The most recent Golf Digest World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses announcement that saw The Serapong improve four places from 59th to 55th was a welcome surprise. It was a truly proud moment for everyone at the Club, although it did catch us slightly off guard as the biannual rankings are normally released in January but were delayed until July because of the pandemic. We are grateful for the hard work that the entire SGC team puts in to maintain the Club's standards and their dedication to continually strive for improvement. It is not an easy assignment, but one we welcome with open arms. As I deliberate on the success of our Club over the past decade, I am reminded of the blood, sweat, tears and deep memories of all the long days and nights the team has delivered on a daily basis to provide Tournament-ready Conditions 365 days of the year. The enthusiasm, commitment, and planning efforts given to deliver the elevated conditioning Members enjoy today has become something special. We are now well known for it as part of the Sentosa Golf Club DNA, mirroring our global reputation. It makes me immensely proud to see the level of ownership and pride at every level within our team at the Club. However, and to be perfectly honest, what I struggle with today continues to be the lack of respect for the golf course amongst golfers. The number of bunkers not raked, uncountable ball marks on the greens at the end of each day not repaired is simply alarming. I am sure that we all treasure the team's efforts and, perhaps more importantly, the esteem and respect we have gained as a Club on the world's greatest stage becoming 55th amongst well over 38,000 golf courses in the world. It would be remiss of me not to mention what a challenge it will become to continue to maintain our position in the world if we do not all respect our golf courses and take care of them with the same passion as how they are prepared each and every morning for play. More importantly, we must also continue to respect the players playing behind us. I ask you all to make a pact to agree to keep up these standards together, to take care of our wonderful golf courses, and to show respect for all golfers. JOHNSTON PART OF LEADING CONFERENCE SGC General Manager and Director of Agronomy Andrew Johnston was among a collection of high-profile speakers at the inaugural Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) Danang Conference. The conference was part of a week-long golfing festival in Danang, Vietnam which ran alongside a 54-hole event on the Asian Development Tour, the Asian Tour’s feeder circuit. The three-day get-together focused on golf tourism recovery in the post-Covid era, sustainability strategies for course design, maintenance and operations and women in golf.

THIPPONG HOLDS NERVE IN INTERNATIONAL SERIES Nitithorn Thippong claimed his second win of 2022 with a one-shot win in the inaugural International Series Singapore. The Thai player holed a 15-footer for par on the last to set a clubhouse target of 16-under and then had to endure a 40-minute lightning delay to see if Malaysian Gavin Green, Chinese-Taipei’s Chan ShihChang and Phachara Khongwatmai from Thailand could match him. GOLF CELEBRATES NATIONAL DAY The inaugural two-day 'Golf Celebrates National Day' took place in August, a new island-wide initiative by the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) to grow the game and make it as accessible as possible. It also benefited five local charities through the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility. The event was held across all golf clubs in Singapore with the Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen acting as the guest of honour. “Golf Celebrates National Day is one of SGA’s efforts in our mission to make golf accessible for the wider community. Why did you become a member at SGC? I played a lot of golf in my 20’s. When I started my private practice, I played less and switched to tennis instead. However, after 25 years, tennis injuries became more frequent, and it was a natural thing for me to return to my first love: Golf. There’s nowhere better than Sentosa.

Favourite thing to do in Singapore? Play golf at Sentosa. Well, actually, my relationship with golf is rather complicated. Some days, honestly, I think they call it golf because all the other four letter words have been taken.

Favourite thing about Golf? Ha! This isn't really a simple question for golfers. Another golf quote to sum up why, “Two things I take very seriously in life. My golf game and my relationship with God. Neither one is simple.”

MEMBER NEWS THE SERAPONG SCALES NEW HEIGHTS The Serapong has climbed four places to 55th spot in Golf Digest’s prestigious World’s 100 Greatest Golf courses 2022-23, its highest position since it was first featured in the 201617 rankings. This follows the release of Golf Digest’s ‘Best Golf Courses

in Every Country’ rankings last year, where The Serapong was named the number one golf course in Singapore for the second consecutive listing. Increased recognition comes after The Serapong underwent a major renovation in 2020. The changes

clearly left an impression with the assessors, and it was pleasing to receive such high praise. As well as being rewarded for its unique personality, The Serapong was commended for its outstanding ‘tournament-ready’ conditions.

SENTOSA SCOOPS LUXLIFE AWARD Sentosa Golf Club has been named ‘Golf Club of the year – Southeast Asia’ in the LUXlife Resorts and Retreats Awards 2022. Following the challenges and stresses posed by the Covid pandemic over the last couple of years, and the impact it has on the hospitality industry, the travel corridor has begun to re-open. SGA WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT SGC member Tan Chong Huat has been elected as the new Singapore Golf Association (SGA) President following its Annual General Meeting in June. Chong Huat takes over from Ross Tan, who has served two terms as SGA President since 2016.

