Boating Season Is Here!

As we start another exciting boating season, please be aware of your surroundings! Don’t be overwhelmed with guest, gear, food and drinks! Before you depart the dock, make sure you conduct periodic slip and vessel inspections. Having a check list is very important and can likely prevent safety issues or costly damage.

Here are a few things to be aware of:

Dock/Slip Inspection

1. Make sure all shore power cords are in good condition. Replace it if needed. (Make sure power is turned off before inspecting any electrical cord.)

2. Electrical tape should never be used for repairs. Ensure there are no burn marks, either shoreside or boat-side.

3. Make sure there are NO trip hazards around your boat.

4. Keep all items stored on your boat when not in use!

5. Report any water leaks to your marina team.

Vessel Inspection

1. Have a free vessel safety check done!

2. Look for any leaks in the bilge or cabin area.

3. Inspect all hoses and fittings.

4. Look for frayed dock line and replace if needed.

5. Check all nav/anchor lights.

6. Conduct all routine pre-season maintenance early to beat the rush.

As we enter boating season, we will have a Raft-Up held at the Outrigger, along with a number of other events the club and Fleet Committee are holding that you might want to put on your calendar

Cinco de Mayo Themed Raft Up: Saturday, May 9 , from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm. th Boating Safety Fair & Boat Show: Saturday, May 16 , from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. th There will be safety vendors, including the police, fire, Sea Tow, Tow Boat US, and the Calvin Newman Fund. Family Activities Include:

Fleet Commissioning at Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club: A Cherished Seasonal Tradition

Each spring, as the lake comes back to life, Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club marks the start of boating season with one of its most meaningful traditions, the Fleet Commissioning More than a date on the calendar, the event serves as a symbolic and social kickoff, bringing members together to celebrate the season ahead Fleet Commissioning represents a transition from the quiet winter months to the energy of spring and summer on the water. Boats are prepared, docks fill with activity, and the club once again becomes a gathering place for fellowship and connection. Rooted in tradition, the event reflects the spirit of the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club, welcoming, vibrant, and deeply connected to the boating lifestyle. It is a reminder that boating is about more than vessels alone, but the community, memories, and shared experiences that make the season truly special.

THESAILINGSCENE

Our Women in Sailing group has grown to 30 women, and our first Women in Sailing event on the water could not have been more perfect. It was one of those picture-perfect evenings on the lake that reminds you exactly why people fall in love with sailing. The weather was gorgeous, the sunset golden, and the whole night was filled with fun, lots of laughter, and learning.

We were incredibly lucky to have Commodore Tim Harbick as our race teacher for the evening What better classroom than literally out in the middle of a race! We learned the basics of racing from how to read the course flags on a mark boat (ask Cathy Wood how to spot a “W”) to why spinnaker boats have to race farther on a course Also, just because you cross the finish line first doesn’t mean you won because all boats have a performance rating that comes into play

A little racing 101 was just the beginning. Our sailing lessons are coming up soon, and we have plenty of availability for any women who are interested in joining us. Whether you are brand new to sailing, curious to learn, or ready to get more involved, we would love to have you come aboard.

We are also beginning preparations for our own fellowship series of races happening in the fall and leading up to our own Pen Cup race These events are a blast to be part of, and we are now officially signing up volunteers! We are welcoming helpers behind the scenes and on the water It takes great people and great energy to make it all happen, and we’d love for you to join us

Some of these events also support local charities by raising funds. The Social Scene offers a fun and easy way to get involved with both the club and the Fleet Committee.
