Wow, I can't believe it is already June! It is so nice to see you all enjoying the club. We have noticed that families have grown, and your children and grandchildren have been added to the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club. We look forward to watching them grow!

This month, we have so many events for you to enjoy. Bring your family and friends to the events so they can enjoy your wonderful club.

I was thrilled when the President of Safe Harbor Marinas asked me to speak on Waterfront Hospitality at our annual conference in Florida last month. It always reminds me of how thankful I am for my team and our members.

Fueling Safety & Navigation

Summer is here, which means so is increased boat traffic. Lake Norman Boating on the weekends can get pretty busy, so here are a couple of helpful tips to keep you safe and more relaxed on the water.

Navigation

1.Always be aware of your surroundings.

2.Never operate your boat while impaired.

3.Be aware of shoal markers and any shallow spots.

4.If out at night, be sure your navigation/anchor lights are working. (It’s a good idea to keep extra fuses and bulbs on hand.)

5.Never run with docking lights and the spotlight on.

6.When at anchor, do not have running lights on.

Fueling

1. Remember NO SMOKING!

2. Monitor VHF channel 11 if you need assistance.

3. Have lines and fenders attached and ready before you get to the dock.

4. If possible, pick the side of the dock with the least amount of resistance. Don’t fight the wind if you don’t have to…let it help!

5. Once your vessel is securely tied to the dock, make sure to shut off all motors, batteries, etc.

6.Make sure to close all doors, windows, hatches, etc. while fueling (gasoline fumes are heavier than air and will make their way to the lowest point of your vessel)!

7.Do not overfill. Remember the 90% rule. Always leave 10% for expansion. There can be very costly fines for getting fuel in the water.

8. Pay attention to what you’re doing. Gas caps, diesel caps, water caps, and rod holders can all look very similar!

9. After fueling, always run blowers for at least 5 minutes. If blowers don’t work, lift the hatch for 10 minutes and vent naturally.

Marina Manager Reminder

Remember to get your refund. As we start another boating season, make sure to keep track of all fuel purchases. Remember that we pay a road tax, and since we do not operate our boat on the road, we can be eligible to get a “Motor Fuel Refund” on that fuel not used on the road. Keep your receipts, and at the end of the year, download GAS-1201 (Motor Fuel Claim for Refund Form). Visit www.ncdor.gov and type “Gas-1201” into the search box. oater of the Year is off to a great start. We have had 2 events so far, with many more to come. You can nts like the Raft-Ups, Celebrity Home & History Tour (x2), Poker Run, Vessel Safety Check, Mark Boat or Safety Boat, Fall Fellowship series, Pen Cup, and the Lighted Boat Parade.

One of our signature on-water events, the Poker Run, will be held on June 13th. This is the 28th running of the Poker Run. Wear your red, white, and blue to help commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Here are a few things to know:

The Poker Run takes place on the water Stop at 5 locations and collect a sealed envelope at each stop These 5 envelopes make up your poker hand(s)

You can play more than one hand. The more hands you play, the better your chances of winning.

Stops are open from 10:00am to 2:00pm. It is not a race, so take your time and enjoy the lake. Shuttle boats are available if needed. Starting at 1:30 PM, head to the Commodore’s Room to check in and play your hand(s). If your hand is not strong, you can buy extra cards to try to improve it.

No poker experience needed We will help you make your best hand Cash prizes go to the top 3 hands!

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Calvin Newman Fund (which promotes and supports youth boating safety education and awareness)

Hello Sailing friends! June is here, and the lake is whispering, “Less scrolling more sailing.”

First, a big cheer for PYC Fleet Committee’s Women in Sailing: we ’ re now 30 + members strong, and 8 of those women are going all in this month, either taking the Learn to Sail course or deep-diving into their ASA 101 certifications. If you ’ ve been curious about sailing, this is your sign to jump in. (No boat needed. Enthusiasm required.)

Sail Boat Owners, quick note: if your boat is currently decorated with bird confetti, we have new sailors eager to put their fresh skills to use. If you ’ re a Skipper/Captain who’d love crew for casual sails (or a fun, low-pressure race day), please email us and we’ll help match you up.

Behind the scenes, Pen Cup planning is underway with a fresh new logo and new merch you’ll actually want to wear Pen Cup is on October 2nd, with a kick-off crew party on October 1st Racing not your jam? How about: merch, registration, sponsors, goodie bags, and being out on the water as a floating spectator & cheerleader? Pen Cup is pretty casual and tons of fun, so if you ’ re a casual sailor, you might find that participating this year is a good excuse to stretch the sails and give some new sailors a chance at rounding some markers and crossing a finish line.

Sunset Sail on June 19th. If you want one of those “wind in your hair, stress off your shoulders” evenings, come with us. You can sail your own boat, or we have a couple of boats we are filling up with passengers and crew. Email us if interested: colleen@monkeysinhats.com

The Fleet Committee is a dedicated group of volunteer members who collaborate with club management to host a variety of events for our members. Some of these events also support local charities by raising funds. The Social Scene offers a fun and easy way to get involved with both the club and the Fleet Committee. It’s a great opportunity to share fresh ideas, meet new people, and volunteer for upcoming events!
