One Brother’s Journey Success does not happen overnight… It is my honor to share with you the 2013 Annual Report: The Torch. Last year was full of accomplishments from our chapters, alumni and most of all, students. One terrific example is Brendon Vickery, Texas-Austin ’13, a re-founding father and past president of the Beta Alpha chapter. He graduated this year with a degree in business economics and already has a job at Morningstar, a highly regarded financial company in Chicago. Brendon took full advantage of the leadership-development opportunities that Phi Kappa Tau offers. He attended Presidents Academy, Regional Conferences, Leadership Academy and the 60th National Convention. As recognition for his success he was bestowed the 2012 Greg Hollen Colony President Award. Success does not happen overnight. It is spawned and nurtured by important Phi Kappa Tau programs, which are funded by Foundation dollars given by alumni and friends like you. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Trustees and staff, we thank all brothers, friends, parents and companies who continue to support the mission and vision of Phi Kappa Tau. Brendon is not alone. A Lifelong Commitment The mission of Phi Kappa Tau is to champion a lifelong commitment to brotherhood, leading, ethical leadership and exemplary character. The Foundation ENCOURAGES brothers, parents and friends to engage or re-engage in the life of Phi Kappa Tau. The Foundation SOLICITS philanthropic support from stakeholders through cash, stock, endowment and estate gifts to sustain Phi Kappa Tau at a high level. The Foundation STEWARDS donors and supporters by providing gratitude and demonstrating donors’ impact on the lives of young brothers. The Foundation GRANTS funds to support the Fraternity’s Men of Character Programs, academic scholarships, SeriousFun stipends, Chapter Educational Grants and other resources. The Foundation MANAGES investment portfolios, capital and annual campaigns, policies, volunteers and staff to ensure good governance.

By virtue of their position on the Fraternity National Council, the national president and national vice president also serve as Trustees. Foundation Volunteers Foundation volunteers are responsible for the development and maintenance of all fundraising programs, including the strategy and procedures that outline yearly assessment and tasks for specific Foundation initiatives. The BOLES TRUST was established through the estate of Honorary Founder Ewing T Boles, Centre ’14. Boles set up the original Phi Kappa Tau Educational Foundation in 1945 in Columbus, Ohio. In 1985, Boles donated a matching gift of $1 million for the Decision for Phi Kappa Tau Campaign, which was the largest gift to a fraternity foundation at the time. In his estate plan, he left the Foundation another gift of $3 million in a trust. His son E Thomas Boles, William & Mary ’39, a pediatric surgeon, has also been a loyal donor to the Foundation. The Boles Trust underwrites a significant portion of the programming that is provided by the Fraternity to chapters and brothers, including chapter services, Leadership Academy, Presidents Academy, Building Men of Character Retreats and Regional Conferences. In 2013, the Boles Trust contributed $250,000 to programming. The GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUND was established through gifts from donors who prefer to have their donations pooled with others to be used for the long-term health of the organization and its programs. The Foundation Board of Trustees has oversight of these funds and their utilization. In 2013, the General Endowment contributed $70,000 to programming and scholarships.

RESTRICTED/CHAPTER FUNDS are those gifts that a donor can either designate for the long term or short term. These gifts are designated for a specific purpose, program, chapter or other educational pursuit that is related to the Fraternity. Examples of these funds are Chapter Educational Grants, Named Scholarships and Leadership Endowments. In 2013, Restricted/Chapter Funds generated $291,000 in support of students, chapters and the SeriousFun Children’s Network.

The ELFERS/OMEGA SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established through the estate of Paul A Elfers, Wisconsin-Madison ’24. The Elfers Fund has grown to $700,000 and supports six scholarships per year. In 2013, the Elfers/Omega Fund distributed $21,000 in scholarships.

