“Life is a process”
Every wrinkle is proof you’ve lived, not just existed. Blink, and it’s a story. Live boldly, for each chapter is etched into your being, making your story worth every wrinkle. This profound sentiment came from Miss Maggie Ritchie, a woman who cherishes every single moment of her vibrant life. When I asked her to define life in one word during our interview, she smiled warmly and touched my hand. “My dear friend, process. Life is a process. Do not regret what has happened; it’s a lesson. Learn from it,” she said. Her wisdom radiated as she continued, “If it wasn’t meant for you, it wouldn’t have happened.” This lesson, she emphasized, had been her guiding light.
Miss Maggie’s philosophy on life is as refreshing as a morning breeze. “Life is for living,so live it. Enjoy as much as you can. You don’t need a million dollars to find joy. A good novel, a cup of coffee by the window it’s all about perspective.” Her apartment, adorned with books ranging from birdwatching guides to atlases and novels, is a testament to her belief in learning as the essence of life. “Most young people don’t read anymore,” she lamented. “But when you stop learning, your mind begins to fade.” Even now, Miss Maggie remains a teacher at heart.”
“Life is for living,so live it”
Although she can’t travel much these days, her books and a large world map displayed in her home transport her to distant lands. “I’ve been to Europe and Africa,” she said, guiding me to the map. She pointed to Egypt. “I visited here. It was my first time in Africa. The history came alive. I’ve been to Egypt twice.”
“Choose yourself first. Time is fleeting. No one ever said life would be easy.”
Sitting amidst her lush plants, she shared her happiness. “Talking to my kids, feeding the birds, watering my plants, reading, and watching a Turkish TV series, Black Money Love, keep me busy and content.” Her laughter filled the air as she recounted spending $90 on a single plant. “They keep me going,” she said with a grin.
Miss Maggie’s advice is simple yet profound: “Choose yourself first. Time is fleeting. No one ever said life would be easy. Even the rich have struggles. Pick your battles wisely, and don’t regret falling. The key is to learn from it.” She added, “When help comes, accept it. Needing others doesn’t diminish you. We all need each other.”
When asked if she considers herself a feminist, Miss Maggie chuckled. “Growing up, the word had a different connotation. But I knew what I wanted and needed.” She described her late husband, an engineer from Caltech, as a kind, humble, and brilliant man. “He was my equal and supported my dreams, even when it wasn’t the norm for an engineer’s wife to work or study.” Their love story began in college. “We met at a party hosted by his school. Our first date was a movie. He borrowed a car to pick me up,” she recalled with a smile. “We dated for four years without sex. He respected my decision to prioritize my education.” Miss Maggie’s eyes sparkled as she recounted their life together. “I wanted to continue my education after having kids, so I told him I’d attend night classes twice a week. He supported me. Back then, it wasn’t common, but he believed in me.”
Reflecting on her younger self, Miss Maggy shared a humorous anecdote. She’d fallen in love with a house she passed daily and persuaded her husband to buy it. “It was beautiful on the outside, but I didn’t realize it had four floors and an elevator!” she laughed. “My husband loved tinkering with that elevator. It brought him so much joy.” One of the most memorable moments in that house was when a phone repairman got lost. “He called out, ‘Hello, I’m lost! I don’t know where to go!’” Miss Maggy recounted, laughing until tears welled in her eyes. “It was a maze. He eventually found his way, but we joked about needing a map just to navigate our own home. I never realized how overwhelming the size would be until I lived there.” Despite its grandeur, the house was filled with love, laughter, and her husband’s weekly elevator projects.
When asked what she misses most about her husband, her eyes softened. “The togetherness. Working on projects, gardening, feeding birds. My world was my kids and my husband. Girl’s nights out or trips weren’t my thing. I’d have missed him too much.”
Miss Maggie Ritchie’s story is one of resilience, love, and learning. Her insights will grace the first issue of Her Voyage magazine, reminding us to live boldly and cherish every chapter of our lives. Thank you, Miss Maggy, for sharing your beautiful journey with us.
Dear Daughter, It doesn’t matter how old you are you will always be the little girl in your mother’s eyes. And if there’s one thing you must remember in every season of life, it is this: you are worthy. No amount of money, praise, or love should ever cost you your peace, your soul, or your self-respect. Let me tell you what I’ve learned the hard way the kind of learning that only comes from breaking your own heart and rebuilding it with your own hands.
Men will treat you how you allow them to. You can’t make a man love you. You can’t “fix” one either. You can give your heart, your time, your laughter even your silence and it still won’t make him stay if he isn’t meant to. You might think you're fighting for love, but often you're just holding onto fear. When a man loves you, really loves you, you won’t have to chase, guess, beg, or shrink. And if you ever find yourself searching through his phone, reading between the lies, or living off emotional crumbs baby, you already know the truth. Your gut is not gossiping. It's gospel. Love deeply.
Trust completely. But never, ever silence your inner voice she’s your oldest, wisest friend.
Money will never define you, but knowing how to use it wisely will protect you. Don’t chase status. Prada won't make you powerful. Working overtime for labels won’t bring you peace. But saving a little? Investing in your growth? Creating something on the side that’s yours and yours alone? That, my love, is freedom. Let your money reflect your values.
And remember: you don’t need a rich man you need a rich life
Here’s the thing no one teaches us enough life is not just about survival. It’s about magic. Find friends who water your soul, not just your plans. Let go of people who make love feel like labor. Travel when you can. Smile at strangers. Say yes to something that scares you. You were not born to work until you die. You were born to live. The world will try to tame you, label you, exhaust you. But don’t let it. Run barefoot through your dreams. Paint your fears in color. And remember some of the best chapters in your life will begin with a brave decision to walk away from what you’ve outgrown.
