Welcome to our
magazine... Welcome to the September edition of our Gateway magazine. The market at Canary Wharf and the surrounding East London areas, continues to go from strength to strength. If confidence is the measure, then the latest announcement of the biggest, tallest, residential spire in the Western World due to complete in 2020 – which is only 4 year away – must show the investor’s confidence in the residential market. This new tower weighs in at 771ft high. The developers; the Chinese Greenland Group, say the launch confirms the Group’s confidence in the London Property Market and the City.
John Pring FNAEA (Honoured) & MARLA | Director
We are looking forward in the ‘20s, to be letting and selling in this new aspirational address. As predicted last month, September has started with a real bang! The phones have not stopped ringing with enquiries for both properties for sale and to rent. The proportion of homeowners has moved downwards and is now at its lowest level since 1986. This movement reflects the trend to rent rather than to buy. Renting is the occupation of choice for some people. The easing of the financial markets has enabled many First Time Buyers to take their first step on the housing ladder. The Council of Mortgage Lenders announced in the Summer a high proportion of mortgage lending to First Time Buyers, and this has continued. This reveals how the residential market has shown more resilience than many commentators feared following the brexit vote. For an updated Sales or Lettings valuation, to see your property in our October Gateway magazine or for further advice, please contact your local Fisks branch.

Located some 30 miles east of the City of London on the north bank of the Thames Estuary, the mainland portion of Castle Point Borough - which also encompasses Canvey Island - is primarily based around three historically separate settlements, which gradually merged during the 20th century. The residential areas are now said to have the highest proportion of owner occupancy in the country - which speaks volumes for the quality of life here!

Since making his big-screen debut more than 20 years ago, Matthew McConaughey has taken Hollywood by storm. This September, he has two films set for release and both are expected to win him numerous award nominations. Free State of Jones will be released on 30th September and Matthew will take the lead role. An American war film, it is inspired by the life of Newton Knight and his armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi, during the American Civil War. Kubo and the Two Strings is set for release on 9th September and Matthew voices Beetle. A 3D fantasy action film, it is produced by Laika for Focus Features and is directed by Travis Knight and written by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. The film stars numerous famous voices including Charlize Theron and Rooney Mara to name a few. The story is set in ancient Japan, where a young boy named Kubo cares for his sick mother. A spirit from the past turns Kubo’s life upside down by re-igniting an age-old vendetta. This soon causes havoc as gods and monsters chase Kubo who, in order to survive, must locate a magical suit of armour once worn by his late father, a legendary Samurai warrior.

What’s more, 2017 is also shaping up to be a pretty busy year for the 46-year old actor as in January, Sing will be released starring the voices of Matthew, Reece Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson. In a world populated by all animals, Sing follows a koala named Buster, who is voiced by Matthew, as he works to keep a theatre from closing down. One for all the family to enjoy together, all three of these films will be added to a long list of film credits that the American actor owns. Matthew first gained notice for his role in the comedy Dazed and Confused in 1993. He later appeared in films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Amistad and Contact in 1997. In the 2000’s, he became best known for starring in romantic comedies including The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fools Gold. In 2013, Matthew achieved huge success for portraying a cowboy diagnosed with AIDS in the biographical film Dallas Buyers Club. He’s had an extensive career but what does Matthew really think of Hollywood? “I love it. It’s silly to say that it is a world of false and stupid people. Hollywood is a pleasant place when you are hip to the game and you enjoy it for what it is really.” We think Matthew is just one star that Hollywood and the rest of the world won’t get bored of just yet! n
Canvey Island
Situated on the Thames Estuary some 30 miles from London, and with evidence of human activity dating back to Roman times, Canvey was systematically reclaimed during the 17th century by skilled Dutch engineers, many of whom subsequently settled here. To this day, around a third of the roads on the island have names of Dutch origin.

