers within their chapter.
Held annually each winter.
Seven conferences are held annually each winter in different regions across the country.
The three-day conference of large- and small-group meetings, online certification training and assessment is held annually.
The two-day retreats are held as requested by a chapter or colony, at the group’s campus.
In its first year as a full program, 40 newly elected chapter presidents attended the weekend-long retreat, nearly a 40 percent growth over 2009’s pilot.
In 2010, 462 undergraduates were afforded the Regional Conference experience. The program has grown steadily over the last few years, requiring the addition of a seventh location in 2011.
The inaugural institute included 35 volunteers from across the nation.
Four chapters and two colonies hosted the program on their campus in 2010.

Founders Month of Service
Hole in the Wall Camp Experience
Members are encouraged to participate in service events each March to better understand and live the founding principles of democracy, integrity, equality, and brotherhood.
Members continue the Fraternity’s commitment to Paul Newman, Ohio ’43, by enriching the lives of terminally and seriously ill children at Newman’s camps.
Held annually each March, the Fraternity’s founding month.
Year-round fundraising activities and volunteer efforts at specific camps.
A record-setting second Founders Month of Service, members spent 6,228 hours volunteering in their communities and raised $46,221 for charity. That’s nearly twice as many hours and more than six times as many dollars raised in 2009.
In 2010, 134 Phi Taus volunteered at a camp and 16 members worked at a camp. That’s reportedly more than any other year.

The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation supports the Fraternity programs you see on pages 4 and 5 with general and specific gifts that donors allocate for certain programs. Particularly, Leadership Academy sponsorships are given by men and women who understand the importance of leadership development. Attending Leadership Academy makes a lasting impact on undergraduate students and their chapters. However, the experience does not come without a price. Each sponsorship is $550 and covers a student’s on-site expenses, including lodging, meals, materials, and special events.

Dick Meess Memorial Fund A loyal alumnus, Dick Meess, Bethany ’48, loved his alma mater and his Fraternity. In return, he was loved by many. When Meess entered Chapter Eternal in January 2010, his chapter brothers were compelled to start a memorial fund that would honor their brother in two ways: in a memorial at the Centennial Gardens at the Phi Kappa Tau Executive Offices and on the campus of Bethany College.