Live fully let your face do the storytelling."
Make the mistake. Date the wrong guy (but don’t stay). Get your heart broken. Start over. Say “no” louder. Say “yes” softer. Be loud. Be soft. Be still. Be wild. Just don’t be afraid to live because life will pass anyway.
Be the kind of woman who walked the fire and came back glittering
Be the kind of woman who learns, unlearns, and loves herself enough to begin again as many times as she needs to. My dear daughters, remember: Humans are books. Find one with a good story read it, feel it, and grow from it. Say this out loud with me: Love deep. Love to nourish your soul. Love when you're truly loved. And when it comes to men let me say this loud and clear: There are no “exes,” only lessons. Never regret the love you gave. That love carved the road that led you here. It cleared the path for the woman you are now and the woman you’re becoming.

As told by Dr.Miriam Silas In conversation with Her Voyage She started with homemade body butters in her kitchen. Now she’s on a mission to glow up Tanzania one jar at a time. Meet the woman behind MS Butters & Glow, a skincare brand rooted in love, nature, and fearless ambition. In our debut issue, she opens up about her journey, her lessons, and what’s next for the glow she’s building.
✨
Glow Girl, Glow: How One Woman Turned SelfCare into a Skincare Empire
Honestly? It all started with a love for natural skincare. I was whipping up body butters and face masks in my kitchen not for business, just out of pure passion. I trusted the ingredients, I loved the process, and I adored how my skin responded. It felt like self-care, science, and magic all in one. Then my (now) husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, said something I’ll never forget: “What if this isn’t just for you?” That question changed everything. He saw potential in my passion before I even did. And that’s how MS Butters & Glow was born out of love, purpose, and a desire to share safe, natural skincare with others. It’s been anything but easy, but every challenge has been worth it. I built this brand from the ground up, and every jar still carries that love.
Girl document everything. I can’t stress it enough. In the early days, I was so caught up in creating that I forgot to track things sales, purchases, customer feedback. And let me tell you, growth without records? Nearly impossible. Now I understand that documentation isn’t just for taxes or spreadsheets it’s for clarity, strategy, and peace of mind. Knowing where you’ve been helps you plan where you’re going. Lesson learned!
Don’t listen to the noise. People will doubt your vision before they even understand it. And sometimes? That doubt comes from people you love. But you must believe in your dream, especially when no one else does. Also tech is your best friend. I built this business using free tools and YouTube tutorials. I taught myself everything from product formulation to branding and business registration. And now, with AI and digital platforms? The resources are endless. Use them. Build with them. Grow unapologetically.
My biggest dream? To see MS Butters & Glow on store shelves across Tanzania and eventually beyond. Right now, we’re raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to help with machinery, registration, and expansion. It’s a bold step, but I’m ready for it. We're also cooking up some gorgeous new products a ricebased face mask, a gentle everyday face wash, and a few surprises I can’t reveal just yet. Let’s just say: we’re glowing forward. Family. Always. My son is my heartbeat and my biggest motivation. Watching him grow, laugh, and just be it brings me joy I can’t describe. I also find deep peace in the little things: slow mornings, nourishing meals, and long walks that reconnect me with myself. These simple moments fuel me. They remind me that behind every strong woman is a soft, sacred space where she recharges.
In a world where hustle is glamorized, this founder reminds us that softness is strength, and passion is power. From kitchen blends to a national beauty brand, MS Butters & Glow is a reminder that sometimes, the glowup starts right at home.
Girlfriend, let’s talk. We’ve been taught to smile, to nod, to be “nice,” even when it hurts. But today in these pages I want you to reclaim one of the most powerful, liberating, life-shifting words in your vocabulary: No. It’s not just a word. It’s a boundary. A prayer. A declaration. A full sentence. And when you start using it with purpose, your life begins to change
You don’t have to say yes to every invitation. You don’t have to explain why you don’t want to go, why you’re not comfortable, why it doesn’t feel right. Just no. And that’s enough. Too many women take their first sip, say yes to the wrong guy, or chase the wrong dream not because they want to, but because they didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. They didn’t want to be “difficult.” They didn’t want to be “the only one who said no.” So they fell in line, smiled through it and sometimes, ended up lost in lives that weren’t theirs. Some of us studied degrees we didn’t love. Some stayed in relationships that broke us slowly. All because no one told us that “no” can come from a place of love. You can say no and still be kind. You can say no and still be a good daughter, a good friend, a good woman. You can say no and be free.
You’ve heard it before if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. And it’s true. Find your voice. Get to know your wants and your boundaries before the world tries to define them for you. Speaking up isn’t about shouting it’s about not shrinking. It’s about telling the truth of who you are, even when your voice shakes. Especially when your voice shakes. Because silence can be expensive. It can cost you time, joy, and pieces of yourself that no one ever had the right to own.
And when you do say no, when you speak your truth don’t apologize for standing out. You weren’t born to blend in. You weren’t meant to play small to make others comfortable. You are here to be radiant. Whole. Honest. Unapologetically you. Standing your ground doesn’t mean being cold. It means being clear. It means trusting that the people who truly love you will understand your “no” and still stay. So here’s to you, queen of your own story: Say no when you need to. Speak up when it matters. Stand out with all your beauty, wisdom, and wild grace. Because no isn’t a rejection. It’s a redirection toward your truth.
