Message from the Dean Inspired by the University’s mission, Pepperdine Libraries serves our learning community by promoting exploration, discovery, and creativity. Pepperdine Libraries hosts three library locations in Malibu: Payson Library, Drescher Graduate Campus Library, and the Harnish Law Library; three libraries across Pepperdine’s Southern California graduate campuses: West Los Angeles Graduate Campus, Irvine Graduate Campus, and the Calabasas Campus; and libraries at each of our international program locations. Through our libraries, our patrons have access to a rich array of digital and analog resources, which support teaching, learning, and research in a multitude of disciplines. The work of our expert librarians and staff—and the services they provide—is integral to impacting student learning at Pepperdine. Throughout this publication, we’re delighted to share how we are making a positive impact in the lives of our students, equipping them to change the world. Sincerely, Mark S. Roosa, PhD Dean of Libraries Pepperdine University

Embracing Faith-Driven Purpose Faith is at the heart of our work at Pepperdine Libraries. We honor our Christian values in our services and resources, supporting our faculty and students as they strive to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence. Our vast collection of Christian writings offers spiritual inspiration from a multitude of believers who came before us. The Word of God is represented in multiple languages, with Bibles ranging from early printed editions to the cherished Saint John’s Bible—a modern fine art piece honoring the beauty of medieval handwritten manuscripts. Our team emphasizes biblical literacy by integrating scripture study into courses, public programs, and other library initiatives. The Churches of Christ Heritage Collection—featuring books, documents, photos, periodicals, and archives from the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement—reflects our University’s connection to Churches of Christ and serves as a valuable resource for Christian scholars worldwide. Through the Libraries’ Spiritual Formation Committee and our daily work, our librarians strive to follow Christ’s example by helping students grow in purpose, service, and leadership.

Bringing History Alive Pepperdine Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives showcases a variety of historically valuable items, including major collecting areas of rare books, University Archives, the Malibu Historical Collection, the Churches of Christ Heritage Collection, and film and television archives. Every year, faculty from the sciences to the humanities partner with our Special Collections librarians to incorporate these primary materials into their curriculum, giving students a rich, tactile learning experience that enables them to better understand the past. We collaborate with faculty to preserve rare books by identifying texts they wish to use in the classroom or for their research. At Payson’s Genesis Lab and in our graduate campus iLabs, history comes to life through emerging technologies. Students have explored fifth-century BC Athens through virtual reality and recreated historical artifacts, such as sculptures from ancient Western and Eastern empires, using 3D printers.

Accessing Global Knowledge We live in an age in which vast amounts of learning and research happen online. Pepperdine Libraries maintains a rich and robust portfolio of digital resources that are refined and updated annually, ensuring our students and faculty have access to materials typically found at other top-tier university libraries. Patrons can survey scores of electronic databases to search the tens of thousands of journals available to them as well as stream countless films, musical compositions, and performances. To make our content more readily available, we’ve digitized key analog materials and added them to Digital Collections, where scholars and students around the world can explore photographs, documents, films, and recordings.

Inspiring Discovery Students, faculty, and staff have access to a universe of information through Pepperdine Libraries. Our catalog serves as a gateway to the world. It consists of around two million items with another three billion items available via interlibrary loan. To make good use of these resources, we teach students how to become informed information consumers. Every year, around 5,000 students receive knowledge navigation training from our librarians, which all first-year students are required to attend. Students learn how to articulate and focus information needs, develop information-gathering strategies, search electronic and print databases, and evaluate sources of information. Our librarians teach students how to thoughtfully use artificial intelligence, formulate successful AI prompts and fine tune their results, and check their citations. Our staff also partners with faculty to develop course reserves, including scans of book chapters, articles, and other materials, available 24/7 to students via Pepperdine Canvas/Digital Campus. Every year, interlibrary loan staff fulfill thousands of requests for both Pepperdine patrons and other libraries.

Building and Sustaining a Learning Network
WASHINGTON, DC Our library is situated at the center of one of the most influential cities in the world and provides students with the opportunity to prepare for their career with a global mindset.
In addition to our primary library—Payson Library on the main Malibu campus—Pepperdine libraries are found across Southern California and at each of the University’s international campuses. Every facility operates on the same network, which enables Pepperdine students, faculty, alumni, and staff to access our services and carefully curated resources from anywhere in the world.
CALABASAS Our Calabasas library assists the students and faculty of Pepperdine’s Graziadio Business School, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, and the newly created College of Health Science.
MALIBU Serving all six of Pepperdine’s schools on the Malibu campus, Payson Library is home to Special Collections and Archives, the Genesis Lab makerspace, the Rushford Center for Research on Churches of Christ and the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement, an exhibit gallery, and an on-site Starbucks. The Drescher Graduate Campus Library houses the Drescher iLab makerspace and arguably has the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, Pepperdine’s Caruso School of Law students have 24-hour access to the Jerene Appleby Harnish Law Library.
WEST LOS ANGELES Supporting the needs of the Graziadio Business School and the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, our West Los Angeles facility includes an iLab with a one-button studio for recording videos and podcasts as well as an abundance of quiet study space.

Inviting Dialogue Each semester, Pepperdine Libraries hosts an assortment of events enjoyed by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Malibu community. These programs offer wide-ranging perspectives and encourage open dialogue, helping to make the library a vital space for community engagement. Past exhibitions have highlighted burgeoning artists, and lectures have featured speakers from a variety of backgrounds. We also support alumni involvement through our artist exhibitions and an author lecture series. Promoting community archiving is a priority. For example, the Libraries’ Preserving the History of South Los Angeles initiative celebrates the neighborhood where George Pepperdine College was founded in 1937 and provides a home for the memories of its community members.

Amplifying Scholarly Reach Pepperdine values faculty research, and to support such efforts, we share thousands of scholarly works on Digital Commons, our free, open-access repository, which is available to everyone worldwide. To further enhance open scholarly inquiry, Pepperdine Libraries annually provides open-access publishing stipends to faculty, which helps pay article processing fees and make their work freely accessible in respected, peer-reviewed journals. In addition to helping faculty find publishing avenues, our scholarly metrics team tracks Pepperdine scholarly publishing output and impact.
