Since 1949, the National Newspaper Awards have recognized excellence in newspaper and online journalism and for only the second time in the history of The Prince George Citizen the work of one of our own was judged to be the best by the NNA panel. Citizen managing editor Kennedy Gordon has won the Claude Ryan Award for Editorial Writing for his work in 2025. He received the award during a dinner gala on Friday, April 24 at the Delta Hotel in downtown Toronto. “Gordon’s work demonstrates why local newspapers are essential for democracy in Canada,” said one of the National Newspapers Awards judges. There were more than 900 entries in

Gordon joined the Citizen news team in May 2024 after more than three decades at daily newspapers in Ontario, most notably The Sudbury Star and The Peterborough Examiner. The Citizen entered three of Gordon’s editorials which focused on funding for seniors programs, the significance of the debate over funding local media, and misinformation and NIMBYism. • Grinches on Prince George city council yank seniors’ Christmas gift away, Dec. 18 • Debate about local media is proof of its importance to Prince George, June 13 • Open, clear communication vs. rumour, misinformation, March 7 “The Citizen was on the verge of closure two years ago, and now we’re winning national awards,” Gordon said. “Like the judges said, local newspapers still matter, and I’m proud to be part of this one.”