The Living Space Summer Reset: Your Space, Your Story As the sun lingers longer and the breeze gets warmer, it’s time to open your windows and your energy. Your home isn’t just where you sleep it’s where your spirit lives. And honey, she deserves beauty, breath, and a little luxury. This June–July, we’re not chasing trends. We’re curating peace. We’re styling intention. We’re letting go of what weighs the room (and us) down. Think: Breezy neutrals and pops of joy Spaces that spark conversation Corners that feel like a deep exhale From affordable statement pieces to DIY upgrades that scream “I did this for me,” our summer “home space” is all about living in a space that reflects your evolution. We’re talking scent, sound, texture not just what looks good, but what feels like home.
Raise your hand if your closet is basically a museum of who you used to be. That little black dress from 2010 (you swear it’ll fit again). Those jeans that carry more guilt than denim. The junk drawer full of pens that don’t work and batteries that… wait, why are there six of them?
We get it. Life is loud, and clutter sneaks in like uninvited guests at a dinner party loud, lingering, and emotionally draining. But here’s the truth: decluttering isn’t about having a Pinterest-perfect home. It’s about peace. It’s about making space for joy, clarity, and the woman you're becoming. So, pour your tea, kick off your slippers, and let’s reclaim your space and your energy together.
Before you toss a single thing, pause. Look around. Ask yourself: “Is this space supporting the life I want to live?” That dusty corner filled with “someday” items? That’s energy. That’s weight. Let’s free it
÷
Okay, we’re not Marie Kondo-ing, but she’s onto something. Hold the item. Say: “Does this still serve me?” “Is this me or just a memory of me?” Girl, you are not obligated to keep jeans from your ex-boyfriend era. You’re not her anymore. Let her (and them) go.
O F
Turn up your playlist Beyoncé, Sade, or Burna Boy, your call. Make decluttering a vibe. Break it down: Keep: It fits, you love it, it sparks joy or power. Donate: Someone else could love this now. Toss: Broken, stained, or carrying bad vibes? Bye. Bonus tip: Anything that makes you sigh instead of smile let it walk.
We all have that drawer. The one full of charger cords from flip phones. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Toss what you can’t identify. Categorize the rest. Boom you’ve just created energetic magic.
Find one space in your home to become your sanctuary. A chair, a window nook, your bed. Add flowers, a candle, maybe a soft throw. This is your recharge zone. No clutter allowed.
✨ Sacred vibes only.
Write down three thoughts you want to let go of. Now rip that paper. Burn it (safely). Release it.
Energy flows where attention goes and we want yours flowing forward.
“I release what no longer serves me.” “My home reflects the peace in my heart.”
“I’m making space for who I am becoming.”
Look at you. Letting go. Lightening up. Claiming space like the queen you are. Decluttering is an act of self-love, not punishment. You don’t have to be a minimalist just intentional. Remember, it’s not about throwing things away. It’s about saying: “I’m ready for what’s next.
“Find Beauty in the Forgotten” Let’s talk about that lonely old chair in your grandma’s garage or the wooden frame you walked past at the thrift store last week yes, those. With a little imagination and a splash of color, you can turn forgotten pieces into centerstage treasures. Revive Old Furniture: A coat of matte white paint, some gold hardware, or a fabric reupholster can breathe fresh air into a tired dresser or chair. Glass Jars & Cans: Don’t throw them out! Wrap them in jute, spray them in soft metallics, or paint half in pastel for DIY vases or storage jars.
Books as Decor: Stack 2–3 vintage or pretty-colored books, top with a candle or mini vase instant charm. Wall Art: Frame pages from an old calendar, poetry printouts, or even meaningful fabric scraps. Create a “memory wall” with purpose.
Pro tip: Make it a weekend ritual. Put on your favorite playlist, light a candle, and let your creativity run wild. You’re not just decorating you’re rewriting the energy of your space.
“A Palette That Breathes” Summer invites you to live light, and your home should echo that. Here’s your seasonal color guide to match the warmth outside with peace inside. Base Colors: Soft creams, oatmeal tones, dusty rose, and seafoam green perfect for large spaces like walls or curtains. Accent Pops: Lemon yellow, indigo blue, coral orange think throw pillows, ceramics, or wall art. Natural Neutrals: Add raw textures with rattan, wicker, linen, and unpolished wood. How to Pair: Oatmeal + Blush + Gold = feminine & calming White + Blue + Driftwood = coastal serenity Sage + Sand + Terracotta = grounded yet playful Moodboards aren’t just for designers. Take clippings from magazines, grab fabric swatches, or snap pics of flowers you love. Build a color story around what makes you feel held and happy.
“Fragrance Is the Emotion of the Room” We often forget this: your home’s scent is the first impression people remember. It also impacts your mood, energy, and how deeply you rest. Candles: Try soy or beeswax candles in summer scents like cucumber mint, coconut lime, jasmine, or eucalyptus. Essential Oil Diffusers: Mix lavender + grapefruit for calm focus, or rosemary + lemon for mental clarity. Simmer Pots: Boil water with orange peels, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and rosemary. Let the steam infuse your home with warmth and freshness.
Every woman deserves a sacred space not for anyone else, not for function but for her. It doesn’t need to be a whole room. Just a corner, a chair, a tray, a window ledge. Ideas for Your Corner: A soft chair with your favorite blanket and a little tray of tea, books, and your journal. A mini altar with candles, affirmations, crystals, or family photos. A plant corner near a sunny window your living reminder to breathe and grow. A beauty shelf: face oils, perfumes, and that lip gloss that makes you feel like Beyoncé. This is the spot where you don’t scroll you reflect, you recharge, you remember who you are. Repeat after Me: “I deserve space. Not because I’ve earned it but because I exist.”
