FortisBC has completed emergency repairs to a leaking underground natural gas line that caused part of the Heritage neighbourhood to be evacuated the previous weekend, the company said in a Monday, March 16 email. In the email, the company said it received a call regarding a strong gas odour on Tabor Boulevard around
2:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 and dispatched a crew. Once arrived, the source of the leak was determined to be underground. Repairs to the leak were completed around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 15. After those repairs were complete, FortisBC staff “reactivated the impacted portion of the system, they restored service by visiting each affected home or business to turn gas back on at the meter and relighting all affected

On March 14, a Citizen reporter arrived at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Tabor Boulevard around 5:15 p.m. to see RCMP officers directing residents away from the area. Both the McDonald’s restaurant and Shell gas station at the intersection had
been closed, and the station had a sign taped to the door saying “closed due to emergency.” Around that same time, an emergency alert was sent to cell phones in the area. “Evacuate immediately if you are in the following area: North of Fifth Avenue to Zion Lutheran Church and East of Tabor Boulevard west of Voyager Drive,” the alert said.