The BROTHERHOOD FUND is the annual campaign for unrestricted support. These dollars are limitless in their ability to help every member and enhance the Phi Kappa Tau experience. These unrestricted dollars directly support the general budget for all Men of Character Programs, the general scholarship fund, administrative expenses, chapterdevelopment programming, the Fraternity website, alumni programing and expansion. In 2013, the Brotherhood Fund raised $170,000 as operating income.

Men of Character Programs “Men of Character Programs helped me establish a greater understanding of our mission, values and purpose.” –Kyle W Rutledge, Oklahoma State ‘12 The Phi Kappa Tau Men of Character Programs form a greater and deeper understanding of Phi Kappa Tau values in order to build and sustain outstanding chapters, which help individual brothers grow as leaders. These programs are intended to enrich the member experience and create strong bonds of brotherhood within chapters, and across generations and geographies. The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation supports the Fraternity’s Men of Character Programs with general and specific gifts that donors allocate for certain programs. These program sponsorships are given by members and friends who understand the importance of leadership development.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY is the Fraternity’s premier, individualized leadership-development program for rising Phi Kappa Tau leaders. The four-day program is offered in three sessions of 40-60 students at summer camps across the country.
PRESIDENTS ACADEMY is designed for new presidents to gain deeper understanding of the responsibilities of a chapter president. Participants learn to lead effective chapter meetings, lead an effective Executive Council, create constructive relationships beyond the Resident Council and take positive action during times of challenge.
REGIONAL CONFERENCES are one-day conferences focused on preparing incoming officers to be strong and effective leaders and managers throughout the year, while providing additional members training to be more effective chapter leaders.
VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE is a threeday program designed for volunteers who work directly with chapters. This key institute is focused on working with today’s college students, as well as providing the volunteer with an intensive understanding of the national organization and all related policies.
BUILDING MEN OF CHARACTER RETREATS are two-day, chapter-focused programs that result in the chapter developing a vision and plan of action for positive change in the chapter.
GOOD TO GREAT RETREATS modeled after ideas for success presented in Jim Collins’ book, “Good to Great,” are four-hour programs designed to assist chapters with specific issues or needs. The programs focus on such topics as Recruiting Men of Character, Ritual, Executive Council transitions and risk management through a program called ResponseAbility.

The Foundation is committed to recognizing and providing financial assistance to individuals and chapters who are excelling in scholarship, leadership and service. The Foundation provides a wide array of scholarships, stipends and grants to members and chapters on a yearly basis. Academic Scholarships The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation provides academic scholarships to students pursing bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. Scholarship recipients are carefully chosen based upon their academic success, commitment to the ideals of Phi Kappa Tau and service to their campus, community and Fraternity. UIFI Scholarships The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation annually awards two Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) Scholarships, which cover tuition for this outstanding inter-greek leadership development program. UIFI is hosted by the North-American Interfraternity Conference. Honor Society Rebates The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of associate and Resident Council members who are selected to become members of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and/or Omicron Delta Kappa by providing reimbursements for initiation fees. SeriousFun Stipends The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation provides SeriousFun stipends to associate and Resident Council members who volunteer for a SeriousFun Children’s Network camp. Chapter Educational Grants Chapter Educational Grant Funds are accounts within the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation, which are set up to receive gifts and restrict them for the educational benefit of specific chapters.

It started over two decades ago when Paul Newman, Ohio ’43, created a place where children with serious illnesses could go to simply have fun. Today, that idea has grown to include 30 life-changing camps and programs serving over 58,000 children and families every year. In 2013, Phi Kappa Tau chapters raised $75,000 to directly benefit SeriousFun.