Under Ross’ leadership, SGA has been consistently promoting golf participation and nurturing talent in Singapore. SGA achieved the men’s team and individual SEA Games Gold Medal in 2017 and 2019 respectively, as well as a women’s individual Silver Medal in 2022. SGA also boosted its engagement with the community through various programs and launching GOLF:SG, SGA’s first interactive e-magazine.

You know, if you compare our team on paper with other teams in other sport, you would have laughed us out of the building. But we gave it a hell of a go and we came mightily close to winning and upsetting one of the greatest golf teams of all time.” This time around Trevor Immelman, who played on two International sides, will lead the underdogs having been part of Els’ backroom team. The 42-year-old, who famously won The Masters in 2008, was officially

named as the skipper in April 2020 but his position was put in place as early as the Sunday night in Melbourne the previous year. “Our team was battered and bruised on that Sunday. But you know, as usual, we shook it off and had a great night. At the end of the night we all reconvened and were telling stories about the week, and the team just organically started talking about who they thought and wanted to be the next captain, and that was how it happened.” Immelman has since picked the European brains of the likes of Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley but he has insisted that he will do the job his way albeit with very open lines of communication. Immelman will likely have Adam Scott at his disposal, another player whose brains he has picked as to what has and hasn’t worked in previous years, with the Aussie perfectly placed given he’s played on the last nine International teams. Immelmen's leading players will be Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters Champion, who is set to make his fourth appearance at the Presidents Cup, and current Asian Tour Order of www.sentosagolf.com

Merit Champion, Joohyung Kim. The Korean will be making his debut at the Presidents Cup, having secured the Asian Tour's most prestigious title at Sentosa Golf Club back in January after a fourth place finish at the SMBC Singapore Open. He has since gone on to claim his first victory on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship. He will be joined by his fellow Korean, Sungjae Im, who was only one of two players on the International Team to land a singles victory in 2019. The Korean came away from Royal Melbourne with three and a half points and he'll be another who Immelmen will likely be leaning on for plenty of action and hopefully points. In Australia, the International Team were made up of eight different nationalities and this time around it looks like being something similar so Immelman will have Canada’s Mike Weir, Korea’s KJ Choi, Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas as his assistants for the visit to Quail Hollow. Davis Love III is a native of North Carolina – he was born in Charlotte where Quail Hollow is situated – and played in the very first Presidents 13

Cup in 1994, he was 30 at the time. For Love, a two-time Ryder Cup captain, this will be a first in the Presidents Cup. The players will all be familiar with Quail Hollow given that it’s been a staple host on the PGA Tour for years now and home to the Wells Fargo Championship. For the Presidents Cup the course will be rerouted so they can guarantee the players visiting the renowned ‘Green Mile’ stretch of holes. These would normally be played as holes 16-18 but, for this year, they will play then as 13-15. The three closing holes will then be 11, 10 and 9.

“It’s just really demanding,” explains Immelman. “I think it was a brilliant idea to put those three holes in the meat of the back nine. I 100 percent foresee a couple of those holes you can win with a par, no problem. It's going to be great stuff. I think the way the whole course sets up with, the drivable par 4s and par 5s that are reachable with water, it's going to be an amazing fan experience.”

TOMATO JAM

Method

Ingredients

Crush and blend the soft biscuit by hand or blender till fine crumbs.

In a heated pot or pan, add in oil, sweat the onion, cinnamon stick, star anise and tomato.

Add honey and simmer till almost dry before scooping it out to chill in a bowl.

Sprinkle sea salt to taste after the tomato jam cools down.

2 ripe bananas

Crack the egg and whisk it thoroughly in a bowl and set aside.

2 avocados

Dust the bananas with flour lightly, dip it into the bowl of egg wash and cover it with bread crumbs.

1 egg

Place the breaded bananas into air fryer till golden brown.

3 tablespoon olive oil

Blend avocados, olive oil, lemon or lime juice and milk (optional) in a blender until creamy.

GAME ON! S GEO Certified Status A Landmark Moment

ince 2018, Sentosa Golf Club has set out to create an environmentally sustainable golf property. We were the first golf club in the world to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative, and the first to commit to achieving carbon neutrality by 2022. We have been globally recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable golf clubs and have captured a number of significant awards. None come bigger than this latest honour, GEO Certified status, the most respected certification for golf. GEO Foundation is an international not-for-profit founded to advocate, support and reward sustainability in and through golf.