Room-by-Room Scents: Living Room: Vanilla & sandalwood for cozy conversations Bathroom: Eucalyptus & mint for spa vibes Bedroom: Lavender & ylang-ylang for better sleep Kitchen: Citrus & basil to balance cooking aromas
Your home should smell like love. Like rest. Like a chapter you want to stay in.

First, take a deep breath. Now another. Yes, it’s your big day but remember: a perfect wedding doesn't require perfection. It just needs presence. The joy is in the moments that go right... and the ones that hilariously don’t. Here's how to plan with grace, confidence, and maybe even a little sparkle of sanity.
We know you've dreamed about this for ages. But here’s the truth: no matter how much you plan, something will go off-script. A missing flower, a song mix-up, a lipstick smudge... and guess what? That’s okay. Don’t let a hiccup ruin your joy. Laugh. Dance. Soak it all in. Your marriage matters more than your seating chart
We said it. Loud and clear. Yes, it's your day but you don't need to bulldoze your way to the altar. Listen to advice, even when you disagree. Accept help. Say thank you. You’ll feel better, and your relationships will survive beyond the bouquet toss. A kind bride is an unforgettable one.
Your wedding is your first official project as a team. So treat it like one. Involve your partner in the choices, big and small from music to menus. Shared decisions now lay the groundwork for your married life. Remember, “the family” it’s your marriage, but it’s their wedding too.
When you said yes, you said yes to more than just your future husband. You joined a tribe. Let them feel seen. Take their traditions, ideas, and weird cousin drama with grace. This isn’t about people-pleasing, it’s about honoring roots yours and theirs. Find balance, and choose your peace.
The dress, the cake, the playlist all beautiful things. But the memories you’ll keep forever? Those will come from the laughter, the small stolen glances, and the way your heart beats when you say “I do.” Let beauty be the backdrop, not the pressure. Plan a day that feels like you even if it’s imperfect.
✅ Do:
Breathe in, breathe out. It's a big day, not a Broadway performance. Eat something. You’re still human (and champagne on an empty stomach isn’t cute). Stay present. The little moments matter don’t miss your own wedding. Hand over the clipboard. You’ve done the work, now let others carry the stress. Smile at strangers. It’ll settle your nerves and fill the room with grace.
❌ Don't:
Micromanage. Trust your team, your planner, and the plan. Pick fights. Today is about love, not winning. Overthink every detail. No one knows the napkins were supposed to be blush pink. Scroll social media during downtime. Soak it all in this is once in a lifetime. Forget to say thank you. Gratitude is the final accessory of the day.
Let’s be real, sis weddings are magical, but the price tag? Not so cute. Whether you're planning a barefoot beach elopement or a glamorous ballroom affair, one thing is certain: you can have your dream day without drowning in debt. In this guide, we’re breaking down how to serve bridal looks, curate unforgettable moments, and walk into forever like a queen without selling your soul (or your savings). From the must-have splurges that make memories to the sneaky spots where you can save big, this is your blueprint to being a budget-conscious bride with bougie taste.
You can absolutely have a chic, unforgettable day without breaking the bank. The secret? Knowing exactly where to splurge and where to save. Because let’s be honest: not everything needs to be gold-dusted or Pinterest-perfect to feel luxe. Here’s your modern bride guide to celebrating love in style on your terms, and within your budget.
✨
Splurge: The Photographer When the food is gone, the music fades, and the dress is boxed up, your photos will be the lasting imprint of your wedding day. A talented photographer doesn’t just capture moments; they capture moods, magic, and those blink-and-you-miss-it memories. Think of this as your forever investment.
Why it’s worth it: A seasoned photographer knows how to make you feel comfortable, direct poses naturally, and catch emotional details you didn’t even notice. Plus, editing is an art and you want your memories polished, not filtered into oblivion.
Ì
Save: The Invitations Custom letterpress with vellum overlays and silk ribbons? Gorgeous, yes. Necessary? Not quite. Most guests won’t frame your invites they’ll snap a pic for directions and toss the rest. Opt for digital RSVP platforms, beautiful templates on Etsy, or DIY kits that don’t skimp on design. Budget Bride Tip: Use Canva to design elegant invites and print them locally. Or go full digital with stylish e-vites that still give glam energy.
F
Splurge: The Dress (But Shop Smart) If slipping into your dream gown is something you’ve fantasized about, then yes go for it. But don’t let the boutique markup drain your budget. Think consignment shops, sample sales, or even renting high-end designer pieces for a fraction of the cost. Why it’s worth it: You’ll wear it once, but the feeling of walking down the aisle in your perfect dress? That’s priceless. Budget Bride Tip: Check out online resale boutiques like Nearly Newlywed, Stillwhite, or even The RealReal for gorgeous, gently-loved gowns.
w
Save: Favors Sweet, but unnecessary. Most guests forget to take them anyway. If you must offer something, keep it personal and edible: a mini jar of local honey, a handwritten thank-you note, or a recipe card for your signature cocktail. Budget Bride Tip: Focus on experiences, not stuff. A photo booth or late-night snack bar will be remembered far longer than a monogrammed candle.
