A $4-billion pipeline expansion is expected to bring more than 1,300 local jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue to Prince George and Northern BC. Construction began earlier this month on the Sunrise Expansion Project, which will add pipeline segments to increase natural gas capacity and install additional compressor units at existing facilities. Three of the four compressor units will be powered by electricity, requiring the installation of new power lines. Enbridge’s Westcoast Pipeline is a 2,900-kilometre natural gas transmission system in British Columbia that

Construction is underway in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, including site clearing, road access work, foundation preparation for new equipment, and upgrades and modifications at existing compressor stations near Azouzetta Lake, Summit Lake and Hixon. The project is expected to create more than 1,200 jobs in Northern BC and 2,300 jobs province-wide during construction. Once complete, the expansion is expected to add 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity to the pipeline system. That additional capacity is expected to support the generation of two gigawatts of electricity, enough to power an estimated 1.5 million homes.
