Year 1 Curriculum Summary for Parents Term 2 • 2025/26

Topics
English
In English, we will continue to follow the ‘Read, Write, Inc’ phonics programme to develop our knowledge of different sounds for reading and spelling. We will continue to read a range of stories that inspire our writing of stories and develop using capital letters and full stops to punctuate our sentences with improving accuracy. We will continue to develop our handwriting, focussing on accurate letter formation before progressing to the position of letters on the line.
Maths
In maths this term we will be extending our knowledge of place value up to 20 with daily counting to support this. We will use ‘part-part-whole' models to partition numbers up to 20 and find number fact families. We will also represent numbers using counters on 10 frames. This will support our learning of addition and subtraction to 20 before we move to solving problems on a number line. We will also learn the names of some simple 2D and 3D shapes this term.
Thematic approach
In our thematic learning this half of term our learning is around the theme of ‘Out of this World’. We will learn about the planets in our solar system and how famous astronauts have travelled to space. We will also explore modes of space travel and design and model space craft. After half term our theme is ‘Path to the Past’ where will learn more about how various aspects of life have changed from past to present. We will learn about significant people and events in the history of Kenya and around the world and develop our chronological understanding through creating simple timelines.
French
For children who have chosen to learn French, we will learn to name classroom objects and classroom instructions. We will also practise counting with numbers 1-20 and name different pets. We will also learn which countries are French-speaking.
Kiswahili
In Kiswahili we will learn to name objects around the home and use the expression ‘There is’. We will also learn some common verbs and nouns related to the house. We will also use ‘katika’ and ‘ni’ endings.
Spanish
For children who have chosen to learn Spanish, we will learn about the family and name family members. We will also reinforce how to introduce ourselves and say how we are feeling. We will also count to 10 and learn the names of colours.
Computing
In our computing lessons we will learn to log on and off the computer and how to control on-screen devices. Developing our keyboard and mouse skills are a key aspect of our learning this term. We will be introduced to programming vocabulary and program a physical robot.
Music
In our music lessons, we will learn to play the recorded and learn new recorder nots D & G. We will also learn about melodic shape and be introduced to the music stave.
PE
In P.E we will develop our gymnastics skills through basic movements such as jumping, rolling and balancing. We will also explore travelling in different ways, including moving on hands and feet. We will also be introduced to cross country running in a fun and supportive environment. We will develop our ball skills by practising moving with and without the ball.
Swimming
Year 1 swimming lessons will focus on children learning the rules of the swimming pool along with basic water safety and survival skills. They will develop their agility, balance and co-ordination in the water as well as learning to gliding as a basic propulsion skill.
PSHE
We follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme for PSHE and this half term we will be exploring ‘dreams and goals’. We will talk about our aspirations, how to achieve goals and reflect on what qualities have helped us to achieve success. After half term our topic is ‘Healthy Me’. We will be exploring ways of keeping safe and healthy in terms of both our physical and mental health.