Ò
Splurge: The Venue Your venue sets the tone for the entire day. Whether you dream of rustic barns, rooftop cityscapes, or lush gardens, choose a space that matches your vibe and minimizes your need for extra decor. Why it’s worth it: A naturally stunning space saves you on florals, draping, and furniture rentals. Plus, having a reliable venue team is half the stress off your plate.
f
Save: The Cake Designer cakes can cost as much as your rent. Truth? Most guests are more into dancing than dessert. Order a small, beautiful cake for the photo op, then have a sheet cake in the back to serve. Budget Bride Tip: Some couples even opt for chic dessert bars with doughnuts, cupcakes, or mini pies.
§
Splurge: Music That Moves You The soundtrack to your big day matters more than you think. Whether it’s a DJ who knows how to read the room or a live jazz trio during cocktail hour, music sets the energy. Why it’s worth it: A great playlist or performer keeps the vibes high, the dance floor full, and the memories flowing.
Å
Save: Ceremony Programs and Extras Unless you’re doing something totally unconventional, skip the multipage printed programs. Same for guestbooks, sign-in boards, and anything else that ends up forgotten or dust-covered. Budget Bride Tip: Use a chic, oversized welcome sign or one simple program at the entrance.
Negotiate like a pro. Don’t accept the first quote. Vendors expect a little back and forth. Ask your talented friends. Got a friend who DJs, bakes, or does calligraphy? Tap into your community. Rent the glam. From tableware to lighting, rentals give luxe without the purchase price. Be realistic with your guest list. Fewer guests = more room to elevate the experience. Stick to your priorities. Pick your top 3 non-negotiables and spend there. The rest? Simplify.
A Wedding That Feels Like You Your day should reflect your love, your values, and your style not your stress levels. With the right balance of smart savings and intentional splurging, you can create an experience that feels deeply luxurious, effortlessly joyful, and completely you. Because let’s be real: elegance isn’t about excess. It’s about energy. And when your wedding glows with authenticity? Darling, that’s the real bougie vibe

TANUKE Y SMITH THE WOMAN WHO REDEFINED THE FIGHT When life handed Tanuke Y. Smith lemons, she didn’t just squeeze them into lemonade she whipped them into a lemon meringue pie, served it on her finest china, and told life to sit down and taste it. And when love soured? She licked the salt off her palm, swallowed her pride with a smirk, and dared the world to serve her something harder. This is not a story of survival. This is a story of reinvention. Of beauty rising from bruises. Of a woman who took the wreckage, stitched it together with laughter and resilience, and walked no, rolled into every room like a revolution.
"Twice Divorced, Once Arrested, Forever Unstoppable: The Rise and Roar of Tanuke
Tanuke and I met at Texas Southern University, both knee-deep in projects, prayers, and pressure. We shared a few classes, but one memory has burned itself into my bones like a favorite lyric. It was Dr. B’s class yes, that Dr. B. The class that gave everyone stress headaches and imposter syndrome. Tears welled in my eyes. I was ready to throw in the towel and drop out. But before I could even exhale, Tanuke leaned in, side-eyeing my breakdown like it owed her money. “Baby girl, stop. Nothing in this world is impossible. Look at me before you start shedding crocodile tears, you’re gonna be just fine.” She said it with the ease of someone who knew storms intimately and still believed in rainbows. That’s who Tanuke is. She doesn’t just endure she elevates.
So when it came time to choose our first-ever Her Voyage feature story, there was no debate. It had to be her. Her journey is stitched into every page of what this magazine stands for truth, tenacity, transformation.
LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE & MARRIAGE Two-time divorcée. Mother of four. Lover. Fighter. Survivor. Tanuke leans in with a smile, her eyes lit with a knowing glint not bitterness, but clarity. She's lived it. Felt every chapter in full color. And now, she’s willing to share the pages most of us would rather keep folded. “Girl, let me just go ahead and skip to the end of the first marriage.” She laughs, soft and sharp at once, the kind that says I’ve healed, but I haven’t forgotten.
I got married young - young and broke. He was a prison guard. At first, things were sweet, like they should be. I came from a low-income family, and he was doing better than where I came from. So yes, girl I upgraded.” She grins wide, owning her truth. “But everything shifted when he got promoted. Somewhere along the way, he started bringing the prison home. I guess he thought I was one of his inmates. Long story short I kicked his ass. And now I can’t vote because of it.” The room goes quiet. Then she takes a deep breath and walks me through the moment everything snapped.
THE FIGHT He was angry when he came home for lunch. Told me to get the f*** out of his house. I told him, calm and collected, ‘I will as soon as I finish cooking and feeding our children.’”* He came back about 30 minutes later. Grabbed me by the neck. Slammed me to the floor. Punched me in the side and stomach. I crawled I mean literally crawled to get to the table where my keys were. He hit me in the back, kept cursing me out. But when he went to the restroom?”*
I got out the door. Made it to my trunk. Grabbed the crowbar. Came back in and hit him with it right there while he was on the toilet.” He punched me a few more times. Blood was dripping. I hit him a few more times until he started bleeding, too.” The police were called. But the outcome wasn’t equal. I was charged with assault. Got a felony conviction. Lost my job. He kept his. Ain’t that something?” She shakes her head, but not in regret. Just in that way women do when they’ve lived through injustice and turned it into something stronger than revenge resolve. He thought he got the best of me. We later divorced.”
MARRIAGE #2: A BEAUTIFUL MESS Tanuke lets out a laugh the kind that holds both joy and ache. “Now this one? A beautiful mess. But boy, I learned from it. When it ended, I didn’t just walk away. I came out someone else. Stronger. Wiser. Softer in all the right places, harder in the ones that needed protection.” She pauses. “Five years after the first marriage crumbled, I got remarried. And I was happy. For real. He was a good man and we were okay. Not perfect, but okay. Life felt steady.” Until it didn’t.
