THE CAMPAIGN FOR PEPPERDINE

Our Mission
Pepperdine is a Christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.

We as institutions of higher education must boldly and unashamedly reclaim our greater purpose, our most fundamental reason for existing: the cultivation of virtue in our students.
PRESIDENT JIM GASH USA Today Op-Ed

Building the World We Want to See

At Pepperdine University, our students are our greatest investment and most enduring contribution to the world. Their talents and ambitions inspire us to expand rigorous programs, faculty mentorship, and meaningful scholarship that prepare them to lead with character and courage. Your partnership advances their formation and strengthens the University’s academic excellence—so they may live, lead, and serve for greater purpose.
Through this comprehensive campaign, Pepperdine is mobilizing the philanthropic leadership necessary to elevate scholarship, expand access, and enhance our campuses. While significant progress has been made, the ambitions outlined here depend upon the generosity and leadership of our community.
Imagine the Future with Us
We see a generation rising to meet the demands of the day.
We see access and opportunities for people to study in transformative settings.
We see innovative research shaping solutions to the challenges we face.
We see generations of servant leaders advocating for the voiceless.
We see a community of Christians who love with compassion and conviction.
We see a divided world coming together.
Empowering Scholarly Excellence
Pepperdine’s commitment to academic excellence—grounded in the integration of faith and rigorous inquiry—defines who we are and what we pursue. Distinguished faculty, meaningful mentorship, and disciplined scholarship cultivate an environment where students engage deeply with ideas, challenge assumptions, and develop the intellectual grounding necessary to lead with clarity and conviction. Through high-impact learning and close faculty collaboration, students are prepared not only for professional success, but for lives of greater purpose.
Equipping an Engaged Community
In an increasingly fragmented and digital age, intellectual formation must include the capacity for thoughtful dialogue and principled disagreement. Pepperdine fosters a culture of belonging and mutual respect rooted in the dignity given to each of us by our Creator, where students learn to listen carefully, reason critically, and articulate their convictions with compassion and confidence. This academic community strengthens both mind and character.
Inspiring the Visionaries of Tomorrow
Pepperdine prepares students to think rigorously, serve faithfully, and lead responsibly across disciplines. From law and business to education, psychology, public policy, and the health sciences, our students emerge as innovative problem solvers shaped by scholarship and guided by purpose. Equipped with intellectual depth and moral clarity, they rise to meet the challenges of their time and contribute meaningfully to the common good.

Catherine Davis had yet to see a connection between two integral parts of her life until she came to Pepperdine.
In a Great Books class, she learned the term wu wei, often translated as “effortless action.” She reflected that while ice skating, studying, and learning are not effortless, the more you love something and devote yourself to it, the more it becomes part of who you are— and part of your purpose. At Pepperdine, she came to understand that her true purpose is rooted in learning.
“My true purpose is a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.”

COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCE
Pepperdine’s College of Health Science is poised to provide the next generation of healthcare providers a world-class education to meet the demands of the growing healthcare field. Launched in fall 2025, the College of Health Science focuses on degree programs in the fields of speech-language pathology and nursing. An extension of Pepperdine’s Christian mission, the academic programming integrates faith and learning and offers students a faith-based perspective of healthcare that embraces Jesus’ call to love our neighbor through compassion, selfless service, and exceptional care.
PEPPERDINE VALUE
Academic excellence requires development of the mind and spirit.

Private donors passionate about specific fields can directly support groundbreaking research and scholarship that lays the foundation for innovative solutions to society’s most urgent and pressing challenges.

