Residents of Whitefish, Montana, are part of a growing population that places increasing demand on local healthcare services. In response to these challenges, Amber Primary Care seeks to design a new primary care clinic that expands access and strengthens community health. Located on the second floor of North Valley Hospital at 1600 Hospital Way, the clinic will focus on preventive care for patients of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. It will provide services such as wellness visits, physical examinations, vaccinations, and illness screenings. Serving as more than just a medical facility, the clinic will create a culture of care that fosters trust, reduces stress, and encourages long-term wellness.

Concept // The Hearth
For many patients, visiting a medical facility can be a stressful and uncertain time, making the need for warmth, comfort, and support essential to a positive healthcare experience. The concept of “the Hearth” embodies these qualities, creating an environment that offers reassurance, belonging, and care much like the hearth provides comfort and protection within a home. Amber Primary Care will serve as a central converging point for patients across Whitefish to come together in community and understanding, functioning as a resting point for patients and providers on varied and unique journeys.

Goals
A variety of seating in the Waiting Room promotes the goal of enhancing accessiblity, inclusivity, and empowerment by meeting the needs of all visitors.
The Staff Lounge and Wellness/Phone Room further the goal of supporting provider efficency and well-being by creating relaxing environments in which providers can recharge throughout the day.
Exam Rooms with natural light and a welcoming layout promote preventative care by creating a comfortable environment for patients to receive medical treatment.

Theories Concept
A smaller staff corridor width creates a positive affordance for patients, correctly indicating that the provider spaces are not intended for them to explore.
The onstage/offstage model provides one main path of circulation for patients, promoting the Salutogenic Model by enhancing comprehensibility and aiding in ease of navigation.
Planters in the Waiting Room and main patient corridor create meaningfulness through the Salutogenic Model by providing biophilic elements throughout the clinic.
A welcoming, home-like furniture arrangement in the Consultation Room emphasizes the comfortable spirit of belonging evoked by the concept of “the Hearth”.
The open Care Desk Area serves as a central “hearth” for practitioners within the clinic, as well as a flexible meeting space for the clinic’s personnel throughout the day.
Soft, calming curves in the entry and exam rooms beckon visitors inside and evoke feelings of warmth and safety in the clinic’s patients.

Welcome to Amber Primary Care
A warm, inviting reception space offers a variety of comfortable seating options, creating a calming and welcoming first impression for every visitor. Abundant natural light filters through the space, enhancing comfort and setting a serene tone from the moment guests arrive.

Traveling Caregiver’s Flex Office
While in “Office Mode,” the Traveling Caregiver’s office functions as a private office for an individual, with space for visitors or oneon-one meetings. If a traveling caregiver is not present within the clinic, the office converts to a flex meeting space for employees through a quick rearrangement of flexible furniture.

DINING AND COLLABORATION

The Staff Lounge offers a flexible, comfortable environment where staff can dine, unwind, collaborate, and securely store personal items. By placing these elements in close proximity, the space supports a smooth daily flow and fosters a sense of ease. The warm finishes and thoughtful layout are designed to enhance staff mood, reduce stress, and uplift their overall performance throughout the day.

Lalana Health Fleet Mobile
Healthcare
Location Toliara Province, Madagascar, Africa
Scope 3 ~600 SF Buses
Collaborative Project with Savanna Kennedy, Kate Wankelman, and Julia Yu
Approximately 59.44% of Madagascar’s population, or about 18.54 million people as of 2023 reside in rural areas of the country. Groups like the native Mahafaly and Antandroy peoples face significant healthcare challenges due to their isolation from major city centers. Madagascar’s decentralized healthcare system creates significant problems for these local governments like a lack of resources, healthcare staff, and medications, preventing many from receiving adequate medical care. Lalana Health Fleet strives to solve these problems by bringing high-quality healthcare directly to Madagascar’s residents in the form of three mobile health clinics--primary care, women’s health, and behavioral health.

Concept // Olo Nala, “People Forest”
Rooted in Olonala, which signifies the belief that for one to thrive, the other must also thrive; you cannot have healthy forests without healthy communities, and vice versa. This mobile clinic system applies Evidence-Based Design to foster healing through connection, adaptability, and place. Each unit draws from native ecology: the Baobab for grounded stability, Ravinala for renewal and dignity, and Chameleon for adaptability and emotional balance. Natural materials, biophilic color palettes, and soft, rhythmic lighting reduce stress and enhance well-being. Guided by research on environmental psychology and restorative design, these clinics transform healthcare delivery into an experience of belonging, bringing evidence-based healing, cultural resonance, and human connection to underserved communities.