The organization is the only one in the world entirely dedicated to this mission, working collaboratively with groups and people in and around golf to provide strategy, programmes and credible recognition. Needless to say, achieving GEO Certified status is a momentous achievement, and one that we’re extremely proud of.

Passing the test In order to achieve GEO Certified status, we were required to meet an extensive list of criteria. An independent verifier was responsible for assessing the Club in three main areas: nature, resources, and community. As well as our native bee colonies and bird nesting boxes drawing favourable comments, our use of

biochar and seaweed extract to restore soil biology and help prevent turfgrass diseases and reduce fertiliser inputs, also received praise.

The use of resources was also put under the microscope. Being able to demonstrate how we are using water more efficiently was a crucial part of the process, as was showing how the Club has successfully reduced energy demand. For example, it was noted that as part of the course redesign, we were able to reduce areas of managed turf, which has lessened the need for mowing, irrigation and turf inputs. Meanwhile, our digesters, which grind down food and horticultural waste to reuse as fertiliser on the course, were described as an “impressive piece of technology”.

Our engagement with the local community has also helped the Club to achieve GEO Certified status. As well as our ONE SENTOSA community drive, developed to improve the whole island’s ecological footprint, the Club’s work in exploring the sequestration of carbon dioxide in the tropics was also highlighted, as was the volunteer program we have in place for tournament preparation, and our support of the ARC Children’s Centre. Brad Revill, the GEO accredited independent verifier, had some kind words for the Club, which we’d like to share: “It was fantastic to see a team aligned in their vision and collectively driving their commitment to the environment and sustainability, both internally and externally.

“Sentosa Golf Club is a model and source of inspiration for other clubs and facilities in the region” Points highlighted within the report will keep SGC busy in the coming weeks and months. For example, the Club plans to conduct a detailed wildlife survey in 2022/23. Meanwhile, we will continue to explore different ways of saving water and other valuable resources. Whilst some new projects are in their infancy, we can bring you news

of an exciting collaboration with adidas Golf. The partnership with the sportswear giant will see staff kitted out with sustainable clothing over the next couple of years. The Adidas Group has been consistently listed in the Top 10 of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2000, and we’re delighted to join forces with a brand that shares our commitment to these important issues.

THE LITTLE ISLAND WITH A BIG HISTORY This year, Sentosa is commemorating its 50th anniversary since the island was established as a leisure destination in 1972. As the Golden Jubilee celebrations get underway, take a walk down memory lane to explore Sentosa’s rich and colourful past.

Today, the island of Sentosa sits proudly as a multifaceted leisure destination. With sandy beaches, lush rainforests, unique theme parks, and a certain world-class golf club, the 500-hectare island has become a vibrant resort, loved by locals and tourists alike. These modern attractions, however, belie a long and rich heritage, for this is an island that has lived many lives. In the 1600s, the island was home to various coastal communities such as the Orang Laut, who made their living by fishing and selling commodities to passing vessels. During this time, it was known as Pulau Blakang Mati – which roughly translates to “Death from the Back Island" in Malay. Few today would associate the tranquil getaway of Sentosa with stories about piracy that surround the origins of the name. Although unconfirmed to this day, such tales only serve to amplify the island’s mysterious past.

A Bloody Past Far more is known about the island’s military history. Blakang Mati was recognised for its strategic potential in Britain’s defence strategy for Singapore. In the 1880s, Fort Siloso, Fort Connaught on top of SGC’s Pyramid (Tanjong holes 4 and 7) and other forts and batteries were built. Later, during World War II, the guns were turned northward to fire on Japanese targets on mainland Singapore. During the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), Pulau Blakang Mati was renamed Kashima. The Japanese military used the island to house a munitions logistics unit. When the British re-occupied Pulau Blakang Mati post World War II, Gurkhas and troops from across Malaya were among those based on the island in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, the British phased out the use of fixed coastal artillery defences, ending an era of forts and batteries on Pulau Blakang Mati.

Modern Sentosa The island’s evolution from military base to leisure resort took place gradually. The key moment came on 8 July 1963 when the Malaysia Agreement (signed between the governments of Malaya, Singapore, and the United Kingdom) saw the 658 acres of military land on Blakang Mati released to Singapore – but what would become of the land? An industrial island? A base for the newly formed Singapore Armed Forces? The debate would continue, until Albert Winsemius, a key economic adviser to Singapore, drew up plans to develop a holiday resort with Blakang Mati. His suggestion won over then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and in 1970, a naming contest was organised by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board. The contest saw five individuals submitting the name Sentosa (derived from a Malay adaption of the Sanskrit word santosha). Two years later, the agreement to turn the newly-minted Sentosa into a leisure island was made official.