“Then life pulled a plot twist. I got sick spinal meningitis. I was hospitalized for five months. March through August of 2005. I was just 34, still young, still feeling myself. But that illness stripped everything. My health, my energy, my sense of control.” Her eyes soften, remembering not just her body’s pain, but her husband’s heartbreak.“He was already grieving his mother, watching her fade from cancer. When I got sick, it triggered something in him. He couldn’t handle it. Couldn’t watch me break down, too. So he broke down instead.” “We lost everything. He moved out, took off to a country town in North Texas with his father. The kids got split up. And me? I had to move back in with my mama. A grown woman, sick, trying to heal, trying not to feel ashamed.”
But Tanuke doesn’t tell this part like a tragedy. She tells it like a triumph in slow motion. “In December that same year, I got up and got out. Moved into an apartment just me and God and the leftovers of my strength. I could barely sit up straight. Still healing. But I needed to feel like a woman again. Like me again.” “Public transportation became my angel. I used the service that picks up disabled folks door-to-door. I rode it to physical therapy. To job interviews. To anywhere that gave me hope. Bit by bit, I came back to myself. I could finally eat. Breathe. Live.” She exhales like she's still letting some of that season go. “We moved out of that apartment and started life over. Again. I really thought we were good.” Then came the shift. “He started coming home later. Locking his phone. Sleeping on the edge of the bed like I was contagious not from illness, but from truth. And the truth was, love doesn’t live in secrets.”
Tanuke leans back and flashes a grin that’s half-sarcasm, half-survival. “Meet inmate... hold the applause... no loud laughs please. I went to jail for writing a bad check.” She chuckles, shaking her head like she still can’t believe how wild life can be. “And while I was locked up trying to figure out if orange was really my color, he moved out of our home. Just packed up, ghosted. No warning, no letter, no crumbs to follow.” “The next year, I filed for divorce. Free from prison. Free from my marriage.”
She lifts her chin, not in pride but in peace that quiet power women find when the storm passes and they’re still standing. So I looked at her, my sister in spirit, and asked: “Tanuke... what came next?
WHAT NEXT? “I asked my inner voice that very question,” she says, resting her hand on her chest. “‘Girl… it’s not where you fall it’s how you get back up that defines you.’” Then she laughs. That signature Tanuke laugh. The kind that’s been tested in fire. “So here you go: meet a felon… with a Master’s degree. From a Black historical university. TSU, baby!” She lets the pride dance on her tongue before dropping another truth bomb. “After I got out, I moved to the South Side and went back to school. Sat in those classrooms with purpose in my heart and pain in my rearview. Earned my Bachelor’s in History and Journalism. I was hyped. Ready to rewrite the next chapter of my life.”
Encouraged by professors and peers, she applied for a job opening at the university. She knew she was qualified hell, overqualified. “Then boom rejection. They told me I wasn’t eligible because of my felony. That hit like a ton of bricks. I cried. Not because I couldn’t take a ‘no,’ but because I felt like I was being punished all over again after I already paid the price.”
“I WASN’T ELIGIBLE BECAUSE OF MY FELONY.”
https://txfpf.org Weeks later, the irony came knocking. “I’m watching the news, minding my business, and find out the same university that denied me just fired a professor with multiple felony convictions. Make that make sense.” Tanuke did what Tanuke always does, she got to work. “That Wednesday, I went to the library and started researching how to start a nonprofit. I didn’t cry this time. I got curious. And three weeks later, I had the blueprint.”
TEXAS FEDERATION OF THE PEOPLE FOUNDATION WAS BORN
“I built it by night, went to grad school by day, and hustled in between. I knocked on doors, partnered with other nonprofits, sat in rooms where no one expected me. And now?” She smiles, the pride unmistakable. “We’ve helped over 350 individuals find employment people who just needed a second chance. People like me. We’re thriving in underserved communities all over Harris County.”
MIC DROP Her Voyage would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you, Tanuke for opening up your life, your scars, and your strength. Thank you for walking us through a journey paved with grit, grace, and unapologetic truth. To our dear readers: we hope you carry her story in your bones not just as inspiration, but as a call to action. Tanuke is a trooper, a teacher, a torchbearer for what it means to rise, again and again. We encourage you to reach out, support, and amplify the mission of Texas Federation of the People Foundation because the work she’s doing deserves not just a spotlight, but a stage. As Tanuke always tells me: “One vote at a time, one chance at a time, one soul at a time we can change the world.” We believe you will. We believe in you. Thank you, my dearest friend.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A CONVERSATION WORTH CONTINUING
This article on women's well-being originally appeared in our sister magazine, People of Africa. It’s not just about sex; it’s about agency, awareness, and what it means to take ownership of your body, desires, and well-being. We invite you to read with an open mind and heart. Agree or disagree? TONGUES, BACTERIA, & BALANCE OH MY! Let’s be honest: when it comes to intimacy, we’ve all been there, and we know nothing speaks our language quite like a perfectly skilled tongue. But with the perks of pleasure can come that lingering, not-so-fresh odor. Yes, we’re talking about the “fishy smell” elephant in the room. Turns out, oral sex can change our natural balance down there. Saliva carries bacteria, which can disrupt vaginal pH, sometimes leading to bacterial vaginosis (BV) an entirely treatable condition that may just need a little attention if you notice itching or an increased discharge. But rest assured, it’s all part of understanding our body’s unique needs. And hey, a happy vagina really is a happy life! So, is it worth it? That’s for you to decide. But if the joys of intimacy are on the agenda, there are ways to enjoy safely and keep everything feeling fresh and fabulous.