SeriousFun Partnership “The impact you can make in a camper’s life is remarkable. The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation affords brothers an opportunity to make that change in the lives of kids with serious illnesses through its SeriousFun Stipends initiative.” -Steven P Vaccaro, Baldwin Wallace ‘11 Phi Kappa Tau brothers travel to SeriousFun camps throughout the country and overseas to serve as positive male role models. Hundreds of men volunteer as cabin counselors, activity specialists, unit leaders and other camp staff during a week of summer. Parent Society Each year, Phi Kappa Tau parents not only support their sons’ chapters at the local level, but they also support their sons’ development through generous gifts to the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation. The Parents Society is an opportunity for members’ parents to play a lead role in sustaining the future of their sons’ Fraternity. It is at the absolute core of the Fraternity to engage the parents of members and encourage dialogue regarding the Fraternity. Leaving a Legacy Charles M Shaw (1926 - 2012) Charles M Shaw, UC Berkeley ’49, entered Chapter Eternal on August 12, 2012. Shaw is a man who many brothers did not have the fortune of knowing while alive, but he is one who many will never forget in his death. Shaw was a loyal donor to the Foundation for decades, a tradition he continued beyond his living days. With this transformative gift, his legacy of dedication is forever solidified. The details of his life are not well publicized, but what is known is truly remarkable. His life embodied a commitment to the responsibilities and values outlined in the creed of Phi Kappa Tau. It was while growing up in Southern California that a passion for geology and a mineral collection began. He followed that passion to college, but put his aspirations on hold to answer the call of duty and serve his country. In 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. Following his time in the service, he attended UC Berkeley, where he was initiated into Nu chapter and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Not yet done with academia, he joined the university’s Department of Geology and Geophysics to pursue a doctoral degree. During this time he received a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Oslo in Norway. He defended his doctorial thesis in 1956, which was, “An investigation of some chemical reactions involved in the genesis of metamorphic rocks.” Shaw went on to have a long career as a consulting geologist in the western United States and New Zealand. It is said he continued to collect minerals, especially ore specimens from unusual locales. His passions and loyalties are clearly evidenced through the benefactors in his will. In addition to the Foundation, he named his alma mater, The Nature Conservancy, Save the Redwoods and the Audubon Society. It is fitting that his last wishes help fulfill one of his earliest commitments. Through his generosity, the Foundation has established the Charles M Shaw Endowment Fund to be used for initiatives with the greatest need. Ten academic scholarships in 2014 will be awarded because of the fund. A veteran, a scholar, a philanthropist and of course, a Phi Tau. Charles M Shaw will be missed. 2013 THE TORCH

HERITAGE SOCIETY The Heritage Society was established to honor and recognize the Fraternity’s alumni and phriends who have made provisions for future generations of students through will bequests, life insurance, trusts and other planned gifts. Phi Tau brothers from all walks of life, with estates ranging from modest to complex, have
shared a common bond through the years: their abiding interest in assuring their Fraternity’s lasting fiscal strength. Through their determination to act on that interest, they establish a legacy of support, most commonly by including a charitable bequest in their will or other estate planning document. A bequest to Phi Kappa Tau may be made through a will or living trust in the form of cash, securities, real estate or other property. You should specify that the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation is to receive a certain amount or percentage of your estate or particular assets, or the remainder of your estate after providing for heirs. Ewing T Boles Society “No matter how much I do for Phi Kappa Tau, I can never repay it for all it has done for me.” — Ewing T Boles, Centre ‘14 Ewing T Boles, Centre ’14, envisioned Phi Kappa Tau’s future as a strong, vibrant fraternity that offered the very best in leadership opportunities for young men. He established the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation in 1945 and created a vehicle for alumni to make charitable gifts to ensure support for programming would always be available. In 1983, Boles was named an honorary founding father of the Fraternity, and that same year he helped pioneer Phi Kappa Tau’s $3 million campaign with his personal donation of $1 million. His gift was the single largest gift to a fraternity at that time. Because of his generosity, he was awarded the NorthAmerican Interfratenrity Conference Gold Medal of Distinction and the Phi Kappa Tau Executive Offices Building in Oxford, Ohio is named in his honor. Membership in the Ewing T Boles Society is awarded to donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually. The Ewing T Boles Society includes four leadership levels, which honor donors who give leadership gifts to the Foundation.
