Topics
English
We will begin the term by reviewing the 44 speed sounds that help us to read and spell with increasing accuracy. Reading lessons will focus on multiple readings of books to help us build our reading fluency and develop reading comprehension skills. We will continue to develop our speed and accuracy of letter formation in order to become more fluent writers. Our writing focus will be on generating ideas, sequencing information in the texts and using conjunctions to connect ideas within our writing.
Maths
Securing place value up to 100 is a key focus this term. Children will be able to partition numbers to 100 in different ways understand finding 1 or 10 ‘more’ or ‘lesson’ from any number to 100. This supports our subsequent learning on addition and subtraction where we develop efficient written and mental methods for problem solving whilst continuing to develop our fluent mental recall of addition and subtraction facts within 20. We will also learn properties of 2D and 3D shape, learning to classify and describe shapes by their different properties.
Science
We will investigate how everyday materials like wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper, and cardboard are suited for particular uses, and discover how the shapes of solid objects can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting, and stretching. We will also identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats.
French
For children who have chosen to learn French, we will be learning about nationalities using je suis, naming classroom objects and classroom instructions. We will review numbers 1-10 and learn up to 20. We will also learn to ask and say where you live and express our opinions.
Kiswahili
This term we will develop learners' ability to communicate confidently in everyday social situations. They will learn how to introduce themselves and others, talk about age and gender, and use appropriate expressions when meeting new people. Learners will also build their understanding of numbers by counting, expressing dates, and using numbers to describe people and objects. In addition, they will practise asking and answering a range of questions using common Swahili question words such as nani (who), nini (what), wapi (where), kwa nini (why), lini (when), vipi (how), aje (how come), and ngapi (how many/how much).
Spanish (SFC)
Our topic is 'Who Am I?' where pupils will reinforce how to introduce themselves, say their age, express their feelings, describe what they look like, and use numbers up to 20 in Spanish.
Thematics
Through our thematic topic 'Celebrations from Around the World' we will explore the major religions followed in Kenya and discuss the significance of holy festivals for different religions. We will also explore the significance of patterns in some religions and cultures and develop our artistic skills to create patterns using different media.
Forest school
In Forest School we will refamiliarise ourselves with our Forest School rules for keeping safe in the woodland. We will also be learning about how life in the woodland changes from season to season and to care for wildlife by constructing bug hotels. We will also be focussing on our collaborative skills by creating shelters using knots we're learning.
Computing
We will identify the main parts of computer hardware, to use logical steps towards controlling an on-screen algorithm: Scratch Junior and Logo. To open, save and find documents. Computers in society: Programmed devices around the home – Robots. A refresher on using the internet safely and responsibly.
Music
The term begins with a skills check-in and recorder review to ensure that pupils are ready to continue their progress on recorder. We will introduce new notes involving the right hand and will extend rhythmic literacy by introducing ties and semi-breve (16th note) patterns. We finish the term by preparing for the Year 1 and Year 2 production, focusing on preparing student solos, lyric memorisation, and accompanying actions.
Games
Children will be introduced to the core skills and develop their understanding of cricket, football and athletics
P.E.
Swimming
Students will build confidence in their fundamental movement skills, developing greater control, coordination and spatial awareness. They will continue to practise sprinting, jumping for distance and height and throwing for distance, while developing their ability to participate safely and effectively in running and relay activities.
Children will revise the water safety rules, grow their confidence and independence in water through fun activities, and begin stroke preparation; Learning basic floating skills, streamline position, push off and glide and basics stroke kicking techniques. Being Me In My World - Children will learn to understand their own identity and place within their community, learn about their rights and responsibilities and the importance of respecting others.
P.S.H.E. Celebrating Differences - Pupils explore differences and similarities, discuss the negative impact of bullying and how to be an 'upstander'. They will also learn to appreciate the unique qualities of themselves and others.
