Welcome to our

magazine... Welcome to the November edition of our Gateway magazine. November; the month of two important anniversaries. The first; Bonfire Night and fireworks; the time for family and friends to enjoy a party. The second; on a more sombre note, is the National Remembrance to the dead in the World Wars and subsequent military actions.

John Pring FNAEA (Honoured) & MARLA | Director

With the conclusion of these events, begins the run-up to Christmas, although the shops and stores have for some time been marketing Father Christmas. In our offices, the talk of Christmas is banned until much closer to the actual holiday as we are all focussed on finding you the right home whether you be a buyer or tenant. This is always a busy time when we are working to get families into their new homes to enjoy the Christmas celebrations. In November, Benfleet Office is to be totally refurbished which will necessitate the temporary relocation of our staff to the Administration Offices on the 1st Floor. This refit starting on Monday 14th is programmed for 14 days. We will welcome you looking at our brand new office in early December. We will still all be here: same phone number, same email! If you are thinking of a break, why not consider one of the destinations highlighted in this edition, not normally offered by tour operators. For an updated Sales or Lettings valuation, to see your property in our December Gateway magazine or for further advice, please contact your local Fisks branch.

The MAN,The MYTH,

The LEGEND Famously known as The Rock, Dwayne Johnson has starred as a tooth fairy, an agent and now a legendary demi-god4

Set for release on 2nd December, Moana is a 3D adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and is Disney’s 56th animated feature film. The film follows Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho in the ancient Oceania in the South Pacific. A born navigator, Moana sets sail in search of a fabled island and during her journey, she teams up with her hero and legendary demi-god Maui, voiced by none other than Dwayne Johnson. Dwayne is famous for his ring name, The Rock, and is a Canadian-American actor and semi-retired professional wrestler. During his school years, Dwayne was a football player but eventually followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Peter Maivia and father, Rocky Johnson, to become a professional wrestler. His grandmother, Lia Maivia, was also a professional wrestling promoter and several cousins are also professional wrestlers. Needless to say, wrestling is a family business. Professional wrestling opened many doors for Dwayne and his first leading film role was in The Scorpion King in 2002. For this role, he was reportedly paid US $5.5 million, a world record for an actor in his first starring role. He has since appeared in various films, and is especially known for his role as Luke Hobbs in The Fast and Furious franchise. What’s more, Dwayne also has his own successful production company, Seven Bucks Productions and co-

wrote his autobiography ‘The Rock Says...’ in 2000. The book debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for quite some time! 2017 looks to be another successful year for the 44year old actor as set for release in April is Fast 8, the 8th installment in the Fast and Furious film franchise. There’s no stopping Dwayne as he’s also starring in Baywatch, Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon and Jumanji, which will be released throughout 2017. He’s also got big plans for 2018 so fans of Dwayne will definitely be pleased. The 6 ft. 4 actor will never take his current position for granted however. “I have so much love and respect for the fans. I’ll never forget where I came from.” He may be a successful actor, but is there anything he misses about wrestling? “The interaction with the fans. Outside of the ring I loved it, too. But inside the ring, just that energy and feeding off that energy. There’s something so special about it. Every night was a different crowd and they gave me so much, and I’ll always love that and always miss that.” “No matter who you are, being kind is the easiest thing you can do…it’s nice to be important but more important to be nice.” Catch Dwayne in Moana from 2nd December n

Canvey Island

Situated on the Thames Estuary some 30 miles from London, and with evidence of human activity dating back to Roman times, Canvey was systematically reclaimed during the 17th century by skilled Dutch engineers, many of whom subsequently settled here. To this day, around a third of the roads on the island have names of Dutch origin.

UNUSUAL EUROPEAN BREAKS They may not pack the cultural punch of Europe’s most popular destinations or be quite as busy but this is exactly why you should head there4

Image credited: Nataliia Budianska/Shutterstock.com (Kotor)

Maybe you’re searching for that perfect winter weekend city break or possibly considering inspiration for 2017. Well look no further… KOTOR, MONTENEGRO The Montenegrin coast feels very different from neighbouring Croatia. Kotor is a gorgeous spot and for amazing views, climb up to the castle, watching down on the old town that is a UNESCO world heritage site. Explore the 12th-century St Tryphon cathedral and city walls and spend the afternoon taking boat trips to villages nearby. PULA, CROATIA Northern Croatia is an undiscovered gem, and Pula is the gateway to great coastal scenery and fine villages. A massive Roman amphitheatre dominates the town, which is one of the best-preserved monuments of the ancient world. There are several other Roman monuments but beautiful countryside paired with crystal blue waters along the rocky coast is what makes this a paradise. OHRID, MACEDONIA The spirit of Ohrid is magical and the town lies on a huge lake of the same name. Here you’ll find over 200 species of plant, fish and water creatures so for nature lovers this is the place to be. The charming old town of Ohrid is packed with piazzas, narrow winding lanes, numerous churches and several quaint hotels. A popular tourist spot is also the massive Samuel’s Fortress – named for the Bulgarian king who ruled in the 10th century.

ALESUND, NORWAY In recent years, the soaring success of Norwegian low-cost airlines has meant a lot of new routes have opened up into the country. Alesund is a beautiful town and home to Norway’s biggest fishing fleet so expect plenty to look at, plus endless opportunities to sample seafood, especially the local favourite, dried salt cod. CHANIA, CRETE This is one place, which is hardly undiscovered but certainly underrated. Chania has a fabulous old harbour built by the Venetians, who bought the city in the 13th century. The waterfront is the tourist favourite, but head into the narrow back streets for more authentic experiences. PRISTINA, KOSOVO This is one European capital that still lies under the tourist radar. There are some lovely narrow streets and traditional Turkic neighbourhoods to explore but this city is still finding its feet. With a big UN and EU presence, there are, inevitably, some swish bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. OLBIA, SARDINIA Olbia tends to get forgotten about and what visitors are missing is a fascinating historic centre with a pleasant laid-back atmosphere and some great cafes and restaurants. The one must-see is the museum on the site of the old harbour where an entire Roman fleet sank. Otherwise this is a town for strolling and eating n Image Credit: TTstudio/Shutterstock.com