HOW TO HIT THE PERFECT

APPROACH

There are few better feelings than splitting the fairway with a huge drive. True, it’s a huge advantage to hit a long ball, but most club golfers don’t average 300 yards plus off the tee. It means many of us will often face a pitch of some 80-100 yards with our third shot, especially on long par 4s. In this issue, SGC teaching professional, Trent Turner, shares his top tips on how to pitch it close – which is one of the quickest ways to lower your scores.

1 Set up Let’s start with the basics. A set-up that allows us to maintain our angles throughout the pitch is crucial. Ideally, you want to move the ball forward a fraction in your stance, which will prevent you from digging down too much and catching it heavy. Note how the butt end of my club and my hands are fractionally further forward than the clubhead so there’s just a little shaft lean. When pitching, I’d also encourage you to shift your weight and pressure ever so slightly onto the front foot, approximately 60 per cent. Those who struggle with pitching – and we’re talking about 30 to 100 yards here – play pitches too much like a mini version of their full swing. I want you to start thinking about pitching as an extension of how you chip. So, imagine a straight line running through your front foot, knee, hip and up into the shoulder – so you’re creating a ‘left side pivot’. This imaginary line allows you to rotate all your pressure around your front side. Remember, with pitch shorts, we’re not going sideto-side, as we tend to do more in the long game. Pitching is about finesse and distance control. My leg action is fairly ‘quiet’ throughout.

2 Finish The key is to make sure the hands are slightly ahead of the ball as you come into impact. The body should be rotating through the shot. We’re not looking to produce a big, powerful swing when pitching. For that reason, you should be finishing in this kind of position – more of a three-quarter finish with the hands out in front of you, as opposed to behind your back. You should look to finish with your chest facing towards the target.

3 Distance control One of the most common errors I see with pitching is not marrying the length of the backswing to the length of the follow-through. Here, I’ve gone half swing back to half swing through. You might want to try honing different clockface positions as a way of perfecting your distance control. One of the other advantages of using the clockface drill, is that it encourages you to keep accelerating. Being conscious of these positions will help you to keep that nice smooth, tempo throughout the swing.

SADOM KAEWKANJANA In the latest issue of 18 Holes With...we sat down with 2022 SMBC Singapore Open Champion, Sadom Kaewkanjana, to discuss his victory at Sentosa Golf Club, the investment into the Asian Tour, and what makes the LIV Golf Invitational so special. How did you get into playing golf? My father played golf, so I followed him when I was three years old, and from then on golf was my everyday life. Did you have an idol growing up? Tiger Woods was my idol, but I also looked up to Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat. Are you excited about the recent investment into the Asian Tour? I was excited as it was great to freshen up the Tour after the Covid-19 pandemic and play more tournaments. It is also great to compete against so many more good players. How important do you think this is for the development of golf in Asia? For me, the more tournaments we can play, the more experience there is to gain. Players need to improve and without the support it is hard to continue. What was it like to win the SMBC Singapore Open at SGC? Incredible. It was great to start this year with a big win. Winning the SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa is always the #1 goal for everyone in the field. Do you have a favourite hole on The Serapong? Hole 7 – the Par 5 that runs along the sea. I got a birdie in all 4 rounds. What has it been like to play in the LIV Golf Invitational? A lot of fun and challenging as there is always a strong field. It drives me to become better.

In your opinion, what has impressed you so far about each of the events? It has certainly been a new experience, but it is great to play a new format of golf. I love playing in a team as well. How much are you looking forward to the event in Bangkok later this year? I am looking forward to playing LIV – Bangkok. It will be comfortable playing in my home country as even though the venue is new it will feel like home. What are your goals for the remainder of 2022 and beyond? I want to stay in the Top 100 of the OWGR and win the Asian Tour Order of Merit. If you could pick a fourball from any players in the world, who would you choose? Kevin Na, Dustin Johnson, Talor Gooch. Who is the greatest golfer of all time? Tiger Woods.

What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever received? Thongchai Jaidee once told me to just try my best and enjoy it. What is your favourite club in the bag? Putter. Have you ever achieved a hole-in-one? Yes, at the All Thailand Golf Tour Tournament – Thongchai Jaidee Foundation 2019. How would you describe Sentosa Golf Club in three words? High-quality, challenging and beautiful. What is your favourite thing about Singapore? The Serapong at Sentosa Golf Club. If you weren’t a golfer, what other sport would you play? Football. I always enjoy playing in a team.