PEPPERDINE VALUE
We are united in our pursuit of truth even when we disagree.
Because truth has nothing to fear from investigation, we view dialogue as a valuable process that deepens our understanding and fosters meaningful relationships.
Because truth has nothing to fear from investigation, differing viewpoints and ideas can coexist at Pepperdine. We believe that engaging in critical conversations, even when we disagree, ultimately makes us stronger and we seek to understand others, valuing relationships and mutuality over polarization and superiority. This commitment to civil discourse reflects our core values and mission grounded in our faith, which energizes us to build a gracious, unified community that emulates the generosity and hospitality of Christ. By embracing the tensions of differing beliefs, we trust that our shared values and common purpose are stronger than anything that seeks to divide us.
We cultivate an environment that promotes mutual respect and shared understanding. Pepperdine’s rich history of inviting guests from all sides of the ideological spectrum, including six United States Supreme Court justices, thought leaders such as Jonathan Haidt, and political figures such as former prime minister Liz Truss and activist Cornel West.
CAMPAIGN PRIORITY TWO:
Prepare the Whole Person
Develop the mind, body, and spirit of students to reach their full potential.
Because of their exposure to global crises and injustices, Gen Z is naturally bent toward making a difference. Despite the challenges they faced through their formative years, 44 percent of Gen Z strongly agree that advocating for the vulnerable is an important part of who they are. But while they are the most connected generation in history and possess vast knowledge, they often struggle to apply it effectively in their personal lives. They need support to turn their knowledge into wisdom within a nurturing community that provides practical mental and spiritual guidance.

HOW WE NURTURE THE MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL ADVANCEMENT OF STUDENTS:
RISE Institute
The Resilience-Informed Skills Education programs seek to build the physical, cognitive, social, life skills, service, and spiritual resilience of our students by providing them with frameworks that can be used to navigate life’s difficulties.
The Hub for Spiritual Life
The Hub for Spiritual Life engages the Pepperdine community through worship and spiritual care to cultivate a vibrant and consistent spiritual life at the University including weekly worship, community service, student-led ministries, bible studies, mentorship, pastoral care, and local church resources.
Pepperdine Worship Summit
This powerful annual event invites community members to experience God’s presence through praise. Led by world-renowned worship leaders, keynote speakers, and student ministries, the event positions Pepperdine as a hub of worship and Christian leadership.
Faith in Athletics
Pepperdine Athletics equips student-athletes to align their athletic pursuits with a higher purpose through spiritual exploration, expression, and growth. Student-athletes are actively involved in Athlete Chapel, student-led weekly small groups, and one-on-one discipleship with the athletics chaplain.

“Everything that has led me up until this point has been a God thing,” she explains. “When I started looking back, I realized that I never planned all the individual steps to get here, and I am just so grateful for His hand over my life.”

STUDENT STORY | Madison Johnson
Cultivate purpose and impact through a Pepperdine education.
Since our founding, our community has embraced the ethos that educating students on how to live is as crucial as teaching them how to make a living. We prepare young adults for the workforce and support mid-career professionals in their pursuit of higher learning. We nurture the values of service and generosity and cultivate a mindset centered on contributing rather than merely consuming.
Pepperdine Centers, Institutes, and Partnerships
Pepperdine’s centers and institutes carry out the mission of the University in creative ways that support and complement the work of our academic programs.
Institute for Diplomacy, Security, and Innovation

The Institute for Diplomacy, Security, and Innovation was established to bridge the gap between intellectual and policy ideas and decision making in a rapidly evolving global order. Under the leadership of Kiron Skinner, Pepperdine’s inaugural Taube Family Chair of International Relations and Politics, the institute achieves this goal through guiding priorities organized around the concepts of a new geography and American grand strategy that are specifically tailored to 21 st-century domestic and geopolitical realities. Since its inception, the institute has convened conferences on cybersecurity and national security, transatlantic security, China, and the Middle East. The institute has also hosted multiple Future of Israel convenings and plans to host conferences on the future of the Arab world, North Africa, Europe, and the Western Hemisphere.
Ken Starr Institute for Faith, Law, and Public Service
The Ken Starr Institute for Faith, Law, and Public Service cultivates a community of scholars dedicated to the pursuit of justice, upholding the rule of law, and serving the nation and the world with integrity and compassion through the lens of faith. Inspired and energized by the life and legacy of legal scholar, public servant, and former Caruso School of Law dean Ken Starr, the Ken Starr Institute enhances the components of the Pepperdine University mission for which Starr cared so deeply and reinforces the fundamental American values that contribute to the success of a flourishing society.
Pat and Shirley Boone Center for the Family
For nearly 30 years, Pepperdine University’s Boone Center for the Family has had a transformative impact on the relational and emotional health of individuals, couples, churches, Christian schools and universities, and other ministries. Programming such as Relationship IQ, RelateStrong, and RelateForward programs integrate sound, biblical theology and the best of psychology to empower people to live out healthy relationships in all spheres of life—transforming families, communities, churches, and workplaces into God’s intended design. Through Relationship IQ, each year hundreds of Seaver College students grow in their confidence and competence to live out healthy relationships with their peers, dating partners, parents, professors, and God.
Church Partnerships
Through partnerships with local churches, Pepperdine hosts three youth empowerment programs as well as Harbor, Pepperdine’s annual Bible lectures, featuring God-focused, life-changing programs and fellowship, hosted by the Office of Church Relations.

