Dear Pepperdine Parents and Family Members,
It is with great joy that I welcome you and your child to Pepperdine University as you embark together on this exciting voyage of knowledge, faith, and self-discovery. As a Christian institution, we know that education is about more than just academic achievement and advancement; it requires the nurturing of the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Pepperdine’s commitment to this belief sets us apart from other universities across the globe, and it is likely a major factor in your decision to entrust us with your greatest treasure. Our mission is to strengthen your children for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. And as the parents of three Seaver graduates, Joline and I know full well the joy and pain of watching our children both conquer obstacles and struggle to overcome the semester’s latest challenge. The unique perspectives of our children continue to help guide our family’s philanthropy as we seek to model Pepperdine’s motto “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
As the family of new students, your partnership and generosity make a tremendous impact on our provision of the best possible education and experience. Your commitment of time, talent, and treasure to Pepperdine will serve as an inspiration to others, and your child will develop and carry that sense of giving and gratitude long after they matriculate. In using this guide to settle your student into their new home, I challenge you to identify areas of interest for your family and then engage with us as an integral part of our Pepperdine family.
Welcome to Pepperdine.
Warmly,
Jim Gash President and CEO

Thank you for entrusting Seaver College with the opportunity to educate your child. We, the faculty, staff, and administrators of the institution, all recognize this as a mighty responsibility—one that requires the utmost care, compassion, and collaboration. Together, as a team, we are committed to partnering with you to help your student pursue their dreams and discover their unique sense of purpose. e.
On our campus, we prioritize developing lifelong learners who will use their talents to give back to the world around them. Whether it’s a research project in the Santa Monica Mountains, a semester abroad at one of our international campuses (we have seven!), or an inspirational discussion in a Great Books class, our liberal arts curriculum is meant to empower undergraduates as co-creators of knowledge. In giving your student the chance to learn by doing, by playing an active role in the educational process, we aim to turn their interests into passions and their passions into a fulfilling, Godhonoring vocation.
This educational mission rests atop a firm foundation of faith. At Seaver College we emphasize the development of the soul alongside the mind. As a result, our campus community is filled with opportunities for your child to learn more about Christ and begin serving a calling greater than their own. Here, your student will be prayed for, ministered to, and walked alongside as they take their first, independent, adult steps away from home.

The first year at Pepperdine will be an exciting, challenging, and transforming experience for both you and your student. Parents play a critical role in student adjustment, so it is important to be equipped with helpful advice and strategies you can use to be supportive.
Homesickness is a common challenge during the first year. Students indicate that it helps if family members keep in close contact. Another area of adjustment is having a roommate and all aspects of sharing the space—especially if the student is accustomed to having their own room. Students recommend that new students wait a couple of months before going home for the first time; Thanksgiving is suggested as a good first-visit goal—spending time on campus helps students connect with the Pepperdine community. Finally, going home again can be challenging because everyone has changed—the student, the family, friends, as well as the community.
Encourage your student to get involved in extracurricular activities to help them develop leadership and social skills. Listen with an open mind to your student’s concerns. The academic pace can be an adjustment, and it may be overwhelming at first. And although it is important to offer
your student advice, college is a time for your student to grow, so it is also necessary to allow your student to make their own choices.
Although it is easier to get around Los Angeles if you have a car, there are alternative ways to do so. If a student does not have a car, they are more likely to develop a strong connection to the Pepperdine University community. Parking is extremely limited due to the ongoing improvements on campus, but it is free. Students are also able to rent cars by the hour by contacting our Department of Public Safety.
The amount of spending money a student needs varies among students. Many things to do on campus or in the Los Angeles area do not cost additional money. Frequent expenses include: recreational activities, occasional meals out, membership dues ranging from $500 to $1,000 for Greek organizations, and some campus events.
Welcome to Pepperdine. We are truly glad you are here.
As both a Pepperdine alumna and the parent of a recent graduate, this community is personally meaningful to me. I understand both the excitement and the uncertainty that come with this season, and it is a privilege to help care for your student during their time here.
At Pepperdine, education extends beyond academics. We care deeply about who students are becoming — their character, their

relationships, and their sense of purpose. Much of that growth happens in everyday moments: living alongside peers, navigating challenges, learning responsibility, and discovering how to support others well.
Our Christian mission shapes the way we approach student life. Students are invited to engage questions of meaning, purpose, and faith through conversations, service, worship, and daily life on campus. Some students arrive with an established faith background, while for others, this may be entirely new. Wherever your student is starting from, we aim to provide a community where they are supported, challenged, and encouraged as they grow.
Community matters here. Through residence life, campus involvement, mentorship, and shared experiences, students are surrounded by people who seek to know them, support them, and help them navigate both the exciting and difficult parts of college life.
Our Student Affairs team partners with you in this important season. We are committed to your student’s well-being academically, personally, and spiritually, and we look forward to walking alongside them throughout their Pepperdine journey.
Warmly,
Sharon Beard (’94, MDR ’01) Interim Vice President for Student Affairs

