Pool progress: On time, on budget

Renovations at the Prince George Aquatic Centre are on time and on budget, with much of the demolition work complete, mayor and council heard from staff during its Monday, July 6 meeting. The pool closed on Jan. 1 for about two years and $37 million worth of renovations, with the downtown Canfor Leisure Pool absorbing much of its programming, staff and clientele for the duration of the work. The last update provided on construction was at the April 27 council meeting, where staff sought to address some residents’ concerns over an apparent lack of progress. During that meeting, council heard that after the pool closed and equipment was temporarily removed,
additional testing revealed more water damage, corrosion and mould not previously detected. To address these concerns, the city had to work with the firm managing construction to find savings to prevent the project from going over budget. A report written for Monday’s meeting by director of civic facilities and events Andy Beesley said that inside the building, tiles have been removed from the changerooms, washrooms, hot tub, leisure pool, pool deck and lifeguard station. As well, the hot tub handrails, flooring and finishes around columns and flooring epoxy have been removed, while preparation work has gone on to prepare for the installation of new tiles.