PEOPLE OF AFRICA
The skinny on pH balance Think of your vagina as a carefully tuned ecosystem, a place you trust and know deeply. When new bacteria enter like the natural bacteria in saliva or from fingers it can disrupt this ecosystem, sometimes resulting in a different scent or even BV. BV isn’t dangerous but does require TLC, especially if that scent or other symptoms don’t resolve on their own.
Top Tips for your happy place From everyday habits to post-intimacy routines, there are simple steps to keep things feeling as fresh as you deserve:
1. Keep Scented Products Out of the Picture Fragrance-free is key. Scented tampons, douches, and soaps may seem tempting but can throw off your natural balance and irritate the delicate skin. Go for fragrance-free options designed specifically for sensitive areas.
PEOPLE OF AFRICA
« The Power of Probiotics¤ A daily probiotic can work wonders. Not only do probiotics support gut health, but they also help maintain your vaginal microbiome, keeping yeast and odor under control. Fermented foods like yogurt or kefir are also a natural source of probiotics that work with your body’s rhythm.
« Hygiene ThatÉs Gentle Yet Effective¤ Wipe from front to back, and make cotton undies your go-to to prevent bacteria buildup. After workouts or long days, a quick rinse of the vulva with water (no harsh soaps!) keeps things fresh without stripping away the good bacteria you need. « Mind Your Menstrual Products¤ For some¥ internal menstrual products like tampons or a menstrual cup reduce odors that might arise from pads. Whatever you choose, remember to change them often your comfort and health deserve it.
« Hydrate and Skip the Excess Sugar¤ Staying hydrated supports all of your body’s natural processes. Meanwhile, too much sugar can create the perfect setting for yeast, which might introduce new smells. Small swaps in diet can make a big difference.

Before/Aftercare for Intimacy: A Fresh Routine A few small tweaks can keep postplay scents at bay, so feel free to enjoy your time with peace of mind: A Fresh Mouth is the Best Mouth: You might kindly ask your partner to rinse or brush before oral. The bacteria from their mouth can influence your balance, so it doesn’t hurt to bring a little fresh health into the picture. - **Keep Hands Clean**: From phones to doorknobs, hands encounter all kinds of bacteria. A gentle reminder to wash up preplay keeps your ecosystem healthy and happy. - **Quick Post-Play Rinse**: A rinse with water after intimacy (no scented soaps!) or opting for unscented lube may help keep everything in balance.
PEOPLE OF AFRICA
The Essentials for Every Day If you’re after the perfect balance, here’s a little checklist to keep things fresh:
Diet Focus: Load up on fruits, vegetables, and foods with natural probiotics like yogurt. A diet rich in these can naturally support your balance.
Breathable Fabrics: Choose cotton and other breathable fabrics over synthetics that trap sweat and bacteria.
Hygiene Routine: Shower daily, ideally twice once in the morning and before bed. Keep the vulva clean but avoid overwashing, as this can disrupt natural oils.
Bathroom Habits: After intimacy, urinate to flush bacteria from the urinary tract, and consider a gentle wash with water. Not toilet paper please!

When It’s Time to Check with Your Doctor Sometimes, the scent is just a sign of your body’s normal
changes, but if it persists or is paired with discomfort, give your healthcare provider a call. They may suggest treatment, such as antibiotics, to quickly get things back to balance. At the end of the day, embrace this time to understand your body, practice self-care, and keep that confidence high.
A happy vagina is a happy life!

As the editor of this magazine and the author of Not So Italian Nor Your Nonna’s Cooking book, this kitchen section is especially close to mine. So here, I’m opening my book literally and sharing some of my favorite dishes with you. From the comforting stews that remind me of my childhood to the bold, flavor-rich experiments that have become new traditions, this section is more than just “what’s cooking.” It’s a love letter to the women who taught us to cook without measuring, to taste as we go, and to always make room at the table. This is just the beginning. In each issue, we’ll continue sharing recipes yours and mine. If you have something special bubbling in your pot or baking in your oven, we’d love to feature it here. Cook like pro Now you Know
1. Mastering the Knife: Hold that knife like you’re wielding Excalibur, but with less pressure to impress King Arthur. Your grip should be firm yet relaxed, like holding hands with a nervous octopus. And remember, it’s a knife, not a wand no need for dramatic flourishes!
2. Taming the Onion Tears: Want to avoid an impromptu onion-induced sob fest? Stick your onions in the fridge for a bit before chopping. They’ll be too busy shivering to make you cry. And if all else fails, just imagine you’re watching the saddest movie ever while you chop. Tears will flow, but at least you’ll have a good excuse!
3. Embracing Kitchen Gadgets: You know those fancy kitchen gadgets collecting dust in the back of your cupboard? Time to give them some love! Dust off that avocado slicer, unleash the power of the garlic press, and let that strawberry huller feel useful for once. They may not be essential, but they sure know how to make you feel like a kitchen superhero.
4. The Sacred Art of Tasting: Forget about those fancy tasting spoons ...your finger is the ultimate culinary tool. Just make sure to wash your hands first, unless you’re going for that extra kick of flavor. And remember, tasting is not a crime. It’s quality control, and you’re the boss!
5. The Dance of the Kitchen: Cooking is like a dance full of rhythm, grace, and the occasional clumsy stumble. Embrace your inner culinary dancer, swaying to the beat of sizzling pans and bubbling pots. And if you accidentally trip over the dog while twirling around the kitchen, just call it the latest move in your signature routine!