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that protects the rights of students by defining who has access to student educational records. FERPA laws transfer ownership of the educational records directly to the student; therefore, parents have no inherent rights to view, change, or control a college student’s educational records.
In general, unless your student/s give you access to their student records (which can include academic and/or financial records), we will not be able to share any of their information with you. A student’s educational records can include registration information, class schedules, and grades. They also include a detailed record of all costs of attendance, miscellaneous charges, and any related financial assistance. Students and those
to whom they have granted access will be able to view, pay, and update student account information online through WaveNet’s Student Center.
In order to receive access to your student’s educational records, please ask your student to grant you guest access to their account. This is the only way that you will be able to access your student’s information including account balances, payments, refunds, financial assistance, and/or grades. Your student may designate you as a guest user and will be able to determine your level of access. We encourage you to speak directly to your student to set up access.

The online student account serves as the official student bill. The account will be updated automatically with every charge or credit posted to the student account. The amount due will be available by viewing the student account online through WaveNet and will reflect the charges, credits, amounts due, and specific due dates for each.
Students are responsible for viewing their student account online, noting the account balances due, and making the appropriate arrangements for payment to be received by the due date. If you as a parent wish to receive email notifications regarding the account activity, please have your student grant you guest access to their WaveNet account and sign you up for billing reminder emails. You may also ask your student to grant you access to Account Detail so that if you have any questions and wish to contact Student Accounts, we will be able to discuss the account with you.

DPS personnel provide 24-hour, year-round coverage. Public Safety personnel are responsible for proactive campus monitoring, emergency response coordination, and enforcement of University rules and regulations (including applicable sections of the California Vehicle Code). The department also maintains a fully operational Communications Center staffed 24/7 by Public Safety dispatchers, who coordinate communication between field personnel, outside emergency services, law enforcement agencies, and the campus community.
DPS operates an on-campus fire life safety division led by two fire captains and staffed by personnel certified in Wildland Firefighting. The division maintains two operational fire engines to support fire prevention, mitigation, and response efforts on the Malibu campus.
The department provides a wide range of services designed to promote a safe, accessible, and well-coordinated campus environment. The Office of Student Accessibility (OSA) supports students with accessibility needs in all aspects of their Pepperdine experience.
The University provides services and accommodations as mandated by the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Registering with the office is an interactive process, based on the student’s narrative and supporting documentation. Because each disability and the particular circumstance are unique, the OSA encourages all students with disabilities to contact them to talk about specific needs.
Once a student, forever a Wave! The Seaver College Alumni Office helps connect successful alumni with current students to offer guidance as they explore purposeful career paths. Through programs, events, and resources coordinated by this office and the Student Alumni Organization (SAO), Seaver students will be presented with a variety of opportunities to engage alumni in their fields of interest—building their professional network ahead of graduation and experiencing what it means to be an active member of our vibrant alumni community. Students interested in leveraging these opportunities should consider applying to join SAO, where they can build skills in event/program coordination and have special access to key alumni.

Brock House is where the president of Pepperdine University and his family live. The house is up on the hill where the big American flag flutters. Our University president is Jim Gash and his wife is Joline.

Cultural Arts Center, the classroom building between the Weisman Museum and Smothers Theatre.

Center for Communication and Business, which can be found just off of President Drive. It includes classrooms and offices, and offers food services for two of Seaver College’s largest majors, communication and business.

Chapel, a required Pepperdine student experience, welcomes students into our community. Exploring selected, central ideas of the Christian faith, the program seeks to inspire spiritual growth and set students on a path to a life grounded in love and enlivened by the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing. Chapel consists of four large gatherings each semester and a series of breakout groups.

The HAWC was named after Howard A. White, the fifth president of Pepperdine, hence the initials HAWC (C is for Center). It is a popular student hangout, open 24 hours a day during the regular school year. This building houses Student Activities.

The Hub for Spiritual Life engages the Pepperdine community with worship and spiritual growth opportunities. Its mission, rooted in Pepperdine’s heritage of faith, is to create and offer experiences that cultivate a vibrant and consistent spiritual life at the University.
Jerry’s Tree is named after Geraldyne Faries, wife of the late Judge McIntyre Faries. Both were benefactors of Pepperdine. It is a common meeting place located outside of the upstairs library entrance right before the stairs that lead to main campus.