FOSTER LIFELONG LEARNING.
The Seaver College Career Center is rich with resources ripe for purposeful expansion. From resume writing to internship placement to alumni connections, students have 24/7 access to our teams. Students can immerse themselves in work environments where they can learn real-world, practical applications of their studies and take the right steps on their career journey. With more resources and personnel, we can create new pathways and partnerships for students to explore for their future.

Every decision we make starts with what is in the best interest of our students. We foster a campus community that provides a transformational quality of life. Our faculty and staff serve as mentors and role models who reflect the highest ethical standards. As they study to master the skills of their craft, students have personal access to professors in and out of the classroom.
We create thoughtful spaces—both the physical beauty and function of our campuses and the metaphorical space for deep conversation and humble pursuits—for students to do the most meaningful work of their lives.
CAMPAIGN PRIORITY THREE:
Make Pepperdine Possible
Enhance access to our community through scholarships and dedicated programming.
We recognize our responsibility to practice radical hospitality and generosity toward those who seek to be shaped by our distinct college experience. Guided by our motto derived from Matthew 10:8, “Freely ye received, freely give,” we believe it is our duty to extend God’s grace to every qualified and mission-driven student who hopes to attend Pepperdine regardless of their life circumstances or economic background.
ALUMNI ENDOWED STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Pepperdine University has established official Alumni Endowed Student Scholarship Funds for each of its six schools. These funds empower alumni to make a lasting impact—supporting student success and strengthening the Pepperdine community for generations to come.

ACCESS ENHANCEMENT FUND: CARUSO SCHOOL OF LAW
The Pepperdine Caruso Law community is rich in cultural, ethnic, political, and religious diversity, which has formed a strong culture of connection among our students, faculty, and staff. Led by our faith-based values, we believe that each person’s background, voice, and convictions enhance our community. Embracing people of all backgrounds and identities and enhancing the voices of our vast student body develops greater opportunities for service, helps our students find their purpose, and creates better leaders. We are committed to being a place where all belong.
The Access Enhancement Fund supports programming, curricula, recruitment, and other measures that enrich this community of belonging. The next decade will amplify this great work to make Caruso Law an ever better place for training the lawyers and leaders of tomorrow.

VETERANS AFFAIRS
Pepperdine is ranked the #53 Best College for Veterans by U.S. World News & Report. Right now, we are actively engaged in supporting more than 500 enrolled veterans, service members, and their dependents. Pepperdine is also an active participant in the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program), proudly offering tuition support (almost $3 million annually) to Yellow Ribbon-eligible students.
Unlike many private schools, Pepperdine does not limit or place quotas on the number of Yellow Ribbon-eligible students that can attend our schools at any one time, allowing all eligible students to have their tuition completely covered. We are deeply committed to providing quality services and resources that build the veteran community; engage alumni; and provide employment, community service, and mentorship opportunities for all military-connected students.