Remember, laughter is the best seasoning in the kitchen.
6. Clean as You Go: Want to avoid a post-cooking disaster zone? Channel your inner cleaning ninja and tidy up as you go. It’s like a high-stakes game of culinary Tetris fitting pots and pans back into the cupboard while dodging splatters and spills. Bonus points if you can do it without dropping your spoon! Remember, laughter is the best seasoning in the kitchen. So go ahead, sprinkle some humor into your cooking routine, and watch those kitchen mishaps turn into delicious memories!
Produce detective,
1. Trust Your Senses: Picture yourself as a produce detective, armed with a magnifying glass and a nose for freshness. Give those veggies a gentle squeeze firm but not Hulk-level strong. Remember, they’re delicate beings, not wrestling opponents. And when it comes to sniffing, go ahead, stick your nose in there! Just don’t get too carried away and start sniffing other shoppers’ carts. 2. Eyes on the Prize: Keep those peepers peeled for produce that’s as vibrant as a neon sign in Times Square. Think of it as a veggie beauty pageant only the brightest and most colorful contestants make it to the winner’s circle. And if you spot any sad, wilted specimens, give them a sympathetic pat on the back before moving on. They could use the encouragement.
3. Get Hands-On: Time to get touchyfeely with your produce! Give those leafy greens a gentle shake, like you’re testing for hidden treasure. Who knows, you might just uncover a bunch of kale that’s ready to party. And when it comes to herbs, treat them like the divas, they are pick the ones that stand tall and fragrant, like they just won a spa day in Vegas.
Spices are 1. Cool, Dark, and Handsome: Think of your spices like high-maintenance celebrities they crave cool, dark environments to stay fresh and fabulous. So tuck them away in a cupboard away from the spotlight, where they can chill out and avoid any paparazzi (aka sunlight) trying to steal their shine. 2. Avoid Heat Waves: Spices are like delicate flowers they wilt at the mere mention of heat. So keep them away from the stove, oven, or any other hot spots in your kitchen. Trust me, nobody wants to see a wilted basil leaf or a sad, shriveled cinnamon stick. 3. Say No to Moisture: Moisture is the enemy of spice freshness it’s like inviting a soggy mess to the party. Keep your spices far, far away from any steamy situations, like above the sink or next to the dishwasher. They’ll thank you by staying dry and flavorful. 4. Don’t Be a Scoop Hog: When it comes to dipping into your spice stash, sharing is caring. Avoid double-dipping with dirty spoons or fingers it’s like inviting bacteria to crash the spice party. Instead, use clean, dry utensils to scoop out what you need, and your spices will stay fresher than a daisy.
Flavor hugs! 5. Label Love: Spice jars are like a maze without a map without labels, you’ll be lost in a sea of mystery powders and mystery flavors. Take a few seconds to label your jars with the name and date of purchase. It’s like giving your spices a name tag at a party they’ll never get lost in the crowd. 6. Rotate, Rotate, Rotate: Spices are like the forgotten leftovers at the back of your fridge they have a tendency to get lost in the shuffle. Keep them front and center, and rotate them regularly to ensure you’re using the oldest ones first. It’s like giving your spices a chance to shine in the spotlight before they retire to the spice cabinet retirement home. Remember, storing spices is like a delicate dance you want to keep them cool, dry, and far away from any drama. Follow these tips, and your spices will stay fresher than a daisy, ready to add a burst of flavor to your culinary creations!
Just Cupcake Magic: 5 Sweet Tips from Khadija Abdallah
Cupcakes may be small, but when baked with love, they carry big joy. Just ask Khadija Abdallah, the heart and hands behind Just Cup Cake, a beloved bakery in the heart of Tanzania. Known for her melt-in-your-mouth texture and swoonworthy frosting, Khadija believes cupcakes are more than dessert they’re edible love letters. We sat down with her in her sunny Dar es Salaam kitchen, where the air smells like vanilla dreams, to get her top five cupcake tips. Whether you're baking for a party or just for the pleasure of it, these secrets will make your cupcakes sing
f 1. Start with Room-Temperature Ingredients
“Cold eggs and butter? That’s a no,” says Khadija with a laugh. “Roomtemperature ingredients mix better and give you that perfect, fluffy texture.” Set your eggs and butter out at least 30 minutes before you bake trust her, your batter will thank you.
f 2. Don’t Over-mix
Let the Batter Breathe “Cupcakes aren’t chapati,” she jokes. “Don’t overwork the batter!” Once the flour is in, mix just until combined. Overmixing makes your cupcakes dense instead of light and airy.
f 3. Fill Evenly Use an Ice Cream Scoop
For perfectly shaped cupcakes every time, Khadija swears by using an ice cream scoop. “It gives you the same amount of batter in each cup no more guessing!” she smiles. Plus, it keeps your tray looking professional.
f 4. Bake with Love, Not Rush “Check with a toothpick, but don’t open the oven too early,” Khadija says. Sudden temperature changes can cause cupcakes to sink. Be patient good cupcakes take their sweet time.
f 5. Frosting is the Crown Don’t Skip It Khadija calls frosting “the joy on top.” Whether it’s rich chocolate ganache or a swirl of vanilla buttercream, she believes the final flourish is what turns a cupcake into a celebration. “Even a simple swirl with love makes all the difference.”
From her kitchen to yours, Khadija’s biggest advice? “Bake with joy, share with kindness, and remember — one cupcake can change someone’s whole day.”
