50 Years of Black Cultural Leadership and National Artistic Impact
For five decades, Penumbra has stood as one of the nation’s premier legacy Black theatres, an institution rooted in the Black Arts Movement and sustained by artistic rigor, cultural stewardship, and community trust. As we mark our 50th anniversary season, we do so not only in celebration of our history, but in recognition of our enduring role in shaping American theatre and advancing Black cultural authorship.
Throughout this milestone year, we will stage and commission new works by visionary artists, convene recognized thought leaders, activate space in celebration of our community, and expand youth leadership pathways that invest in the next generation of storytellers and culture bearers.
This season affirms Penumbra’s place as both a guardian of legacy and a catalyst for the future of Black performance. Penumbra has been a place that has nurtured Black creativity and generations of activist artists. We create safe places for young people to learn about who they are and how they can uniquely contribute to creating a more just society. Penumbra’s new PRIDE program ensures that children as young as two years old are nurtured to see themselves as powerful, valued members of intentional communities.
A milestone season like this deserves a spectacular celebration. We will close the season with a gala that promises to be a must-attend event in the Twin Cities—a day of warmth, brilliance, and unapologetic celebration. Together, these events celebrate our past, propel us forward, and invite everyone to be part of a future as bold and authentic as the stories we champion.

The Theatre Season
Penumbra’s 50 th season will feature fresh takes on classic works and showcase new voices.
Mothership (world premiere): In a nottoo-distant future, humans are forced to flee a broken planet. Five souls board a ship traveling into the unknown, shedding everything of their former lives. Their journey is shepherded by a sentient ship that urges each passenger toward a necessary and sometimes painful transformation. An Afro-futuristic parable from healer and bestselling-author Resmaa Menakem (My Grandmother’s Hands) and award-winning playwright Kristen Calhoun (Black Cypress Bayou), Mothership asks how far we must go to retrieve our truest selves.
Black Nativity: Our beloved holiday musical is back as it’s never been staged before. Reimagined for its 34th year, Hughes’s Christmas story dazzles with musical traditions from across the African diaspora, electrifying choreography, and handcrafted scene design by long-time company member Seitu Jones. Bring your loved ones to celebrate what it means to care for the oppressed and hold onto hope, even on the darkest of nights.
Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly
Gorgeous: A grand dame of the theatre is returning to the U.S. for a career-defining comeback after decades abroad. Instead, she finds herself usurped by a young performer stepping into her most famous role. This collision with a rival challenges her legacy, her politics, and her sense of self… and soon pulls her into a future bright with possibility. From playwright Pearl Cleage (What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day), a jubilant meditation on ambition, friendship, and aging gracefully.
But Beautiful (world premiere): A horn player looks back on an archetypal jazz life: the flashes of genius, dark episodes, and friendships with greats like Lester Young and Thelonious Monk. Adapting Geoff Dyer’s landmark novel, playwright Harrison David Rivers (This Bitter Earth, Five Points) explores the 20th century’s defining genre through the minds of those who made it. His evocative memory play mirrors the rhythm of the music itself, creating an impressionistic tapestry of the jazz world, its mysteries and personalities.
The Commissioning Program
Our 50th Anniversary Commissioning Program represents a field-shaping investment in American cultural production. Building upon our historic role in developing and premiering the early works of August Wilson, this initiative extends the most comprehensive theatrical examination of African American life in theatre to date: Wilson’s Twentieth Century Cycle.
During this landmark season, Penumbra plans to commission 10 Black women and femmeidentifying playwrights to create new works engaging each decade of the 20th century. By centering voices historically underrepresented within the American canon, this initiative expands authorship, deepens cultural memory, and amplifies Black women and femmeidentifying voices as central interpreters of the American experience.
This ambitious undertaking reflects Penumbra’s national authority in Black theatre and reinforced our commitment to ensuring that the future of American drama is shaped by those whose stories have too often been marginalized.
The Conversation Series
As a trusted cultural convener for nearly 50 years, Penumbra brings together recognized leaders whose work shapes public understanding of race, culture, and democracy. Our 50th Anniversary Conversation Series positions Penumbra as a civic forum where complex truths are explored with rigor, integrity, and historical grounding. These conversations underscore Penumbra’s role not only as a theatre, but as a space where national discourse is elevated and community reflection deepened.
Racial Healing Exhibit
An immersive exhibit planned for 2026-2027 is an invitation to spark conversations and connections grounded in healing practices. Drawing on 50 years of award-winning arts and education practice, the exhibit will offer a historical and embodied understanding of racial healing as a personal and collective journey.
The Youth Program
Our PRIDE program launches in summer 2026 for teens and elementary school students. PRIDE is designed to foster positive racial identity development, cultural understanding, and belonging for young people at every stage of their learning journey.
We assembled a team of curriculum designers from across the nation who are experts in education, visual and performing arts, youth social justice work, and somatic practice. Together, they spent hundreds of hours building a robust, developmentally critical curriculum for students from pre-K through post-secondary education. PRIDE integrates arts-based learning, racial identity development, and workforce readiness skills to prepare young people for academic success, civic participation, and professional leadership.
PRIDE is about equipping young people with the knowledge, confidence, and community they need to be whole and healthy and to contribute meaningfully to the communities in which they belong. PRIDE represents our long-term investment in cultivating the next generation of creative leaders, reflecting our belief that sustaining Black artistry requires building durable pipelines for leadership behind the scenes.
The 50th Anniversary Gala
An Event to Remember
Penumbra’s 50th Anniversary Gala will serve as the culminating civic and cultural event of this landmark season. Bringing together artists, philanthropists, civic leaders, and longstanding supporters, the evening will honor the individuals and institutions that have sustained Penumbra’s legacy across five decades.
The program will feature distinguished performances, tributes to transformative leadership, and moments of artistic reflection that recognize Penumbra’s national influence. This is not only a celebration, but a public affirmation of the institution’s enduring impact and its bold vision for the next 50 years.