THE ORIGINAL ECO FASHION LABEL The brand that’s for women, by women and empowers women, is celebrating over 30 years of thoughtful design4
For the past 30 years, EILEEN FISHER has created beautifully, simple clothes designed to move with real life. Before both minimalism and sustainability became trends, Eileen Fisher had the vision of a company guided by a distinctive aesthetic and an on-going commitment to supporting women and making positive impact in the world. EILEEN FISHER was created and over 30 years later, they’re still going strong. In 1984, inspired by the lasting elegance and ease of the Japanese kimono, Eileen designed four simple shapes to debut at the boutique show. Three decades later, she has turned her initial $350 into $400 million without ever engaging investors and has more than 60 stores worldwide. Moreover, most importantly, she’s pioneered a socially conscious, eco-minded company while becoming an icon in the fashion industry for timeless design. Today, EILEEN FISHER supports women through the collection, simplifying life and inspiring women to express their personal style, as well as through social initiatives such as the Women’s Business Grant Program, created to empower women-owned businesses. Taking a leap towards its long-term intent of being a 100% sustainable brand, EILEEN FISHER has introduced its most eco-conscious collection. Reflecting on the past and innovating for the future, The Icons collection has proved to be popular amongst the public and we love every piece. For simple style and garments that can be worn anywhere, look no further. EILEEN FISHER is the answer to all your fashion problems and every wardrobe deserves an EILEEN FISHER piece. The collection recreates and reinvents six beloved pieces from Eileen’s original collections, such as The Box Top, created in the brand’s very first season, and The Coat, a fluidly draped beauty from 1991. Each piece is perfectly simple and captures the essence and heritage of the brand. Other pieces include The Cardigan and The Tank first created in 1997, The Maxi, a sophisticated cardigan created in 1997 that grazes the ankles, and The Dress, a quietly cut staple that flatters every woman. The Fisher Project has also been created, designed to work with the main EILEEN FISHER line, but offering edgier, bolder pieces with exaggerated fits and silhouettes that retain the brand’s philosophy of ease and simplicity. “Love is the essence of the brand, from how the clothes are made, to the culture of the company, to how they make you feel when worn,” said Eileen Fisher, Chief Creative Officer. “Love is infectious—it’s a great magnet that draws others in and inspires action. Love may not be all we need—a great dress, cashmere sweater, and the right top is also nice—but it’s all we need to strive for.” For more information and to shop the latest collection, head to www.eileenfisher.com n

A weekend in
Prague
September is the perfect time to discover new cities with milder temperatures and fewer crowds being the perfect recipe for cultural exploration4
With a population of over 1.2 million, Prague is the largest city in the Czech Republic as well as a cultural and historical hot spot. Nicknamed ‘The City of a Hundred Spires’ Prague is known for its Old Town Square, the heart of its historic core, with colourful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and the medieval Astronomical Clock. Another famous landmark is the pedestrian Charles Bridge, completed in 1402 and lined with 30 statues of saints. For your next weekend break, Prague deserves to be top of the list. After July and August – the hottest months of the year for Prague – the weather begins to cool down in September, when summer is merging into autumn. At this time of year, the average temperature for the city starts off at 16°C, created by highs of 21°C during the daytime. Autumn is lovely, cool and nearly tourist-free. Winter is equally a magnificent time to visit the European capital, when snowcapped Gothic spires are sights to savour. While Prague is now the capital of the Czech Republic, the story of what took place a quarter of a century ago is still traceable on its streets. Prague is divided into four romantic quarters – Hradcany (the castle district) and elegant Mala Strana on the west bank of the River Vltava, Nove Mesto (New Town) and Stare Mesto (Old Town) on the east. For history lovers, spend the morning in the Museum of Communism, which looks back at Prague’s four dark
decades. Walk on into Vaclavske namesti – the Nove Mesto plaza that was the core of the 1989 protests. Elsewhere in Wenceslas Square, Palac Rokoko is one of the antique shopping arcades, which made the plaza the height of glamour in the early 20th century. Explore its craft stores and cafés, and don’t miss the ornate Kino Lucerna – the arcade’s lovely art deco cinema. Take Vodickova southwest from the square, continuing through another plaza, Karlovo namesti. At its southern edge, take Resslova west to the river. Here, admire ‘The Dancing Building’, designed by Frank Gehry, where two towers lean into each other like ballroom dancers. Prague is home to many restaurants – from fine dining treats to quick pit stops. After an evening, spent enjoying cocktails and good food awake the next morning for further cultural exploration. Head to Kampa, a riverside corner of Mala Strana, where the Museum Kampa salutes the fall of Communism. You’ve got to head to the Petrin Tower. At the top is a 64-metre kindred spirit of the Eiffel Tower, placed here in 1891. Its main offering is a wonderful citywide panorama. With direct flights from a number of UK airports, all that is left to do, is to choose one of the many hotels situated in the city… So what are you waiting for? n
