PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Dearall,

A warm welcome back to all CULS members! I hope you had a restful winter vacation and am pleased to presentyouwithCULS’LentTermcard2026.

Our Lent calendar is packed with both skills-focused careers workshops for aspiring solicitors and barristers, and exciting socials and welfare events to balancethestressofcareersandacademics.Moreover, we are delighted to be hosting several prestigious speakers,includingJusticeoftheSupremeCourt,the RtHonLordRichardsofCamberwell.

Wearemaintainingourfocusonprovidingmembers with a variety of opportunities to gain legal experience: our Pro Bono team is collaborating with the Law Corner to host training sessions on private, public,andhumanrightslawinpractice; submissions for the Lent edition of Per Incuriam magazine will open soon; and the Cuppers Moot is launching this termalongsidethefinalroundsoftheDeSmithMoot competition.

Forging connections remains a key part of our offering. We are excited to be partnering again with the Oxford Law Society for our new annual dinner tradition in London. Back in Cambridge, we are organising a Poker Night with CAMSIF/CUFIS and Marshall, building on our joint Run Club initiative. Our Annual Alumni Dinner will provide a space for students to meet highly distinguished alumni in the legal profession. Moreover, the new “Beyond Doctrine”seriesofourpodcast,CULSCAST,provides freshperspectivesfromCambridgelawacademics.

Inclusivity and accessibility remain core values. Alongside our Non-Law events and newsletter, ourD&Idepartmentisarrangingbothsocialand careers events, and inaugurating a new programmewithGROWMentoring.

Celebratingourmembers’achievementsishighly important to us. The upcoming Pro Bono Awards will highlight the social impact of members’ commitments. We are also excited to host a prizegiving ceremony with One Essex Court to recognise participants in our winter essaycompetition.

Finally, I wish to express my deepest gratitude and admiration to the CULS Main Committee, who have worked incredibly hard to make this termcard possible. It has been a pleasure to see ourteambringtheirwonderfulideastolife.

Iwouldalsoliketothankoursponsorsfortheir generous support. We are pleased to announce new collaborations with Legora, who are powering our flagship Access Scheme providing half-pricemembershipstobursarystudents,and our Welfare department which emphasises providingholisticsupportforourmembers.

DavidAnthonyStewartRichards,LordRichardsbecameaJustice oftheSupremeCourton3October2022.HestudiedLawat TrinityCollege,Cambridge.HewascalledtotheBarin1974and tookSilkin1992.WhilstattheBar,SirDavid’sprincipalareaof practicewascompanylawandcorporateinsolvency.

HewasappointedadeputyHighCourtJudgein2001,achairman oftheCompetitionAppealTribunalin2004andchairmanofthe InsolvencyRulesCommitteefrom2005to2015.Hewasthe ChancerySupervisingJudgefortheNorthernandNorthEastern CircuitsandVice–ChancelloroftheCountyPalatineofLancaster from2008to2011.

SirDavidwasappointedasaLordJusticeofAppealandmadea PrivyCounsellorin2015.HeretiredasaLordJusticeofAppeal, afterreachingthethenmandatoryretirementageof70,inJune 2021.Thereafter,hepractisedasanarbitratorandlegalexpert,as wellascontinuingtositintheCourtofAppealasaretiredJudge onaparttimebasis.HealsosatinappealstothePrivyCouncil. HewaselectedaBencherofLincoln’sInnin2000andTreasurerof theInnfor2020–21.HeservedasChairmanoftheLincoln’sInn FinanceandGeneralPurposesCommitteefrom2014to2019.He wasadirectoroftheInternationalInsolvencyInstitutefrom2015 to2019andco–chairofitsJudicialCommitteefrom2012to2019.
