GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Summer is finally here and we are ready! Camps have underway and the pool is open every day now. Welcome to all of our new members. We are so happy to have you with us! We have the Fleet Committee’s Poker Run June 17-18 with a Silent Auction that never disappoints. Dueling Pianos is always full so make your reservations online as soon as you can. If you would like to be a part of the Poker Run, contact Mike Lang at homemsl@aol.com. Family fishing will be on Sunday, June 12th. It’s a catch and release that is fun for the whole family. There are more details in this newsletter. Back by popular demand is Sushi Night on the 9th, Salad and Baked Potato Bar will be on the 16th, Prime Rib on the 24th. Please call and make your reservations so that we can better serve you. We will be making short videos to keep you updated on the pool, bar and grill. Please be on the lookout for them very soon. Wine down cruises are back. What a lovely way to end the day with a wine down cruise on the Nopkehee. Please contact Tamara Martin at events@peninsulayacht.com for reservations. CHEF'S CORNER
Almejas a la Marinera (Spanish Style Clams)
Makes 6 Servings An authentic recipe for almejas a la marinera. These Spanish style clams are addictive, so make lots!
Ingredients
• 2 Pounds (About 900 Grams) of Small Clams (Make sure they are all closed and throw out any open ones) • ½ Cup (About 120 Ml) of Dry White Wine (Dry Spanish Sherry works well here) • 2 Cloves Of Garlic, Minced • 1 Heaping Tablespoon Of Bread Crumbs • 2 Teaspoons Of Sweet Spanish Paprika • 1 Fresh Spicy Pepper, Cut Into Thin Rings (Optional-- Level Of Spicy Is Up To You) • 1 Small Onion, Diced Small • Fresh Parsley, Chopped • ½ Lemon • Bay Leaf • Extra Virgin Olive Oil • Salt and Pepper
Instructions
1. Place the clams in a big bowl of salted water for a few hours (or even overnight) in the refrigerator. This will ideally remove any sand that was inside of the clam. 2. Add ½ cup of water and the bay leaf to a large heavy pot and put over a medium high heat. Add about 6-8 clams at a time, cooking just until they open-- remember, if one stays shut it's dead! This is a technique so that no clam overcooks and no dead clam ruins the flavor. 3. Save the water when finished and reserve the par-cooked clams in a bowl. 4. In another pot, add about four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and the cut up onion, garlic, pepper and parsley. Cook over medium high until the onions are translucent. 5. Add the breadcrumbs and paprika and sauté. 6. Add the white wine and allow it to reduce. 7. Add back the liquid from cooking the clams and cook for about 5 minutes. Taste for salt, add salt if necessary. 8. Add back the clams and cover for no more than 5 minutes on low. 9. Sprinkle with more fresh parsley, a squeeze of lemon and enjoy immediately!

If you didn’t know already there are a lot of exciting things happning in and around the pool this season. We have renovations happening outside the pool and lots of fun and games all season long on the inside of the pool! Let me first start by introducing our Head Lifeguard, Lauren Cockrill, to our team. Lauren is a graduating senior from Hough High School and just wrapped up another season of competitive rowing with a local organization. Lauren comes in with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. She will be leading our private swim lesson program as well as weekend pool activities for the kids. Private Swim Lessons Private swim lessons will begin on June 1st and will last through August 14th. One-on-one private lessons $50 per/30min session. FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS POKER RUN 2022- June 18
One of our premier events is coming soon – our June 18th Hands Across the Lake Poker Run. Always one of the SHPYC’s most popular events of the season, this 24th annual Poker Run combines cruising on the lake, high-energy card play, and social time with Club members. This year we are also introducing card games oriented to the kids, so plan to join with your entire family if you like. If you haven’t participated in a Poker Run in the past, here is what you can expect: • We start the day with a short captain’s briefing at 10:30. • Boats depart at their leisure to visit 5 stops around the lake. At each stop, you will pick up the playing cards that will eventually build your 5-card poker hand. Each card is in a sealed envelope and won’t be revealed until it is time to play your hands in the afternoon. • You can buy, and play, as many hands as you like. At each stop you will receive one of the five cards needed for each hand; if you are playing 5 hands, for example, you will end up with 25 cards. • Visit each stop on your schedule – it isn’t a race – so feel free to tube, swim, or just enjoy the scenery throughout the afternoon between the stops. It will take about 90 minutes to cover the whole route and receive your cards. • At 3:30 pm, we congregate back at the Club to begin playing the hands. Each participant randomly groups cards into 5-card hands, opens the envelopes to reveal the cards, and can purchase up to 2 additional cards to try to improve the hand. With multiple dealers working with competing players simultaneously, it’s an exciting session as the hands are revealed. All play is completed by 5:00 pm. You do not need to be an experienced poker player to participate – the dealers will guide you to your best possible hands. • We track all the promising hands (generally, a full house or better hand is needed to win), declare a winner, and make the payout. You can buy multiple hands for $18 each in advance - we will be present at Commodore’s Hours and other Club activities in the weeks leading up to the Poker Run - or for $20 each after June 10th. Money raised from the Poker Run helps to support other important Fleet Committee events for members, including Dueling Pianos, the Scavenger Hunt, Treasure Hunt, and our exceptional safety and education efforts. If you are interested in participating but do not want to use your boat, that is fine as well – we will have regular shuttle departures throughout the day that will cover the stops while you ride along. We surround the Poker Run with additional events that have proven to be highly popular – Dueling Pianos on Friday evening, June 17th, our annual charity silent auction which closes on Saturday, June 18th, at 6:00 pm, and a very special dinner and entertainment event Saturday evening that will include live music and dancing under the stars.
