What to know about extension cords

It is pretty common to see extension cords in the marina. These cords are used for battery chargers, heaters, etc. It is very important to understand what works best and is safer in the marine environment. Extension cords come in a number gauges (AWG) and selecting the right one is important. When it comes to an extension cord, a 10AWG-12AWG is recommended for the marine environment and are typically weather resistant and for outdoor use. All extension cords need to be additionally protected by a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter).

Always consult a certified electrician when making a selection. See below some important information to help when selecting the right cord. https://mechforged.com/extension-cord-size-guide

You might have seen numbers like 16 AWG, 14 AWG, or 12 AWG written on cords. These numbers represent the American Wire Gauge (AWG) a system used to measure the thickness of electrical wires. Extension cords aren’t one-size-fits-all. Here’s a quick breakdown:

1. Light-Duty Cords (16 AWG or 18 AWG)

·Ideal for lamps, phone chargers, or small electronics.

·Usually two-prong (no ground wire).

·For indoor use only.

Example: Using a 16-gauge cord for your laptop charger or table fan is perfectly fine.

2. Medium-Duty Cords (14 AWG)

·Suitable for TVs, computers, and small power tools.

·Can handle up to 15 amps.

·Most come with three prongs for grounding.

·Can handle 20–30 amps safely.

·Always grounded and weather-resistant.

FLEETCOMMITTEENEWS

Before we even knew where we were going to live when we decided to move to the Lake Norman area, we knew one thing for sure—we wanted to be members at Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club. Between the beautiful property, our lifelong love of boating, and the incredible number of social events the club hosts each year, it was clear that this would be a big part of our new life on the lake.

We started by attending Second Wind Social, formerly known as Commodore’s Hours, and meeting people here and there. But it wasn’t until I decided to attend Social Scene meetings and get involved with club events and activities that we truly found our people—connections that quickly turned into friends who feel like family.

Now, going on four years of volunteering in different ways at Fleet events like the Pen Cup, the Poker Run, the Pirate Treasure Hunt, and the Fleet’s charity fundraiser, I’ve taken on the role of Fleet Social Committee Chair. I’m incredibly excited to help keep fleet experiences fresh and to help others build the same meaningful connections we’ve found.

This year, our Fleet fundraiser, Saddles and Spurs for a Cause, will take place on August 28 in support of three local charities: Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Via Health Partners Levine & Dickson Hospice House, and the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund. We had an absolute blast last year at Speakeasy for a Cause, as you can see from the photos below. Please save the date for a lively night filled with games, auctions, raffles, and even line dancing lessons! There will also be children’s programming and s’mores by the firepit that evening. th

If you’re interested in helping this year, we have plenty to do over the next six months to make this event a success—and we would love to see you at a Fleet Social Scene meeting!

I wholeheartedly invite you to join us on the first Thursday night of each month to discuss club events, brainstorm new ideas, and connect with fellow members. There’s always a seat at the table—and a big plate of cookies waiting.

Warm wishes, Jennifer Hess Fleet Social Committee Chair, 2026

THESAILINGSCENE

March: The Month We Start Moving Again

March at Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club is that magical in-between: the sun starts flirting with spring, the docks get busier, and suddenly the lake looks like an invitation instead of a dare.

So here’s our March message from the Sailing Fleet: watch this space. Each month we’ll be sharing updates and invitations— because we’re building something this season that’s bigger than races on a calendar. Think: Sailing Enthusiast events, Women in Sailing gatherings, and an April Member Mixer with a sailing theme (yes, it’s going to be fun). And that’s just the beginning.

This year, we’re not asking you to be “a racer” or “an expert.” We’re inviting you to be part of the sailing energy at Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club, whether that looks like learning the ropes, crewing for someone else, volunteering, or simply showing up and saying, “I’ve always wanted to try.”

And we’re also looking for a special group of heroes: Captains who would love to get their boats out more often with fresh, eager crews—for those lazy, wind-in-your-hair days… or for a “just-for-fun” race where the only pressure is deciding who brings the snacks.

If you’ve got a boat and a sense of adventure, we’d love your help growing our sailing community. If you don’t have a boat, we’ve got good news: you can still get on the water.

March is where momentum starts. Let’s make it a season. Get on our email list by emailing me “I’m in for sailing” colleenlloydroberts@gmail.com
