GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, I want to begin by congratulating the Fleet Committee and the SHPYC team on a fantastic Pen Cup weekend! To Mr. and Mrs. Bray, Co-Chairs, and our whole Fleet Committee, what an awesome weekend! We have fabulous photos in this newsletter that we hope the members will enjoy. We have many events lined up for our members for the month of November. We look forward to when we can celebrate being back in the dining room. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my SHPYC team for their flexibility, creativity and continued motivation to serve our members with enthusiasm during this time. Thank you to Safe Harbor Marinas for doing things the right way. They stepped in and made sure, not only to fix the water damage remediation and drainage, but also made the commitment to create a better SHPYC! Renovations include new carpeting, updated pool bathrooms, new landscaping, and kitchen and office renovations. All this was done while staying committed to the previously planned renovations to the pool bar, grill and bathrooms. Here are some of our events we look forward to seeing our members enjoy: Holiday Sip and Shop, Royal Bliss Tap Takover, Friday Night Social, Member Wine Night, Wine Society Tasting, and Family PJ’s and Pancakes. To our Wine Society members, we will still be planning the last dinner for your enjoyment. Stay tuned as we will be emailing a notice of the date. Monica says hello to everyone as she still keeps in touch and is enjoying living near her family in Ohio. As always, it is our pleasure to serve you. CHEF'S CORNER

Lentil Soup

Ingredients •1 lb green lentils, rinsed and (optional) soaked for 1 hour and drained •3–6 cups water (or chicken broth) and 1/2 cup water •1/2 lb mild chorizo sausage (Spanish chorizo if possible, Mexican if not) •1 (14.5 oz) can fire roasted tomatoes, diced and drained •1 large carrot, diced •2 medium yellow potatoes, diced •1 large onion, diced •3 cloves garlic, sliced •3 bay leaves •1.5 tsp salt •2 tsp smoked paprika (not your regular paprika) •olive oil ________________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prepare the chorizo by either cooking it through as a whole link and slicing into medallions or by removing it from its casing and browning. 2. In a large pot, combine lentils, chorizo, tomatoes, carrot, potatoes, bay leaves, and salt. Add enough water to cover the lentils and bring to a gentle boil on the stove before reducing to medium heat. 3. Simmer lentils for 45 min. to 1 hr. 15 min. adding more water as needed to keep them covered. 4. While the lentils cook, add two tablespoons of olive oil to a saute pan and add the sliced garlic until it picks up some nice color. Remove the garlic from the pan, leaving the oil, and set aside. 5. Add the diced onions to the pan and cook on medium low heat until they are translucent. Remove onions and set aside. 6. Measure out the remaining 1/2 cup of water and place it near the stove. Lift the pan off the heat, add a splash more oil, and add the smoked paprika. Put the pan back down on the heat for about 15 seconds and stir the paprika around to release the flavor. Immediately pour the water into the pan to prevent paprika from burning. 7. In a blender or food processor, add the garlic, onions, and water with smoked paprika. Blend into a paste. (Careful, mixture will be hot.) 8. Gently stir this paste into the simmering lentils in the pot on the stove and allow the lentils to finish their cooking time. Lentils will be done when potatoes and carrots are cooked through and the lentils are soft.

BOATING & MARINA NEWS PYC Marina Dock Safety This time of year, the lake water has already started to cool off considerably. If you fall in the water, it doesn’t take long for hypothermia to set in. While on the docks, remember to always wear a PFD and always try not to be alone. If you do happen to fall in the water a PFD can literally mean the difference between life or death. Each dock is equipped with a throw ring, safety box containing a collapsible ladder, throw bag and emergency contact list. Hypothermia Symptoms Causes • The most common causes are cold water and cold weather This exposure to cold can be caused by: • Not wearing clothes that are warm enough • Staying in the cold for too long • Falling into cold water by accident Risk factors that increase the chances of getting hypothermia include: • Age – the elderly and children are more likely to get hypothermic • Alcohol – causes vasodilatation and heat loss • Medications – antidepressants, antipsychotics affect the body’s ability to regulate temperatures • Overexertion - the tolerance for cold diminishes when one is tired

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

After much planning and anticipation, the SHPYC Annual Poker Run took place over the Labor Day weekend. We had such a great turnout, and the weather was spectacular! Five stops were located at various sites around the lake for our participants to visit and receive their cards to assemble their poker hands. A special thank you to our stop sponsors! Later that day, poker hands were played at the clubhouse where participants, guests, volunteers and sponsors all came together to continue the fun and watched in anticipation for the announcement of the winners. That evening, the fun continued with a delicious lobster bake and a special fundraising Silent Auction event where over $15,000 was raised for our charities which include the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine-Dickson Hospice House, and the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. A special thank you to everyone who donated items and those who bid as well – the charities were humbled with the funds received from the auction. Additionally, the Fleet Committee had a special opportunity this year to raffle off a Brietling Avenger watch. Thank you to Fink’s Jewelers for making this possible, and congratulations to Ron Turner, our winning club member! The Poker Run and Silent Auction are premier Fleet Committee events each year. We look forward to welcoming you back next year. If you would like more information about participation or sponsorship, please reach out to a Fleet Committee member.

A quick safety reminder: Recently one of our members found themselves Vince Waktins Past Commodore with mechanical issues while entering the marina harbor. Although those on board were not in imminent danger, this was a stressful situation for the crew, and something that required quick communication for appropriate assistance. Here are few reminders in terms of safety and communication while on the water: Jacob Bachman Treasurer •It is recommended that all boaters have a VHF radio on board. 16 is your hailing station and should be monitored while boating. The SHPYC monitors channel 11. •Consider having on-the-water towing coverage with a towboat service. Lake Norman options include TowBoatU.S. and Sea Tow. Pamela Black •If serious emergency situations arise, hailing Power Fleet Captain channel 16 on your VHF or calling 911 are both appropriate options. It’s important to know your specific location on the water in order to receive the most rapid response. We look forward to seeing you on the water.