FIRST WAVE PROGRAM
We see the image of God in every person we encounter.
We believe God is best reflected in the character of Jesus Christ where His grace, mercy, and truth are evident. Every person is made in the image of God and worthy of our respect.
As a Christian university, we practice the first and greatest commandment and the second that is like it: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
At Pepperdine, the student is at the heart of the academic enterprise, and the University is dedicated to the academic success of its student-athletes to ensure that they are provided the tools to achieve their academic goals while pursuing their athletic dreams. At the core of this commitment is the belief that academic achievement is as vital as athletic prowess.
First-generation college students represent a remarkable and vital segment of our community. These students are not only a key part of our student body but also a source of inspiration and resilience. In an effort to better support and serve this exceptional group, the First Wave Program provides tailored resources and tools designed to help first-generation students excel and thrive throughout their academic journey at Seaver College as they forge new paths and redefine their possibilities.
HORIZON SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Across America, there are 400,000 children in the foster care system, with almost 50,000 right here in California. As they become adults, additional resources and support are necessary to help former foster care children attend university and graduate with a degree. The Horizon Scholars Program supports current and former foster youth students at all six Pepperdine schools in fulfilling their goals and dreams in higher education. Our dedicated professionals offer services that encourage students to become self-supporting, successful professionals, conscious community leaders, and role models for other young people.
CAMPAIGN PRIORITY FOUR:
Impact the World
Encourage students to experience new perspectives through global immersion.
Justice is a cornerstone of the Christian faith. From the Old and New Testaments, we witness the God of Justice setting things right. With a desire to build a community dedicated to serving the world, we intend to help students discover and use their resources and talents for the betterment of society. Through immersive experiences in our international programs, local outreach initiatives, and opportunities to embrace a spirit of service, we impart to students the understanding that true freedom comes with profound responsibility.
Freedom is both a right and a responsibility.
Our students can and will change the world. As they take their place in the world, we hope to impart to them the understanding that personal freedoms are best leveraged in service to others.
Our goal is to provide opportunities for our students to engage with faculty and global leaders who are confronting the world’s biggest challenges and produce graduates who are set on pursuing freedom and all forms of human flourishing.

SUDREAU GLOBAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE
Since 2007, Pepperdine faculty, staff, and students have dedicated their time, talent, and treasure to improving the rule of law and providing access to justice for thousands of imprisoned individuals worldwide. Through the Sudreau Global Justice Institute at the Caruso School of Law, students trained in legal procedures like plea bargaining travel to regions with urgent justice and human rights issues, including Africa, Central and South America, and Asia, to advocate for incarcerated individuals seeking due process. The institute’s initiatives not only transform lives but also advance global justice. Thanks to alumna Laure Sudreau’s (JD ’97) ongoing support, beginning with an $8 million endowment in 2017, Pepperdine has significantly impacted justice systems worldwide and gained recognition as a leading advocate for vulnerable populations.
PEPPERDINE VALUE

I’ve wanted to be a lawyer ever since I read Proverbs 31: 8–9, where it says speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. As a law student, my first client was a prisoner in Uganda and advocating for him showed me what a career of service is like.
RYAN SCHMIDT (JD ’25)

CENTER FOR FAITH AND THE COMMON GOOD
United in their shared interest in and passion for improving prison conditions and recidivism, Pepperdine president Jim Gash and Distinguished Professor of Social Sciences and director of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University Byron Johnson announced their partnership through the creation of the Center for Faith and the Common Good in March 2022. The center’s mission is to integrate key components of Johnson’s prolific research on the efficacy of faith-based organizations, criminal justice, and human flourishing while contributing to further studies and wider societal impact.
The center partners with faculty scholars from Pepperdine, Baylor, and other universities as they pursue collaborative research focused on social and behavioral services. The high-caliber research produced by the center aims to inform public policy initiatives and improve social outcomes to positively impact human flourishing. Building on Gash’s and Johnson’s previous work and expertise, the center is conducting a series of studies focused on prisons and the role of faith-based programs in offender rehabilitation, recidivism reduction, and correctional reform more generally.

WASHINGTON, DC, CAMPUS
Our presence in the nation’s capital serves as a bridge between our Malibu roots and the halls of power. The DC campus is the operational hub for the Master of Middle East Policy Studies program, placing our students less than 10 minutes from the White House and State Department, at the center of the policy debate and ensuring Pepperdine’s voice of reason is heard where it matters most.

THE NATION’S BEST INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
A remarkable 80 percent of Seaver College students study abroad, immersing themselves in local cultures while living and studying at the heart of vibrant cities. Pepperdine’s International Programs locations span continents, offering unique educational and cultural experiences around the globe. Students live together in exceptional accommodations—ranging from an 18th-century chateau, to a historic property steps away from a German castle, to an elegant Italian villa—allowing them to deeply engage with rich history and culture.
Courses are taught by Pepperdine faculty who seamlessly integrate the campus curriculum while incorporating unique local perspectives. The small class sizes and close-knit community foster strong bonds, often leading to lifelong friendships. Students participate in service projects, internships, and educational field trips to nearby countries, which enrich their learning experience. This blend of interactive education, cultural immersion, and personalized support creates a memorable and impactful experience for students, preparing them for a globalized world and life after college.
