GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Happy 4th of July! What a wonderful summer it has been so far! Thank you to all of the members and their friends who took part in the Fleet Committee sponsored Poker Run! It was a huge success. There were over 100+ items in the Silent Auction. The Dueling Pianos on Friday and the Two of a Kind Buffet were sell out events. We wrapped up the weekend with a Father’s Day brunch buffet and Chef Andres' homemade steak rub gift that the team was excited to share! The campers are having a wonderful time at the SHPYC summer camp! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be with your children. We have pontoons to rent as well as our Catalina 22. Please contact the Ship Store for reservations. Paddle boards, kayaks and canoes can be used at no charge. They are here for our member's enjoyment. Our wine down cruises are one of the best ways to watch the sunset on Lake Norman! Please contact admin@peninsulayacht.com. We supply white wine, beer and a delicious cheese platter. There are many events to enjoy this month and they are all listed in this Watch. Please make reservations so that we can better serve you. Please remember that your bills are due to the SHPYC in the month that they are sent to you. Thank you. The building for our pool bar, grill and bathrooms is on track. We know that when it is finished it will be an amazing place for our members to enjoy. We will have TV’s out there as well. Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We also send out member texts, a Thursday eblast and our monthly newsletter, The Watch, to keep you informed of all that is happening at the SHPYC. CHEF'S CORNER

Salmorejo

Makes 6 Servings

Ingredients 8 Medium Tomatoes, the quality of the tomatoes is one of the most important factors in the taste 1 Medium Baguette 1 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil again, quality is important 1 Clove of Garlic, not too big A Splash of Sherry Vinegar Vinagre de Jerez (Harris Teeter), although red wine vinegar can be substituted, A Pinch of Salt 2 Hard Boiled Eggs Diced Serrano Ham or any other cured ham, such as Prosciutto Instructions 1. Scald the tomatoes: Put a large pot of salted water on the stove and bring to a boil. Cut a small cross in the bottom of each tomato. When the water is boiling add the tomatoes for 30-60 seconds. Remove immediately and place in a cold water bath (a bowl filled with ice and cold water). The skin will peel right off of the tomatoes. 2. First Blend: Cut out the cores of the tomatoes and add all the rest to your blender. Blend at high-speed for about 30 seconds until the tomatoes are broken down. 3. Add bread: Take all of the “guts” out of your baguette and add them to the blended tomatoes. The baguette should have given about 2-3 cups of guts and you can experiment with how much you add, as this is how you change the texture. I use about 2 cups of the bread guts. Let the bread soak in the tomato juice for about 5 minutes. 4. Second Blend: Add the splash of vinegar, salt, and garlic and blend until the soup is an even texture and the bread is completely broken down. 5. Add Oil: If your blender has it, open the small hole in the top. Slowly add the olive oil as you are blending at a moderate speed. If it doesn’t have the hole, stop and go adding little by little. 6. Add Egg and Adjust: Add 1 hardboiled egg and blend until incorporated. Taste and adjust levels of salt, vinegar, garlic, and bread. 7. Serve in small bowls with remaining diced hardboiled egg and sliced ham as condiments. Serve cold! Enjoy!

BOATING & MARINA NEWS Watercraft safety SHPYC has a number of fun watercrafts for your enjoyment, at no cost to you but we do require them to be signed out. Although fun, these watercrafts must be taken seriously. Throughout the summer the marina can be very busy with boat traffic, so if using the watercraft make sure you stay aware at all times. You may see the boats, but they may not see you! SHPYC Watercraft Rules 1. Approach blind spots with caution! 2. All watercrafts must be signed out form ship store. 3. PFD’s must be worn at all times. 4. Paddles and PFD’s must be returned to ship store and watercraft signed back in. 5. Sail boats may only be checked out by experienced individuals. 6. You must be at least 16 years old to check out any watercraft. 7. Be aware of other vessels at all times! 8. All watercraft must be checked back in one hour before closing. Important statistics www.americancanoe.org • 85% of canoe fatalities were not wearing a lifejacket. • 48% of kayak fatalities were not wearing a lifejacket. • Experienced paddlers are four times as likely to wear their lifejackets. • Lifejackets not only provide additional flotation in case of a capsize or unexpected swim, they also provide an essential layer of warmth in cold water. • Wear It! Lifejackets Matter. • Paddlers do need to be aware of a few “Rules of the Road” when sharing resources with other marine traffic. Most importantly, keep a proper lookout. Remember to be courteous to other boaters and law enforcement officers. They’re there to help you to be safe and have fun. Marina Manager Reminder Come in as fast as you want to crash! When approaching the dock, approach with caution and at a controlled speed. Never try to dock during thunderstorms. FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS Our 24th Annual Poker Run, held on June 18th, was a huge success. As usual, our Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club community rallied around the event, which combines fun time on the water with spirited card play at the clubhouse. The 2022 event also included a special kid’s game for the first time, which was very well received and is sure to be part of our plans for next year. In addition to enjoying a beautiful day on the lake, the event was a profitable weekend for our winners – Mr. Fulks, who took first place, Madison Newman, our second-place winner (special shoutout to Madison, who helped to organize the kid’s event), and Sheri Wolfe, who took third. We surround the Poker Run with terrific additional weekend activities: the Friday evening Dueling Pianos, Saturday evening dinner with live music and dancing, and the culmination of our annual Charity Silent Auction. As is usually the case with big events, the Poker Run is only possible through the support of the many volunteers who pitch in to make the weekend a success; thanks to everyone who made the weekend possible. The Poker Run is just one of the many events organized by the Fleet Committee for the benefit of our members – which include our Lake History Tours, Family Scavenger Hunt, and Raft Ups. We can always use the support of additional volunteers for these events, so please let us know if you have an interest in getting involved. Mike Lang Power Fleet commander

Commodore Message from Gary Treen

We held our annual Silent Auction on Poker Run weekend, June 18th, in support of three important organizations in our community. • Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Davidson, NC • Levine & Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, NC • Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund/Cornelius, NC This event occurred over a four-week period on Friday evenings at SHPYC. We held preview silent auctions leading up to the final silent auction on Poker Run weekend. Members were invited to bid on all the donated items over the four-week period. In total, there were 144 donations- such wonderful contributions and an amazing job well done by so many folks! This year, because of all of you, we have raised $18,700. To me this is one of the most important events we do. We work with the community, many volunteers, and Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club to give back to three important causes. All the members pull together to make this a huge success for the charities. This is an amazing accomplishment that the members and club need to be proud of. I would like to extend a special thanks to the many folks that worked so hard getting donations making this happen. Thank you to the Silent Auction chair folks: Pamela Black, Wes Bray, Gail Treen, and the many silent auction committee members that work so hard to get the donations. Also, special thanks to Beverly Brewer, Sharon and Wes Bray, and Gail Treen for their countless hours they devoted to the silent auction.