An Explorer’s Retreat Residential
Client Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Location Breckenridge, CO
Scope 1,960 SF
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are a retired couple in their 60s who recently moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, from their longtime home in Nashville, Tennessee. With a son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons, the couple is looking to renovate their new home to accommodate visitors of all ages and abilities. Universal design principles and aging-in-place practices guide the design to create a fully accessible home fit for telling the story of the Smiths’ past, while equipping them with a comfortable, beautiful, and safe place to discover all that lies in store in their future.
Software and Skills AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, Hybrid Rendering

Concept // Exploration
Chosen to blend the Smiths’ love of traveling to South America with Breckenridge’s nature-oriented culture, the concept of “exploration” drives the design. Aesthetically, the design will utilize natural materials, an earthy color palette, natural light sources, and strong connections to outdoor spaces. A variety of shelves, niches, and display spaces allow guests to experience the idea of “exploring” the space and passions of the clients, while offering locations for the client to place pottery, art, and other items collected during their travels. The design will utilize natural stone and wood materials sourced in Breckenridge, prioritizing sustainability while calling back to the mountainous terrain the clients explore at their most beloved travel destinations.

Floor Plan
The floor plan prioritizes the idea of allowing guests to “discover” parts of the Smiths’ lives as they explore the space. The design focuses on creating subtle divisions in a primarily open plan, allowing visitors to “choose their path” and uncover the details that await.

Reading Nook
The first big discovery guests make lies at the reading nook. After passing through the living room, visitors will turn to see a twosided bookshelf filled with details that tell the Smiths’ story, including pottery from their travels, a collection of adventure books, and family portraits.

Kitchen Perspective
The home’s large kitchen space prioritizes accessibility for all, featuring a roll-under sink and cooktop. A central, 30” high counter provides the perfect prep space for Mr. and Mrs. Smith as they age, as well as for their grandkids to help in the kitchen when they visit on the weekends.

East Kitchen Wall Elevation
A side-opening oven with microwave puts cooking, baking, and reheating easily within reach for all, while a pot filler allows the homeowners to boil water without having to carry a heavy pot from the sink.
Metamorphosis Living Furniture Design
Scope Three Process Iterations and One Final Scale Model Collection
The Metamorphosis Living Furniture Collection is inspired by the patterns and textures found on butterfly wings. Through multiple process iterations, a custom chair, table, and bookshelf were refined to interpret the concept of the butterfly through Art Nouveau styles. Each iteration was drawn in AutoCAD on an 8’ x 8’ square to represent a standard piece of plywood that would be used in fabrication. Each iteration was also modeled in Aspire to view what pieces would look like when manufactured with a CNC router.
Software and Skills AutoCAD, Aspire, Model Building, Furniture Assembly

Concept // Butterflies
The Metamorphosis Living Collection is a home furniture collection inspired by the patterns of a butterfly and interpreted through Art Nouveau design elements. The collection will feature curvilinear lines and whimsical organic shapes, capturing the daring nature of the Art Nouveau style while communicating the lightness and beauty of the butterfly. Pieces will feature intricate patterning mimicking shapes found in the butterfly and other natural motifs. These patterns and shapes will create rhythm, evoking a mood of evolution as the butterfly transforms throughout its lifetime.
Process 1

Process 2

Process 3
For Process 3 of the collection, the joinery in the chair was reworked to allow it to fit together properly and turn the sides of the chair into compound curves. These curves emphasize the whimsical nature of the butterfly. Further, a decorative engraving was added to the top of the table to evoke the Art Nouveau style and lean into natural motifs.
Process 1 captured the general ideas intended with the collection’s concept, but did not blend the intended Art Nouveau elements harmoniously with the elements of the butterfly. The collection was reworked in Process 2 to emphasize looping shapes, symmetry, and rounded, sculptural elements. The pieces were also reworked to mimic the rounded, “butterfly wing” motif featured on the collection’s other pieces and leave more negative space, evoking more of the lightness and whimsy desired.
Process 1 AutoCAD File
The furniture pieces were drawn on AutoCAD on an 8' x 8' square to represent real life manufacturing of the pieces on a CNC router. Then, the items were scaled down on Rhino and laser cut to make scale models.

The Metamorphosis Living Collection
The collection’s concept was achieved successfully through the resulting pieces’ curvilinear lines, organic shapes, and light construction style. Rhythmic elements add movement and fluidity to the pieces, capturing the essence and whimsicality of the Art Nouveau style while evoking the patterning and shapes of the butterfly. The pieces’ scale also makes them harmonious as no one piece fights for dominance—they all work together to embody the concept. Dark wood construction also mimics typical Art Nouveau furniture norms, making the collection a strong tribute to the style and a perfect addition to a whimsical living room.
Multiple iterations of successful and unsuccessful pieces led to the Final Collection’s scale models, which were the most structurally sound and successful in concept.

Prior versions of the table featured skinnier legs, while the final version features flared feet to provide more stability.
Coordinating Pieces
An assortment of delicate, Art Nouveau-inspired furniture and finishes were chosen to compliment the collection's thin curves and natural motifs. Symmetrical patterns and wood pieces emphasize the Metamorphosis Collection's forms while carrying the concept throughout the rest of the living space.
