Fall was in the air on Sept. 10, 2001, the first Monday night since Labour Day, when American motorcyclists Matthew Kolbinsky and Stephen McInerney drove into the darkness of the Woodpecker Rest Area near Hixon. Kolbinsky, then 25, was aboard a black BMW 1100 GS, while McInerney, then 26, rode a red BMW 650 Enduro. The friends, who met in high school at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, were on an epic road trip that ran from July 2001 to January 2002, up to Alaska and down to Chile. They began the day by arriving in Prince Rupert on a ferry from Alaska and rode more than 700 km east to Prince George. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
